About the Author
Stan Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in Manhattan, New York on December 28, 1922. During World War II, he wrote training manuals stateside in the Army Signal Corps while moonlighting as a comics writer. He joined Marvel Comics in the early 1940s and worked there for 60 years. He was a central show more player in the creation of Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, and the X-Men. He wrote several books including Excelsior! The Amazing Life of Stan Lee written with George Mair, Amazing Fantastic Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir written with Peter David, and A Trick of Light written with Kat Rosenfield. If you ever want a testament to how good Stan Lee could market Stan Lee, look no further than this collection of the first six issues of The Incredible Hulk. Because it's a hot mess, start to finish.
When you read the first six issues of the Fantastic Four, or Spider-Man, or the Avengers, while you do see Stan and Jack finding their way, and settling into a groove, but with the Hulk? Yeah, Stan had a single idea: a big angry guy. That's it.
And it's pretty obvious he had no clue what to do show more with him. Does he change into the Hulk at night? Sure, for a bit. Is he gray? Sure, for the first issue. Is he smart or dumb? Depends on what the story needs. Is he a rampaging monster out of control? Maybe, until he suddenly has to listen to Rick's every command for...reasons. There's no consistency here, other than Rick following him around, and Betty falling in love with a guy who's literally never there, and only shows up kind of exhausted and with the flimsiest excuses as to his absences.
And yet, if you flash forward a decade or so to Stan Lee's marketing masterwork, ORIGINS OF MARVEL COMICS, you get the impression that he and Jack had this thing nailed down right from the get-go, that it was just the next great thing from the House of Ideas after the FF.
It wasn't. And I totally get why it was canceled six issues in. Even Ditko's really gorgeous linework in that last issue couldn't save the weak storyline. show less

I've been reading Black Panther comics in original publication order, but read this out of sequence because it's a collection of material from 1966-70 that wasn't released until after I'd read other material from this era. I didn't discover it until I'd got up to the early 2000s; I jumped back to read it after finishing Christopher Priest's run. Confusingly, it's called Mighty Marvel Masterworks Presents The Black Panther, show more Volume 1 but the stories collected are totally different to those collected in Marvel Masterworks Presents The Black Panther, Volume 1. Not sure why Marvel would have two so similarly titled reprint series, but I'm sure it must make sense to someone. (Note that the marketing calls this volume Claws of the Panther, but that title doesn't actually appear on the cover, title page, or copyright page of my digital copy from Hoopla.)
The story collects the Black Panther's original two appearances in Fantastic Four #52-53 (which I had already read, so I did not reread), plus the half of #54 where he appears (which I had not), and then goes on to reprint early guest appearances alongside the FF, Captain America, and Daredevil, as well as a few of his appearances with the Avengers. The first few stories are all Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, then Roy Thomas takes over as writer with John Buscema on pencils.
#54 and 56 are largely curios. It is neat to see the Black Panther play baseball against the Fantastic Four, but you have to suffer through a lot of blather about the Inhumans even though it's only ten pages long; the Panther doesn't really appear in #56, which is about Klaw returning to bedevil the Fanstastic Four. This has some amazing Kirby art but the writing is not Stan's finest, with a pathetic Sue and some pretty random resolutions. The Captain America comics didn't do much for me either, they are very much Captain America stories with Black Panther as a supporting character who could pretty much be any other hero, though I guess it shows that Marvel were interested in keeping the character going.
Then Roy Thomas takes over, and he clearly is very interested in the character because we suddenly get him and his world fleshed out a lot more. The Avengers stories weren't great, but were noteworthy. We get the story where Black Panther joins the team, the first appearance of Man-Ape, and a two-parter that introduces singer Monica Lynne, Panther's future fiancée who would play a big role in Don McGregor's and Christopher Priest's work. The story where T'Challa joins the team is weird; it has him in a mask where his lower face is visible, and he's not called "the Black Panther," his codename is just "the Panther." Clearly this minor attempt at a revamp did not stick—to the extent that in that in one of the later stories we're told he deliberately hides that he is Black so that he can avoid judgments on his skin color! The story has him being framed for murdering the Avengers, but the eventual explanation for what happened makes little sense. It is pretty easy to read this story with Priest's retcon that T'Challa only joined the Avengers to spy on them in mind, too.
The two-parter was pretty interesting at first; Black Panther and Monica get mixed up in the attempt of white nationalists to stir up racial animus. Initially, it seems like it's about them taking down the kind of people who might say things like "pointing out racism is the real racism!" Pretty woke, Roy Thomas! But then we learn that the white nationalist demagogue and the Black anti-racism crusader are part of the same evil organization, working together to undermine America. Not so woke after all. But you can see why Monica stuck around; she instantly pops off the page.
The best story here is the Daredevil one. It's a bit nonsensical in parts, but it's a neat story about the police trying to find Daredevil (he's been poisoned) but mistaking Black Panther for him, and so T'Challa helps them find Daredevil. Barry Windsor-Smith does some of the best non-Kirby art in this book, good atmosphere. We don't learn much about Black Panther here but it is well told.
So overall, a decent collection to read if you want a sense of where the Black Panther came from. show less

