HAPPY NEW THREAD!

I'm up early. Dogs fed. First cuppa has been had; and I need to get up to make the second.

Will be reading for much of today.

Yay!

and boo: the RA is swelling my left wrist and so that hand is less than strong. Dang.

Hope your day is perfect!

Ain't that the truth!

Karen is first! Karen is first! I am just finishing up my 3rd and final cup of java. We are planning on seeing Zero Dark Thirty, early this afternoon but I hope to read the remainder of the Bean Trees before I go. I just have to tear myself away from LT first.

Mamie- Best seat in the house! Wolf whistle! Thanks for making it by, my friend.

We are getting ready to head out to see Zero Dark Thirty. With my son and FIL. The guys.

Julia- I hope you found the perfect seat! Thanks for coming by.

Diana- Yes, I am curious to see how the film and book compare, especially the actual take-down.

Roberta- We just watched the Christmas Special, which for some reason is not included on the 2nd disc. Maybe you can watch it online. Have not read the memoir.

Morphy- I am waiting for 2 now! Lucky us!

Hi Mark! Dropping in to say hi before the lines get too long. ;-) My sister bought me The Midwife, the first "Call the Midwife" memoir. It was fabulous. I cannot wait to see the episodes, but I can't find them, and we don't have netflix. I'm hoping they will re-air season 1 right before beginning season 2.

We LOVED the film. Intense, informative and perfectly crafted. I had no problem with the 2hr 40 minute running time. My FIL said it only felt like 30 minutes. This is a close second to my favorite film of '12, which was Lincoln. I am so glad I read No Easy Day first, to see how close the film-makers adhered to the eye-witness account. Nailed it!

Plus, Jessica Chastain has such a great face! That's an Old-School Hollywood face.

Pat- I didn't know where that image was from. I snagged it from FB. How was The Treehorn Trilogy? Worth it?

Lisa- I'm sure you will love Call the Midwife, the TV show. Does it look like they will repeat the 1st season? If so, that should come on, in a week or 2. I would like to eventually read the memoir. Glad to hear you loved it.

Joe- Perfect Guy's Day out! Plus the DW had an early dinner ready for us when we returned. Sweet, huh?

Deb- I didn't post that cartoon on FB, because I didn't want to hear laughs & grumbles from my male buddies. LOL. I am so glad you are considering joining us for A Fine Balance. Yah!

**DA Spoiler Alert: If you have not seen this past Sunday's episode, skip around.

Are we ready to talk DA? Is it safe? Can we finally discuss the horrible boiler explosion? The arms and the legs, oh my! Just kidding of course! A main character died and I did not see it coming. I agree, with Ellen, that something needed to shake this show up but I did not expect it in quite this way. Not until Sybil and Cora have their final heartfelt chat, did I start to strongly suspect something and then at that point "something" had to happen.
I think the show handled this shocking death with respect and decency. The actors were wonderful, portraying their grief, especially Carson, Mrs. Hughes and I am not kidding...Thomas.

After the doctors got into an argument. I thought she might have died during the actual birth. I think Bates should be killed in prison and wifey can get on with her life. She should marry Bramson and they can raise the baby. I am tired of the Bates story line.

Roberta- Yes, steampunk counts! What are you planning to read? On DA: I didn't like what Mary said to Edith. Really? Now?
Here's the Fantasy Feb Thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/148660#t

Cindy- Let it all out, my friend! LOL. I have been tired of the Anna & Bates storyline since the middle of season 2. I don't see Anna with Branson. Maybe the chauffeur and Edith?

Kim- I am glad I could assist. Anytime, my friend. Yes, see a movie. There are some good ones out there.

Megan- I get ribbed a little, on my reading obsession, from a few of my male friends. The good news is, it doesn't slow me down at all. The photo is from DA, circa England 1920.

Stasia- Loving Waves back!

OK Mark, here is my two cents. They killed off the one character who represented sweetness and light. She learned how to cook with Mrs. Patmore, she voluntarily did the worst jobs in the infirmary (not just writing letters for the soldiers) and she represented the only forward thinking character on the show. She thought nothing of marrying someone of, not only a lower class, but a chauffeur in her father's house.

At the same time they have made an absolute monster out of Lord Grantham. Did you know that in the UK people have been sending the actor who plays LG death threats? Ridiculous I know, but there you have it.

