BOOK#69

A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly

Many thanks to Stasia for recommending this book. It is an incredible piece of work and breathtakingly beautiful.

Using Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy as a springboard, Jennifer Donnelly weaves a rich tapestry of history, romance, poverty, the desire to succeed, the love of books, and a turn of the century murder.

When young Mattie Gokey's mother dies, she is overburdened by the needs of her father and siblings. Longing to escape poverty and the back woods of upstate New York, Mattie's love of books propels her forward to a dream of education and fulfillment of her dream.

Highly recommended.

Lovely new thread, Linda!

Funny, I couldn't get into A Northern Light when I tried it. There was a copy in our room when we stayed once at an inn on Big Moose Lake. But I'm a bit of a stickler for accuracy in historical fiction; since I'd just read a non-fiction account of the Grace Brown case, I found things early on in the novel that just didn't fit the facts as they are known -- at least as understood them, anyway. At least when Dreiser novellized the case, he changed the names so his liberties (and there were many) seemed a bit more palatable to me. I'm glad you liked it, though.

Hi to all. Today's appointment with the doctor who previously did neck fusion surgery at C4-5 led to the fact that he needs to perform fusion at C5-6 and 6-7 right away...as in next Thursday. Yikes. I cannot do this because I have to get the new semester started.

I'll have multiple fusion surgery at the end of August. I admit I'm a tad depressed today. It simply will take some time to process the fact that he will need to adjust the original fusion and then do two more..

I'm trying to wrap my mind around it all...

After a few months of controlling my book buying obsession, I brought these home today:

Ten books for $2.00 was quite a bargain.

I volunteered at my local library. There was a Young Adult book festival. Approximately 30 authors were in attendance (none of those listed above). It was a huge success and I'm ever so glad because my dear friends at the library worked so hard to pull this off.

In addition to those listed above, I paid full price for a book of an author who was in attendance

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown looked too good to pass up.

Thanks to Will I was able to volunteer and have a wonderful time. He helped me simply by being there with me and volunteering to assist.

Thanks to all for stopping by. Your kind words mean a lot.

My reading slowed substantially this year when compared to last. Hopefully the recovery process will allow time to read.

For now, I finished two books thus far this month:

Continuing on my quest to read all the Newbery award winning books, this is now added to those finished:

BOOK#70

Savvy by Ingrid Law

When members of the Beaumont family turn 13, a magical event happens and they gain their "savvy". Savvy manifests itself in different ways to each person. One Beaumont cannot live near water or devastation occurs; another is a walking lightening rod whose hair perpetually sticks strait in the air. Mibs Beaumont's 13th birthday sadly coincides with a near fatal car accident for her beloved father.

Hoping that her savvy equates to the power of healing, Mibs desperately wants her father to live. Needing to travel to the hospital located far from her home, Mibs hides in a bus filled with pink bibles and driven by a lovely, quiet, passive man. As her friend and various family members travel with her, the journey becomes quite interesting.

This 2009 Newbery honor book was delightful, yet seemed to lack "savvy". Unlike other Newbery books that are stellar, this one was mediocre.

BOOK #71

Dangerous Neighbors by Beth Kephart

This was a National Book Award Finalist and I'm left shaking my head regarding the rules set forth for this accolade.

Two sisters are very close. When one dies in a tragic ice skating accident, the other is left with severe guilt, grief and angst.

The pace is boringly slow. The chapters switch from present to past tense. The backdrop of the Philadelphia Centennial fair of 1876 seemed uninteresting.

The good news is I only paid .20 for this book yesterday and it will quickly be given back to the library wherein another unsuspecting reader will be lured by the price and a description on the back cover that sounds like a promising read.

**looks for a mom's hat to place on head; oh dear, all I can find is a ball cap with a feed store logo. I have always been a rather quirky mom but here goes-deep breath--**

Does your doctor say it is SAFE for you to wait until the end of the month? I can't help feeling that there was a reason he wanted to do it this Thursday. I understand your deep committment to your job, but if the darn neck is deteriorating it may be more important to get thee to the surgery.

**throws hat in corner**

Loved your collection of book covers! They look so beautiful that way. I had picked up Never Let Me Go at a sale at the end of last year and plan to read it later this month.

Linda, on one hand I'm sorry to hear that you'll need surgery; however, I hope that it is successful, and that it provides you with significant relief.

