Edited: Jun 17, 2012, 10:22 am

I'm not believing this: I'm #3! Whoo-ee.

Love that image I saw at the top this a.m. of the guy eating, maybe, chicken with his fingers and his cat gets it instead. My dad, an extremely patient animal lover, trained one of our cats to eat from his mouth---he'd have a piece of turkey or whatever held in his teeth but protuding, and kitteh would eat it. Unfortunately, we used to get the kitteh fairly drunk on Christmas catnip; she slipped and bit him on his not inconspicuous nose. He took it well, but that was the end of that trick. He then taught her some more.

So, a quiet day today?

ETA: Oops, forgot I was on Kath's thread for a moment and thought I was on my own.

Watcha cooking today, Kath?

LOL...good cat story, Gail. My dad bought me 14 chicks when I was a kid and when they grew into chickens, we'd give them beer on holidays and watch them stagger out of their coop into the garden ... providing at least an hour of hilarity for us young kids. The dogs used to try and herd them back into their coop and would give them all puzzled looks when the chickens refused to cooperate, fall over or just stumble about. My mom found out a few years later and that was the end of it.

Hello Kath.. I made it to the top 10! More porching today?

Caro.. LOL poor chickens.

rd... you might also like the buffalo chicken meatballs... with Blue cheese on the side for dipping?

Hi Paul ,I hope yours has been a good weekend, too! Nice to see you here :)

roni, hello and welcome!

okay.. ..

http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/food/recipes/buffalo-chicken-meatballs/

note: I used ground turkey, because there was no ground chicken to be found in my
comfort zone. They were yummy anyway.

They were made at Dan's request, because he likes to watch Rachael Ray ..
They are very easy, and yummy and I used a bit more celery and a skoche more bread crumbs..
Also, I used both regularhot sauce a buffalo sauce...

If this book is political (no matter what side it comes down on), I don't need it. Hate politics! All of it...
So, that makes me a little sad I'm missing a 5 star book. Still - as it happens - I have plenty to read! No deprivation of books to report ;-)

Mamie.. a good day, yes :) We even had some rain, no storms ~ but rain and that was nice.

Megan. Same tree, it is my June tree :P because I like it, and because I don't feel like redecorating.
The cat funny keeps growing.. at first there were only a dozen or so different cats, now there are so many!

rd.. hah! good idea :) But I tossed the envelope and the enclosed letter doesn't have an address.
There is a cell phone though.. should I give him a ring? *chuckle*

Ellen, Paul's idea is a good one, LOL I guess I will put it on the shelves in the Boro building.
( srsly, I don't think I can do it. .. What to do, what to do.......?)

So it is sticky and damp and humid, but not too hot... yet. I am still glad it rained.

I have an ARC from LT that I will use as a reading palate cleanser, A Simple Thing.
It is one of those that made me say "HUH?" when I got the notice.. but it will do nicely
for today, I think.

27Matke
Jun 18, 2012, 7:09 am

Morning, Kath.

Like Cee, I've come to despise all politics and only read anything remotely political if it's also historical. I won't go beyond the Eisenhower administration. The book? Donate it to your local Republican Club, if you can force yourself to go near it. Or mulch it, thereby doing a good green deed.

Love it when an ARC comes in like that and one thinks, "What was I thinking?!?!"

Housework today, appt. in p.m.; lots of reading is my agenda. Whaddaya doing?

28mckait
Jun 18, 2012, 7:14 am

Well, so far my only plan is to read the ARC.. lol
I got a lot of chores done yesterday. I will probably do some laundry.
I am still waiting to see what is going on with the water.. they didn't actually fix

I am trying to keep laundry and floors etc as clean as possible in anticipation
of a surprise water outage :P

Okay, no bridge jumping....you can always come to my house for some R&R.....bring the furkids, too...i have lots of room!

The annoyances of life pile up, all at once, because we're "older' and are supposed to be able to cope...Wonder what genius came up with that idea?

We need a filthy rich benefactor to step in and set up a place for us! Where did we decide was the ideal location?

78mckait

rd... Like attracts like?

Ellen. I know, I feel the same way. It isn't like it's a tragedy, but it is annoying.
At least I don't have to drive for miles and deal with some uncaring clerk who
doesn't know their job.. I am very envious of 59F temps. I might cry.

