I just received a copy of The Gargoyle today after finally requesting a copy last week.
So if anyone still wants one, it looks as if Doubleday is still sending them out. I think they're expecting to make a lot of money on this one. (And from the reviews so far, they may be right about that.)

To add my own little gripe about Harper Collins. Last week I received an email from them reminding me to submit a review for a book called The Safety of Secrets. I never got a notification that I was getting the book so I was a bit baffled by this.
Then in today's mail I received a copy of the book. Now if only life had a pause button only then I might be able to read & review this in a day. Ah well, they will have to wait...and deal with it. I can only do so much. Right?

I got a notification that I would be receiving a book to review, Nightwalker. I never received the book. I got an email today reminding me to submit my review and I responded that I didn't get the book. I know they don't resend books that are "lost in the mail", but with all these complaints about the program, they really should do something!

3- Yeah! That's why I've hesitated to ask for many of their books. They want you to reviews by a certain date and then what if something happens like what happened to you. That's frustrating.

>3 Irisheyz77: The exact same thing happened to me! I received an email reminding me to submit a review for The Safety of Secrets. I never got a notification that I was getting the book, and I have yet to receive the book. I hate the implication that I may not be living up to my reviewing obligations, but HC hasn't given me the tools I need (e.g., notification and a book) to fulfill my obligations. I've decided not to participate in the program any more. I've got plenty of books in my TBR pile anyway.

I emailed the author of The Forbidden Daughter and asked for a reviewer copy. She said they were all out, having given away so many at the LA BEA, but she would send me a raw galley of it. It looks like a really great book, and the cover art is gorgeous which makes me a little sad that I won't be getting the whole thing. But I do so want to read it. :-D

I got my copy of The Heretic's Daughter this morning. Looks like a good book!

7> I also emailed her about The Forbidden Daughter but got no response. I guess she liked your blog better lol :)

Which one is the Forbidden Daughter? I might have gotten it at BEA. (ok fine I got more than I can remember, it's embarrassing!)
I also was supposed to receive Nightwalker and jenlaw and got that same email today. Should I email them telling them I never received it?

The Forbidden Daughter is the story of Isha Tilak, one young mother who refuses to obey her in-laws' dictate to abort her unborn second daughter. When Isha's husband becomes the victim of a mysterious murder plot, leaving her alone with one daughter and another on the way, her only option is to leave her in-laws and raise her girls on her own.
But unexpected danger threatens to rip apart her new life. Suddenly the stakes become impossibly high -- even for a woman as brave as Isha.

I think my mail lady is starting to wonder about me. I got four packages today. (Only two were ARC's) But, it seems like I get a lot of packages in general lately. I love packages!
14lovemybooks
Getting packages is very addictive. :)

I got two books from bookmooch, one from amazon (my order was split into 3 shipments for 5 books!) and a mini-bound manuscript of The Watercooler Effect yay!
In their letter they write they look foward to reading my review on my blog, website, amazon, or librarything (love the mention!) This is my first book via the Shelf Awareness ad!

Wow I just got an email following up on The White Mary by Kira Salak. They said: "Any feedback that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. And of course, if your copy has not yet arrived please let me know."
First time I've had somebody follow up on an ARC (with the exception of those who contacted me directly in the first place). Anybody else?

I got the same email. I admit I had been avoiding the book on account of the extremely negative review posted by one of the other ARC recipients.

I got it as well, and it was a little high pressure, I have to say. I can't tell if it makes me want to bump it up (because I feel guilty) or bump it back (to show the guilt trip can't work)
23bostonbibliophile
I got the same email. I know it puts pressure on to get emails like that, but remember that galleys are promotional tools and they send them out because they expect something in return. thanks Kegsoccer for shouting out my review. I got several positive comments about the book after I put my review up. The negative reviews I saw were so far off of my experience with the book, it was almost like they were reading a different book! Oh well, to each his/her own.
24DevourerOfBooks
It seemed like the email would have been more useful if they'd mentioned "if you haven't read this out, please consider it, as it will be released soon" or if they were reminding us to read them b/c we'd had them for a very long time.
25virginiahomeschooler
It doesn't seem like it's been that long, has it? I can't remember. But, I'm moving this week, and there's just no way it's going to get done before middle of next week, I'm sure. I feel somewhat torn, too, because on the one hand, yes, I'm grateful they sent me the book, but it's not like we're getting paid, and I don't want reading (my escape from everyday pressures) to start feeling like a job, you know?
26littlebookworm
I got the same email. Maybe they intend to use some of our reviews to promote the book and are trying to get ahold of them this way? I don't know - I already read it and actually loved it personally, so I was happy to reply with my review. I agree with the Boston Bibliophile, I feel like some of the people who wrote the negative reviews were reading a completely different book.

