Book 2: The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks

6JulieC0802
Edited: Jan 7, 2011, 10:55 pm

I'm not a love cynic but a realist, so Mr. Sparks view of love was a bit too saccarine for me. He is a gifted writer though.

Book 3: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

I've been meaning to read this for a while.

7JulieC0802
Jan 13, 2011, 9:20 am

Olive Kitteridge was brilliantly written and casts a light on the dark side of humanity.

Book 4: The Oracle of Stamboul by Michael David Lukas

8JulieC0802
Jan 21, 2011, 9:58 am

A bit of a disappointment in this debut novel. I felt like it was never resolved and we didn't know an outcome. I think the author assumed we knew what happened to the Ottoman Empire.

Beautiful cover and the descriptions of Stamboul were fantastic.

Book 8: American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

13JulieC0802
Feb 20, 2011, 3:37 pm

Once you get past the in-depth details and the comparison to Laura Bush, it's a great novel about one woman's struggle in her marriage and on her role as First Lady.

Lots of mixed reviews on Room. Can't wait to see what you think of it.
--BJ

19JulieC0802
Edited: Mar 14, 2011, 10:44 am

Room is a truly unique book in the subject matter and voice. While I did enjoy it, I didn't fall in love with Jack, the 5 year old narrator. In fact, at times I found him annoying.

29JulieC0802

The Hour I First Believed was an excellent, thought provoking book by Wally Lamb. I thought it was going to concentrate on the fictional fallout of Columbine but it was much more.

Great review of The Wild Rose! I am ordering it this week on amazon. My group reads have delayed my reading of The Tea Rose, but I am back at it and loving it. I see that you are also reading The Devil in the White City (or I thought that was you). I have that book hanging around here, so I look forward to that review. Have a great day!

60JulieC0802
Aug 29, 2011, 1:10 pm

BJ - I am reading The Devil in the White City but honestly it's moving slowly. I thought it would be a bit quicker. It's interesting but meticulous.

61JulieC0802

Book 48: Close Your Eyes by Amanda Eyre Ward

66billiejean

Book 50: The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

It took me over a month to read this and while fascinating at times, it failed to live up to the expectations put on it.

72billiejean
Sep 15, 2011, 8:37 pm

Maybe I will put it off a little longer. I was planning to read it last Halloween, but I never got to it. I kind of remember now hearing that it was dry at times. Was it true crime?

Oh, and congrats on reaching #50! :)

73JulieC0802
Sep 16, 2011, 9:19 am

Yes it was. So it's a historical non-fiction book that he heavily researched. It is interesting at times but then slow and cumbersome at others.

Thanks! It's the first time I've done it so early in the year. :)

I have enjoyed most of her other novels but The Other Queen fell flat for me. Having said that though, I am looking forward to her Cousin's War series.

The Tiger's Wife was on the short list for a National Book Award, I'm trying to figure out why. That's not saying there wasn't some great things about it but as a whole it didn't work for me.

Alice I Have Been is an thought provoking, provocative historical fiction novel. I will definitely be reading more Melanie Benjamin.
