DescriptionsEdit Descriptions

This series was intended to offer the public cheap editions of established, out-of-copyright works adorned with specially commissioned woodcut illustrations. Artist and author Robert Gibbings was appointed art editor of the series. He had owned the Golden Cockerel Press and was an important patron of wood engravers. The first ten volumes were published in 1938 but the series was not considered a commercial success and no further volumes were produced. The illustrations are a nice collection of woodcuts by nine contemporary engravers. It is a pity that the cover priority default on LT doesn't allow selection of the covers from the correct editions but four have made the cut and can be seen above. (English, Member-written)
