- Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction.
Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the second child of itinerant actors David and Elizabeth “Eliza” Poe. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Poe was taken into the foster care of John Allan, a Virginia tobacco farmer, and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. As Edgar Allan Poe, he distinguished himself at the University of Virginia but fell into debt from gambling. His stepfather’s disapproval shattered their relationship, and Poe left home to seek his fortune.
Poe married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1836; she died of tuberculosis in 1847. Despite his prolific activities - journalism, poetry, lecturing, short stories, publishing, criticism, and experimentation with fictional genres, including the detective novel which he virtually invented with the publication of “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1841) – he received scant recognition for his efforts until the publication of “The Raven” (1845). The poem’s instant popularity gave him a new visibility in literary circles, but his personal situation remained desperate: poverty, illness, drink and the physical decline. In 1849, he was found sick, injured and semi-conscious in a Baltimore tavern. Taken to hospital, he lingered four days but never recovered. Poe died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40. The cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to disease, alcoholism, substance abuse, suicide, and other causes.
Poe was one of the most original writers in the history of American letters – a genius who, thanks to his dire reputation, was tragically misunderstood during his lifetime. When Baudelaire enthusiastically translated his work, Poe found a wider audience in Europe and became not only an enormous influence on modern French literature, but also on the acclaimed work of writers such as Dostoevsky, Conan Doyle, and Jules Verne. - Nationality

Classic Mystery Stories: Poe, Dickens, London, Collins and others (Dover Thrift Editions: Crime/Mystery/Thrillers) by Edgar Allan Poe
This survey of very early, turn-of-the-century mystery/crime fiction provides a unique opportunity to compare the origins of the genre with what it's evolved into today. One forgets, for instance, that before the 1950s, it was considered perfectly acceptable to withhold from the reader until the denouement the clues that the detective used to solve the crime - there was no requirement that authors "play fair" by giving their readers a chance to solve the crime before the detective does. And show more there's much more emphasis on the imposition of justice, often in the form of epitaphs tacked on to the end of stories that spell out the precise fates of the villains in the case. Not unlike today, however, the detectives are a colorful bunch: in addition to the expected crop of law enforcement officials, the collection features a farm wife (A Jury of Her Peers), an indolent physician (The Archduke's Tea), a painter (The Ordinary Hairpins), an investigator of advertising scams (The Million Dollar Dog), and a con artist psychic (The Denton Boudoir Mystery.
Moreover, each tale is introduced by a forward, supplied by mystery genre scholar Douglas G. Greene, that adds significantly to one's appreciation of each tale. Not only did the forwards help to clarify each writers' contribution to the emerging genre, but they also contained intriguing bits of biographical info. Who knew that Adams was a crusading journalist whose exposes led to the passage of the Pure Food & Drug Act? That Futrelle went down with the Titanic, taking with him a trunk full of additional stories that are now lost forever? That Ottolengui, in addition to writing popular crime stories, also authored the best-seller Methods of Filling Teeth?
Am adding a brief reflection on each story, for those who remain on the fence about whether to give this a go. No significant spoilers that I'm aware of.
The Murder in the Rue Morgue, Edgar Allen Poe. The ingenuity of the concept & the solution holds up over time, but what struck me most forcibly this reading were the glaring similarities between Poe's Dupin and ADC's later creation, Sherlock Holmes. Both detectives objectify rationality, rely on forensic evidence and observation to solve their cases, employ newspaper ads as a ruse to entrap their victims (a la The Blue Carbuncle), and rely on guileless companions to acknowledge their accomplishments. Never appreciated how much of a debt ACD owed to Poe!
Three Detective Anecdotes, Charles Dickens. Three anecdotes in which ordinary police work saves the day. So what's notable about this? At a time when coppers were generally considered a corrupt, brutal, and incompetent lot, Dickens offers us specimens that combine everyman likeability with cleverness, competence, and good humor.
The Biter Bit, Wilkie Collins. And then along comes Wilkie Collins, to raise the stakes! His chief inspector and sergeant not only easily outsmart the blundering detectival endeavors of a boastful wannabe gentleman sleuth, but they do so by means of a wonderfully wry exchange of letters that had me laughing out loud more than once.
A Singular Abduction, Rodrigues Ottolengui. Professional private detective Jack Barnes is called in to solve the kidnapping of a young girl. The key to the solution: an ingenious take on how to kidnap someone without them being able to identify you afterwards. The clue provided by the glitch in the typewritten text is way overused in mystery fiction these days - but back when this was written, 120 years ago, I suspect this would have hit readers are wonderfully clever.
