Afternoon, Kath. I'm here for the long haul...
Again beautiful in Gail Land. Was inspired to pick up some daffodil bulbs and crocus bulbs this afternoon, while looking for something else, naturally.
Daughter called and will arrive tomorrow, but will arrive earlier in the day and stay a day longer at the end to make up for it. She was on the road, but dog-tired. I'm fine with that, as long as she gets here. Yippee!

The Samhain image is esp. lovely. It would seem the Uni is ready for me the make my transition: I got, as my one piece of mail today, a flyer for a cemetery advertising how lovely their grounds are (and they are indeed) and offering "pre-need" savings. Addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Richard Derus."
Snort.

Paul... Distractions abound.. probably going to follow Caro's advice.
Gail :) Drat! But tomorrow is good, too. Especially as it won't shorten the visit, just delay it a little bit. Tired travel scares me so this is better. My kids .. my sons.. are all about to hit the road to travel, but sadly, none of them headed for home. :( but soon, I hope!
rd.. hmm... they must not have gotten the word that you have prearrangements of your own. That was just a tease, the universe isn't ready for you.. I'm pretty sure. Glad you like the image.. I looked for just the right thing, and that seemed to be it :)
Dan is of today, instead of thursday. So he is off tomorrow too. WE might ( omigod) go to some outlets somewhere. Not Grove City.. some others.. whatever.. but ..
Thank you all for staking a spot in my new thread :)

Hi kath,
Happy new thread to you and your visitors. No wonder there's no pumpkins at the vege shop lately, its well out of season here, you remind me of course with your header pictures. Oh, well, we've got plenty of asparagus to have instead.
Take care

genny, *Cheers!* and thank you for the morning pick me up :)
Thanks :) Caro. No. Nada. grrr part of the problem is that I want a nice spooky read.. and can't find quite what I want. I have however ... found a few more books for the book sale, if I get them there in time.
Hi Lynda!glad you like it :)
Well, not sure how the day will be... supposed to go off to some outlets. With Dan. He wants some new Crocs and is determined to go there.
I wonder if there's a book store? lol
This is NOT something I look forward to. I am not a fan of shopping. And I have no shopping knacks...

Kath, I hope the Crocs shopping is less awful than you predict, if that's what you end up doing today.
Outlets... maybe a used bookstore?
I don't mind a bit of aimless shopping now and then, but the kind of excursion you're describing sounds like a chore. Of course, I can spend hours in a good bookstore. And I buy most of my clothes on line from reliable (read: predictable) sources.
I hope your Wednesday turns out to be a good one. And that you choose a good book for your next read.

I'm not a huge shopper either. I go in knowing what I want and then I get it or I don't. I don't like to linger. The only except - a bookstore. :) Hope you find what you are looking for and fast as well. :)
28mckait
Lynda. I have been dreading it for weeks. :P Turns out it wasn't so bad.
Ellen, not a bookstore in the place that I saw... I usually shop online, too. Shoes are tough though. But these shoes should help :) I will order them from now until they quit making them! I got taupe and grey..
Valerie... sometimes ya just gotta do it.
rd.. it was actually not so bad. We got a parking place right behind Old Navy. We bought the 25% off coupons and got a free coupon bok at the service center that was right there. Every store I wanted to hit was on the same strip. All the fancy and yuppie sort of stores were off on different offshoots to either side...
The sales were super and I used my Amazon card so I could get the points..
I found sneakers that actually fit. Buy two pair get one free. So I bought two and got a different type free.
And they let me use a coupon to get 25% off one pr of shoes.. so 3 Easy Spirit shoes for me about 100$ This is huge, because I have a bone spur on top of one foot and these shoes work for me. I am pleased. The two pair feel so good, and feel like gloves for my feet. The free pair is a sturdier pair.that woven material that I like.
Dan got Crocs, buy one get one 50% off plus 20% off coupon, Timberland work boots.139$ on sale for 84$ plus 25% off coupon so 60$ or something. FAB. One pair is regular crocs and one pair is loafers, nice cloth ones.
Dan got all sorts of other things from Under Armour, including a Wounded Warrior jacket,
I got a sweat pants at Old Navy. I got Oliver a Skull Tee shirt that changes color when you wear it and Owen a fleece skull hat and mittens.
Some Xmas shopping.. did I say that?
Then we went to Waffle House.. and a few other regular errands and home.
I hurt from top of my head to my toes... it was damp and rainy.... but even though the stores are separate, they are covered. We didn't get wet, but the damp ..ouchies. We walked for 2.5 hours... pretty much. So
all is just fine and dandy. I am going to make finger food ( bad stuff) for dinner... and relax. Ouch.

Sounds like you had a successful shopping trip!
Kath, I wanted you to know, you've inspired me by deciding to take a workshop. Nothing on that subject here, but I've signed up for an evening called "Girl's Night Out -- Bourbon Street" where I'm going to learn all about Cajun cooking and culture. It's a joint effort of a local restaurant and the area's Community College. And, unlike you, I don't even have to navigate a long drive to get there -- it's within walking distance. It's been ages since I've done anything like this. (The history nights at the library don't count, as I work there, so it's really not out of my comfort zone.)