I sent an email to doubledaymarketing at randomhouse.com with 'The Gargoyle - Publisher's Lunch' in the heading with my name and address about 3 weeks ago, and mine showed up. I didn't even list my blog or anything. I don't know if they're still accepting requests, but it couldn't hurt to ask.

I don't know how many they have left... I've sucked four out of them and Mooched two away, and it's been available for about a month and a half... but it's worth a try! Good luck on it!

I got the email about the White Mary today as well. I was really happy to recieve it because I had wanted to let the publisher know about a geographic error I found it. Let me know if you found it too! I like the idea of having a direct name to send my review to.
I also thought it was a great book and a real page turner. I felt as if the people giving it negative reviews just really did not get what the point of the book was. Yes the main character had issues. That was the point of the story and I could not wait to turn each page.

I got that White Mary e-mail as well. I really need to get moving on the ARCs. I'm having a hard time keeping up with them as I received more than I expected to. I still need to finish my June ER book!
I'm glad to hear that others enjoyed The White Mary. I was really excited about it and then the negative reviews kind of put a damper on my initial excitement.
As soon as I finish my ER book, it's up next. Not really because of the e-mail, but because it was the first one I received.

I got the White Mary nudge as well. I will read it next (or along with the 2 others in play). I am just grateful to have a gameplan for tackling the TBR...

I also got the e-mail, but didn't get the book. I'm really good about reading & reviewing ARCs quickly, so I'm frustrated that I'm waiting for so many for so long... My books are taking so long so I've decided to test my FPO base post office by putting in a big order with LLBean to see if it's just books or everything that isn't arriving (lol).

I got The White Mary nudge this morning and emailed some feedback. I'm out of town on business for about 2 weeks, so I emailed him some info and I'll get the review posted soon.
I have had no luck at all with Harper Collins, although they email me very nicely every month to tell me that I didn't get selected for anything. Bah! I've gotten every SA book I've asked for, so I'm not feeling neglected.
I got The Good Thief, but I didn't bring it on this trip. If I'd known I would have such a long layover, I'd have brought more books in my carry-on. I figured three would be enough for a 4-hour layover and a 7 hour flight (which I planned to sleep through). Instead, I had a 12-hour layover and I had to find a bookstore at the airport and pick up something else.

I just got my printed bound manuscript copy of The Watercooler Effect. Very cool. Nice generic letter from Jessica Lee and a mailroom routing slip (printed on a recycled printer test page!).
I'm personally trying to limit the number of books I ask for because when I got my two ER books ON THE SAME DAY I felt terribly pressured to read them and review them. Nobody put this pressure on me, it was my own doing, but I was stressed.
I don't like pressure, especially around reading. I'm reading The Aviary Gate and it's like pulling teeth. I'm disappointed so far, but persevering. I've only got about 70 pages to go. It's sad to have to say I can't wait for it to be over without really caring what the result is!

@4 jenlaw77 - I received Nightwalker a few weeks back and got that email from HC asking for the review as well. I'm not finding it to be an enjoyable read. Can't quite put my finger on it yet as to why but there is just something about it...other than the fact that there is lots of repetition. (If I read one more time that she's 600 yrs old I'll scream...I swear its mentioned at least once a chapter). I was about 1/2 way through it before moving over the weekend. Not sure when I'll finish it as it got swept up in the packing frenzy and could be anywhere.
Like others I also got the email about White Mary. From things I've read above it sounds like a good read. (Now if only I knew which box it was in...)
One thing I liked about the email was that it was personalized. Unlike HC's emails which sound like they are a condescending parent and you're a naughty child for not doing your homework. The Whtie Mary one was more of a little nudge to put it back on the radar. Makes me more inclined to bump it up the queue more so than the HC ones...which make me want to petulant and take longer to read the book.

