Lee Martin McDonald (PhD, University of Edinburgh), before his retirement, was professor of New Testament studies and president of Acadia Divinity College. He is the author or coauthor of several books, including The Biblical Canon, and coeditor of The World of the New Testament (with Joel Green).

A good overview of how the OT/NT canons developed in Christianity (and in Judaism for the OT as well). In addition, McDonald discusses the use of the OT/NT by the Church Fathers. He also discusses the use of, and citation of Scripture by the same. All in all, an enlightening read.
