Jacques Godechot (1907–1989)

1319. The Taking of the Bastille July 14th, 1789, by Jacques Godechat (read16 Mar 1975) This is quite a good book. While I know the history of the French Revolution quite well, a book such as this tells lots of things which enables one to get a better idea of what it really was like back in 1789.

2021 The Counter-Revolution: Doctrine and Action 1789-1801, by Jacques Godechot translated from the French by Salvator Artansio (read 25 Sep 1986) This is a book on the opposition to the French Revolution. It first studies the theory, including a chapter on Edmund Burke and chapters on other theorists. Then the accounts of counter-revolutionary efforts from 1789 to 1804 are set out. Not a bad book, even though I wasn't excessively interested in the subject. The book was published in France show more in 1961. This translation was published in 1971. I suppose I've read most everything at the Sioux City Public Library on the French Revolution and I was surprised to see this book in the political theory section--320.944--which is why I suppose I hadn't noticed it before this. El subtítulo, que es el título original, refleja el contenido mucho mejor que el título que le han puesto en español. La obra se dedica, en su mayor parte, no a profundizar en las razones de fondo de la revolución, sino en indagar por qué la toma de la Bastilla tuvo lugar precisamente en ese momento y lugar. Desde una panorámica muy general, en la que queda claro que revueltas similares, e incluso más violentas, tuvieron lugar años antes y en muchos lugares de Europa (centro de show more Francia, Ginebra, Holanda, Londres), poco a poco el autor va enfocando su lente hasta llegar a la narración cada vez más detallada de los sucesos que tuvieron lugar en París el día de marras y los días anteriores. Por eso, el libro se lee estupendamente, casi como una novela. Aunque no aporta demasiado al sentido de la revolución en la historia universal, seguramente porque no lo pretende, sin embargo es una buena "película de los hechos", como dicen los periodistas de ahora, un buen reportaje sobre un acontecimiento trascendental. show less