Terri... Good for you! And that sounds really wonderful! I hope that you enjoy it. Further, I hope you share what you learn :) I love Cajun food. OH the Cajun Queen in Charlotte is like heaven! No, I've never been to New Orleans... so that's the closest I've gotten. That and the guy who no longer comes to Farmers Market.
It is NOT easy to leave our comfort zones is it?( ((Terri)))
Well, since getting home, I'v burned my right hand, fingers and thumb ( don't ask.. Oven 450 ) Then of course had to wash dishes ( ouch) and do the litter and today's trash. I am just now really getting to sit down. I went to put my shoes away, and ended up doing the going through the shoes thing..... some almost new to give away and a couple pair to toss.. then vacuuming my room and blah blah. yeesh.
But I am going to sit down and watch tv or something. I am beat!

Srsly, Kath. Your room couldn't wait til tomorrow to be vacuumed?
You are certifiably NUTS! *sigh*
Sounds like a successful day and no guilt about missing your bike riding in the dark, spooky cellar. You did so much running around, I'd say you could even take tomorrow off :)
You have a Waffle House???? Luckieeee! I love that place!
We don't have them up here and we won't be driving to FL anymore so I don't know if I will ever see one again :(

Cee.. you know how it is.. you go to get a glass of water and see a jacket on the back of a chair. So you hang it up, and then you notices something on the floor in the bathroom, realize it's a shred of tp from the kitty .. but while you are bent over you notice that there is some pet hair in the corner.. so you get a tissue and make sure you swipe it all up and thin.... hmmm the gub looks dull and soapy.. and so .....It was like that. That happens to me all the time. I am going to get some risers for my bed, too... that is what I decided while I was down there.... lol. This waffle house is about 40 minutes away.. it was fine... no pancakes.. but a waffle almost made it. I would switch it out for a Popeye's Chicken any day of the week.
I have a lot of shoes now, calm... lol. It really was productive and helpful. It was enjoyable as far as shopping goes. Dan just basically cooperative and actually had an opinion when it came to choosing his stuff. That was very helpful (unusual. )
Today, I am attacking the storage room again, and checking for sweaters and so on to clear out. Then just a bit of tidying and laundry. Dan is leaving early today, and once he is out of here it won't take me very long. So.. unless I get in a visit to the nephlets ( I didn't get to see Owen yesterday, he was napping) I will be home. all day. YAY

Hurrah for getting shoes that fit, and several pairs of them! I hate clothes and shoe shopping, because it is so hard to find things I like that actually fit me - so it makes sense to stock up when you do find something that works for you.
Enjoy your day at home today!

I just hate clothes and shoes needing to be shopped for. Shouldn't my measurements be taken via some laser measurement thingie in the bathroom and perfectly fitting clothes and shoes then materialize in my closets free of charge? Isn't that what the instruction manual said was gonna happen?
38jolerie
I prefer shoe shopping over clothes shopping.
Shoes I can slip on and off, hassle free.
Clothes, is another thing.
That is probably why I have boxes and boxes of just shoes in my garage. Probably should go through them and pack them off to goodwill if I don't plan on wearing them anytime soon....
Morning Kath!! :)

Valerie, I miss the days when you could get help shopping. You know, shoe stores where they measured your foot and the knowledgeable shoe person would know what shoes ran small or narrow or wide.... and would go and get them for you. Now.. you walk into the shoe store and there are shelves and shelves of shoes and the display color is never available, and by the time you track down a few pairs of shoes in your size to try on, you need a nap because the stores is nearly the size of Lowe's, and you have no idea what size you actually wear these days... Shoes are like jeans... randomly sized according to how they are cut.
rd.. I am frequently found wearing clothes that are much too big. I would be very much in favor of tha laser measurement thingie. I am currently culling clothing. It's ridiculous... I have things that I never wear. Not so much because I buy clothes for no reason, but because of changing sizes. I don't care about styles... I like what I like. I need to have a manageable amount of clothing. my goal is to have all summer and winter clothing stored in my bedroom, and not have to swap them out and store them. I am almost there. Not quite, but almost. One more season should be all I need... so by spring? Maybe.

Pets are gone :(
The house is quiet.
Went to see Mom to say goodby for vacation and she wanted to know how our vacation was. Had to tell her once again we have not left yet :(
About to throw 2 super thick tenderloins on the grill for our anniversary dinner with lots of wine :)
Then - I'll be three sheets to the wind and trying to pack LOL
Early tomorrow we are having breakfast at the Starlight Cafe (awesome underground place) and off we go! Now I'm getting downright giddy!