If you ever want to understand what a skilled marketer Stan Lee was, this is the book that proves it.
Dull, repetitious stories all built very much on a formula (open the story, let two or three Avengers—one of them always is going to be Hawkeye—openly snipe at each other until it comes to blows, stop the fight, introduce the baddie of the month, have them mostly beat the Avengers, then they come back and clean his clock...and through most of it, Scarlet Witch will be primarily useless, show more much like Wasp was before her). Lee has a way with the snark, but honestly, the constant jabbing between Hawkeye and Cap gets old very quickly, and you can tell it's mostly adapted from his Human Torch/Thing scraps.
Lee has no idea how to deal with female characters whatsoever. Every one of them is typically laid low by their love of a man. Every one seems to have loosely defined powers that are steps below the men.
And the men? They brag. They yell. They bluster. They brag some more.
As I read through these early issues, I keep thinking, man, I can't wait for the next wave of writers to come on. Roy Thomas. Len Wein. Marv Wolfman. Doug Moench.
Did Lee have his bright spots? Of course he did. But I think it's safe to say that 90% of his output was dreck.
But still, he's hailed as a genius who kicked the modern age of superheroes into gear. And he did, but he also did it while standing on the shoulders of giants. But, if you listen to Stan, every story that sparked off his fingers was stone cold brilliant.
Not even close. But his marketing would convince you otherwise. Which just goes to show: Stan Lee's greatest creation was... Stan Lee. show less

Y'know, I know everyone's all about Stan Lee, the Guy Who Created The Marvel Universe! ...or so he told everyone, and yeah, he did...with a huge amount of mostly unrecognized help from Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, Larry Lieber, and a bunch of others.
Stan The Man was a genius level marketer. Absolute myth maker. But what he was not, was a very good plotter...or writer, for that matter. I feel like he had a selection of maybe ten plots (and I'm being very generous with that) that he show more just worked and reworked and worked again. Did he have flashes of brilliance? Sure he did.
But I have to say, I'd forgotten how often he liked to show training scenes, to get action without any plot in there to fill some pages. I'd forgotten how often he turned team members against team members (Captain America freaking out and attacking the rest of his teammates because one villain lied to him, or the Hulk working great with others, then...not.) I'd forgotten how often the Earth was visited by villains from a different planet/the future/a different dimension intent on conquering ours, until they meet the team and run away, never to return. But mostly, I'd forgotten how absolutely stereotyped his women were. The Wasp simply can't help jonesing after any male in the room, or speculating on how handsome they are under that mask. Even when the Invisible Girl shows up, she's off to go shopping, or hanging out with her female friends at some garden party or something.
These stories are interesting, because they show the genesis of the Marvel Age of Comics, but I'm so glad that, in a few years, Lee would step back and we'd see the soap operatic hand wringing and unders3xed women fade away and deeper, stronger stories emerge.
I mean, all the plots above will still show up, but there would be far better writers than Stan pushing the heroes to greater heights. show less