Obviously I don't know the details of your situation (and even less about its surgical management), but I share streamsong's concerns about waiting until the end of the month to have surgery, and putting work ahead of your health. However, I trust that you are making a wise decision to postpone it until then.

It rained today and this evening, leaving the grass soaked and the air humid. We spent the day with family members that I adore and laughed, ate cupcakes and drank coffee.

I finished another small book -- a disappointing one.

BOOK #72

Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn. My good friend and librarian told me that Mary Downing Hahn writes great scary novels.

A blended family moves to the country. The host of characters includes a mother with two children, a father with a bratty little girl and her ghost friend Helen.

While the story was well crafted, I couldn't connect with it and cannot recommend it. It will go back to the library sale table tomorrow.

BOOK#73

Tangerine by Edward Bloor.

This is more than a coming of age story. It is a tale of awakening to the reality that family members can indeed harm, both psychologically and physically.

Thirteen year old Paul Fischer wears super duper coke bottle glasses. His family repeatedly tells the story that unfortunately he looked at a solar eclipse too long thus resulting in his impaired vision. Somehow Paul knows this just isn't true.

When his family moves to Tangerine Florida his life changes dramatically. A nerd, a geek and a quiet soul accustomed to watching his parents adore and idolize his older football hero brother, Paul seeks for carve an identify for himself.

When the town of Tangerine crumbles into pockets of sink holes and it is discovered that corrupt officials never followed codes, more than sticky mud invades the consciousness of Paul.

While his Pleasant Valley Sunday mom wears just the right clothes and designs her house way beyond Martha Stewart mode, his father the engineer paves the wave for his older son to become the star, at all expense.

When the middle school of Tangerine collapses, Paul is transported to a new school, one where there is poverty, toughness and more reality of what life is all about.

Joining the soccer team enables Paul for find friends and a sense of belonging. While his brother remains the high school hero back home, all is not well in the town of Tangerine or the home of the Fischers.

When Paul realizes the actual reason he needs to wear thick glasses, he confronts very difficult family dynamics.

I highly recommend this book and thank Stasia for noting it on her thread.

4.5 Stars!

BOOK #74

Bruce Brooks is a two-time Newbery honor award winning author. All that Remains

This book consists of three stories relating to grief and those left behind. It was a quick read and worth the time spent. Cousins help their aunt's partner provide a proper burial after their aunt dies of aids. Dealing with a redneck, judgmental town isn't easy, but these young adults find a way to honor their beloved aunt's wishes while developing renewed respect for her partner.

An incredibly immature, self absorbed young man makes a promise to a dying uncle. In reluctantly helping his effeminate cousin navigate his way through macho bully land, the lessons learned by the begrudging young man are invaluable.

When a young spunky girl insists on joining three boys in a game of golf, together, the team helps the girl move along in life after the death of her father.

We call Lily Harriet Potter. If you look closely you will see that the white lined marking above her nose in the middle of her face has a lightening like bolt appearance.

Today I'm heading for a nuclear stress four-five hour test at the request of my cardiologist who wants this done before surgery. He is a kind and competent man and I trust his judgment.

Now, how to walk on a treadmill when my legs are weak, my balance is off and my neck is in severe pain...this should be VERY interesting.

Genny..It is good to see you here. I am sorry to be out of touch on your thread.

Kath...what a nice thing to say, you are indeed a nice, loving person!

Happy, Happy Birthday to you today Terri!

Hi There Caro...How great to see a post from you!

Mamie...Indulgence indeed, all for a very reasonable price. That site is dangerous to me, but I have great fun when I check their prices and keep another screen open and compare them with Amazon or other places where I obtain books. The down side is that bookcloseouts.com is a warehouse like business and thus you cannot always get the book you might be searching for..that is a distinct advantage that Amazon has.

I discovered this site from a LT member back in 2008 and naturally, my book stash has grown beyond my reading capability.

Morning Judy. Yes, it is difficult for Lilly to sit still, but she is maturing nicely and isn't as hyper as she was a few months ago.

Mark
I haven't read Graceling but with your recommendation, I'll do so.

I await test results from yesterday. The cardiologist is none too keen about this surgery. He said he will look at yesterday's results today and call me to see if he gives the go ahead...with the understanding there is a "moderate" risk involved.