I realize that they had nowhere to go with the storyline with Sybil and Tom but this was not a good way to go IMO.

ETA: And if there is a legal battle with the Grantham's trying to take the baby away from Tom that will end it for me.

*eyes shut* Not reading posts on Downton Abbey 'til I've caught up online (I just watched episode 3 today).

29LauraBrook
Edited: Jan 30, 2013, 11:45 pm

27: I agree, and my goodness, do people not get that this is an actor doing his job? While his characters' blind arrogance and dumb-assery are astounding, it is what he, the actor, is paid to do, and I'm sure that situations exactly like this happened more than once back in the day. (Let's not discuss any modern parallels, shall we?)

My hairstylist (sounds too fancy for what's on my head) was looking for a Grantham family tree somewhere online, clicked onto a link for somewhere in the UK, and, without any spoiler warnings ahead of time (because I think the whole season has already aired there) she saw a Big Huge Spoiler. She didn't tell me what it was, because she's not that mean, and after I watched the show I asked her if Sybil was the Big Spoiler. It's not. So now, there's another huge and horrible thing out there and it's making me lose my patience with the show. I'm all for a little angsty drama in my TV shows, but it's becoming a bit much. I still like the show a lot, don't get me wrong, but I'm starting to wonder if Julian Fellowes isn't getting a little too wrapped up in the sensation of DA.

I think there are three more episodes this season. Ends the week before the Oscars, I think (2/17). Not positive. So, Laura, that'll have to happen soon.

This week's episode shook things up. I'm getting tired of the whole prison scene.

I did not see this past episode coming. However, looking back, she didn't have much of a role anymore. Not sure what they could've done with her.

Jan 31, 2013, 12:36 am

Lovely new thread, Mark. I thought the moment of Thomas' grief was truly touching. P and I have been going back and watching the first two seasons and the man's evil is occasionally tarnished with moments of genuine anguish. His grief at the death of the blinded soldier in the army hospital, and his intense loneliness and feeling of being "other" were very poignant. I assume that in the next installation he will be up to his manipulative and self-serving ways again.

33EBT1002
Jan 31, 2013, 12:39 am

By the way, I was telling Kerri at our meet-up that I read The Bean Trees when it was first published, long before Kingsolver was known to anyone (I even remember picking it up at the bookstore "Women and Children First" in Chicago). I adored it and have always felt a strong (and completely irrational) sense of ownership of the author. You know, as in "I knew and loved her before anyone else knew she existed." Silly. But that first novel, and the subsequent two, especially Pigs in Heaven, were just wonderful. I'm glad you're enjoying.

Okay, I have to look away from the DA stuff, but that's okay. I still have to watch the first episode.
I do see some complaints about various story lines on DA. Hmm have you sold me a bad bill of goods with DA? Hmm Mark :) But I'm not really reading them.

As for not posting real men read, well, okay, L.R. I understand. It's such a cool graphic though. Hey, my husband reads and he's a real man. Actually he was snickering earlier this evening because I got True Grit out of the library as a possible read. He thought that was hilarious as I am not a " western reader" and he asked - who got to you on the book site? ;) It was Nancy aka Lit Chick. Wait til I finally admit to having DA.... all because of " that book site.

Morning folks! We have a little snow, wind, ice and cold temps, all day. And I get to stay warm & snug, visit friends and READ! How about them apples?
I finished The Bean Trees. Loved it. I have Pigs in heaven on the shelves, so I'll bookhorn that one in later in the year. I'll be starting Tigana today for both FF and the Group read. If anyone was not aware we were doing either and would be interested. Let me know.

Bonnie- "They killed off the one character who represented sweetness and light." Perfectly said. Sybil was the warmest and most selfless character on the show or at last upstairs. I wouldn't call Robert a monster but he is definitely a clueless ass.
I hope they handle the baby situation in a proper way. Let's not get ridiculous.
BTW- Sending Hugh Bonneville death threats? People need to get a life. Come on!

Mary- I hope you can open your eyes soon. You are missing lots of stuff! LOL.

Laura- "blind arrogance and dumb-assery are astounding". You said it, sister! I hope the show ends strong. I've heard it said this 3rd season is better than the 2nd. I don't see it...yet, although that 2nd season had some very lame moments.

