This is a good cozy series, I also liked the first, Wicked Autumn. I have decided that I like the folks of Nether Monkslip very well indeed. It isn't Three Pines, but I do enjoy my visits. recommended.
rd.. I have had so little time to read this week, I struggled when it came to reviewing this one.
I hope you reached your PearlPoint... for me it is whenever I choose it to be. I guess I am not a very good Pearler.
Gail.... well, it has been busy, with Dan getting home. Lots of laundry and putting away of things. His version and mine. But all is done and I have a pot of pork chops and rice for dinner.. and one last load in the dryer and whew! Done! I hope.
I'm so glad I finally finished this one. I wanted to be reading so badly, but it just wasn't in the cards this time... It took me all week for one little book. I do hope that anyone who likes Three Pines will consider giving these books a whirl.. I like them.
Well, Dan sort of propped up the trellis .. I hope he does it properly tomorrow. I guess he is taking a vacation from his vacation. He goes back to work tomorrow.. All day it has been blaring TV and newspaper all over . I haven't said a word, but I do know that after an afternoon of baseball, there is football in my future. I guess I will be retiring to my room early?
So I will try to give the threads a peek, but the dryer stopped, and I need to get the last load out of there..

Good morning..!
Hi Paui, Roni, Cee, jude, Joanne, Mark, Stas, Donna, Kim, rd Mamie, Gail, Joe, Lynda & Linda...Deb, Terri & Valerie!
Please know that I appreciate that you were visiting me yesterday when I was absent from my own brand new thread :) and forgive me for giving a group welcome?
Yesterday turned out to be a busy and frustrating one to start off with.. and then I sort of buried myself in a book as much as possible. The afternoon brought me a visitor that is a friend of Dan's/ She was dropping off a book and she stayed forever. And you know how it is, now and then the threads just seem to be overwhelming...so..
I am reading True Believers: A Novel by Kurt Andersen, which is a vine read and so far I am really glad I requested it. This one came off the Last Harvest list, which is basically a bath of orphan books.. So far, pretty good.
Gail, I really like the G.M. Malliet books.. I'm glad you liked the first one. I think this is a keeper, and a series to follow, for me. One series among too many that I want to folow.
I appreciate the visits and well wishes.. sorry I was absent :) I hope that you understand if I am behind on your threads today?

So..... the plumber that Dan had in earlier this year...( the ones I don't like ) did not resolve the problem with the downspout/drainage.( shocking) So.. he was out there digging to redirect the drainage. He has told me 3 times how much money he is saving us by doing this himself instead of hiring a plumber. I told him that I think we would be better off hiring a plumber who knows what he is doing... ( that ticked him off) so the problem is resolved once and for all. He was pissy.. went out.. and cut through the electrical lines to the garage. Now we have to hire an electrician. And he is slamming around here like a maniac. Call in to electrician.
yay.
Also, Comcast has been playing up all day. Mostly with the tv, also with the phone.

I (warning, I am going to shout now) HATE grumpy husband persons slamming around the house like maniacs after they have proven themselves an inappropriate task master. Wounded pride hurts huh?

rd... a do over? No one has ever given me a do over before.. I'll let you know how it works out. Santorum...lol.. that was pretty funny.
Stas, nothing major just an entire day filled with annoyances.. including .. I made a bad choice about what to make for dinner. :PP
Megan, Thanks for the grumpy husband sympathy. The negative energy was roiling around again. While he was away, I smudged and have had my salt lamps on the entire time, in every room in the house. But yesterday pretty much put paid to my efforts. I guess I will need that do over!
TLo.. I am surprised by how much I am liking it.. I think it is partly and age thing? My age is close enough to the main character's that I can relate to her experiences and her thoughts. We will have to compare notes :)
Ellen, I think it will settle down tomorrow.... as for today, Johnny.. friend and electrician dropped in yesterday after he got Dan's phone call.. and will be here at 8. I hope he can sort it quickly.. and cheaply!
I spent a chunk more money than I expected to this past couple of weeks...
Terri... it's annoying when the TV isn't working, like yesterday. Worse though, when it's the internet. Then the phone thing.. at first I thought it was just caller ID .. then I picked it up a couple of times and had no dial tone. GAH! The trellis.. well, that was supposed to be the project, not the downspout. He pounded in a couple of nails and secured it with electrical ties. This is not a fix. I thought it was just to keep the flowers alive and that he would go ahead and fix it ( the plan is to use the method I suggested last year when this one went up.. but we will see) It looks terrible, and I really hope that he does it right, soon. It is only common sense that something like that needs to be secured more than just by 4 screws on the bottom.
Nice to see you visiting, Valerie :) Hope you had a good sleep !
calm.. thanks.. you summed it up perfectly...

GAH!!!! This itching is driving me crazy. I have come to the conclusion that I have poison sumac not poison ivy. I did cut down a sumac "tree" that had taken hold in the rock wall. According to the internet searches, that must be it, because damn all if I can find any poison ivy in my yeard. I have become a little obsessed looking for it. My arm has been on fire for days.. and a few spots here and there, as well. The sweatshirt did not help. sigh.

Sumac! Kath, my mom was very, very sensitive to sumac and poison ivy and such -- would break out and suffer terribly from it. I'm told that once, before my time, my dad unknowingly cut down some sumac and used it for firewood. Apparently, the heat/smoke/vapors radiating out from the fire contained whatever it is that causes the allergic reaction . . . very, very bad. :(
62 Richard, sorry to hear how bad your hands are today.