Kath, I remember those shoe stores where you really got service. Those were the days! As for clothes, I think we are a bit alike. I was just thinking, as I threw a huge sweater over a pair of sweat pants to head to my meeting this afternoon, that I have no idea what is "in style" and what isn't. I also have a closet bulging with things of various sizes . . . surely I'll diet down to where I can fit into "this" or "that" . . . and I do like things on the large size. Comfort trumps style for me almost always these days.
And I also hate the seasonal "swap out" of clothes. This summer, the winter things never got beyond sitting in a bag at the foot of the attic stairs. And I can't put the summer things away until after we visit the in-laws in Florida. We just ordered a second storage bench for our bedroom. (The first one was for linens.) With that and some weeding, I think I can keep everthing close by all year . . . not in the bedroom, there's only a cubbyhole closet, but there's a big closet in an alcove in the hall.

Megan.. I probably wouldn't miss the service so much if I was a better shopper myself.
Cee... Safe travels!
Valeries... But, Valerie, if not you, who? Kara hasn't posted ...Megan didn't speak up... who could it be?
I love watching Owen make strides.. It was only a few weeks ago that he had the idea of grab and stuff then the grabbing wasn't going so well.. then that got better and the stuffing didn't work so well, they landed on his chin. Now he's a pro...I could snuggle him for hours... his idea these days is just a couple of minutes... he has to get busy :P
Terri.. yeah.. that about sums me up.. we do have some things in common ! I rarely have a sweater that is not big and saggy. I get called out on it all the time by my sister and my daughter.. Whatever... I like what I like. Here's wishing us both success in our quests!
Nothing so far this morning. My Craig is headed for Ireland today. He is going alone and has some bug about he won't commit to posting anything at any time for any one. I have a feeling Sonia is to blame for his pique ( tantrum). This is due to some feelings I have had for weeks. I hope I'm wrong. The last time he acted this way he was 18 and wanted a black leather biker jacket.Which I did buy him at Wilson's.. and I hated it. But when he thought he wasn't getting it because I said I hated them he pouted. Went on about he's 18 and can decide what to wear. Yeah.. same thing. VERY unusual for him. But I will worry .. of course.
Bah! And about the time he gets home, Cory goes to Vegas, and Adam is talking about Chicago. Amy has a half marathon on saturday. Sheesh!
Errands this morning (Wah) and I am really not in the mood. Nothing else much so far. I am reading a YA that is pretty cute and may just get me out of my mini funk. I finished my bike book this morning. I will need another book this afternoon.sigh.

Heh, I remember Waffle Houses from my days growing up in the south. I think my family ate in one no more than once, but I suspect I could find something on the menu to tempt me..... :-)
I envy Craig his trip to Ireland and I hope you have a great Friday, Kath.

I envy Craig his trip to Ireland, too. I asked to go with and he said no.... he wants to go on his own.
I told him that I would just go to whatever towns he wanted to and amuse myself there... but still.. no. :(
I don't know how I would figure it out anyway, but it was a nice thought :)
I went to do errands... gas and groceries etc.. Heavy. Heavy stuff. Cat litter is heavy. my back says ouch.

I know what you mean about the cuddles time. I missed the days where he would just lie on top of me and not move....now if I can get him to sit still for 2 seconds, I count that as an accomplishment. :)
But the sweet thing now that they can move is when they actually CHOOSE to go up to give you a hug. My guy will do that randomly and then off he goes to demolish his toys again. :)
I do hope you figure out where your current YA read came from.
Pleasant Friday to you, Kath!

I had the most stupendously wonderful, happy terrific and fabulous day.
Workshop.... Good... Very good, soft....happy. Mary came, with my grandmother.. and my Uncle Eddie...
details to come.
My friend Mary's cousin called me when I was on my way... !!! I haven't seen Kathy since ...'68 or so . She found me on facebook and we have been in touch. I knew that she was due into town sometime soon.. not sure when. She called me and asked me to come to a family gathering ....because I was family :) and I went! All by myself, to a house I had never been to before and the house was full ..bulging at the seams... with family I had never met... and I had the bestest fabulesest goodest day. McCulloughs are loving, wonderful people and I love them. I felt like I was with family, in the purist sense of the word.
Hi Gail!!! I've been missing you ... but hoping that you are having good times with your daughter :)
rd.. Dickens said no worries, he will be there when it's your time to go... he has been assigned to you. along with a few of your friends who think it will be good fun.