Jude.. we gotta get out moneys worth out of those blasted bridges. They are everywhere here!
But thank you for the offer :) and I agree with you and Ellen. Why is it harder ? Are we more impatient?

Mark.. we do indeed.

I am grumpy

79richardderus

I think ideal location will need to be multiple...one for summer, one for winter. Maybe near NYC and its bookshops, then near Portland/Seattle and their absence of a real winter and presence of bookshops.

Hmmm. Sounds like we need a cross-country bus, too.

80jdthloue
Edited: Jun 20, 2012, 11:27 am

I don't think it's a matter of "impatience"...more like, we know how things "should be"...how, maybe, they were, once.....and just can't stand the lax attitudes of today....Irresponsibility.....but, then, i'm usually pissed off about something or other...keeps me healthy

I forgot about all those bridges, round your way...but still, i'm lousy at funerals...

Sad, that, about your Ammy woes....Debbie bought a ceramic canister set from them....when it arrived the two smaller ones were totally shattered, and the bigger ones were very badly chipped! Is Ammy recycling its Returns, perchance? Hope you're sorted out...

I am always grumpy...it's just a matter of degree

hmmm Beer does sound good, Jude and rd.
I canceled plans to go out.. not feelin' it.
But I knew that when I woke up.

Got a frantic call from my sister to go and take care of Owen..
She was so frantic that I had no idea why I was running out the door and down the hill.
Rather than go into it all, I will just say that it turns out that all is well. I did have a good time
with my Owen, had him all to myself. That was nice. We sang songs and he had some food and
I rocked him for a while.. bliss, that! So no worries.

Replacement coffee pot came today and it is clearly not a return, still all swathed in plastic..lol
I do love Amazon. I also got a Consumer Reports recommended fish oil supplement..with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. I wanted to start taking them and giving them to Dunkers and maybe the kitties. I ordered them yesterday and they came today too.. yay amazon!

Retirement home(s) - one East Coast, one West Coast is a good idea. Let's be near major pop. centers, but not right in them, as the prices could be a little less. Also, let's have one supplementary locale in a more central, but southerly, spot. One where people who do not like long dark days in the winter could go for sun light during the day. People who like the dark, and love to hunker down can stay in the northern areas. I'm wondering... dare I say... maybe we could have a auxiliary location in Mexico?

ah, such nice dreams.

90richardderus
Jun 20, 2012, 3:48 pm

Mexico, I fear, isn't practical because of the whole narcostate/failed state problem. Is there some southerly location that a) isn't California and b) has a reasonable selection of real, not chain, bookstores?

Oxford, Miss.? Admittedly, the Deep South gives me hives, but a warm (ugh!) weather location for February visits would be nice.

Hi Kath - how's the new coffee pot? Once mine takes a dump I'll probably be getting something similar to yours. Would love the single-cup option, but with a scant 4 feet of counter space *total* I can only afford to have one coffee thingy at a time.

Hope you're reading something fluffy and fun!

Great Weather Goddess, it's hot here today. HOT. I only go out early a.m. except for appts. and the danged bridge games. Even appts. I try to get early as possible.

Hi jude... see, yet anther option...

Laura, I used it this morning, it was pretty easy to set up... so far so good!
I don't have a lot of counter space either, so I understand.

Gail.. you picked up that book? When you read it, let me know what you think :)
Magical realism yes... but, not so much steampunk for me. But I never say never when it
comes to books.. I almost always only go out in the early a.m. myself. It is very hot here, too.
mid 90's. It makes everything harder, doesn't it? I have had the a/c on almost nonstop in the dining room.
it does a great job of keeping the house cool . IN the evening, I put on the a/c in my bedroom to boost the cooling power. It makes a difference. Calm has been easier for me....there is a low thrum of stress..
that is always there, but not a lot of those moments that bring you to your knees. I am working on that.

Brit... it was fine.. especially after I had Owen to myself..I am sending good energy back at ya!
I am thinking about fireworks up your way :)

Prue, Malaysia huh? it is a nice place to visit, but too warm to live there imo! temperate is the key. Do we have a temperate state? Getting too close to 100F here for my taste today :( Maine is probably our best bet..