My husband is finally looking like his normal self. A weeks worth of facial hair was a tad much for me, but with the sores finally healing, he was able to use the razor today and I get my wonderfully smooth husband back!! Ahh, the simple pleasures of life. :)

Mornin', Kath. Here's a cup of coffee...
Sleep has eluded me this a.m. and so I'm stopping by to check in and hope that your itchy has improved. I deeply empathize with you on this problem.
Been working a tiny bit on the poetry class. Love it. Haven't even looked at the history class yet. We're off to breakfast and the grocery shopping this morning.
Hope Mr. Stinky is in a better mood today.

Hi Terri.. I appreciate the sympathy :P. I have cut Sumac before.. it is rather obnoxious around here.. and had no reaction. That's Why I didn't give it thought. Plantain ( mashed w milk ) is good for it, but weirdly, I can't find any in my yard... I have small outbreaks in several places , but my right arm is the worst . Your poor mom!
Valerie, glad to hear that your husband is feeling better :) Very itchy :(
Hi Gail... I was up early too.. took my time getting here. Sorry that you are able to empathize, and hope that you never experience it again . It seems that it broke out little by little for several days, and my tolerance level has gone down each day. gah!
I'm glad to hear that you are liking the poetry class. I'm impressed by those of you who are improving your minds, while I sit here drooling on my keyboard :P
I honestly don't know why it took all day yesterday to do what Dan did. Of course, the morning was busy, as he helped John do the repair. But filling in the ditch .. I could have dune it in 15 minutes. Then there was a pipe he had dug up. The one his favorite plumber siad was fine.. it was filled with muck and mud. It needed to be cut, but really only in half... so the guy that Johnny knows can come by and pick it up. He was out there until 8 pm. now, he cut the pipe in 4 pieces.. and it took hours so ? I just don't get it. He ended up exhausted & filthy and frankly.. this always doing things the hard way is annoying, and habitual . whatever. The job is done, and with luck, I will not have ice dams this winter that cause my back porch to have 3 inches of ice ...so that taking Dunkers out is a near impossibility.
I myownself will always look for the easiest and most efficient way to accomplish as task. I'm pretty good at that... and it rarely makes any difference in the result. But I appreciate that he tried. Even though I would rather have just hired my favorite plumbers and paid them, instead of Johnny, and had intact power lines and Dan not worn to a nub after... all that.
So, today I get to pick a new book. Not sure what it will be.

That sounds like a fabulous plan - and picking a new book is always fun. Oh I love leftover chili - I think it is even better the second time around. Perhaps I make a batch of chili - see, now you have solved my dinner problem! Thanks, Kath!

The Mud Sisters by Edie Claire New ebook, no t-stones. chick lit, borderline YA .. I like Edie.
I need something light. I appear to be getting sick. Freezing all morning.. skin hurts to touch.. feel generally like I'm "coming down" . Have itchy spots.
I just ate a little bit of soup and took some aleve. Hope that sorts me out. :( WTH I say??! I am going to lie down..
Damn I say

Oh no! Get lots of rest, Kath! Hopefully passing out for a few hours will do the trick! I need a nap today as well. Didn't get to bed till past 2 in the morning since the little guy woke up every hour.....

rd..Yep.... slept much of the afternoon, went to bed early... wakened by sirens at 5:30. I am feeling much better than I did last night... about the same as I felt this time yesterday. Not terrible, just a little on the not wonderful side. I'm sure I'll survive. Fevers always make me fill like I am at death's door :P My regular temp is 97 ish.. and it was up to 102 last night :P Probably normal now. I don't have that broken glass feeling...
Valerie.. It did help, I hope you got a nap, too.
Terri... cute gif :) How are you?
Hi Ellen.. it did its best ...the Aleve..
I had to go out to the store for a few items this morning... felt pretty punk when I got home, but some ginger ale revived me.

I guess if you are not going to slow down and take care of yourself voluntarily, your very smart body will take over and make you take a time out.
Don't push it. The world isn't going anywhere without you ;-)
Hope you feel better very soon. hugs

Good morning Caro and Lynda and thank you ... I was much better yesterday, feel the same today, just an undertone of not feeling well. I'm sure I will be back to normal tomorrow, despite my secret dramatic certainty that I have West Nile, due to the fact that I have about a dozen mosquito bites on my legs.....lol
I didn't start reading yet, but I am pretty sure it will be Moloka'i when I do..I slept til 7, and started a big pot of hot sausage to cook. I like to cook it slow and long to make a good sauce... yummy!
Whatcha all doing?

Morning Kath - Hot sausage and yummy sauce! Sign me up!! I am thinking about making a big pot of potato soup. Not sure what is on the agenda for today - probably taking pictures for our furniture like Caro suggested before it all gets loaded on the moving trucks. I don't want to have to do it all at one time, so if I start now and do one room a day...