I received the White Mary email yesterday and emailed him back to let him know the review would be posted this week. He replied within minutes to my email. I am really enjoying it, I have about 50 pages to go. I just took the email as a friendly reminder from someone who is on top of their job.

I got a copy of the Heretic's Daughter in the mail yesterday, with no confirmation e-mail from Shelf Awareness, so there is hope!
And I also emailed the author of the Forbidden Daughter asking for a review copy. She said she'd mail me a galley a week or so ago, but I've yet to receive it :-)

42-Well, perhaps it's good that I didn't receive it.
Although--I'm starting to wonder if my mailman is hoarding my books. For a while there I was on a roll, getting a book every day or so. Nothing for about a week now. That's good in a sense...I have about 5 ARCs to read, and I received an email from Chelsea Cain's publisher stating that an ARC of her newest book is headed my way.

I agree, and actually doing a good job too, when you consider how many of us have now picked up White Mary out of guilt. And even though I'm reading 3 other books, the beginning of White Mary was compelling enough that it is now the one of the 4 I will seek out when I get time to read!

Now, after my declaration of detestation and deletion of HarperCollins First Look, I got an email from them saying I've been chosen to receive Dough. After getting two emails yesterday saying, "YES! you are a loser... again", now I'm getting one? Go figure...
Maybe both yesterday was for Ghost Radio... Guess I'll have to BOOKMARK them again and put them back in my favorites folder.
Dough was the one I told them it was my birthday and it'd be great to get my first book from them finally for a birthday present. I guess it does matter what you say in the box.

Holy Moly! I received The Heretic's Daughter, The Power Makers and The Watercooler Effect yesterday. I emailed all of them via ads on Shelf Awareness.
50dulcibelle
I got The Heretic's Daughter and The Watercooler Effect yesterday as well, but I'm still waiting for The Power Makers - and it's the first I requested from Shelf Awareness. I've started The Watercooler Effect and am already impressed by the readability of this book on what could be a very dry subject. Have to admit though, my fingers are itching to dig into The Heretic's Daughter. I'm being good though. While I do sometimes read multiple books, I don't usually do that while reading non-fiction.
51bostonbibliophile
#25- I sympathize. I don't want reading to feel like work either and I get overwhelmed with the whole ARC thing sometimes. My solution is just to be more selective about what I request from Shelf Awareness and which offers I accept. That's been helping me manage my own Mt. TBR and even get to things *I* want to read!
52virginiahomeschooler
Well, I guess I bashed HC too soon. I just got an email saying I was getting Gilding Lily. I do think I'm going to have to stop requesting for a while so I can get a handle on the ones I've received. I thought I was being selective, but when you request maybe 5 over the course of a month, and they all arrive within the same week, it makes it difficult. Ah, well. There are certainly worse problems to have than too many books.
53lovemybooks
I just got the email saying i'd been selected for Nightwalker a few weeks ago! It hasn't yet shown up.
I got The Good Thief from Book Browse, I need to read that one soon as well.
I am just very unrealistic about how much time I have to read, and my eyes are bigger than my.....reading time, I guess. ;)
I do have The Forbidden Daughter, so if I have a chance to read it before it comes out, I'll offer it to someone. (unless I love it with every fiber of my being)

My eyes are always bigger than my reading time, but getting all the ARCs has helped curb my book buying, at least a little. Also, I need deadlines on things, or I tend to procrastinate. I know that I can get a book done in a few days if I put my mind to it and having a stack of them around makes me concentrate.
55jennsbookshelves
Well, I can stop complaining. Received a call from home stating that three books had arrived, one from Random House and two from Harper Collins. I'm not sure if one is the First Look book I requested, or if they are other ARCs requested via Shelf Awareness.