Terri- Good to see you! Glad you found your way over.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Bean Trees, Mark. That was my introduction to Kingsolver and she has yet to disappoint. I'm hunkered down for the day too, you Chicagoans are so kind to send your lovely weather to us.
@ Laura, wait, I know the second surprise and you better have smelling salts at hand.
Bonnie covered the Sybil effect very nicely, I have no need to add anything.
ETA: My favorite memory of Sybil - I loved the scene last season when Sybil modeled her new harem outfit. So adorable.
Enjoy your day!

Edited: Jan 31, 2013, 8:05 am

Linda- Like I mentioned to Laura, I hope the show ends well. The season has been just okay and needs more bang. I really see no reason to do a 4th season. What else needs to be said?

Ellen- I liked the Thomas moment too but I am seriously tired of his shenanigans. Either do something different and fresh with his character or fire his ass.
Yes, it looks like you and Kingsolver have a nice history. This is my 3rd by her but I am really going to try reading all of her work.

Deb- Yahoo! You are one of us now! Soon you'll be wearing corsets and petticoats. Pay no attention to the DA grumbling, it's part of the love. At least these seasons are short, so you'll catch up. I am sure you will be ordering season 2. And yes, it is a big glossy soap.

Megan- What kind of ribbing do you get at the book clubs? Are they calling you snobbish, because you refuse to read 50 shades of Grey? Do they generally select pretty good books?

Lisa- Wow, a pair of back to back NZers! I am honored. Good to see you. Love the poster! Looks like a tough bunch.

Darryl- Good to see you sir. Yes, it's been a good week to be off. Lots of rain and now a blast of winter.

Tina- I have not posted my review yet. It's a work in progress. Hopefully, later today. Sneak preview: LOVED IT!

Joe- Yep, very pleased with the film. Were you a fan of The Hurt Locker too? I think it was 2 home runs by this talented female director.

Jan 31, 2013, 12:52 pm

Hi Mark. I'm glad you liked Zero Dark Thirty. I can't decide if I'm going to go see it in the theaters or not. So far no one wants to go with me. They all think it will be too violent. I "loved" The Hurt Locker and keep on forgetting it's the same director.

#6 The Treehorn Trilogy is a series of children's books about an only child (named Treehorn) whose parents are so wrapped up in their own world they fail to see the fantastic things that are happening in his life. The picture you posted reminded me of the book because the parent seems to be ignoring the child (although on a quick flip through the books, I'm not seeing that drawing so maybe it's just resembles the ones in The Treehorn Trilogy). Edward Gorey's drawings are what made the books for me. That plus the three books are hardcovers that come in their own slipcase. I love that stuff. Here's the cover of the boxed set. Gorey is very into drawing patterns.

All this nonsense about "not having time" to read so much *scoff scoff* etc, wears me down somewhat (as was recently spouted by MIL). It happens to be my passion, so I make time for it. At the expense of other things. I dont know why people cant just say "oh, cool!".

Ah well.

Do they generally select pretty good books?
This new Bookclub does themes. Past themes include
-Booker Prize Winner
-Mental Health
-Biography
-African literature
-Mills and Boon (Harlequin Romance type- for a laugh)
-Bryce Courtenay (in honour of his recent death)
And this months is to select a book form the Whitcoulls Top 100 (Whitcoulls is a chain of bookshops/stationery seller here)
Im going to slot To Kill a Mockingbird in for that one- and am looking forward to it.

Mark, I actually like Lady Mary.

Megan- You always crack me up! We could never have a few drinks together. They wouldn't be able to tear us away! I like your book club choices, other than the Mills and Boon. At least there is some room there for some good reading. Is the African literature have to be by an African author or just set in Africa? If it's the latter, how about the Poisonwood Bible?

Linda- Keeping warm out there? It's a cold one. Mary has been a bit stuffy for me, this season. I liked her better in season 2. As far as spoilers go, that's one of the drawbacks of airing in GB first. Oh, well.

Hey there!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is fantastic. I didn't "listen" to it, though. I'll bet that was an interesting experience.

Now I very much want to take a look at Howl: A Graphic Novel. I just finished Mania: the Story of the Outraged and Outrageous Lives that Launched a Cultural Revolution, which deals with the Beats, and it inspired me to check some things out further with more background information. That includes Howl in its various aspects.