Clothing question.
Is a "sweater" a sweatshirt? Like made of cotton fabric, fluffy on the inside. Or is it a jersey/jumper thingy made of a woolen or similar fabric? Does it always go over your head? or can it button up the front?
*confused*

Okay... I have been cooking this morning....
I got the idea from Pinterest.. a recipe Amy found. It started out as SW Stuffed peppers... and ended up being way too fiddly... so I changed it up to make SW pepper one pot meal :)
Sweet Bell Peppers - Bell Peppers - Red, Yellow, Orange oven roasted and diced
Del Monte - Gold & White Super Sweet Corn, 1 can
Bush's Best - Black Beans - Reduced Sodium 1can
Aldi - Casa Mamita Mild All Natural Chunky Salsa, 1 jar
Onions - Raw, 1 cup, chopped
celery - 4 sticks
Rice - White, long-grain, regular, cooked, 2 C
Ground Turkey 1 pound
I will add shredded cheese and black olives when I serve
obviously I cooked turkey onion and celery till cooked and added the rest and mixed :P

THE MUSIC BOX
Okay... during my reading on saturday.. there was mention of a music box. She asked me if I have a music box connected with my mother. After thinking on it, I realized that I have a little one that you can put a photo into so it is the top of the box. I mentioned that.. she said does it pen.. well, the lid comes off.. but that didn't seem right to her. She asked if it had a picture I said yes. IT never shook down quite right.. but I let it go...
Until last night. My sister had a phone call from my cousin. Many years ago when my mothers mother passed... my cousin''s family got everything that belonged to her. Even things that had been meant to go to us. One thing was a cook book. Grandma tried to give it to my sister when she was alive, but Aunt Betty took it right out of Debbie's hands. So, last night my cousin Cheryl called Debbie. ( Cheryl is my crazy cousin Janice's sister and they have a brother Eddie) His father is my uncle Eddie who showed up in my reading..
Okay sorry.. trying to give background. So cousin Eddie had all this stuff .... Labor Day Cheryl was down visiting him and he sent the cook book with her to be given to my sister. He also sent a music box. It opens. It belonged to my mother's mother. My mom made it for her. There is a picture of my grandparents on top. So.. clearly Uncle Eddie was letting me know that cousin Eddie was sending me a music box that I never knew existed. Another clear validation from the other side.

Hugs back :) It didn't get any better when I went in, either. No one looked at me when I walked in, stood there to sign in, and I waited about 3-4 minutes to say I wanted to wait outside, and would they ring my cell...
the room was packed. I didn't want to stress Dunkers out or add to the bedlam. No one smiled at me when I checked in OR when I checked out. Didn't even make eye contact. Lovely ..
Saw the new doctor... she is holistic, and I like her a lot. She was very good with Dunkers.. her name is Ingrid.

I'm glad at least the doctor came through like that. That kind of treatment by the front desk is so frustrating.
128Matke
I'm so glad you caught the ear thing quickly; just shows what a good furmom you are!
We're encountering more and more of that sort of behavior by front desk people; it's one of the few things that makes me glad I live where I do; people are still pretty polite here, and the pace is slow enough that they can take the time to pay attention. On the other side of the coin, I've been at counters and said, "Oh, fine, take all the time you need, I'm in no hurry at all," with a little smile, and been rewarded by almost pathetifcally grateful clerks.
Good to hear about Dr. Ingrid, though. Must be a relief that you don't have to rely on just the one person all the time.
A peaceful evening to you, and relief to Duncan.

You must like the vet a lot because the rest of staff sound positively horrible, Kath. That's just so strange ... in all veterinary clinics I've been to (for my mom's dogs, or in the past with my own pets) the staff have always been very friendly and all make a fuss over the animals.
Poor Duncan... hope he feels better with his new ear drops

I hope Duncan feels better soon - glad the vet herself was ok if not the reception staff. My dog needs his nails doing too - I can't bear to take him...

Hi Joe.. she is new to the practice, and also holistic. The last "3rd " doctor they had was awful.. just awful, although her husband who filled in at times ( also a vet of course ) was great. By awful I mean not nice. She was to drug oriented for me.. always pushing things I just said no to. After seeing her 3 times or so, I siad I wouldn't see her anymore.
Gail.. thank you :) I try. I am very tuned in to Dunkers.. but the ear thing got me. When I looked.. I didn't see anything much.. but she said it was so deep it woud be difficult for me to see...hard to miss a dog shaking his head though, so... And you are so right about Ingrid! I am so relieved that she is there. I hope she stays. Dunkers seems a bit better this morning... I absolutely don't mind waiting if I can see someone is busy. I am a stickler for being acknowledged though. It doesn't take much to make eye contact and smile...
Caro.. That is the Vet where I used to work. ( they still give me a discount which is handy for those high priced meds that keep Dunkers alive... ) I think Doug is a very good Vet. When I was there I was front desk manager, then office manager and I trained the front desk. So it is double- y annoying to me when I hear those girls giving out incorrect information to people on the phone ( or right there for that matter). Not greeting people, not going over how to use the meds ... those were all MUSTS in my day.. which admittedly was some time ago. But if you get bad information from your Vet about issues... where do you turn? The only time I saw head shaking today is right when I put in the tickle-y drops.. so.. better! And yes.. I have tried ( once) to alert them to the fact that their front dest was filled with unfriendly chits who have no clue... although I was much more diplomatic. They were none too pleased. So I suck it up and mourn for the good old days when people could trust that they were actually being helped properly.
Thanks Genny. I am very bad at doing Duncans nails on my own. They got very long when he was stray and or in "Sanctuary". The wick is very ong, and they are mostly black. They are also as hard as iron. I do snip or grind them a bit if need be, but, for the most part, I leave it to the pros. I used to do my other dogs nails.. but as with so many things. Dunkers is a bit more difficult in that area :P
Megan, I so agree. People should be nicer in general .. and Both Sunkers and I hug you back :)
There was a nice man today at the grocery. I always fantasize about not taking my shopping cart back to the store.. then I take it back in. Today, a guy with a baby was right near me, and so I offered to take his as well..seconds later a man parked, got out and he took them from me and he took them in :) I tell you .. it made my day :) AND apples were on sale!!!