And on that note, how is that spare room coming along Cee... maybe we could take turns :)
Coffee pot did not do anything untoward, and there was coffee as a result of pushing the button. I forgot to set the timer... tomorrow maybe? And I agree. Nothing like babies to brighten your day. But I have
to say, I am also having to practice holding my tongue when it comes to big brother....

I don't see the word Berly here very often! welcome, and it is great to see you !

Ellen, Wayward Bus.. lol

Terri, me too! I have to get this other one out of here and down
to the post office. I guess I better do it this morning. I was hoping to get some help
it is large and awkward. But, that doesn't seem to be happening.

Megan.. nice to see you!! Hope all is well at your house !

Mark, I am pretty sure it is the cause of some of the script errors I have received in the past months.
Errors that caused my browser to hang and hang ... I had to reboot I am not sure.. I guess I should do some research on it. I am not in the mood right now though.. I can't get yahoo to load my mail on FF.. but it loads on Safari. I think I am going to ditch it. Aren't we all.. lol :)

I am a little freakish about downloading anything onto my laptop.
It is about 5 years old now, and serves me well. I keep it pretty clean..
I run Mackeeper at least twice a month, sometimes more often..
and store things online when possible, ( plaxo, Xmarks) I did make the
move to download FF when I bought the laptop, because I was used to it, and
liked some of the apps and so on.. ad blocker for one..

Chrome is something I will think about, but we shall see. I guess it is best to have more than one browser...
because some sites do not cooperate with certain browsers, although that happens less and less now.

116richardderus
Jun 21, 2012, 2:49 pm

Chrome was indeed your idea, thank you again, and also thank you for A Certain Something which appeared chez moi today.

Ad blocker's equivalent is available on Chrome, one of the things that shows up when you open a new tab is links to all Google's various properties including the app store.

I used to dress my three boys the same, a lot. I hated to shop. If I found a shirt that I liked, I bought it in three sizes. This was not good news for Cory. One time, I forgot about having an Olin Mills pi scheduled and had nothing figured out to put on any of them.. so in a moment genius(?) bought for boys sweaters, White with red and blue stripes and put one on each of them. Even Amy. It wasn't my best moment. To this Day
Cory ( the youngest) often buys striped sweaters... I think it was just so ingrained on his psyche.....

There is a book called Cutting for Stone

How about my neighbor who replaced his grass Cutting his Stones?

He is a very noisy noisy neighbor

Wow Kath - I am so far behind. Loved the discussion about ideal retirement destinations - Cornwall in England is one of my preferred as it has a splendid climate (seasonal but not drastic either way) sea air, history, relatively inexpensive and some great old bookshops. New Zealand would also be high on my list but the books there are scarily priced. Malaysia I am also wont to recommend despite the tropical climate as you can always escape to a Hill Station for the weekend (or stay there).
Next year I hope to visit the good old US of A and I am sure that there will be places there to add to the list - what about Colorado or Oregon? Have a great weekend.

Saw the Pic on FB...thought you were just getting up on the guy...for having a Lawn Mower...but no grass...

How did it get on fb? Hmmmm must be photobucket. Down now. He moves those stones around all the time. He has a slopedarea in the yard .. A small one. Grass is waist high. There are only stones in front...and along the side.

What a strange thing to do with stones- Is he bored?

164mckait
Edited: Jun 23, 2012, 12:46 pm

He is odd in many ways. The rocks have not made him many friends.
He is the one who put up a six foot fence 6 inches away from our stone wall..
I hope the wall holds up, because if it falls? I am pretty sure that he has reduced my
property values a fair amount. The neighbor on the other side has similar concerns.. He has been trying to sell the house for 3 years. The reason most people give for not wanting it is the hill and the neighbors rocks. He has every right to to put up a fence, of course, and with his less than friendly dog, I am glad
he did. But with the way our properties are configured and situated.. and the fact that his place
just looks plain ugly. There is a sloped area in his back yard. He pulled up the ivy that was on it
and it now has waist high grass growing there. He is only in his thirties, but he is like the
neighborhood weird little old man. He tries to avoid speaking to anyone. He is deaf, and uses
it as an excuse to not see anyone. I walk over to visit ( outdoors) now and then, to his dismay.
He is not a mean person, he loves animals. He is just ... odd. He is okay if you sort of show up in front
of him. He is a member of a large local family with a history of military and civil service. That is to say they join the police force, but both his father and uncle have had....troubles.