I read nearly 90 pages of Tigana. Not so easy, with the big party going on over at Ellen's! Hell, I haven't partied like that in decades. Sure, LTers love their books but they also love their "refreshments". I hope someone got all those cans & bottles cleaned up.
It took me a few pages to get into the flow of Tigana but I am really enjoying it.

Hi Mark, I LOVE L.T! Maybe it was from your thread that I got the idea to read The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe and loved reading about the various kids books that were his favourites. I knewThe Story of Ferdinand (great book!) but not the Purple Crayon so up I went to the children's section of our local library to read it. Hi Mark, I was on my way over here yesterday but I got distracted by the arrival of the February TIOLI Challenges, but I hear you and some other rowdies partied hard over at Ellens!

Yes, I had no trouble convincing hubby that we should go see Zero Dark Thirty this weekend. You've geared me up for that one!

I know you will love Tigana, Guy Gabriel Kay is one of my favorite authors, with my favorite being The Lions of Al-Rassan. I have started my first FF book with Bitterblue and I have been pulled into it practically from the first page. Have you read this series by Kristin Cashore?

Well, I like the sound of exotic :) Guess I'll be sticking around for a while!

The movie of The Perks of Being a Wallflower definitely did the book justice. As you probably saw on my first thread, where I compared the book and film versions of The Silver Linings Playbook, I can be a little harsh. My husband and I saw Perks in the theaters, and I cannot wait to own it. It was really well done, I felt.

Mania: the Story of the Outraged and Outrageous Lives that Launched a Cultural Revolution wasn't a GN itself; in fact, it was a weighty and esoteric tome that I waded through. It was an ER, and when I found out I got it, I was scared I was going to be reading another psychological disorders book (of which, of course, there are plenty among the Beats anyway)!

I've put Howl: A Graphic Novel on my wishlist over at PBS. Here's hoping I can get hold of it!

BTW, if you want to stop over, I have a new thread started up for February 1st :)

I can't believe I even said that.

Hi Mark - Happy new thread! Forgive me for quickly flying through. We saw Zero Dark Thirty last week and loved it - wowG! Did you see Beasts of the Southern Wild? Interesting movie. Have you read Life of Pi? The movie was very good but I'd read the book first if you haven't.

I did not like the turn of events in DA last week. She was the one redeeming character that truly cared about social welfare and change and was willing to walk the walk. Oh well....

Glad you liked The Bean Trees. I read it so long ago I hardly remember it but I know I loved it. I think my favorite Kingsolver is The Poisonwood Bible. You'd like it.

Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend is certainly different (although it does remind me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime, which I loved.

62rosalita
Feb 1, 2013, 1:36 am

Joanne, I'm not picking on you because I've seen others say the same thing about Sybil on DA, but do you not think Isobel truly cares about social welfare and is willing to walk the walk? She's the one setting up re-training programs for prostitutes, after all. Which is not to say that Sybil wasn't lovely as well; I just don't think she was the only "good" character on the show.

63Copperskye
Edited: Feb 1, 2013, 2:03 am

Julia, I didn't phrase that very well. And you are right. Rather than character, I should have said family member, meaning the Granthams in particular. The family needs a moral compass and I think she was it. Isobel is certainly a good (sometimes, too good) character but she is from more of a middle class upbringing rather than coming from old money, privileged stock. Isobel always seems to be struggling against the grain of privilege and I think that's a big reason why she is so determined to assist the poor and good for her! Mrs Hughes (in her own way) and Anna downstairs are also certainly characters full of goodness (and not the only ones, either). Their social standing doesn't allow for much good works, however.

eta - And hey, quit picking on me! :)

>52 msf59: Is the African literature have to be by an African author or just set in Africa? If it's the latter, how about the Poisonwood Bible?
the Africa theme was before my time at New Book Club....I think its pretty loose though. So I could have chosen Poisonwood Bible. *Interesting fact alert*
Did you know that Barbara Kingswood wrote that story a heap of times, from the perspective of each separate character, before she was comfortable to assemble the story as it turned out? What dedication! I loved the book.

This time its the Whitcoulls Top 100 list to choose from. Plenty, well, 4, there that I'd read ;)

Oh, and btw, I would love to get together for a beer and a book discussion with you- I believe your daughter has already offered to babysit, so there should be no problem!

Oh my Mark!Well, I had a great aunt who wore a corset and a grandma who referred to her slips and maybe her dressing gown as a " petty coat". Alas, I have not picked out my new book... instead I'm about half way through the first season of Downton Abbey. I definitely don't like Thomas AT ALL.