After the previous neck fusion two years ago I developed supra tackacardia and my pulse raced 180-200 many times resulting in trips to the ER via ambulance. Finally I had heart ablation surgery and haven't had tackacardia (spelling) since.

The cardiologist said "Let's hope lightening doesn't strike you twice!" I think he will reluctantly give the go ahead -- and perhaps will be in the operating room.

The stress leading up to this surgery is heavy. Last week my long-time neurologist called and strongly told me NOT to have multiple fusion. She is very much against fusion of most of my neck.

Because I like the neurologist, I then called those who know I need this, met with them and both my primary care doctor and the pain management team affirmed that it has to happen.

All confirmed that the surgeon does not rush into surgery. If he says it has to happen, then it has to happen.

In the end, I came to the decision that while I care about and respect my neurologist, I am going forward. Living with level nine pain day and night is not what I want for my life.

I'm more than ready to get this over with!

BOOK#75

The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing.

What a book! What a story! What a writer!

David and Harriett are unique individuals and different from their work group and their peers.

In their minds, finding each other equated to a perfect match.

Living a life of upper middle class in the countryside of England, they purchase a huge house, unaffordable even by their standards.

I couldn't relate to David and Harriett and the author did a great job at portraying them as selfish and self absorbed individuals who, together as a team, double the narcissistic behavior.

Expecting family to support their choices, immediately they decide to have many children. Much to the consternation of parents, relatives and friends, in rapid succession, they have four healthy children.

Finding herself pregnant with the fifth proves problematic. The child appears to battle in the womb, wearing Harriett to a frazzle.

Pounding, punching and kicking until she is bruised, the 11 pound baby is born. Child number five is antisocial, kills animals, tries to kill his brother and is consequently institutionalized.

Rescuing Ben from the institution and returning him to home is fraught with drama as Ben becomes increasingly "evil."

Lessing does an excellent job portraying a society that blames the sociopathy of the child on mother for her lack of ability to love the child, while paradoxically portraying a very unlikeable mother and father.

This is a disturbing and worthwhile read.

Thinking of you today as always, Linda. It's nice to hear about what kind doctors you have, who are willing to get together and discuss what is really best for you - it seems to be something I don't hear about much these days. Can only imagine the pain and anxiety you're experiencing in preparation for next week Thursday. Hugs to you! And bookcloseouts is a very dangerous place, indeed! I'll be heading over there soon to check out the titles you purchased - with such good prices (even with shipping), it's really difficult to resist a book binge.

Pain level 9? I am floored and I am so, so sorry --I don't even know what to say. Continuing my prayers.

I've had The Fifth Child and Ben, in the World on my radar since I read We Need to Talk About Kevin a few years ago. That one is on my most disturbing books list (if I ever get around to making such a list :-)). Great review.

That was not a book binge, but a therapy moment and the first step in preparing for after the surgery. You've got to be well stocked to get through your recovery. Heck, it might even take a few more shopping trips. You'll be reading the rest of us to shame while healing!

Thanks to all for your good wishes.

I rec'd. word from my cardiologist that he cleared me for surgery, with some clear instructions to the surgeon and the anesthesiologist.

I was taken aback during the nuclear stress test when he told me that I had a heart attack after the previous neck fusion surgery. I never heard him use that term before. I simply thought that I had supra tachacardia numerous times which lead to a heart ablation.

Now, it is clearer to me why he wanted to be sure my heart was strong enough for multiple fusion surgery.

So, I am now moving forward to August 23rd at 1:00 p.m. for surgery. One of the stipulations is that I stay in the hospital for a longer period of time so that they can monitor my heart post surgery. I'm ok with that.

Today was a difficult day...lots of pain. I'm ready for the surgery.

There were many blessings of the day. Our puppy Lilly has opened miraculous doors! During our daily walks with Lilly, two little neighborhood girls (five and two) started to walk with us. Their parents are lovely people and we enjoy getting to know them.

Both children are hearing impaired and wear hearing aids. The older girl is very shy--she was misdiagnosed for two years and lived in a quiet world during that time. Whereas the younger girl was tested soon after birth and she is quite outgoing with an incredible sense of humor.

Increasingly Ashley (the older child) is talking more and interacting. Her speech therapist asked her mother what changed in her life in the last month and she wondered about the people Ashley is mentioning often -- Mr Will, Miss Linda and Lilly!