Just checkling in from the Bridgewater Book Festival! Can you believe it? Bought a book by a local author, North of Supposed to Be ....more later!
99mckait
rd, sausage apparently a success....Dan liked it. I tasted the sauce, and it was good.
Paul, I am fine, thanks.. once I got moving and did some cleaning and so on, I felt fine.
Mamie, you're welcome any time! Taking pictures is a great idea, I'm glad you're doing it.
Calm, nice to see you ! http://www.bridgewaterbookfest.com/ was a success as far as I'm concerned. We , my sister and I were there for about 3 hours, and talked to all of the authors and had a good time. I only took enough $ for one single book. On purpose. I cannot be trusted around a bunch of authors hoping that you will buy their book. There were several I would have liked to have bought, one of them.. was out of stock! I will get it on Amazon though.. The author said that Ammy and B&N both pay him the same amount.... That one is called Tears of Deceit and is by Regis Schilllken. His business card is beautiful and his book looks Very interesting ! I have posted the link and made it tiny and reposted it, and it still will not behave like a link... but it is on ammy...
I bought North of Supposed to Be by Marci Ferguson. I almost didn't because of her first name.. but it takes place on the coast of Maine, and also includes lots of local places ( as do most of the other books there ) and it was not the first one of a series. Also, no animals died in the writing of this book, and that sold me. lol
http://www.amazon.com/North-Supposed-Be-Marcia-Ferguson/dp/0985781009/ref=sr_1_1...
My sister bought one of the other books that interested me Dumping the Magic: A retired Cynic Revisits Spirituality and Healing by Connie Donaldson. http://www.amazon.com/Dumping-Magic-Retired-Revisits-Spirituality/dp/0983668205/... and it struck me that maybe one or two of my LT friends might want to have a look at that one. I paged through it a bit at dinner.. and it looks quite good. I was also drawn to Connie as a person...
So after walking around for a while and checking everything .. AND getting the bookmobile to renew my Beaver County library card,( yay!) we went to Tinitique for dinner. I had a chicken gyro with lettuce, tomato and that glorious cucumber sauce ! I told Debbie that half their menu is made of of precooked chicken strips ( it is, I think? ) but whatever. I didn't have to cook and it was fairly low cal, considering. I had a nice time and not a single anxiety attack!!

My house is chilly this morning and I'm loving it!
Hope you have a wondrous day :-)

Hi Mark, sorry that I have been neglecting you but I have been reading, and have less LT time. Glad you forgave me enough to visit :)
Cee, it was chilly here this morning, too.. I love cool mornings! I love cool days, too. All of these mid 60's days they promise us turn into mid 70's days, but soon enough they won't. I'm limiting my book budget these days, and the books were pretty pricy.. but I do have a few filed away for future purchase :)
Mamie! Football day for you! All I care about is that Michael Vick's team loses. Every. Game. As long as he plays. If I could wave a wand, that is one of the things I would fix. Whammy!
rd, it was nice :) I am ready to do it again! xo
Megan, they were all so lovely... It was so hard to choose.. I could have walked out with a wagon load of books, but no way.. so? I really want Tears of Deceit by Regis Schilllken. I want to give it to Adam..
I am reading and not doing much else .. I am planning spaghetti for dinner, ( clever me ) and some tv later. One of my vices is on, Long Island Medium.
Hope you are all enjoying your weekend!

HI Kath!
Hope you had a great weekend!
It's been getting chilly here at night as well. We left our windows open last night as it was warm-ish when we went to bed but the temp dropped quite a bit overnight and we woke up to a very chilly house! I think it's going down to about 8 tonight so all our windows are closed!
Hope you had a great weekend!

110mckait
Hello Joe! happy to see you, and I agree. Reading is a good excuse, since despite akk the other stuff, this is a book group.. lol I almost finished, but Cory called later and we talked for a long time. Seems that Ireland thinks he would be a great person to come an live there due to his skill set. He is giving it serious thought.
Mark.. I do have to find your thread... !
Chelle, it was good. I closed my windows last night as well. Not typical for me, I would usually rather wake up in the cool..but I guess I was feeling like staying warm last night :)
Terri... good to see you. You have been a busy bal! Not to mention a reading machine... I need to find you and catch up soon.
It was a good weekend. No nephlet sightings off of FB.. I am pariah for now. Poison oak, sick one day and I think mosquito bites ( I have about a zillion, I think what the heck?)are counting against me, too. Dunno when I will be considered safe again. Owen had a rash the other day, (lasted a few hours ) but they went into panic mode and decided I had given him poison sumac. I was on the phone with my friend and my sister called several times and then kept texting until I turned off my phone.
But I did spend a fair bit of time doing nothing much but reading. I am only pages away form finishing Moloka'i..which I have liked a lot. Then it will be last months LTER and then North of Supposed to be, I think?
First, Dan is leaving early for some reason, I dont know why. My job is just to feed him and make a lunch. I'm not sure what else I will do .. I have some tree limbs to cut up and he refuses to cut the limb I can't reach, so I guess I have to figure out how to reach it. So I may not read until lunch time.
Whatcha all doing?

Joe and Ellen, I am confident that you will like it.. I'm glad you will give it a try :) Oh Ellen, I may be a beat envious of that trip :)
Good morning Gail. I am wondering which 2, and think I might be able to guess :) I swear, I only went out for fresh rolls.. and then ran into organic chicken thighs on sale for .78 a pound. So I had to buy 4 packs for the freezer. I still have to rewrap and get them in there. And things sort of snowballed from there, since I have two new recipes I want to try that start with thighs.. so I found a lovely butternut squash, brown rice and some limes. I also wanted to make stuffed peppers which I remembered ( luckily) while I was out, so I got that stuff too. And some V-8 ( spicy) because I used what I had. I like it for soup and chili and will use it when I make my stuffed peppers instead of tomato sauce... it gives it a bit of zing. I always keep that and salsa in the house....But you're right.. nice to not have to plow and harvest unless we want to :)
I was interrupted in my putting away by two hang up calls from my niece who then didn't answer.. so I flew down the hill to check on them.. and stayed for 2 hours :P All was well. My phone was playing up. ( le sigh) But I am mostly done now.. just have to package the chicken and .. you know.. do the day. I think I will roast some cauliflower ....to go with the pulled pork. ( Dan doesn't like slaw, so I rarely make it) I haven't started a book yet, I hope to this afternoon, and It will be my LTER .
rd... I am working on figuring out exactly what you mean, but decided to consider it a good wish....and the same back at ya! :)

Hi Kath,
I didn't do so great today *heavy sigh*
See. The woman that is moving out of town... she did the publicity for the fire dept. Now that she is moving they begged me to take it over. I hemmed and hawed... they begged harder. I finally succumbed.
"No" never made it to my lips.
Oh, woe! I have learned nothing! I am still a wimp! :PPPP
Now what do I do? Suck it up, I guess. Waaaaaaah!
Hope your day was a goodie! At least I know you are not going hungry ;-)

Hi Kath - Yay! Moloka'i has another fan! I read it a few years ago and loved it. The island itself teases me from across the channel when we are on Maui - just a short 9 miles across the channel, I'll get there someday.
Brennert has another book, Honolulu, that was almost as good, about Japanese picture brides.