Morning! Yes, quite a time at Ellen's yesterday. Whew! Time to pay the piper. I can't believe it's Friday already. I DO NOT want this week to end. Another fine day to be off too. Only 11 out there.
The DW and I are planning to meet for lunch, otherwise some light chores and back to the world of Tigana. Anyone else start that yet? I know today is the official launch, along with FF.

Beth- Thanks! Good to see you!

Katie- I'm pretty sure there was a blow-out at Ellen's or some such shenanigans, it's all a bit fuzzy.

Mdoris- I LOVE LT too! Can't you tell? I'm glad you also loved The End of Your Life Book Club, such a gem on many levels. I still have a short list of books added to my WL, that I would still like to get to.
Thanks for stopping by.

Esquiress- I love having an exotic visitor. It boosts my image around here. I will be over to visit your thread. You did find the Fantasy Feb Thread, correct?
I'm looking forward to seeing The Silver Linings Playbook, along with Life of Pi. Those are 2 that got by me. So you are a fan of GNs? I can always use recs.

Ellen- We had a blast over at your place. I found myself giggling, as I kept popping over there. When Darryl posted the cop car, I roared. Game of Thrones? REALLY?

Joanne- Always good to see you, flying fast or not. We did watch Beasts of the Southern Wild. I thought it was pretty good. The girl was excellent. The film reminded me a lot of Salvage the Bones, which was an amazing novel. I have read The Poisonwood Bible. It was my introduction and one I loved. I NEED to get busy with her others.
I appreciate the DA comments too....trouble-maker! :-)

Julia- Are you picking on Joanne? (kidding, of course). Did you know she was my first LT friend, nearly 5 years ago? So she is LT Royalty in my book.

Megan- If we could only narrow that 8,000 miles down to something more reasonable. And yes, Bree would love to babysit and if not, my DW loves the little ones too!
That's very interesting about The Poisonwood Bible. I'll have to reread that one, once I get caught up with a few others of hers.
What is Whitcoulls Top 100? Of course, I can check myself but I want you to visit again.

Deb- Sorry, but now I am picturing the corset and those little red shorts. Yes, DA is infectious. I think my daughter watched the 1st season in a weekend and then the 2nd the following weekend. Not a fan of Thomas, eh? How about O'Brien, his nasty sidekick?

Lynda- Thanks for the first chuckle of the morning. You are a mood-setter. After some coffee, a little fruit and an array of vitamins, I'm much better thanks!

Hi from a much more recent LT friend, Mark! You're right, a very good day not to be working. The radio said 10 F - 20 F below with the wind chill. Walking to and from the train was - refreshing? Is it like putting food in the freezer, and we'll last much longer?

Happy Friday and Happy FF! I've embarked on the whopper fantasy The Memory of Light, which is sprawling but pretty good so far.

11) Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan 4.2 stars

“What do you seek in these shelves?”

Clay Jannon is an unemployed web-designer. One day, while trudging the steep hills of San Francisco, he stumbles on to a shabby building, that houses Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. He enters and like tumbling into a rabbit-hole, his life changes forever.
Clay is quickly immersed and mesmerized by these narrow and impossibly high bookshelves, as Mr. Penumbra shows him around and then offers him a job. The graveyard shift, seven days a week. Clay gladly accepts and after just a couple of days, he begins to realize that there is something very very strange happening in this store and he starts to investigate…
This novel is a joy to read: filled with literary references, high-tech gadgetry, mysteries, shadowy organizations, puzzles and yes, more mysteries. The prose is fresh, clear and fast-moving, carrying you along downstream from one breathless adventure to another.

“...this is exactly the kind of store that makes you want to buy a book about a teenage wizard. This is the kind of store that makes you want to be a teenage wizard.”

"Her home is the burrow of a bibliophile hobbit--low-ceilinged, close-walled, and brimming over with books."

**A big hug and thank you to Tina, for sending this book to me. It's a gem.

Kath- Big morning Wave!

Julia- Okay, no one else can pick on poor Julia! If you do, you will be in big big trouble. You'll have to stand in a corner, without a ........book. How about that?

Joe- Happy Friday to you too, sir! Hope it goes quick for you. Yes, I really enjoyed Mr. Penumbra. It faded a bit in the last section but it was still a lot of fun.
And yes, I am glad a Stay-At-Home Man today!