The Leopard Man's Story, Jack London. This story, narrated by a circus performer, revolves around an ingeniously clever and witty solution to the problem of how to kill a lion tamer. Hint: it involves snuff. Though the tale is brief and almost parable-like in its simplicity, the quality of the writing sets it apart from most of the others.
The Phantom Motor, Jacques Futrelle. Instead of a locked room puzzle, Futrelle gives us a "locked road" puzzle, in which a car races down a road lined by two tall stone walls, only to disappear before emerging out the other side. And also the mystery of why a respectable bank teller would abscond with a packet of bonds every night, only to conscientiously return them every morning. I rather liked this one.
The Million-Dollar Dog, Samuel Hopkins Adams. A likeable young lad gets roped in to a case involving a wealthy dog, an unscrupulous judge, a beautiful heiress, and a purveyor of beetles. This one's sillier than most, and relies on coincidence more than it should, but it veers from the norm by adding a bit of character development - a budding romance between the heiress and the amateur sleuth - that's charming and a bit refreshing after so many tales focused on puzzles and procedure.
The Bag of Sand, Baroness Orczy. With due respect to the author of Scarlett Pimpernel, this one left me cold: the plot was too complicated (way too many red herrings), the denoument too simple, and the detective doesn't even put in an appearance until the final paragraphs, because Orczy's left the storytelling to an uninteresting minion who's been infiltrated into the household as a servant.
The Denton Boudoir Mystery, Gelett Burgess. You'd think a fake mentalist solving a crime would be more fun, but the first 3/4 of the tale has so little to do with the final 1/4th - in which a chauffeur, a heart condition, and a parrot suddenly appear out of nowhere - that one can't help feeling cheated. Poorly conceived and forgettable.
Naboth's Vineyard, Melville Davisson Post. A judge commits a crime and tries to use his powers to pervert justice, but the high-minded citizens of the town refuse to let him get away with it. Post doesn't really seem that interested in the crime: it's the story of how the town holds the judge to account that he's interested in, resulting in a tale that feels a little like tuning into Law & Order for only the last 10 minutes.
A Jury of Her Peers, Susan Glaspell. In which two farm wives, left waiting in the kitchen while their law enforcement husbands investigate the death of a harsh, cruel husband, quickly deduce what must have happened based on their observation of "trifles" ("lady's affairs" that the men mock as unimportant) and their superior understanding of the ways of the human heart. The prose is awkward but the concept thoughtful and sagacious.
The Ordinary Hairpins, E.C. Bentley. Competent but nothing special, involving an uninteresting detective solving a rather uninteresting crime based on the color of hairpins and a half-dose of sea-sick meds left behind in the wake of a famous opera star's suicide.
The Archduke's Tea, H.C. Bailey. Who tried to kill the Archduke by running him down by a car? I predict most readers will care as little as I did! This was the weakest tale of the lot, which may be why it was left to the end. The storytelling is unengaging, the ruse used to identify the killer is unoriginal, the detective unlikeable, and the denoument both melodramatic and preposterous. You have my permission to give this one a pass. :-) show less

I haven’t read any Poe since high school English class, and my previous reading was limited to only a few poems and his tale Berenice, and wow have I been missing out. Edgar Allan Poe definitely earns his title of Master of the Macabre.
This collection contains 21 tales and five poems, it was a thrill to read through them. Some highlights include The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, The Premature Burial, and The Cask of Amontillado. Each were spine chilling, with show more excellent building of tension for pages and pages until the reader can hardly take it anymore. Then all at once a release, sometimes cathartic, sometimes horrific.
Of surprise was the twin stories of The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and The Purloined Letter. The reintroduction of the character of C. Auguste Dupin had me more excited than I would’ve expected. I was unaware that Poe had written short mystery stories, and while only the first is remotely solvable for the reader, it serves both as a change of pace between his horror stories, and as proof that he was more than a one trick pony. While I don’t think they reach the heights of his other stories he does maintain his excellent prose.
By far my favourite stories were The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Tell-Tale Heart. I read these back to back at 1:00 am and they petrified me. It’s amazing the depth of sheer terror he can conjure with just a few pages, you feel your blood freeze and your heart in your ears but you cannot look away from the page. I love it.
I’m not much of a poetry person but to my uneducated ear The Raven is still one of the best ever written. Not much more to say than that.
I didn’t love every story as much, none of them were particularly flawed, but they can’t all be masterpieces can they? I am curious to see if my opinion changes upon a second read, I plan to re-read this collection in a year or two, so we’ll see then.