In other news. They now have a booth to tell you where to buy the best jeans to fit you.

http://www.me-ality.com/locations

I think I mentioned it when I heard about the first one, but now they have more.
I think it is genius, and that they need one for shoes. You're welcome.

Whatcha doing the weekend?

Sagamore Hill, where we planned to go, is closed for three years! The house part is, anyway, and that's the bit I love.

Renovation, restoration, and renewal...a new roof...I can see it taking three years *easy* but I am a disappointed camper.

So I will be flat on my back cause Homey don't take his last precious pain pill to sit around and gas! The troops are formulating their alternative amusement, since our guest isn't interested in the beach.

No beach either? I would go to the beach. With a book. How hot is it?

168richardderus
Jun 23, 2012, 9:42 am

No beach, no interest from our guest, so...

It won't even get to 90 today! More like 87. A few more degrees and I'll need to get out my woolies.

The troops are going to Old Westbury Gardens, a beautiful park about 10mi from here. LOTS of walking, so I ain't wanna go.

unfortunately no jeans sizers close by or even in reasonable driving distance yet, but what a great idea.

Stupidly did a bit of weeding, trimming, etc. without gloves: benadryl, wait for me! An incipient rash is already detected; Dh will be p.o.'d as this is a repeating issue for me.

Interesting lawn sculpture your neighbor has...one of ours has had a narrow glass door leaning against his garage for 4 years, since he did the back porch remodel. Odd.

My word, I was engulfed, not by flames, but by the Book Lists over at Paul's and Listmania. Talk about the ultimate time suck...

Happy week-end, Sweet Cheeks!

This neighbor removed his back porch. If you go out his kitchen door, you fall to your death. ( year 2)
For the first two years, he dug his back yard perfectly flat.. aside from the one small slope that used to wear ivy. If nothing else, he is interesting to watch.

Another neighbor .. who has ten green thumbs.. and lots of creepers and ground covers is going to give me some starts. Her daughter is going to tell me when they go on sale at Lowes :) I am pleased and appreciative. I should take a pic of the front of her house one day. She planted things all over her front steps. .. They will soon look like a waterfall of plants. Amazing. She has things growing which I hd no idea even existed and in some cases, are no longer available to buy anywhere. Pretty pretty

Your neighbor stories are cracking me up. Rocks. In his head, maybe.

I do feel lucky that we have pretty terrific neighbors. A couple houses down, there are some folks who have dogs that bark too much (poor things are just bored, I think), but we manage to ignore them.

174mckait

rd... I wouldn't want to go if it were 87 either.. unless it were a dry breezy 87, like in NM

Gail.. Sorry that you have no jeans booths nearby.. stay tuned! a year ago they only had one!
There is one close enough to me that I might go one day. I understand how you could get sucked into weeding with no gloves. I keep a pair on the front porch, to try to stop myself from doing that. I get rashy too.. but the worst of it is if I touch tomato plants. I am sorry that I missed noting you in 170.. I meant to but my mind wandered off. Hope it comes back soon.

Chell, I know.. it's that kinda neighborhood.. lol

Kim.. glad I could help :)

Ellen.. I know.. he is an odd duck.. something to do on a dull day.. watching what he is up to :P

Your neighbor sounds a little obsessive compulsive, or could he be somewhere on the autism spectrum? Could his rock moving be a grown-up male version of Temple Grandin as a child, running sand through her fingers over and over?

A State Trooper bought the house next to ours. The family there has a dog whose barking doesn't bother me one bit. I've definitely felt more secure since they've been there.

What ghost stories are you watching today, Kath?

Some people do like to garden with rocks. They are remarkably compliant; sit right where you put them, usually. And they discourage weeds... the ones you put the big rocks on top of...

I like gardening with rocks.

178The_Hibernator
Jun 23, 2012, 6:59 pm

I assumed that he was gardening with rocks when the subject was first brought up...but it's starting to sound like he's just eccentric. Most people who garden with rocks pick pretty rocks and arrange them artistically, I think. My grandma had a lovely rock garden.