Diana- I say go for GOT! There is so much high drama in these pages, the fantasy elements are secondary. You should know in the 1st 100 pages if it's for you.
Go Diana, Go Diana!

Linda- "we have our very own upstairs/downstairs." Sounds perfect. Enjoy and come back and let me know what you think.

Mamie- Yes, "yesterday's shenanigans!" were so much fun. Who would guess that being online could bring so many belly-laughs. My wife was getting ready to call 911, probably after Darryl posted that cop car. I'm glad I was home to join in.

I did receive 2 books yesterday. No, this is not a Paul Haul! It's a Mark Mini-Budget Haul. I received when She Woke. I have had this one on my WL, forever, plus Kim threatened me with bodily harm if I did not acquire it immediately. She's a black-belt, you know! And could easily disable this aging letter-carrier.
I also snagged the Color of Lightning, which I have also had on the WL for ages. I have not read Jiles but I have heard good things. I also own Enemy Women.

Diana- Good luck with those first 100 pages. I hope it grabs you the way it did me. I think that's great that you are giving it a try.

Lori- Very astute observation. I didn't even think of that. Poor pup.

Tina- Appreciate the Thumb and thanks for making that thumb possible. Hey, I am going to mix in a few non-FF books with my FF books. It's doable.

Megan- "It contains the usual suspects of course". This is where you may have to step in and give an opinion. You are a feisty gal! And if you want to keep talking about under-garments, go right ahead. Like what's your favorite color and stuff like that.

Happy Saturday, kids! We have SNOW! It's only a couple inches, (TG!) but it's a nice layer and looks pretty. My vaca is winding down but I am trying not to think about that. Let's not get negative, okay?

Ellen- "This crew recreated Doc's party!" LOL. We try to stay with a literary theme. Hey, if you gave GOT a try and it doesn't work...fine! You gave it your all.

12) The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver 4.3 stars

Marietta Greer needs a change. Young, unhappy, restless in her small eastern Kentucky town. She buys a beat-up VW bug, kisses her Mom and hit’s the road. She heads west. She changes her name to Taylor after seeing Taylorville on a highway road sign and lets those bald tires sing.
In Oklahoma, she finds a three year old American Indian girl in her backseat; abandoned, with no hope of finding the family. Taylor names her Turtle and keeps on trucking.
She ends up on the outskirts of Tucson, at an auto-repair shop named Jesus is Lord Used Tires. Her life has officially changed.
This is a perfect first novel, filled with wry humor and keen insight. The prose is tight and the characters are fully-realized.

"I'm just a plain hillbilly from East Jesus Nowhere with this adopted child that everybody keeps on telling me is dumb as a box of rocks. I've got nothing on you, girl."

“There must be transients in the bird world too, rumple-feathered outcasts that naturally seek out each other’s company in inferior and dying trees.”

Karen- I do like the Pacific Northwest. My folks moved to Salem in the early 80s and my sister has been living there with her family, so I have been visiting for many years. It is just so doggone far. Glad to see Ellen signed up for Booktopia. Hooray!

Katie- The good thing about the Bean Trees, (why I squeezed it in), is it's length. Just over 200 pages. A perfect tweener book.

Hi Mark,
I have read many of the Kingsolver books, probably Poisonwood Bible the one I liked the best but remember reading her early books ages ago and really liking them too (the Arizona ones). I was given one of hers when I retired, a book of essays Small Wonder and I should read it soon because I really liked the person who gave it to me and think she would be a great book "recommender"! Happy reading!

The review of The bean trees was outstanding, and those quotes made me want to read it NOW! Good job, there, Mark...spraying the book bullets like they's nothin'. Yeah, good.

I shoveled! I shoveled! Sure, it was light and only 2-3 inches but it's an accomplishment and I did not use the snow-blower. Sticks out tongue!
Plus I listened to the most recent BOTNS podcast, (I waste no time, folks!) and received 2 book bullets. Ann picked Where’d You Go Bernadette?, which I know many here liked and I especially was taken in by Michael's choice: Little Wolves.

I love that cover and seem to have good luck with books with "wolves" in the title! Plus it sounds like my cuppa!