Good to see you Laura, I see from yr thread that you have been a little busy :)
Oh Cee.... That is so unfair of them to pressure you like that. I have to help you practice saying no.. I swear to you it is empowering.. a little awkward the first time.. but empowering. And you do not need excuses.. it is your life. NO, sorry :) is plenty. All of those people pushing you are also implying no.... they just got there first. I dunno.. I think that you can say, I have reconsidered.... if you want to. If you think it might be enjoyable for you... go ahead, but if you need to say, you don't want to.. say it. Or, give me their number :) I will tell them that I am your administrative assistant and that you are really overbooked for the rest of the decade and just can't do it ...
Joanne... I did see that. I have so far refrained from adding Honolulu to the tbr, but it may not stay that way.
Gail, I agree.. it is hard. Especially the first time. It gets easier each time :) At least, it idid for me.
I actually ran down again in the evening... Oliver was out with his grandpa and I was able to have total Owen immersion... although I didn't know that when I went down.. it was enjoyable!
Terri. It is too easy... but how do you pass up .78 lb on all natural chicken?
Well, today I am going to be making stuffed peppers. I love them. The pulled pork was really good yesterday. While I was tossing things into the crock pot in the morning I put in a good amount of spicy brown mustard. It was so good! I have to remember to do that again next time.

Hi Kath - How are things going. hope you are having a good day.
Nephlet time sounds like it was great.
Haven't signed into Talk Like a Pirate Day yet - maybe when I have finished catching up on the 75ers:)

Ahoy Kath!
Here's my problem. I really like the woman who asked me to do this. She is pretty damn busy with a full time job, head of the fire dept auxiliary, a first responder on the ambulance team - AND in her late 70s. How could I say "no"? It's getting hard now to find volunteers for anything.
I don't think this publicity thing is time consuming or hard... I just have to figure out what/how to do. (le sigh - as you would say)

Morning Kath - Just barely! What are you gonna do today?
147mckait
Yep.. Still morning... I am doing all sorts of little things today, and still hope to read. Had words with the Jehova's Witness who comes to see Dan. ( I always forget abou thim... ) I was busy in the kitchen and I hear Dunkers freaking out.. so I flew into the living room with soapy hands.. and there he is staning outside the screen door. I am usually nice to him, but I told him nicely that dan isn't here and he can leave his literature on the porch ( dunkers continues to go all cujo) I had water dripping all over me and suds..
he said you know jesus loves women.. let me read you this passage.. I said, look.. jesus certainly loves women, had a wife and I am sure he had a great life. I said I doubt Romney gives a damn about women.. ( no I don't know why.. I was getting annoyed. ) he said let me read to you about the coming end of the world... I said I am a pagan, I worship the goddess and my belief is that we are facing a conciousness shift, not an end.. don't be silly. Please excuse me and let me calm down my dog and finish the dishes.. thanks.. and closed the door. Not like me but jesus mary and joseph on a q tip... ARRRR!
sigh

That was polite of you, Kath, considering the appropriate response would have been to fling boiling sugar water on the hater.

I feel bad, I am usually nicer.. but cripe! I was dripping water all over and Dunkers and .. you know. Lost it. Poor old guy. He's about 100. There is some big, younger, blond guy who comes with, but he stays in the background.
150Crazymamie
It's his fault for not taking no for an answer, Kath.
151jolerie
It always frustrates me when they don't take no for an answer because then sometimes it just forces you to be rude when you don't want to be. I think the worst are the door sales people who say they AREN'T there to sell you anything, and yet they keep taking about their products for as long as you will let them. I just play the baby card now and say..oh sorry? Is that my child I hear crying upstairs and then politely close the door...

I am so hungry from smelling stuffed peppers cooking most of the day :P I got a lot done, though. laundry and doing some switching out of this and that in the upstairs, and my room. I really want to read ... I will give it another try....

Still moseying with Lucia, and doing some poetry reading as well...energy level low, but I think, think mark you, that I might be able to work in a dr.s appt. for myself next Tuesday. Maybe.
Hope your evening is peaceful and full of reading.

I know. But he is going to one farther away than he has to and I would be happier if he were going to the ER at the closest hospital. Amy called back. She said the same thing. Have I mentioned that waiting is not my best thing?

Let me tell ya from recent experience... unless you come in on a stretcher, sometimes waiting in the ER is excrutiatingly looooong. He might be getting quicker and better attention at urgent care.

I'm also withe Cee on this one that the urgent care is probably the better way to go then the hospital if you want to be seen quicker. This coming from the wife of only 3 months when her hubby was sitting in the hospital all the live long night with intense chest pains, only to find out that he had a freaking blood clot in his lungs! Anyways, thank goodness the on call doctors checked out out thoroughly instead of just giving him pain meds and wished him on his merry way...