179mckait
Jun 23, 2012, 8:28 pm

Nope, Rachel.. not a gardener. He is a landscape engineer by trade. Go figure.

Karen, rocks are part of the plan. We have them everywhere... I should post pics of my stone
walls one day. At least the ones I can still get to.

72.The House Between the Worlds by Marion Zimmer Bradley 3 stars I guess my appreciation of the genre
nudged this one up a few tenths of a point. So, three stars for a book that is about exactly what it sounds like it would be. Think Dungeons and Dragons.

4-6 Chicken Breasts or 1 Whole or cut up Chicken
1 Can of any kind of Beer
1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp Basil
1/2 tsp Paprika
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
1/2 tsp Kosher Salt

Put all ingredients into crockpot
If frozen cook on high 4-5 hours or low 8-10

This way it becomes a cook place to stash thinks you want to look at later. You need an invite.. no idea why.. but you can get one from your niece or pm me your email addy and I will send you one.

Perhaps someone can send me a PM explaining how to do that, or let me sit in my ignorance. (I may not benefit from knowing more about how to pin things.... I am so busy on the computer, these days. You all should know that I almost never cook up a recipe as it is suggested.
This one? I tossed all the ingredients in together ( after a buzz through the food processor for the vegies) ..
added the hot sauce... and tossed in enough bread crumbs to hold it all together...

I basically did the same with the buffalo meatballs, too. Either of these can and ( and should) be serived with more buffalo sauce and blue cheese or ranch dressing :)

Ellen..if you give up being determined to avoid something that will not only give you pleasure,
but be a good place to stash things you want to look at more closely later ( ahem ) let me know
and send me your email so I can invite you :)

Interesting cooking conversation! Unless it's a baked good, where proportions of flour/sugar/fat can be somewhat critical to the outcome, I usually con over a recipe to see if it fits our tastes (or my interests). Then I make a note of any adjustments--no bleu cheese, whathaveyou--try it out, and move on from there.

Oh yeah, right...you guys know me. Maybe once in 10 times I jot down the changes...otherwise (read: most of the time) I stand, shifting from one foot to the other, trying to remember what on earth I did the last time...

Sheesh, we should start a Cooking Club....Books and Food.....***burp***

What.. some people write down changes?
Where do they write them?
Why would they do such a thing when you can just start over fresh the next time?

Also I am rather shocked to find out that proportions can be critical in baking.. lol..
if it does look or feel right I add more of .. something. Or bake it more. Or less.. LOL

Oh, Rdear; I've got an old recipe in the back of my mind, called Crab Savannah--1 pound crab; four pieces toast, crumbled; some (how much???) cream, maybe a TBSP Worcestershire; salt; pepper. I think that's it. Cover with butter crumbs and bake maybe a half hour. I hope this is right, as I don't want to waste a pound of crab...

sigh. I think I can pull this off...

ETA: Lemon curd and pound cake? Whaddaya say?

213richardderus
Jun 24, 2012, 8:25 pm

Some cream in that recipe = 1 cup. I use white pepper or sweet paprika and black pepper. I also add an uncooked, chopped shallot to the crab before folding the cream into the meat. Bubbles on the edges and light golden crumbs, take it out and let it rest 5-10min so everything gets extra creamy instead of soupy.

I love serving this as an appetizer because folks want a whole dinner of it and so eat hearty when dinner comes.

Of COURSE you'd bring up a scrumptious party dish when I've just had dinner, and now I'm hungry again!

Like the curd & pound cake idea. Maybe make ginger whipped cream to go on top?

Dan's sister Marty has twice in the past few years been in trouble healthwise. The first time,
she was ( according to her..but I have doubts) she was laying at the bottom of the steps unable to move for days. Recently, her heart was an issue.

She needs medic alert. She also needs a new phone .. and she smashed her cell phone with a hammer.
She wants a phone with an answering machine .... because she never answers her blasted phone.
She had no idea that if you replace the main unit, that the extension .. plug in unit needs replaced too,
unless you buy the same phone. She doesn't want to. She wants bigger numbers etc. She was going to
go and buy these phones and get a new cell phone by herself tomorrow. She is clueless and I am stupid enough to have offered to go with her to help her. She may also want a laptop.