Hi Mark, great reviews of your last two reads. You've got me interested in Mr. Penumbra although I know the reviews have been mixed. And Little Wolves looks interesting too. Luckily I've already read The Bean Trees or you would have hit me with three BBs in one visit. That's just not fair.

123maggie1944
Feb 2, 2013, 3:46 pm

Mark, I'm waiting to hear what you think of Little Wolves. I just listened to the podcast from Books on the Night Stand (is that their name?, I am so forgetful) where he talks about this book and he did a great job making me think I might have to read it.

Judy- You are our resident western-lover, so I shouldn't be surprised you have read Jiles. I will try to bookhorn one of her books in. I really enjoyed Graceling last summer and have been meaning to get to the next book. "I'm planning on a cozy one with lots of reading involved." Sounds perfect!

Esquiress- Yes, the 75 is a very dangerous place. You need to wear Kevlar, although even that can be bypassed, with these sneaky BBs.

mdoris- Good to see you! I have a lot of Kingsolver to get to. Hopefully, I can squeeze in a couple more titles this year, although the competition is WICKED!

RD- Thank you for the very kind words. I am much more relaxed writing my minis, when I'm a vacation. While working, it's a bit tougher.

Bonnie- I can't understand the mixed reviews on Mr. Penumbra. It may not be perfect all the way through, but it's pretty solid, plus it's a book-lovers book. You know we like those.

Karen- I am sure it will be awhile before I get to Little Wolves but it is on the WL. I hope it's available on audio. Yes, it's Books on the Nightstand and it's wonderful.

This one is for Paul. He loves books, baths and.....gams. Squeeze in, my friend.

128maggie1944

I also noted that BOTNS is looking for someone who will volunteer to index the short stories. It would be such a shame if they did not have an index, and evidently it is too much for them to do. There may be someone amount your "followers" who would like to get some indexing experience???

hehe, I know a guy whose performance name is Nomex, he is an industrial experimental sound maker. Or something. It involves many microphones and records, and the odd drill or other frightening noise-maker.

Failed to dodge a book bullet: I've just reserved Mr Penumbra at the library...

So, the Superbowl is on this weekend? They're showing it at the cafe at work tomorrow lunch (presumably that's live) and will be serving chilli dogs. It may be quite an education on two points: I've never seen American football, or a chilli dog.

Feb 2, 2013, 11:58 pm

Hey Mark, all caught up here, methinks. I somehow ended up getting the entire season of Downton Abbey, even though normally iTunes only releases each episode after it's been aired on PBS. Strange. I've watched all the episodes save for the season finale, even though I wanted to hold off, but just couldn't do it. Consequently, I can't participate in any DA talk as run too high a risk of delivering a spoiler. Speaking of spoilers (not if you've been keeping up with the broadcasts) : I read somewhere that they dealt with Sybil that way because she wouldn't renew her contract? Is she crazy? Unless she got some huge offer from Hollywood? Anyone know more about this??

I'm strongly considering getting the audio version of Tigana to join along... do you think it's something I'd enjoy? I've had many GGK audiobooks on my wishlist for what seems like a very long time now... Meanwhile, I'm listening to Anne Hathaway reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to mesh with the FF spirit.

Mr Penumbra was on offer at Audible since it came out, and I was just now going to check it out, but seems they removed the audio from circulation on the Canadian market. How I hate when they do that! But then, there's no lack of great audiobooks to keep me plugged in!

Cheers and enjoy the rest of the w/e!

Good morning! Slept in a little bit. I do not do that very often. The vaca is rapidly winding down. Can't I just keep doing what I am doing? What's the problem with that, huh? Money, you say?.....Good point. Shuffles away...
We are invited to a small Super Bowl Party later, otherwise laundry, some chores and reading. I am loving Tigana. Yes, it's another chunkster but it moves along nicely.

Ellen- Glad you like the "gams". I'm a fan too! Enjoy your Sunday.

Karen- I heard that to, about BOTNS looking for volunteers. They have a big fan base. They'll find someone. Don't you like the hosts?

Megan- Good point about the absence of water. I didn't even notice that for some reason.

RD- Nicely said, my dirty-minded friend but oh so lovable friend!

Ren- Sorry I wore you out! It's one of the many hazards of LT. Great to see you. Visit again.

Tania- You should go and check out the game and have a chili dog. Bring your book and try to catch the lame, incredibly over-blown halftime show. I miss your thread. Anything happening over there?