I got my 1st review book from Harper Collins First Look, Gilding Lily by Tatiana Boncompagni. VERY exciting:)
57the_hag
I've received The White Mary (which I also received the "nudge" this mornign also). I also lucked out and received a galley copy of The Watercooler Effect and an ARC for The Heretic's Daughter (I got this yesterday afternoon in my mail box).
I only ask for books that I really, really want to read...so I've passed up about 10-15 oher oppoturnities because the books don't match my normal reading fare. I try to break out of my "norm" every now and again, but I try not to ask for a book that I wouldn't normally read just beause it's free.
ARC's and the like go right to the top...but I have a HUGE reading pile for my TBR (like most of you I am sure). It's exciting to be able to get books for free! I love it!!!
Also, in terms of notificaiton, I got nothing in advance for The White Mary or The Heretic's Daughter...but I did get an email about The Watercooler Effect (because they were out of ARC's and wanted to know if I'd accept a galley copy). So, I think NOT receiving notice is the norm, they just show up.

After three months of requesting from Harper Collins and not receiving any, I got two emails today saying that I am getting This Year's Model by Carol Alt AND Dough by Mort Zachter. I don't even remember requesting the second one but maybe it will be interesting.
Also finally snagged an LT ER book! I'm getting Woman of a Thousand Secrets by Barbara Wood! :)

I found the White Mary email to be quite pleasant, really. They send the books out to get feedback - the least I can do is read it and tell them what I think. Unfortunately I haven't got my copy yet (or even know I should be getting one). I emailed back and told him that, and the next morning he asked for my address again and said he would send me another copy. Very nice.
62lovemybooks
I don't request a book just b/c it's free but I love books! All kinds of books and I have often discovered that I love a book I would never have picked up on my own.
And I still buy tons of books. I have a condition. It's called book-a-holism.

I didn't think the email was unpleasant at all. It just made me feel bad on my part for not finishing it already. It is hard with the Shelf Awareness books because for the most part you get little to no confirmation you're getting a book, then you may get 3-4 books in one week that were requested weeks apart.
>62 lovemybooks:
Is there a 12-step program for that? Or maybe a patch?

Thanks to this thread, I received The Heretic's Daughter from Shelf Awareness yesterday :-)
I have a question, though (for anyone) ...
How do you know whether you have been selected to actually receive a book. I've requested ten books over the past couple weeks (since I found this thread) and I've heard zero responses. The Heretic's Daughter just showed up on my doorstep! I understand publishers/marketers are busy... I was just wondering.

I got the White Mary e-mail as well. I have about 100 pages left, but should be able to wrap it up by the weekend unless real life interferes.

#68 - Of the last four books I've gotten only one actually had an email response that I was getting it. The other three were just pleasant surprises. :)
71jennsbookshelves
I agree..with #68..only a small portion actually respond and state that I am getting a copy. I've done a number of "dry" requests, and occasionally I'll get a response stating that my request has been forwarded to the publicist, etc., othertimes I don't get a response at all and the book shows up a few days later.
72Kegsoccer
To those who emailed about "The Forbidden Daughter", did you go through her website? Also did everyone get a response who contacted her, or are some still waiting like me? I feel left out *sob* lol.
73mint910
68- I've requested about the same amount over about a month. I only received The Water Cooler Effect and did get an email because they had to send a manuscript instead. I think I heard of a person or two getting one of the other books I requested but besides that I don't think anyone has gotten anything I've requested.
I'm very thankful for this thread, keeps me updated as to what might pop up in the mailbox!

Oh my goodness I'm shocked! I just got an email saying I'll be getting Gilding Lily. But the strange thing is, I just asked for it yesterday, and then noticed that the request-by date was two days ago. I thought I'd blown my chance (not to mention the fact that I've never been able to get anything from HC before). Strange. Ah, well. I shall look forward to getting a free book in the mail!
75DevourerOfBooks
>70 elbakerone:, I know what you mean! With all of the books I have to review (not to mention all of them I've bought/mooched and not read because more keeping showing up) I was almost relieved not to get an ER book this time. Not that I want to continue not to get them...
76nktk
kegsoccer > I emailed her at shobhan@shobhanbantwal.com and told her I was a book review website and I would love to review her book for it. If you don't get a response from her I would be happy to pass on my copy(that is if I get it) to you. She said she would be sending me a raw copy that she was running off herself:)

I'm very excited! While I didn't get my Harper Collins First look book to review today, I did get a copy of Tana French's In the Woods and The Likeness today via Fedex! I sent in a "cold" request for them last week. This is wonderful!
80JGoto
Wow! I put in a cold request forIn the Woods, read it, and loved it! Did you request The Likeness from the same address?