Hi Gail... so true.. the small things can either keep us going or be the final straw! LOL
Darryl.. thanks.. hopefully all is well. I always hate waiting for bloodwork results. He is much better already though, so I am glad for that.
Mamie.. in this day and age, snarkiness is almost all you get, it seems. It just bothers me more there, and in other medical practices than at the deli. I am so happy to see you back to posting :) yay!
Cee... Dunkers hugs back.. but carefully. He is worried about you too.
Okay .. just for updating purposes I'm about halfway through Destiny of the Republic which is a trade paperback, and about four chapters or so into The House of Velvet and Glass on my nook.
Dinner is in the oven.. baked potatoes, meat loaf, broccoli and I made a topping for the potatoes from plain yogurt and a ranch dressing packet... it is really yummy! Lower cal than some other things, and I had to use the yogurt.
Craig is on a flight from Chicago to StL and almost home from his trip to Ireland.
Cory Leaves for Las Vegas on Monday.. and Amy and Adam are staying put for the minute.

Hi Kath - Glad to hear Duncan's blood work came back good! Ear infections can come on so fast and so hard to see when they are deep in the ear. Copper gets them often because of her floppy ears and swimming habits. We go through a lot of vinegar and water ear drops.
Your darling pictures made me smile - such adorable kids!!

Glad to hear Duncan's bloodtests were ok. Re cutting claws, I've tried to do Ty's myself, but although I only trim a very small amount, one time I managed to make one claw bleed. Ty was completely oblivious, and obviously not in pain, but it makes me nervous about trying again...

Hi Joanne.... thanks. Poor Dunks. He was shaking his head again this morning, then quit. Poor baby...
I clean with vinegar and water... and make sure to use cotton during baths... I have to LOL at Dunkers voluntarily swimming at any time....
Genny...keep a wee bit of flour handy and if you happen to nip a wick, it will stop the bleeding. Just pack a bit on the nail. I did that to Duncan once...and once to Dirk.. Have you ever tried this ?
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-7300-PT-4-8-Volt-Pet-Grooming/dp/B003TU0XG4/ref=sr_...
I use a similar one in between cutting.. sometimes... he tolerates it surprisingly well! It doesn't take the place of a trim, but it can help.. or if you are trimming yourself and get a ragged nail ( that happens now and then to me.. it will smooth it..
Busy already today.. did the floors and taking pictures down to clean them.. fans....I will be back later to check all the threads. I figured I would pop in while I had my coffee... just to say good morning.

Morning, Kath!
Had a walk, had a shower, listened to the first two chapters of The Dunwich Horror while on my walk...
Read for 30 minutes.
Bridge today. Sigh.
At Dr.'s yesterday, I very suddenly, and quite unpleasantly for myself, realized that I'm living my mother's life, something I swore I'd never do. Crap. Guess the dr. knows what he's talking about after all....

Valerie Bertinelli's Pumpkin Pancakes Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
Pinch ground cloves
3/4 cup whole milk
2 large eggs, separated
1/2 cup puree solid-pack pumpkin
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Unsalted butter for the skillet
Warm maple syrup
Cooking Directions
Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves in a bowl and whisk to combine. Whisk in the milk, egg yolks, pumpkin, and oil until just combined. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the egg whites on high until they hold stiff peaks, about 2 minutes. Using a rubber spatula, gently but thoroughly fold the whites into the batter.
Preheat a large well-seasoned cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, and add just enough butter to coat. When a drop of water thrown into the skillet bounces across the surface vigorously, add 1/4-cup dollops of batter, allowing enough room between each for them to spread slightly. Cook until the edges appear cooked, adjusting the heat as necessary, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook about 2 minutes more. Serve warm with the maple syrup.
Per serving (when serving 4): 467 calories, 8 g protein, 63 g carbohydrates, 21 g total fat, 5 g saturated fat, 2 g fiber, 170 mg sodium
Per serving (when serving 8): 285 calories, 4 g protein, 45 g carbohydrates, 11 g total fat, 3 g saturated fat, 1 g fiber, 87 mg sodium

Cee... I say hand over the Bisquick and hope for the best... surely he can manage that?
I hope that the next weeks pass quickly for you! I imagine that now it isn't just painful, but frustrating, to see things that need to be done and not be able to do them?
rd... Marshmallow treats with rice krispies... yum yum yum. I always have to immediately give away half of any batch I make so that I dont just sit down and eat it all.
Mamie.. they were good, very good. And with the leftover batter, I made mini muffins.. also quite good!
Thanks to Caro, I just finished two fun and entertaining reads, A Gift of Ghost and A Gift of Thought.
If I were to hang a label on them, it would be YA. There is a fun twist in these books that Kara would like, I think? ( Kara, where are you ?)
I am about to begin Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power, which surely qualifies as a tome. It is a physically heavy book. Only 500 ish pages, but about half again that in notes. It is a have to read, so I hope it's good.

