- Henri Cartier-Bresson was eldest of five children born to a wealthy textile manufacturer. The family lived in Paris and spent part of the year in Normandy. His parents supported his interest in photography, though they assumed he would later join the family business. He attended École Fénelon, and the Lycée Condorcet, before entering art school. In 1928-1929, he attended the University of Cambridge, where he studied English, art and literature, and became bilingual. Eventually, he turned from painting to photography as a career and became the father of modern photojournalism. He was an early adopter of the 35 mm format, and the master of candid photography. He helped develop the street photography or life reportage style that influenced most subsequent professional photographers. His 1952 book Images à la sauvette, whose English title was The Decisive Moment, contains the quote that gave its name to this style of photography: "There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment." The book included 126 of his photos, and had a cover drawn by Henri Matisse. Cartier-Bresson's work took him all across the globe, and he became the first Western photographer to photograph freely in the post-war Soviet Union. He was a principal of the Magnum photo agency, worked for Vogue, and also produced portraiture and landscapes.
In the early 1970s, he retired from photography and returned to his earlier passion for drawing and painting. - Nationality

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Mind's Eye: Writings on Photography and Photographers by Henri Cartier-Bresson
I like this book a lot. There are some real nuggets of insight here. The good thing about the book, is that it is short and concise. There is no verbiage, if I may use the term.
There is, however, a small issue. In a short book like this, you would expect that the insights would be more liberally scattered through the book. A lot of space is devoted to his own impressions of friends etc. This in itself, is not a bad thing. The price for this, however, is a bit high
The insights, when you come show more across them, are invaluable show less

The format is excellent. I recommend this as a must-have for any photographer, not just photojournalists. There's so much to learn from his compositions. Going over each page is awe inspiring that after studying a few pages, it's not unlikely you'll pick up your camera and go out there.
Henri Cartier-Bresson is the French street photographer and photojournalist who popularized the concept of the decisive moment, but you will not find that information or almost any other information in the terse two-page. Instead, the book goes straight to a selection of his photographs. Place de l’Europe, Behind Gare Saint Lazare (1932), the photograph that best epitomizes the concept appears here, as do Seville (1933) and Coronation of King George VI, London (1937), and Gestapo Informer show more Recognized by a Woman She Had Denounced, Deportation Camp, Dessau, Germany (1945) among others. Readers wanting to know more about Cartier-Bresson will need to look elsewhere, but this book provides a quick overview of some of his most important works. show less
A prince among street photographers. Arguably the best. This slim volume shows many (47) of his most famous early photographs.