Yes..I said I was interested in reviewing both books. I received a response from the author, who forwarded my request to her publisher, the "guy that made things happen."

I didn't read great reviews of The Richest Season, so I think I'll pass on that one. Especially since I found out I'm getting The Stories of Devil-Girl from ER!
I also got an email asking if I would review Surviving Ben's Suicide. Might prove interesting.

I have to say that I'm pretty excited that several of us are getting these solicitations. I think it has to be an indication that banding together makes a difference. Now, we just need to line up a YA publisher, someone with some graphic novels...

89- OOOh that would be amazing. YA and graphic novels are pretty much my favorite right now. I haven't gotten any emails though..

Is Nineteenth Street a Christian novel? While I said in a previous post that I read just about any genre, that is one that I avoid. Bostick seems to specialize in that genre, although you can't tell from the pr for some of their novels.

Did my first cold email to an author for a book (Little Dead Girl) and got a response today from her saying that she'd push my request for an ARC through. =)

I don't read Christian novels either, so I would be interested to hear if anyone does get this (I didn't ask for it). If anyone sends me a Christian novel disguised as something else they'll probably not be happy with the review.
I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt for now, not having had any experience with them.

Is Bostwick a publicity company? I got the email as well and got that impression. This particular book says its Vanguard Press on Amazon, which is part of Perseus Book Group. I usually do check for the publisher on these sorts of requests.
I know a lot of you are knocking Christian fiction, but there's such a range it's impossible to know. I read and review a ton of it and there are some books that barely even mention God. Just saying that the genre has evolved a lot in the last few years.

I received an email today from a Nancy Williams who is putting together a list of bloggers/reviewers. I've copy & pasted a description of what she's doing below. She asked if I knew of other bloggers who might be interested...so if you are let me know and I'll pass along your blog URL info. Or you can PM me your email and I will pass along that info as well.
"I am putting together a list of book bloggers from around the world who enjoy reviewing as much as I do and I was wondering whether you would consent to me approaching you occasionally to read and review books? The service is going to include arranging reviews from a number of bloggers over the course of a month as well as various other online activities such as podcasting, social media involvement and getting our authors chatting with their readers and fans. We are beta testing the service at the moment which will help us finalise the website and complete package and iron out any issues that either our reviewers or authors might have."

Anyone get an email regarding "Queen of the Road: The true tale of 47 states, 22,000 miles, 200 shoes, 2 cats, 1 poodle, a husband, and a bus with a will of its own" by Doreen Orion? Lol I'm unsure whether it's a request to review, or just notifying me that the book exists.

I sent my request from my blog email address, but did not include my url. She checked out the blog anyway! I think for some reason that's quite cool. Anyone else hear from her?

There's so much info here (and on the other two posts) but in case this hasn't been posted before I've found this site to be helpful on occasion:

I have a cooking blog (http://erincooks.com) and I've always had excellent luck obtaining cookbooks simply by emailing the publisher's publicity departments directly. There's nothing too terribly mysterious about the Arc / Review copy process, although it can be very intimidating to send that first query email. It's always exciting to get those gorgeous cookbooks in the mail though.
Thank you to whomever first posted about Shelf-Awareness! I'm really loving the info and of course the opportunity to obtain fiction arcs.

I finally got my first issues of Publishers Lunch this week (after requesting it ages ago), but I'm not finding it very interesting so far (compared with Shelf Awareness). Have others found it worth reading?
143anysia
I subscribed ages ago and couldn't get off PL (so it's been going in my trash automatically). I don't remember seeing any ARC ads or anything like that. It's aimed more at the publisher/agent side of the industry rather than the bookseller/reader side from what I can tell.