So... they told Cory he has shingles ( ?) and said they were giving him a prescription for preds, and valtrex.
He dropped it off .. went home.. then went back out to pick it up. When he got home he had oxycodone. Nothing else. I told him to make sure it was for him, and that they hadn't given him a wrong Rx. ( which happened once before, here.) He said he was going to sleep. He has another Doctors appt this afternoon, he does not think it's shingles due to other symptoms he is having.. It was a long night.
Of course I am up early, as usual... waiting to see if Rocky is going to drop off topsoil...he didn't answer when Dan checked in last night. So.. it's a waiting game. I don't know if I want him to show up or not show up..lack of sleep apparently makes me ambivalent about everything :P
My LTER is awful. The Memory Thief by Emily Colin.. I thought it would be better. Man dies, different man wakes after accident with his memories. That is a background to an annoying romance. Boo. I need to start revisiting the list at the end of the month... review forthcoming. I have about 45 minutes of reading left.
rd, hope you feel better today...
Valerie.. yeah.. I get that..but my feeling is that if it were a gall bladder attack or appendix ( which is what I thought it could be, given his symptoms) the ER was better. Whatever. Today we should get a better idea of what's what. He may need to find a better pharmacy.

Hi Terri... I know.. I was counting on the dead guy in different body story... but its a lot of "I have always loved you... lets lock the door" blah!
The Rx screw up.. it happens more often than I like to think about. I'm sure he will be okay.. but I am really looking forward to the appt this afternoon to get a second opinion and get meds sorted out..Not to mention finding out if Dunkers and I need to go down there. Amy and Tom are on their way to Charlotte to visit friends... timing is everything.

Shingles is pretty darn awful, although it varies in severity. My much better half had a bad case of it a couple of years ago and had a miserable time of it. An older male neighbor had it a few years ago and couldn't bear to wear a shirt for a couple of weeks. (Luckily he was retired!)

Hi Gail! Well the Rx story is this.. There were 2 Rx's. He dropped them off. He went to pick them up. He was given one.. the oxycodone. They didn't give him the others, he assumed it was all in the same bag.. etc. So.. thankfully, at least it was meant for him. I once picked up an RX for some abx for him ( years ago) and he took one then came to me and said his heart was pounding.. it turns out it was a heart med for someone else.. ( I hadn't checked.. panic!!!) Clearly, he recovered. I agree with the eternity thing. I have had past life reading that back it up!((((((Gail))))))) I really needed that hug today.. I am very grumpy.
rd and Joe.. well... I suggested that he not take the Valtrex until he sees this other doctor this afternoon. I told him to go ahead with the pred, figuring it would help the rash ( which I didn't know he had until late last night) but to get his 2nd opinion first. I will tell him that my friends here send their ow ow ow sympathy for him :)
106. The Memory Thief: A Novel by Emily Colin 2.5 stars LTER read and reviewed.
Perhaps I should refrain from review writing when I am grumpy.

Hmmm.
See, I was thinking if he had appendicitis the urgent care would call an ambulance for him. You get a room & dr much quicker if you come in on a stretcher than if you walk into the ER.
Well - thank goodness. It seems not to be a critical life-threatening emergency.
And Kath, I know you are very worried and want to be there to help him. I would feel the same. It's hard to wait to see what's up... Cory sounds like he has good sense and will call you.

hmm I guess there is that, Cee. I wasn't thinking about it. I am still stressing because he is convinced it isn't shingles, had an appt at 2:30 that he was going to, and I haven't heard from him yet. I think this either means that he is feeling better and not in any hurry to call me to tell me he is okay.. or that something horrible is going on. You know me.. I am tipped heavily into horrible :(

Yeah, Valtrex would do a non-virally-loaded person No Good At All. Blurgh though. Oxycodone is such a damned useless drug. Works for 5min then nothing.

I had shingles too, Kath, but at about age 50 or so. Excessively painful, but treated immediately with a very heavy dose of valtrex, left no after effects. He's young to have them. Tell him how sorry I am and that I hope he can get some rest and heal soon.

Ohh sorry about the shingles that Cory has. I recall my dad having shingles when he was in his 40's. I think it was painful, but he did really quite well. My grandma got them in her 80's and while she recovered from them, she needed help in the house after that. I think it is best to have shingles when you are on the younger side.
By the way - really enjoying The Midwife Of Hope River: A Novel . It was one of those books I just looked at in the bookstore and thought - yeah - I think I will enjoy this - and I really am! I did notice on the main page that you had enjoyed the book too, and got it as advance copy. I'm sure that my mom will enjoy it too. Hi Gail.. I'm happy to hear that you had no after effects. I am a little surprised that he has them at his age, ( 35) and hope they just GO AWAY! And soon. He has a presentation to do today, but he said that's it, so he can hop on a train, do it, and go home. He may take a day or few off next week.
Deb, I'm so glad you are enjoying Hope River.. I really liked it and will be on the lookout for more by the author. She is someone I think I would like knowing.... Her other book Arms Wide Open was good, too. Especially if you are a child of the 60's? But really it has potential for many to enjoy it.
So, what should I do with this butternut squash?

I usually boil it and mash it with a small ton of butter, salt, and pepper. But it also makes a terrific soup. Butternut is my very favorite squash. Well, no, really Hubbard is my fav., but you need an axe to cut it up.

Yeah, I thought of soup. That was actually my intention when I bought it.. but, then I thought....no.
So, I cubed it, tossed with with some olive oil salt and my home made chili seasoning... roasted it. It was good. (ish)
Gail.. I am not a huge fan of squash. I too, favor it with butter etc.. but I was trying to avoid butter...which frankly I could probably eat with a spoon, or at the very least heap on good bread ..toasted of course. Zucchini .. I like breaded and fried :) le sigh.
rd.... that's what I do with Acorn squash.. so I thought about that...
Cee, how do you know, I might have loved it!
Valerie.. I think the same about Cory. Do you think your husband would do the same for me? rd used to play that role .. I think he got tired of me.
Well, I just had fun with a pile of dirt and a wheelbarrow :) But wuss that I am one hour of fun was all I could take. That was after cooking and having fun buying toys for the nephlets. I am quite pleased with what I have so far.. one more thing for Owen and I am done. It's hard to find anything that they don't already have in the house....from Oliver. Unfortunately, sharing is not Oliver's strong suit. So.. I am awaiting mommy approval on a list of things..
75 out there today. I hate doing outside work after 9 am, but there was no help for it, I had to wait for Dan to leave. Sharing is not his strong suit either, and I needed to sort of do it behind his back. wheeeeee!

