This is a gorgeous book of Poussin's paintings of nature to accompany an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in Spring 2008. The essays are extremely good and written by the top people in the field. A variety of topics all shed interesting light on how and why a history painter turned increasingly to the depiction of the natural world.

Particularly exciting are the excellent detail photographs of many of the paintings. Unfortunately, the colors are not accurate to the paintings: after reading show more the catalog, the paintings themselves seem muddy brown and uninteresting in their tonality by comparison! So be warned: the amazing colors of the reproductions will spoil you and the real paintings may be a let down. show less
