While it's virtually impossible to capture a live action performance between the pages of a book, much less the magic of Cirque du Soleil, this book still does an admirable job of giving us a taste of what the magical story of Varekai is all about. If you haven't actually seen the show live or via DVD it's a bit difficult to get a real sense of the plotline or characters through the minimalist design of the book (there's just too much to explore), but if you have seen the show then the book show more acts as a nice companion and reminder of the entire story. All of the imagery is taken from the stage show (with some re-staged I presume), so some of the images aren't of the greatest technical quality, but this roughness actually serves to convey the movement and energy of the performance. The 'splash' featured in every photo is mainly at a swimming pool, though some shots feature something different, like someone pouring a drink.

No text accompanies any of the photos. I wish the names of the people in each shot was included, as I recognised three or four of the celebs at most. It wasn't till I reached the end that I found an index of who appeared on each page. I couldn't be bothered to go back and check, mainly because I was reading this on the Open Library.

How could I not like this book. Women are the best source for art.