Tired of *you*? One who is tired of Kath is tired of Life, to paraphrase the Great Doctor.
I'm just too miserable to do much, I fear. Left shoulder's in bad shape so I can't talk on the phone for more than a minute or two...can't drive unless it's *urgent* (liberry, dog supplies)...oh woe is me woe yeccchhh I hate complaining!
Except about politics. And religion. Like Appleism.

My husband often says he doesn't understand how some men can have more than 1 wife/or extra lady on the side. One crazy is enough for him... I wholeheartedly agree with his statement. ;)
I tell him to let me know if I'm going to nuts, but it would help IF I actually listened to him... :/

yeah... unfortunately there is no "off" button.. as I try to explain to my kids. If I could "not worry" I would "not worry".
200jolerie
Yeah, I say that to myself all the time...
But, over the last couple of years, one thing I've "tried" to do is to stand back and think, is my worrying constructive in making the situation better? Or am I just stressing the people I care about? If the former ends up veering into the gutter and becoming the latter, I try to go do something else productive with myself. All being said, of course it's easier to say than do. More often then not, I'm sitting up in the middle of the night, because I can't turn it off...but I'm getting better....slowly.....
ETA: From one worry-wort to another, *HUGS*. :)

Easy way to do butternut squash....without peeling! Scoop out the cooked part, and make soup, if that's what you want to fix. My dad grew squash..a lot of it...and this was my go-to way to fix it:

Hey Kath, had to stop and say hi! Glad you enjoyed the Bookfest. I really need to plan for that next year. It's probably a two hour drive from here. Easily doable, just have to make the time for it. Hope you have a nice weekend. Our trees are looking pretty awesome lately, yours?
208mckait
Hi Lynda! Wow, a meetup at the bookfest would be wonderful :)
Not much tree action here.. one or two red leaves in the yard... I keep watching :) This is my favorite time of the year!

Kath, I just LOVED The Midwife Of Hope River: A Novel . No review or anything as yet but what a fabulous book! Squash - what to do.... I never eat squash so I have not idea..........slinks away...........;)

North of Supposed to Be by Marcia Ferguson is the book I picked up at the bookfest.. I started it this morning. I was going to read The Key, but decided to save it for October as it is probably going to be more Octobery, than North of Supposed to Be will be :)
Deb... I hear ya! I do eat it, but it is not at the top of my list. Did I say? I made it tossed in olive oil with salt, pepper and chili seasoning that I put together from a recipe on Pinterest.. the chili powder that is.. it was okay... still not a fave. eta Oh and so glad that you liked Hope River :)

Godd mornin', Sweet One.
Somehow Rdear managed to let slip a few germs and both Dh and myself are down with wicked, nasty, aching head colds.
And my coffee pot broke, but I have a new one on order from ammy, should be here Tuesday. If I put the water in the night before, as I always have, it leaks out all over the counter, leaving me with about 1/4 cup of nasty stuff pretending to be coffee. I can still make a pot if I put the water in and brew immediately. Crossing my fingers that it lasts until the new one arrives...
A good week-end to you, Dearie.

Hello there, sweet Gail! BOOOO on the coffee pot! That is no kinda good ! I hope it holds out, too... good grief, these brewers do brew up a lot of trouble when they go... We depend on them! Silly things... I am sorry to hear that you got hit with colds. I hope they pass quickly and that you are feeling well Very soon. Weekend for me will include reading, and maybe some music, if I decide to leave the house. (doubtful)
RD awwwww how sweet, smooch back at ya!
Mamie... Zanafest is today, it is a tribute to a music teacher that my kids were lucky enough to have ....
( at least a couple of them ) and I have been invited. I may go.... or not. Otherwise, laundry and books on my to do list :)

Mornin', Kath. Ran to the store as we ran short of milk yet again; got ice cream and fruit as well.
Still have the cold, but it's livable; Dh, on the other hand, is flat on his back, absolutely knocked out. Taking a shower was all he could manage for today...
Reading, sort of The Small House at Allington and a book of very funny mystery short stories I picked up somewhere among the "unloved, unwanted, please take me home" stacks at the Senior Center.
Beautiful day today though.

Okay, so I have never cooked squash, but I would dearly love to - need to get on that. In the meantime, big batch of chili for today, and a roast with veggies for tomorrow.
Kath, what are you up to today? Something fun, I hope. Also sending a next book better*whammy* - you know what that means? You've received the double whammy!!

Kim, really! 17? that's young... I am hoping his youth helps them to go away quickly, too!
Squash.. sigh. I would rather eat potatoes.
Mamie. No... if you do not need to eat squash, my advice is don't. Well.. at least not very often. Now buttery mashed potatoes .. that is another thing entirely.

OK. I will share my EASY squash recipe. But you must keep it a secret.
1) Get hubby to peel, chunk, and place butternut squash in pot with water.
2) Boil til tender.
3) Drain and mash.
4) Add butter (chunk) and brown sugar (a couple spoonfuls) to taste.
You might have a little difficulty with step #1, Kath.

