Franz Blei (1871–1942)

A brief but interesting book of three mens' recollections of Oscar Wilde, primarily contrasting him during the height of his fame and then after he was released from prison. Not much depth in any account save Gide's. However, it was interesting to read the general negative tone towards Wilde. They were all respectful of his oral storytelling and speech, but none seemed to think too highly of his plays and other works as a whole. There could be many reasons for this that have nothing at all to do with Wilde's writing - printed in 1906, perhaps being too encouraging of Wilde would be frowned upon by society. Or perhaps not, but I think Wilde's writing is much finer than they give it credit for.… (more)