This particular “Harper Perennial Olive Edition” was well bound with high quality paper and a gorgeous cover illustration of a Raven (what else). The ridges on the spine wore excessively but I don’t mind that kind of thing. I’ll happily have it on my bookshelf for years to come. show less

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. Of Nantucket. Comprising the Details of a Mutiny and Atrocious Butchery on Board the American Brig Grampus, on Her Way to the South Seas, in the Month of June, 1827. With an Account of the Recapture of the Vessel by the Survivers; Their Shipwreck and Subsequent Horrible Sufferings from Famine; Their Deliverance by Means of the British Schooner Jane Guy; the Brief Cruise of This Latter Vessel in the Antarctic Ocean; Her Capture, and the Massacre of Her Crew Among the [...] by Edgar Allan Poe
You have to define "science fiction" pretty broadly to include The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym as some people do; if we're going to backdate 20th-century genres onto the 19th century, I'd rather go with "fantasy," and even then, the fantasy elements are pretty minimal-- if pivotal. But the book is gripping all the same. I haven't read much Poe (if any), but I really liked how this novel always had this slight bent of surrealism. For most of the novel, everything that happened was within show more the realm of possibility, but it always felt slightly off. Arthur, our narrator, spends several chapters trapped in the hold of a ship, and his inability to know what's going on and his struggled to just move around is artfully portrayed-- as is his harrowing struggle with what he finds locked in with him. Things only get weirder from there, and I was always hooked. There are some scenes that are absolutely gruesome where Poe uses sparse, uncharged language-- and this only heightens the effect. It's a gripping, enthralling book, especially once the characters get to the islands mentioned in the (very long) full title, and things get really weird. And the ending is a killer. You can see why Poe never wrote another novel, but I'm very glad he penned this one. show less
"An artist is usually a damned liar, but his art, if it be art, will tell you the truth of his day." D.H. Lawrence.
Burying people alive, ghosts, macabre deaths of usually delicate and young women, dark magic, effects of inebriation and hallucination, torture, whirlpools sucking people out of their time, fatal plagues, torture, abnormal psychological states, obsessional behaviors... William Blake in prose.
If D.H. Lawrence was any close to right about his predicament I wouldn't have liked to show more be in Mr.Poe's skin, such horrors!
That Poe lead a tormented and dysfunctional life is no secret. Haunted by the death of her mother when he was barely a toddler and later by the long illness and ultimate death of the love of his life(his cousin Virginia)whom she married when she was only thirteen, Poe struggled to keep afloat between the feelings of abandonment and loss and his growing ill-health and addictions which eventually killed him in mysterious circumstances at the age of 40.
Whether this gloomy life served him as inspiration or he released his pain into his work, the extremeness of his imaginative creations managed to capture attention, if not acceptance.
The sickness-the nausea-
The pitiless pain-
Have ceased, with the fever
That maddened my brain-
With the fever called "Living"
That burned in my brain.
Considered the father of the short story, Poe manages to control the soul of the reader, nothing intervenes or distracts once you are engulfed in one of his curious and terrifying tales, you feel pulled down by an inexplicable and exotic sort of nostalgia which catches at your breath and prevents you from stopping to read. But make no mistake, Poe plays with you, giving you hope in a futile attempt to search for the truth and offer a plausible explanation for the unaccountable, even though you know deep inside that the end will be doomed from the start.
His literary quality is irrefutable, he borrows from the European Gothic tradition and adds elements of detective stories, creating a new register which seeks for the horrendous truth, for the paincuts into your soul, although sometimes a rare kind of beauty oozes from the text, whether conscious or unconsciously I can't say:
Then silence, stillness, and night were the universe
But mainly, Poe appears as a ruthless, crude and pessimistic voice who wants to put order amid the chaos, who wants to explain the inexplicable to elevate the name of the artist; offering an alternative to the newly born optimism, complacency and materialism of his age, and asking for nothing in return. He didn't seek for approval and often had to endure rebuke, few of his contemporaries valued his work at the time and being considered an oddball he was banned from society (or he excluded himself willingly).
It is through the anguish and torment expressed in his poems and short stories that it is plausible to imagine his existence rather miserable and that he suffered from a precariously balanced state of mind. But then, once again, I ask myself the same question which always arises when I try to link the real life of a writer with his work, was it his eccentricity that made his works so special? Were they the product of a genius or a deranged mind ? Or both?
The truth is, I am heartily sick of this life, and of the nineteenth century in general. I am convinced that everything is going wrong. Besides, I am anxious to know who will be President in 2045. As soon, therefore, as I shave and swallow a cup of coffee, I shall step over to Ponnonner's and get embalmed for a couple of hundred years.
In any case, although his haunted mind offered no respite, Poe's lucid writing managed to push the scales of reality and redefine the artistic world of beauty and lyricism towards a new daring approach where the probability of terror and darkness prevailed and where the motto could be summed up as to deny what is, and explain what is not .
As it usual happens in real life, neither black nor white, just a blurred smudge of indistinct grey. show less