The therapist strongly believes that as a result of Ashley's interactions with Lilly, a sea change has occurred and a key to a locked door is now open.

It is a win/win situation since we are becoming fond of the girls and they in turn are feeling comfortable with us.

We went to a community celebration tonight with the family and what a joy it was to see "Mr. Will" sitting on the ground with Ashley as she listened to a musical group perform. At one point, she was clapping her hands and then showed Will how to clap along. It brought tears to my eyes!

Life is good!

Life is, indeed, good.

Your neurologist is to be praised for precipitating a major meeting and a clearing of the conceptual air. Level nine pain is not endurable long term and it's a testament to your sheer unadulterated meanness and vigor that you have endured so long.

But Thursday next holds out real promise for your long, long, long nightmare to recede. All of us who know you and care for you are working our energy magic to create a new reality around you, one without dark blotches of pain and red smears of sadness and frustration.

It will work. *smooch*

Lilly also enamored herself to an older couple who live across the street. When I walk Lilly she naturally stops and walks up the path of Dottie and Tom. She sits at their doorstep, gives a soft bark and then waits for them to open the door. They graciously invite her in and she then proceeds to gently leap on the lap of Dottie, who experiences many health issues.

She loves Lilly and now has a basket of toys for her. She mentions that Lilly gives her purpose and she feels better when she can be with her.

The healing power of Lilly is incredible to behold.

BOOK #76

The Outcast by Sadie Jones

This book packs a wallop and is definitely not for those who like soft, rosy stories.

It is a book that will haunt me for awhile...a long while.

As stated in the opening chapter, two people went into the woods for a picnic and only one returned!

When young Lewis witnesses the drowning of his mother, his life spins way out of control while his father and the upper crust social strata of 1940-1950's England encourages and foments denial.

When his father rapidly marries and Lewis' feelings are pushed further and further underground, he acts out in ways that harm himself and those around him.

This is a graphic novel -- not in the sense of cartoon like pictures -- but in the reality of stark images written at the hand of a very adept and powerfully skilled author.

Struggling to write a review about the awesome power of this book, I'll simply say it is a very compelling look at the phoniness of society. It is an incredible story of a young man struggling to find meaning in a very crazy environment.

While those around him are quite comfortable in their accouterments, lavish lifestyles, dinner parties and social status, their out-of- reality behaviors literally drive Lewis crazy!

While the adults emotionally and physically abuse their children behind closed doors, they quite comfortably drive their Rolls Royce cars out into the guilded land of la la land.

Highly recommended! Thanks to Porchreader (Amy) for recommending this back in 2008.

Five Stars

Linda my dear, I'll be thinking of you more than usual this week. You've been going through such tough times and I deeply hope that this surgery will bring you the relief you so desperately need and deserve.

You've gotten lots of great books in the meanwhile, and read a few too! I've added The Fifth Child and The Outcast to the wishlist, both happily available at the library (as I'm trying to slow down my out of control book-buying!) I see you picked up quite a few Mary Hooper titles, I read my first book by her, Fallen Grace (well, listened to actually) just a few months ago based on Kerry's recommendation and really enjoyed it, so much so that I rushed to get Newes from the Dead. I'll look forward to your comments on the At the House of the Magician trilogy as wouldn't mind reading (or listening to) those either.

Love the pictures of Lilly and so glad to know she's a) calming down and being a good girl and b) enabling you to meet wonderful little girls who in turn benefit from her mere presence. Sounds like a win-win situation all around!

Sending you gentle hugs and best wishes.

Linda, I just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you. Best wishes and good thoughts and prayers.

Lilly sounds like she needs a job and you may want to check into being a Therapy Team when she's a little older and you're feeling better. It's very, very rewarding volunteer work.

Hugs to you, dear one.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Will is going to give me a call when the surgery is over and I will put a post on as soon as I can. I will be going out about 6:30PM EST but I have my cell but no internet access until later, so if I haven't posted by then, I will as soon as I get home. (I forgot what time surgery starts and 6 hours of surgery may take her past my going out time) I know we are all praying wholeheartedly that this surgery will relieve Linda of the pain that she has been suffering for a long period. We will think positive, send the positive vibes her way, and pray diligently.

I spoke with Linda..... she is okay, a little frustrated, but much more forgiving than I would be. She believes that there is a reason for this to have happened the way that it did. That's our Linda, though. She is planning to rest up at home for the week, and take care of herself as much as possible. I know that I for one will continue to send energy and healing her way. I am sure I won't be the only one..