Hi Jude... thanks for the link :)
I like my krispie treats ungarnished. Makes my mouth water thinking about them !
Cee.... fingers crossed that you can get something that works better for you.
I would imagine that anything meant to secure your shoulder would be SUPER uncomfortable. So
sorry :(
Cory is off to LV. My kids are running all over the planet lately. For him, it's work related.
I will have some things to do today. First on the agenda is a walk to the store for milk.
I considered going yesterday, but just couldn't stop being too lazy to do it. So I have to go this morning. Coffee needs milk. Trust me, there is enough to start off with :)
Then, I think I am making Mamies GoTo chicken ....

Well, I just applied for another job. Clearly the last one doesn't want me. I went to a local store to look at sweaters on sale. I was joking around with the woman who works there.... she was telling me how great I look in this jacket. Which I didn't buy. Anyway, I have an interview at noon tomorrow. Selling Clothes...!!!
LOL Me. I can't even dress myself. sheesh! Can you imagine?

Ellen, I admit to envy. Benedum is beyond our budget... oh well...
I love all things pumpkin... yum!
Bonnie, one year.. a bad year... menopause, depression, empty nest and more.... got a craving for pumpkin cookies. No pumpkin in the house. I cried and called my neighbor who took me to a store to get pumpkin and choco chips. I shared with her after baking... lol. I think of that every time someone mentions or I see pumpkin cookies. As for the job, I have a terrifying feeling that I am going to get it. Seriously, if I am going to look like a grown up human instead of sme weirdly dressed gremlin, I need someone to go with. I wear only jeans and flannel shirts... ( cotton in summer) most of the time.. or oversized sweat shirts... I don't care much about clothes. ye gods. Oh and I am impressed with anyone who tackles pumpkins and turns them into food. Libby works for me .. lol.
RD we used to make them all the time, when the kids were home. No more. Don't care for them that much.
Read a bit yesterday. So far TJ is a bit of a slog.. From what I read so far and what I find online can't quite sort out what kind of dumbwaiter he was supposed to have invented. I spent an hour looking at dumbwaiters and reading online. reading about Monticello. I sort of got stuck on that... lol. The book seems to throw all sorts of facts in random places... without much story to pull them together. Hope it gets more cohesive.

hi kath -
be careful re job selling clothes - esp when you have little in your own closet. they are probably counting on you spending your paycheck in store. i had a job in the baby dept - right after i had a baby girl. had to quit. the job was costing me too much - even though i only got things on sale. *le sigh* for sure!

Thank you both ..... but let me be clear. I do not want to work there.I don't know how I got into this.. I just went to buy a sweater. GAK. I appreciate all of the positive comments and wishes. ...
I just feel like if someone offers me a job, any job, I need to take it. It was a discussion.. we were laughing.. and joking around and suddenly I have an interview. They called my references.. I am so screwed.
The job I applied for at the beginning of the month was at a library. It is miles away, but I wanted it so much.. never even got a call. I can't tell you how disappointed I am about that. I do not want/like retail. I hate to shop. I just don't have it in me to not take it without giving it a try, if someone is going to give me money. Wah. AND Margie got a call from them to check my references. She then promptly called me and told me about a woman who works there who I don't like.... she is a friend of my sisters and they used to sit around talking crap about my kids. ( Becky) What is UP with the universe?
What to do?

You must have shown signs of being happy. The xian gawd is crapping all over you. She only does that if you've dared to lift your spirits a hint above self-loathing and misery.
Quick! Make a move on Dan! You can get back to being miserable, and maybe get a job you don't abhor.

Quick, Kath.... tell Margie to call them back and say she suddenly remembered some negative things about you ...poor personal hygiene for one, that may be somewhat off-putting with customers. Then they won't offer you the job and you won't have to take it and potentially be miserable working with someone you don't like.
211jolerie
Aww, if you don't want the job, I hope you can turn it down? It's not fun being at a job you don't want to be at. Anyways, if you take it, I hope it surprises you? Or you can just turn them down and I'm sure they will be okay with that too.

