I have this poem about grief from The Sky is Everywhere. Here it is:

Grief is a house
where the chairs
have forgotten how to hold us
the mirrors how to reflect us
the walls how to contain us
Grief is a house that disappears
each time someone knocks at the door
or rings a bell
a house that blows into the air
at the slightest gust
that buries itself deep in the ground
while everyone is sleeping
grief is a house where no one can protect you
where the younger sister
will grow older than the older one
where the doors
no longer let you in
or out.

Lucky Charms are like the vampires of breakfast cereal. They're magical, they're delicious, they're a little bit dangerous and bad for you. They initially make you feel great, but then over time you realize that maybe your relationship with Lucky Charms is just a little bit unhealthy and you start to think, 'Maybe I don't want to be in a long-term relationship with a breakfast cereal that tastes delicious but damages my health.' But then the Lucky Charms gets all stalker on you and for some reason you kind of like that. It makes you feel special. So yeah, you spend your life with Lucky Charms. That's awesome. That's a great way to... get diabetes.

Hey, message 53 has my favorite Harry Potter quote! It never fails to crack me up.

Here's one from the book I'm currently reading:

“Turns out he does run," Nick drawled. "Given an incentive. And he wouldn't be so out of breath if he hadn't kept shrieking."
"That was not a shriek," Jamie said with dignity. "It was a husky masculine cry of terror.”

Ha ha!! That is so awesome.
Is that book any good, I haven't gotten around to reading it.

57Tavaresden
Oct 11, 2011, 11:09 am

It's the sequel to Demon's Lexicon and is veeeerrry good. I'm a complete sucker for books with strong platonic relationships (and romance that isn't too gooey) and this would be one of them. The author likes to dump information on you in the beginning but she makes up for it with plenty of action and twists.

58mrmcfluff

Who's the author for the series??

61Tavaresden
Oct 11, 2011, 6:11 pm

Sarah Rees Brennan She's pretty cool. She wrote a short story spin-off of the trilogy which was had me cracking up so much, my roommate started looking at me funny!

62mrmcfluff
Oct 11, 2011, 6:37 pm

The third is called Demon's Surrender. I just started it :)

66mrmcfluff
Oct 11, 2011, 10:50 pm

Sounds like kind of a twilight trilogy.
Does it have vampires and werewolves in it??

67Tavaresden
Oct 11, 2011, 11:29 pm

Actually, it's nothing like twilight. No vampires or werewolves in sight. Plenty of magicians and demons instead. I would say that the trilogy is similar to Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy (another great series if you haven't read it!).

71Tavaresden
Oct 12, 2011, 10:55 pm

Hehe, you can use it as long as you tell me what her reaction is!

And here's another funny one:

Thomas: Christ, Dresden! You almost got me killed!
Harry: Don't be a baby. You're fine.
Thomas: You at least could have told me!
Harry: I DID tell you. I told you at Mac's that I'd give you a ride home but that I had to run an errand first.
Thomas: An errand is getting a tank of gas or picking up a carton of milk or something. It is not getting chased by flying purple pyromaniac gorillas hurling incendiary poo.
Harry: Next time take the El.

I look forward to "Sherlock Holmes 2", too. It's good to see people excited about Sherlock Holmes again! Personally, my favorite Holmes was played by Jeremy Brett (his was the most faithful to the books and Brett totally embodied the character), but Robert Downey, Jr.'s is exciting. :)

A second one's coming out?! YES!!! I loved the movie too. I liked how they portrayed Watson and Holme's friendship. In the other versions I've seen, Watson was like a sidekick or a lackey. In this movie, they're friends with their own strengths :)

Excellent, two challengers now xD

And by the way:

"The large man was rolling his shoulders, making cracking and creaking noises like a ship in a storm. I thought -briefly- of running but the thought lasted longer than my legs would have. I looked up and down the street, hoping that help would materialize, a chance patrol of the watch, a citizen on his way to work -a burly citizen on his way to work- a burly citizen on his way to work as a master swordsman- but it remained empty."

and:

"You!" he bellowed. "Fat man. Hold there!"
I realized that even when I stood to lose my life after an eternity of the most sophisticated and cruel torture know in history, it was still possible to be indignant at being called a fat man, when I merely have the comfortable shape of a well-lived middle age

Neville: Fourteen years ago, a Death Eaternamed Bellatrix Lestrange used the Cruciatus Curse on my parents. She tortured them for information, but they never gave in. I'm quite proud to be their son. But I'm not sure I'm not ready for everyone to know just yet.

I love adding quotes here, and I have another one.
Mcgonagal: Well, the devil with party and his rules! And since when did you accommodate the Ministry?
Snape: Headmaster, I too find it difficult to believe this mere coincidence; however, if we are to truly discover the meaning of these events, perhaps we should, for the time being, let them unfold.
McGonagall: What? Do nothing? Offer him up as bait? Potter is a boy! Not a piece of meat!
Dumbledore: I agree... with Severus. Alastor, keep an eye on Harry will you?

I have 2 favorite quotes (1 each from Harry Potter & LoTR) & they are, in a way, related.

In Harry Potter Dumbledore tells Harry that "I't our choices that define us not our abilities."

In LoTR Gandalf tells Frodo that we do not "get to choose the times we live in but only to choose what we do with the time that is given us."

The message in both quotes is about our choices.

I am 71 years old & know a lot about how choices can & do affect our lives.

Halt said nothing. He raised his hands in a 'See what I mean?' gesture.

He looks down at his legs as if noticing his outfit for the first time. Then he whips off his hospital gown, leaving him in just his underwear. "Why? do you find this'-he strikes a ridiculously provacative pose-"distracting?"

Sorry kinda long but I love finnick! :)

"Isnt he handsome?" (Fulvia asks when seeing Gale in his uniform)

Me, I like Molly Weasley, because she reminds me of my mom. I think that certain characters appeal or don't appeal to us based on our personal connection to the character. I guess the reason Harry Potter is so popular is that so many people identify with the characters.

182mrmcfluff

What is the discworld about??

183Thwaite
Jan 7, 2012, 2:19 pm

Discworld is a world shaped like a disc, floating through space on the back of a giant turtle. The city where a lot of the stories take place is sort of like ancient Rome, going through industrialization. There are around 40 books out, that are divided into different story arcs: there's a series about the City Watch, another about witches, Death and his family, wizards, and a few others.

The quote I posted is from Small Gods, about a young man whose god begins talking to him while he's training to become a priest. It's one of the more popular DW books, and a great place to start the series. Another great book to start with is Guards! Guards!, which is the first book of the City Watch cycle.