It's funny isn't it that we would go to the hospital hoping against hope that it will be postponed or even better not necessary and then to be profoundly let down when it does actually get postponed.

Grit your teeth dear lady, have forbearance and things will come right. xx

Hello To All

My heart is very happy because of all the outreach. The power of love is an incredible force and to feel this is beyond words.

There are many blessings that occurred and despite the incredible frustration, I am going to focus on those.

I was prepared for the surgery. I knew it would be a rough recovery and I was/still am totally confident in the surgeon.

The weeks leading to the surgery were stress filled.

a) My long-term neurologist was very aggressive in telling me I should not have the surgery. That the surgeon was rushing into this....and many other very powerfully stated comments occured.

Because she has helped me so often in the past, and because I love this woman, it was emotionally draining to feel verbally assaulted.

b) My cardiologist rightfully had concerns regarding the fact that during the recovery from the previous neck fusion surgery I had multiple tachycardia episodes resulting in heart ablation surgery.

Thus, in order for his approval, I had to have a nuclear stress test and receive a loving, but strongly worded message that I should be sure I was absolutely willing to go through another fusion surgery. I passed the test and he agreed I could go forward with requirements he asked of the anesthesiologist. We then agreed I could go forward.

c) Because the beginning of the academic semester is happening at Lehigh, I had to frantically get things in place during my absence. This meant long days and a lot of stress.

After all the above, I was more than ready to proceed.

Yesterday, Will took me to the hospital, sat by my side as the iv line was inserted (I'm a very hard stick and the nurse was able to insert the iv on the first try...I took that as a good sign).

I was wearing the hospital gown (God, I hate those things), the blue booties on my feet, neck in level nine pain and was cushioned on blankets, listening to the rhythm of the pre operating room, I felt very emotionally prepared.

I met with the anesthesiologist and her assistant; I met a resident who was going to observe the surgery and I was literally minutes away from the injection that would put me in la la land.

The surgeon came to my beside and and humbly proceeded in a very kind, gracious, loving way to apologize profusely that his staff forgot to arrange a very important piece of equipment that he needed in the operating room in order to do the surgery. He was wearing his surgical attire and thus he too was ready to go!

With a profound sincerity and respect for my frustration, honestly, I didn't count, but I think he apologized twenty times. Thus, while I was exceedingly frustrated, I was not angry.

He is a buddhist and I am now compelled to learn more about buddhism. The nurse commented that it is highly unusual to see such humility in a surgeon.

When I returned home, once again there was a phone call stating he took personal responsibility to arrange an operating room for next Thursday; he personally made sure the equipment will be in the operating room next Thursday and he cleared his calender to operate next Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

His staff then called and apologized. While I noted I was very frustrated, it is not my style to yell and scream when situations are non intentional. They made an error and heaven knows I've made my share of mistakes in my 59 years on this planet.

I know that Dr. Flaytan most likely was firm and fair about their error. I cannot envision him having a fit. And, I very much admire his understanding and acceptance of human mistakes, while ensuring that a process is in place so this does not occur again.

I had a few minutes of a melt down after I rec'd. the calls, primarily because I needed stress release, but also because of the respect I had for the way in which the situation was handled.

And yet more blessings from this wonderful group which now propel me forward to a week of rest and reading....basking in a light that shines brightly.

Thanks to all!

You, my dear, are an inspiration, because I know for a fact that I would not have been nearly as gracious or understanding, no matter how much the doctor apologized! lol

Rest well this next week! ((hugs))

Ditto, Linda. More hugs to you. I'm glad you had a compassionate surgeon, at least. He's a credit to Buddhism. I hope the coming days go well for you leading up to the rescheduled operation. Thanks for letting us know the story.

I see saintly qualities in you, m'dear. Reasonable explanations and profound repeated apologies notwithstanding, I couldn't take this set-back with that much equanimity. Let us hope it makes the doctor treat you like you were his own flesh and blood when the time comes!

Wow. You certainly handled this snafu with as much dignity and grace as anyone could hope for. As you said, we all make mistakes, and getting angry about someone else's mistake does little good. I hope that you have a restful week ahead, beginning of the term or not, and that you are mentally and spiritually prepared for next Thursday's surgery.