Terri. Too right :( I have this thought that I won't have to work with Becky.. who only works sunday. I told her I can't work Sunday. You are too right..
Paul.. it was Frank's pizza.. a little family owned place, and it was yum. Wish you could have had some :)
Cee..You are absolutely right, and I know it. But I feel... well... you know.
Mark.. the whole thing stinks.. I am sad that the library didn't even give me a chance. B&N hasn't called... I am trying not to feel too bad about that as I know a young pretty woman with a degree in Lit and is a teacher... who has tried there and they never call her either. Destiny is Fabulous.
Maybe they won't call? They are doing a background check.. which I will pass.. I have had clearances for most of the last ten years. BUT~ They had a Quiz. What would you do if ??? One of the questions was if someone put together a horrible outfit. I said that if I thought it made them feel good, I would tell them it was great! I might suggest they also try something else. ( goddess only knows what.. ) But who am I to tell someone how to dress?
She asked me to sell her on my outfit ( a pair of pants way too big and a sweater that fell to my knees... oops.. and no pockets) I went with roomy and comfortable, but I would suggest going with pants that had pockets. ( mine didn't )
sigh

Do you know how much more likely I would be to buy out a store that had someone in it who said, "Are you comfortable? Then it's all good" than someone who said, "Oh sir, it's so flattering!" when it's a size too small and a modish color that makes me look like a beached beluga?
If you take the job, be yourself, and let customers learn how good it feels to be listened to for once. You'll be the top seller in no time, and people will be making your day with praise.

Genny... I know... I feel that way too. But I have bought most of my clothes online for YEARS now.
Nothing ever quite fits..... but...

Day is off to a good start. Bike x 30 ( ugh...it is too warm )
Floors and bathroom done.
coffee at hand.
crab meat thawing...
eta
my book.. Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power
ouch ouch ouch
I almost never take notes to write a review. Rarely need to. But since this feels more like a textbook to me,
I am taking notes. I sure with that it was more like Destiny of the Republic. Meacham vs Millard is no contest in my opinion. And frankly... I have found things in the book that are not quite backed up by online research, but of course I have no way of knowing which is correct. This is mostly about the Hemings family and Jefferson's inventions.
I know nothing about Meecham or his writing reputation, so I'm not sure what to think. I guess I will research him a bit, too.

Morning Kath! Sorry about the job muddles - like Richard, I would love to have someone working in clothing that put comfort ahead of the current trend. No matter what you are wearing or how much you paid, what really matters is how you feel about yourself while you are in it. Some people need to feel that they look stylish in order to feel good about their outfit, the next person needs to feel comfortable and it's more about texture and weight of the material - Rae is a good example of this type of person. Everybody is different, so how refreshing it would be to have a salesperson who is concerned about how you FEEL in the clothing. Perhaps the Universe wants you to have this job - did you think about that? I mean, it did just kind of fall into your lap...
Anyway, whatever you do will be fine - if they offer you the job, see how you feel at that moment and then decide.
Wish I could have enjoyed that pizza with you. Hope today is a good one. I'll check back later.

Okay.. my sister came with me and I did a dry run... I had no idea where this library was located. I knew the town... and sort of how to get there. It is 10.2 miles away. That is only 3 miles more than my old job.
I have no idea about parking.. but figure I will park at the drug store and hope to not get towed and walk the half block to the Library.
I went to Kohles and bought a pair of black pants that fit. I have an ivory blouse, long sleeves with vertical stripes that I will wear. Sadly it is going to be wicked warm for oct.. like 78... so no cardigan.. and pearl earrings.. my only jewelry.. I just wear them to keep the piercings there.. :P
The pants are size short.. but I still need to turn them up an inch, because I don't wear shoes with heels.. I think i have a pair with hunky heels.. sort of loafer- ish I need to try before I turn them up tho..
I can still barely breathe..

Thank you calm :)
I wowed them with my new shirt, I think...
Upside... nearly everything...
It's a library
It's old and decrepit and has bits of itself jutting out everywhere.. like a maze.
( I didn't tell her about my bad sense of direction) ( yes, I can get lost in a bldg)
I will work 18-21 hours a week.. depending on the week.. and every other saturday.
If I get the schedule I want, I will work tues, wed, thurs and alternate saturdays.
I can wear jeans. I can wear sneakers. ( srsly) They encourage sneakers! I just got new ones..
I also just got new jeans.
Downside?
Parking is going to be difficult to figure out at first.. but will be fine eventually when I do.
No a/c in summer. ( GAK)
Negligible, but look for me to complain about the heat starting in June :P

Valium and a G&T. You'll be zonked until Monday and therefore unable to make it worse by 1) sitting on it 2) doing too much housework 3) hauling heavy things from attic to basement to car to attic again 4) running around in circles screaming.

That is exactly what my happy dance looks like!
This is so great Kath, huge congratulations. LTers love it when other LTers get jobs in libraries.

Having remembered the Friends of the Library Sale factor, I herewith rescind all good wishes until I am reassured that, when such occurs, you will hide books I will like so I can get them.
265mckait
In other words, any books that I like are safe, if I will not like them, save them for you?
266richardderus
Pretty much....

what great news! i'm so so happy for you!
a big, old building? it may wind up being cool in summer??? my old childhood library always was a nice place to retreat to on a hot day.
you are gonna be GREAT!
so, you think it was your shirt that got you the job? LOL
maybe you should rent it out - to make extra $$$

Personally, I don't think it was the shirt. I think your intelligence and your love of books & reading shone through when they interviewed you; and they could probably tell that you have a familiarity with what a library is and the basics of how books are organized in a library. (You'd be amazed at how many people have no clue . . .)
I think you will do very well. Now, best wishes for the ankle to stop its ouchies.