The most interesting thing about Publisher's Lunch is when they post the deals...so if you are interested in seeing what will be coming out in a few years, that part is interesting. (at least to me)

I get and enjoy the Pub Lunch emails, but because they have a much more individual take on much of what's going on in the publishing world (as opposed to Shelf Awareness, which seems more objective). But I doubt it would be of much interest to you if you subscribed in the hopes of scorning any ARCs.

I just got my copy today, after I requested it last week. I saw the ad in Shelf Awareness.
I have a TBR book to finish first, as I promised to loan it to a friend, but then I, Robot is next in line. When I'm done I'd love to look at your review and any others I find, but I think I want to read it first.
I haven't seen anything else about the book, either.
I have read a good deal of science fiction/fantasy in my life, including all the Asimov books about robots (though not recently), so it'll be interesting to look at an update of the idea.

Fiscal Pear and Shimmer in the Call of River Whale by Olivia Brooks-Scrivanich is a fanciful children's story about the adventures of organic characters.

Subject: Beat the Reaper ARC
on shelves: jan 2009
Amazon Description:
Meet Peter Brown, a young Manhattan emergency room doctor with an unusual past that is just about to catch up with him. His morning begins with the quick disarming of a would-be mugger, followed by a steamy elevator encounter with a sexy young pharmaceutical rep, topped off by a visit with a new patient--and from there Peter's day is going to get a whole lot worse and a whole lot weirder. Because that patient knows Peter from his other life, when he had a different name and a very different job. The only reason he's a doctor now is thanks to the Witness Protection Program--and even they can't protect him from the long reach of the New Jersey mob. Now he's got to do whatever it takes to keep his patient alive so he can buy some time...and beat the reaper.

190-- Omigosh, I had completely forgotten about those. I kinda hope the one I requested doesn't come for a month or so...the teetering TBR pile is getting scary....
195silverheron
Just some thoughts that may be of use to help keep the TBR pile in control.
First off I have a list of what I requested and what day I requested it so I have some idea what may come in.
Then when the book comes in I mark on my list the day it arrived.
Next, when I get a new book I look at the projected date that it is to be released and organize my books that way. Right now I have a couple that are already out so my focus is on them.
How is everyone doing on the Power Makers. Since it is already out I have been working on it but it takes some focus. I keep stopping and rewarding myself with some fiction every so often. It is, however, very interesting and I look forward to finding my way all the way through its 400+ pages.

Power Makers is sitting near the bottom of the ARC pile. I hope to get to it soonly... by the end of July, anyway. I just started The White Mary which is good, but not awesome. :-D
I totally forgot about the Armchair Travel books. I'm limiting myself to what I request now, but I don't know if I should. I loved The Gargoyle, and might not have requested it if I had picked what only popped out to me. An ER book I got that I loved, Best Girlfriends Getaways Worldwide, is another one that I wouldn't have picked. That month I would have picked Firefly Rain which was an okay book, but I would have missed out because "I don't like travel guides".
I prefer to just let karma take over on the ARCs. They get here when they get here, and sometimes they are a complete surprise because I forgot I'd requested it. It's like a magical book club. ;-)

Silverheron,
I do the exact same thing. I have a basket that contains all my ARCs (about 10 right now). I break them up by months. Generally I review the book the month before it's due out. I divide them by the month I need to read them, then by date they are due out. It helps me keep track of what book I need to read next! It's not so overwhelming that way!

Silverheron and Jenlaw77,
That's exactly what I do too! I prioritize the ARCs by release date. Some ARCs arrive months before their release date, and I figure a review at that time doesn't help anybody. I don't want to frustrate my blog readers by reviewing a book they can't buy or check out at the library. Instead, I try to focus on those ARCs about to be released or already released. I'm working on The Power Makers and The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher now. If I didn't have some kind of system to handle the book traffic, I would be in a panic!

I thought that too, but some publishers are now using the name interchangeably so maybe it depends on the individual publisher.