Hahaha, awesome review. And there's more...and more..and more! That's one case of false advertisement when the cover is so tempting, but the book itself is a train wreck. I'm hoping your next read has less, well, of everything. :)

Megan... always... I always give an honest opinion .. This one had lobster boats/fishing ( barely) but that sucks me in... so I have only myself to blame.
Joanne, I am thinking self published? It's beautifully done, but ? I never count that against a book. There are some darn good writers out there who go that route, or to e-books, which is same same same. But...I'm afraid this woman had more money than talent.
Valerie, thanks.. :P I won't putit up anywhere but here. I feel a little bad not warning people off... but I would also feel bad saying those things elsewhere. I don't think many people will even look at the review here, as it isn't a popular book, and won't pop up in recs or anything. Just us.. the cozy 75ers.
I have already started a pot roast, so I can cook it slowly... and have to make a run out for Dunkers chicken.
nothing much happening so far.. I will pop into a few threads before my errands...

Cory called. He sounds like he is at deaths door :( I had told him to call the dr today, he didn't.
His symptoms sound like either a virus ( which, yes, I know shingles is ) or a reaction to the valtrex, which I looked up online.
thoughts?

I am of course, worried :(

Hmm... I guess I'm not invited to your breakfast party ... I don't like cereal ...all kinds of cereal ..... oh wait, I will eat those rice crispies but only if they're not soggy with milk and if there's no sugar, fruit or nuts added. I like the crunch and I like how they bite my tongue. :-)
261richardderus
I just dislike marshmallows in all ways, shapes, forms, and fashions. *shudder* I like corn flakes. And Rice Chex.
Valtrex reaction is possible, but improbable, as Cory is an otherwise healthy 33yr old. He's probably got a cold. His immune system's working overtime on the shingles and thus paying little attention to rhinovirus.
Poor guy. He needs his mommy. Soup and books and help to the bafroom. Man, I wish I'd had a mommy like that!

Mamie, there are always solutions if we work together :)
Caro.. I love cereal.. Special K, Rice Krispies, All the Chex Cereals and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I love all things cinnamon. I do not like cinnamon Life as it gets very soggy and nasty very fast.
RD .. wait, what? You like corn flakes? Made from the dreaded corn? I just got off the phone with him. He sounds better. I do think he wants his mommy, and has offered to pay for a ticket. My sister is going away and I have no one to take care of Duncan. We are in negotiations.. I think Cory will be fine, and wants pampered. I am willing, but it is hard to just go when you have a dog and a husband with a schedule like Dan's that might change at any time. So.... I just don't know what is going to happen.
Terri.. thanks :) On both counts..
Megan.. they aren't the same as regular marshmallows.. they are sort of crispy ....
Terri.. that is what I would think.. like Lucky Charms..
Mamie.. as much as the above mentioned cereals are my favorites ( I have always loved Special K and have not yet gotten over the fact that they turned them form little cups to flakes about 30 years ago ....) I do love Lucky Charms :) once in a while.
I am off to make the meatballs in case I have to get on a plane this afternoon.

Kath, high time I paid a visit - your thread moves so fast I usually can't keep up. I enjoyed your wonderful review of a truly terrible sounding book - they can be the best fun to write sometimes, when all you can do is make fun of how bad it is.

Love to Cory, pats and pampering...
He's in one of those times when we realize just how much it stinks to be an adult...hateful.
We're having mac and cheese today. I think. Homemade.

Poor Cory ...I've never had shingles, but I hear it's incredibly painful. {{gentle hugs}} .. hope he feels better soon.
oooh...mac and cheese ..... i could do with some comfort food today ... I'm craving crab cakes, chicken noodle soup and mac & cheese. I must be getting better if I'm thinking of food.

Kath - just catching up after some down time due to infected eyes. Sorry to see your son is having some health issues and is away from you. I feel the same impotence in reverse with my mum ill and so far away. Hang on in there. x

Oh Linda... thank you
Geez, Gail... All this kindness brought tears to my eyes...
Paul, I had no idea... I am so sorry about the eye thing. Dreadful! Feel better :)
hugs to all of you and to all of my friends here..

Sorry - been busy lately. Here I am.
Poor Cory! and Poor Mom!
Glad your boy is sounding better - now let him sleep or relax or whatever he is doing. He'll be fine... he will. I know it's hard for you :(
Truthfully, I never realized so many young people got shingles. I'm doubting this fits in well with a young - on the go - lifestyle.
Hope it is short-lived.
Hang in there, my friend.

Glad to hear Cory's feeling better! I hate to think of a child (no matter how old!) away from home and sick. :(
a bag of cereal marshmallows? *shudder* Cheerios with fresh peaches, raspberries or blueberries (or just a banana) is my cereal of choice.

OH good to see you, Cee... a day without CeeShine is not fun. Whatcha up to?
It is hard to not be there for him. He sounded better yesterday, much better. The oxycodone didn't agree with him.( I can't take anything like that either ) I told him to take ibuprofen instead. The first doctor told him that ibuprofen was bad. WEll, that made no sense, I checked the internet.. then checked with my pharmacist, who called to check with someone... and she said she was puzzled too. So I had him call doctor #2 who said... um.. dunno.. go ahead and take ibuprofen. Which helped, once the oxycodone out of his system. I am less worried.
Cheerios... I forgot about those, Joanne, I like Cheerios, too. I haven't eaten much cereal lately... weird thing about Cheerios is I rarely eat them as cereal, more likely to take a handful to snack on.
Hi Mark, thanks :) Hope all is well with you.
So far.. nothing going on here.. reading a kindle freebie, that is a decent little murder mystery. Lightweight and fun. I'm trying to save The Key for October, and have to find a short stack of spookys for my favorite month.
The Xmas gifts and birthday gifts for the nephlets have arrived . They are fabulous! I am hoping to see the boys today... we shall see.
So... I am wondering. Most of us ( I think most) have read the Harry Potter books. Is anyone planning on reading J K Rowling's new book for adults?