YAY! Congratulations, Kath!
3-4 days a week, casual enough that you can wear jeans and sneakers, at a library housed in an old building that hopefully has some character, and they're going to pay you to hang out with books :) - sounds perfect! I'm so happy for you!
Now rest that ankle...

Gail... I wish you had told me.. lol
And thank you for being happy for me :) I am pretty happy for me, too. Weirdly... this week I was first offered a job at the convenience store at the bottom of my hill, the clothing store, and The Library. Of course I chose door number three :) AND I can wear jeans and sneakers.
Cee... Thank you, too :) all this happy is making me happier :) And you're right.. it does have big high ceilings. It is a building that has lost a lot of it's original glory, but settled into itself. So compared to other libraries, it may not be vast and shiny, but it is meandering and cozy. It is like other libraries and is suffering from financial crunchiness. And rent out my lucky shirt?! No way! I am just glad to have it .. lol. It's a hand me up from my sister...One moment I feel terrified, and the next I feel *ahhhhhhhhhhhhh* you know?
My biggest concern is figuring out parking as it is all metered on the street, and the town is one where you have to be .....alert. Especially at night.
Terri... why thank you! :) I have to say that I felt confident. You should have heard me... lol
The director and another woman were on one side of the table and I was on the other.. some back room area.. I just took a deep breath and told them why they should hire me. LOL.. The director mentioned the glowing letters of reference ( some of them VERY old) and asked if I can give her an instance of when I went above and beyond in a job. So I told her about creating a library at the school.. and mentioned cataloging on LT. They are familiar with LT :) That made me happy. The director ( I think that's her title?) is very laid back an easy going.. friendly..
Joanne... thank you :) and it does have character.. They have a nice little area with computers...
a lot of well worn tables ( which means that they have been well used) and no feelings of stuffiness.
I plan to .. I braced it up.. have some errand this morning, but plan on not doing a lot after. An hour or two at most. I admit to being a bit worried about that..
Donna.. The ones I met seem nice enough. The other person hired is named Deb. There is another Kathy...
I told her kath is fine for me.. and if it makes it easier, I can live with katie. kathleen is sort of ponderous...
So.. yay me ! lol

Hi Caro and Gail :)
Okay Cee and Joanne and Mamie... here it is, Mark!
My Big Night Out
by Kathy McStay
... Okay ... Babi. Or Biba... whatever.
Menu link above. Turns out that only some of the things are options on any given night. I ate a pork chop. Possibly with broccoli on too. Dunno, didn't eat that. It was a pork chop. The waiter suggested the pulled pork, so I'm not sure if the pulled on it prior to serving or? Doug noticed that it wasn't what was suggested, too.. but, I wasn't going to fuss. It was a chop. There was that and lamb. They all had lamb. It was a BYOB place, and Judy brought a red and a white. Dinner lasted nearly 2 hours. First they served tiny bits of chopped fruit, I think it was apple, pear and pineapple? And hot pepper. They ordered appetizers... Guac and chips and brussel sprouts. My guac is better. So, I was frankly unimpressed with the food, but the company was good and it was a nice time.
Then the play.
http://www.lppac.org/events/show.php?=74
They hadn't noticed that it was audience participation.. This was a play of a wedding. There was no difference between this and being a wedding guest, except that there was a bit of drama by the cast at the church service. We were meant to sing a hymn. There were photographers.
Then we went to the reception, in another building. There was a receiving line... hugging.. much ado. That was sort of fun. (?) ( ish) We went to our tables and there was music, and dancing and toasts ( with water) and eventually there was a cookie table... ( common wedding thing in SWPA) more music, everyone was meant to dance.. there were little kids running around and dancing.. and then.. I swear to God, there was wedding food. Pasta, chicken, salad, rolls... and people loading up their plates. It was the weirdest thing I ever experienced. When they tapped our table to go up for food, we slipped out. Then we went to the parking lot and finished off the wine in the car. ( She had glasses ). I am not a wine drinker, it gives me headaches... but last night I did drink wine. White. Still had a headache this morning, not sure if it was related.
All in all it was a nice time...
RD and Cee.. nope... no job on offer. Despite current circumstances in the clinic..LOL
None so blind, etc rd...
So, I'm glad I went...it was weird, but nice.

Very strange! And funny! What cracks me up is that I hate to go to weddings - you could not pay me to go to the wedding of someone that I didn't know - and yet this was a wedding that people paid to go to! Did yo feel like you had entered the Twilight Zone?
312Matke
We can always count on you to find the good stuff amongst the very strange...Don't guess that restaurant will be on your "go-to" list.
Good vibes heading your way for Monday. And tomorrow, and the rest of today, of course.