I found the perfect home phone for her on Amazon. She does have a computer.. hopefully she will get it...

I told her I will not go with her tomorrow unless she calls life alert ( or similar ) and orders it today.
Lifelines has no contract, and has a gadget that will detect a fall automatically. I sent her the info

So, in other words, I have to spend the morning ( pls goddess .. just the morning ) with her.
GAH! ( I do not like her.. we have a history that I have explained before... it isn't pretty )

I also have to get her a cell phone sorted out.. she wants on our acct but doesn't want to pay

So clearly I am insane.

226Crazymamie
Jun 25, 2012, 9:01 am

Kath - You are not insane. You are nice. Too nice - you put the needs of others before your own. Just make sure that sometimes you get to come first, too. Your needs are also important. Crossing my fingers that she will want the phone that you found on Amazon. Perhaps you could have a cut off time for the morning - say you have something you have to do in the afternoon? She wants to be on your account but doesn't want to pay - WHAT?!

227mckait
Jun 25, 2012, 9:15 am

I know.. sigh. It won't happen. I will see to it. To clarify..
She said she never uses her phone so she should only have to pay the 10$
a month for the extra line, not anything for usage. I say no way. I say she pays 25$
a month. That is much less then she would pay for her own account. sigh.
Whatever. I will use Duncan needing me to be home for an excuse. She is a huge fan of
Dunkers. I will not go into her care of animals, but lets just say that "getting rid of" is a part
of her vocabulary. And she would rather destroy than spend some $$ for simple surgery. SEe..
I shouldn't even talk about her, it makes me angry :P

She is unmarried, and has never really cared for even a plant. There are more stories that I have, as I said, told before and they are not pretty. Especially the one about her mother. Why am I doing this ? Nice?
No, clearly insane.

73. The Witch of the Portobello 2 stars

I allowed myself to get carried away by someone else's enthusiasm, and so I have only myself to blame.
I knew that I was not a fan of Coelho. The title did it's part to suck me in. I don't know how to say this without sounding as if I feel that I have reached my spiritual peak, because that is certainly not the case.
I have read perhaps, hundreds of books on spirituality. I have meditated, taken classes and given some.
Spirituality, healing, religion have been of huge interest in my life.

Philosophy. Mine is that we must each have our own. And it harm none, do what thou will, sums up
my own pretty well. Philosophical discussion bores me because those discussing it fancy themselves
to be intellectuals. ( perish the thought) There are some who simply feel that I am too ignorant to understand, Think what you will..

I don't know what to make of this. I enjoy a good retelling of the Jesus myth if it is good fun.
For instance The Last Day, is a favorite. This was no fun. I felt as if it were dragging my eyeballs clean
out of my head. But, as I said, I knew that Coelho wasn't my cup of tea.

And moving on :)

>233 mckait:

That's too bad about the Coelho...I read a couple of his books, years ago, but don't think I could make it through one, now...He is a bit of "an acquired taste" and can become boring/pedantic rather quickly...but, you survived! Now, go find something good....

As we previously discussed, you and I share stories about horrid relatives we inherit. I've closed the door on Will's cousin. I simply cannot tolerate him and his selfishness, bitterness, negativity and nastiness. I'm so sorry Marty is in your life.

I did go to the doctor to check out the possible broken ribs even though the pain had retreated some after a pain pill and a relatively good night of sleep. They did x-rays and found no fractures! Called it a very bad bruise. Pain continues to retreat some, so I think I'll be fine, eventually. I bought some Aleve and I hope that will help for the nighttime. I hate restless, pain filled nights.

I had a lovely visit with a friend who "moonlights" as a handyman. He will be fixing the roof at my rental which sprang a leak around one skylight. He might also build my deck, but probably next year. He is leaving for Burning Man before I can get the plans approved by the Board here. We did talk our way through the sit plan and the preliminary sketch I have of a deck and realized my actual property is much smaller than what I am using! Gah! The backya was developed a good 10-12 deeper, into the school districts set aside green space, and the site plan shows I only have about 15 feet from the house to the property boundary.

I think I'll just send the site plan and the drawings to the board and see if they see the issue. And what they will tell me to do. I need to remember I am not planning on living in this house for many more years.