I'm one of the individuals that emailed about receiving an ARC of Stealing Athena. Typically, what I do when I see a book I want to review is visit the author's web site. Typically, they have their email address posted, or there is an email address listed for their publisher. I email one or both of these addresses requesting the book. I include my blog address and indicate that I'm also a reviewer for bookbitch.com and would be interested in reviewing the book for my blog and bookbitch. I include my address, and so far I've received every book I've asked for, including Chelsea Cain's newest book!

I have a copy of The Gargoyle. I am about half way through but not sure I can finish it. I always believe that it is how close the book hits you, that can make or break it. I had to treat my husband daily when he was badly burned and I have been unable to get past this issue in the book. Too much like reliving it.
I also received a copy of One More Year yesterday and started reading it immediately. The stories are wonderfully written. As I was reading it, my husband was watching a show on LINK TV all about the problems of bringing electricity to the southern republics like Georgia. It was wonderful to see the towns that are mentioned in Sana's stories. It gave such a visualization to the problems that these people have faced on so many different levels. As they say, a picture is sometimes worth a thousand words.

I'm surprised with your experiences you were able to wade through the first few chapters. It was rough. But it really is a good book. And, though the burn theme still runs through the rest of the book somewhat - mostly in Marianne Engel's stories - it's nothing like the first bit of the narrator's ordeal.

Donura1 I'm sorry that your husband suffered so, and you are a good wife to have stayed and helped when many would book it. The Gargoyle's second half is less about his burns and more about dealing with living and loving, but I can definately understanding abandoning the book.

It does look a bit suspicious. I 'backed up' the web address (trying to get to the previous page) and went to the page http://www.randomhouse.com/crown just to see if there's a link from that page to the Read It Forward page, and there's not. That makes me think this is a 'hidden' website sent to a select audience. Interesting. I signed up. I'll see if anything shows up in the mail.

I've been requesting arc's from bookreporter.com for about 6 months and haven't gotten a single one yet! I was considering just giving up on it, but I suppose if the rest of you have had some success, I should just keep trying.

I'm starting a new thread, because otherwise I think I'll come back from my honeymoon and find you all in a 450-message thread that never loads.

253 -
A few people have gotten Heartbreak Diet (I haven't yet).
I got The Heretic's Daughter last week.
Not sure about Swimming with Strangers.
As far as I know, no one has gotten So Long At The Fair yet.

249 - Thanks for posting that - I went over to HC and signed in and saw that I am getting my first book The Blonde of the Joke by Bennett Madison about shoplifters at a mall. I never got an e-mail, so I am just hoping I will actually receive the book.

253- I got The Heartbreak Diet earlier this week, haven't gotten American Wife yet or Swimming with strangers. The rest I didn't request.
I just got an email about The Water Cooler Effect asking to let them know when we post our review or email them the link if we already have. It sounds kind of like the White Mary email some of you got a bit ago. I've been reading it all week. It's really interesting but it's not really something you can breeze through. It's a lot to take in!

Thanks to all for the info, I re-requested the ones I hadn't received yet - who knows that may seem a little pushy... I would hate to be "blacklisted", what a horrible thing that would be! I am still amazed to ask for and get free books, I can't believe it took me this long to find out about this - Thank you LT! Now to read and review them all....

253 - I got a copy of The Heretic's Daughter a couple of weeks ago. I made requests for So Long at the Fair and Swimming with Strangers, but haven't heard anything yet.

259 - Great blog - thanks for the link - loved your reviews, I didn't realize "The Heartbreak Diet" was a graphic novel/diary.
261 - I am excited to read "So long at the Fair" and "Swimming with Strangers" as probably a million other people are too.
262 - What do you say in your email requests? Not to ask a silly question, but I assume you provide your address? I do wonder how the publishers decide who to send ARC's to, maybe it's on 1st come basis?
Someone did start a - Other Places to Get ARCs, Volume 4 - I'm guessing we are suppose to end with this one and use the new one - I'm new to the threads.

Yeah, we're supposed to move on to volume 4, except it makes sense to me to answer queries related to volume 3 here... Anyway, to answer your question, I tell them I'm a member of LT and will post my reviews here (I don't have a blog yet, although I'm thinking I need one!) and I provide my address. Since I live in Canada, I find it always takes longer for books to come my way, but they do usually eventually arrive.