You're welcome!
Yesterday was good, Kath. Got lots done at home, then headed out with my son for some clothes shopping (for him) and Chinese food.
Today, as part of his school's Spirit Week (Homecoming) the kids were to dress as teachers & teachers to dress like students. You should have seen my boy this morning, heading out all dressed up with a necktie! Spiffy!
Unfortunately, he's outgrown his rarely-worn dress shoes; his sneakers don't quite match the outfit . . . :(

But the sneakers will make him look beautifully Steve Jobs-ish! I am a fan of sneakers with dress clothes... but I do understand that I am the minority in this ( and many other things)

Morning Kath! Sorry to hear about Cory - Craig can't take oxycodone either. Glad to hear he is doing better now that it is out of his system.
Love Cheerios - dry or with milk. I only like Life cereal dry, though - gets too soggy too fast with milk.
Cannot believe you have Christmas and birthdays for the nephlets done already - that is so great! And I hope that you get to see them today.
And I am planning to read J. K. Rowling's new book.
Feels like Friday to me - not sure why. It's pouring here, so I'm glad that I only have to run one errand today - to pick up Biscotti's pain meds. Hope you have a good one!

wow... that was a great speedy catchup! I agree Life cereal dry is good...
Christmas opportunity popped up and I latched on and then kept going. Their birthdays are so close to Christmas... It's just easier. Also, if I get in early, I can have more choice with gifts... because there is a lot of family. ( Shame on me )
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on JK's book..I am waiting...
Yay for only one errand...

Not shame on you - way to go, girl!!! Good thinking! Abby's birthday is in February and when she was little, we always bought her birthday gifts when we bought her Christmas gifts because the stores would not be restocked by her big day - so, if we knew she wanted something specific, we picked it up early to make sure we had it.

Boo hiss on the rotten Kath! A terrible person full of meanness and horripilation!
(Had to counteract all that smoochfest going on above. Good morning sweetness.)

:) Thanks Mamie :) and good on you... I have 3 Dec. birthdays, my Cory and Kimmy & now Keith.. but that is no longer a worry with them being adults.I used to do the same, shop early. And now 2 Jan birthdays.. not to mention adult birthdays in Jan. Amy is in November... whew! Anyway, I am glad I am done with the nephlets. They are each getting two books, too .
smooch back atcha rd... I know that's what you meant :) LOL
Whew.. I went out to pull a few weeds and spent over an hour doing battle with rose bushes and Morning glories gone wild. Filled two trash cans .. and cut up some branches the wind is blowing out of my tree now and then. Little ones... Then I showered as I was deat certain that there were spiders on me. GAK

I'm going to have to take the rest of the day off and relax, Kath, as your working so hard has completely exhausted me!

Hi Kath!
I'm sure no one cares (and why should they?) but I wanna say what I like for cereal ;-)
I love store brand Oats and Honey granola, topped with lots of wheat germ, nuts and frozen berries - with milk. I can't even imagine how many calories that is and I really don't care! YUM!
Other than that, not high on cereal at all.
Bridget acquired a stress fracture in her foot yesterday as she was running :(
She now has to wear a boot and cancel 4 marathons this fall. It'll take her 5-6 weeks to heal. She'll be out of running shape by then. So she's done for the year. Apparently it is quite painful and she can't put any weight on it. Poor baby. It's not gonna look too good when her patients come in for PT and she is obviously injured! Kids!
Gotta do a bunch of GHS stuff today. The TIDE will be going out soon. That was a quick 2 months! oy

I care what kind of cereal you like. I think that sounds yummy and nutritious. I am getting hungry for cereal. ! like oatmeal, too.. with brown sugar .. yummy. Or with Simply fruit ...
Poor Bridget :( I hope she doesn't have too much pain for long... and I have seen plenty of injured PT's so.. not to worry :) I think marathons are insanity. Amy is doing a half sometime soon. Her ankle won't let her do more than that ( Dare I say thank the goddess?)
Tide.. time flies when you're busy and they same about when you're having fun. Not sure about the fun thing ... but it sure does when busy :)

To a spider-less Kath day.
How long does it take for oxycodone to leave the body? Would Calamine lotion help topically?

No idea about the calamine... and I have no idea about the oxycodone, but it seemed to be about a day and a half or two days for him. I will talk to him again in a bit... he is doing fine. Feeling crummy, but sounds much better, and he ordered Chinese yesterday, so? He will be fine.

Afternoon, Dearie!
A. On the cereal survey: I like Fiber One Honey Clusters, as that's almost the only cereal that holds up in milk long enough for me to eat it. Love all sorts of fruit, bananas, any sort of berry, peaches, nectarines with it. I must eat that five or six times a week, sometimes for lunch or dinner. The nuts do add a yummy crunch and taste, but I don't use them much. I can't abide any sort of warm cereal, be it oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, whatever.
B. No spiders are allowed near you today or tomorrow. Hideous wolf spiders live here, who give live birth and sort of die, so when you smash the blasted comatose beast, thousands of eensy-weensy terrors go scurrying madly across the garage floor. I about plotzed the first time I first observed this odd phenomenon.
C. Excellent advice on using ibuprofin or any NSAID as long as he doesn't have bleeding issues. It will keep the pain down, without the unpleasant side effects. Sooooo glad that he's doing better. Wouldn't recommend calamine lotion, but Abreva might possibly give relief. There's also a scrip. Valtrex cream that's much more effective. Abreva is so expensive that it might not even be worth trying.
D. I'm looking forward to doing some yard work tomorrow...no dr. appts. for once.
And-uh...weather's beautiful, I have a worthless but harmless book to read for R.L book club--it should take about 3-4 hours, total. Then I'm passing it on to a friend in the group.
Life is so short. An eye-blink.
xo