136maggie1944
Feb 3, 2013, 8:48 am

Mark, I do like the hosts of BOTNS, and I hope I can remember to listen to their pods between now and Booktopia. I am also looking forward to finding out which authors will be attending in Bellingham. We are going to have a nice little LT contingent there, largely due to your telling us all to "get on board".

137msf59
Feb 3, 2013, 9:16 am

Ilana- Good to see you! And yes, give Tigana a try. It's such a good read and I think the audio would work just fine. Of course, that depends on the "reader" too.
So without divulging anything, how did you think the 3rd season of DA, compared? Honestly, with 3 episodes left, I think it's the weakest so far.
Maybe, you can see if your library system has the audio of Mr. Penumbra?

Deb- It opened my eyes back up, on Kingsolver's talent. I will read Pigs in Heaven and I would also like to look into her latest.

Karen- Are you signed up for all of BOTNS e-mail notifications? They do send out one a week, usually on Wednesday morning, as a reminder. If you have a chance, go back and listen to some of the earlier shows. I think I was mentioned once or twice.

^^I am on the lookout for a "daylight" reading lamp. My current reading light...sucks and it's straining my eyes. I saw this one on Amazon: Verilux Original Natural Spectrum Deluxe Floor Lamp. 150 watts from a 27 watt bulb. It's about a $100 bucks. Is that to low? I can't afford to go a lot higher.
Any suggestions would be wonderful!

Karen- That's way to many shows to sift through. LOL. But I would try to sample a few past episodes here and there.

140maggie1944
Edited: Feb 3, 2013, 10:36 am

Yes, it is true, too many podcasts to go back and hear them "all". I'll sample.

And that light looks like the very ticket! I think I paid about $60, probably on a sale, for my "knock-off" and I've yet to find any downside to it. Functions just fine for me.

And there may be some better choices? Let's see what our LT friends come up with....

Who are you rooting for in the big game? I'm rooting for the 49ers. I like that Harbaugh ever since I met him while waiting in line, like a regular person, at Walkers Bros Pancakes. Really down to earth.

Linda- I would like to see the 49ers take it, with that scrappy young QB, but I am not really invested in either team. what are your plans?

Esquiress- I think most of us on the 75 read a nice range of books. I like being all over the place. It keeps things spicy!

Ellen- Our living room on the first floor, gets a lot of natural light and I like reading there but this is my DW's domain. I am cast down into the Man Cave, one of my favorite places on the planet. I just need better light.

Kim- Yes, I like to fold clothes and watch the boob tube, but the TV will not be turned on, until later tonight, so I may not have a choice. What are your plans for the day?

Long day in the snowy trenches! I know: wah, wah! I'm a little tired and beat-up but I'll live. I did finish the audio of Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar. Once again, I can't praise this one high enough. It hit me on an emotional level many times. You should have seen the frozen tear tracks! I think Strayed is going to become a very important writer. She is on her way.

Julia- Big Wave!

Ellen- Did you see Carson make a face when Mrs. Hughes suggested young men could now be lawyers or doctors? The horror. I think that would make a great kitty name.

Joanne- So you think he's turning into Evil Mr. Bates? Serial killer? Poor Anna. I agree, there were several good scenes. I'm getting tired of the Thomas stuff though.

Tania- I am so sorry. I did not even have you starred. The shame. The blasphemy. I just thought you were not posting anything over there. I will be OVER! Big apologetic hug!

Hiya Mark! Sorry your vacation is over with, and just in time for some snow to fall on your workday. :( I have one of those lights, but I went the cheapest way possible - for under $20 I bought 2 "florescent" size light bulbs and a hanging-style "lamp" to go with it. I just lean it against a bookcase if I want to use it, and although it's crazy-bright that way, it does the job well enough for me. I still use just a strand of old white Christmas lights as my reading light, so I'm not a great one for an opinion on those lovely-looking OTT/Verilux lights upthread. As my Mom keeps warning me, one day I'll need glasses bc I read in 25-watt light, max. :)

^Of course I have never read this, but I found this very funny! I had a better day today at work and I'm off tomorrow. Yah, for Marky-Mark! I am enjoying A Reliable Wife. This is a very interesting novel and more expansive than I thought. I heard about all the intense SEX, but so far I think it's somewhat tame. WTH!

Laura- Thanks for the reading light info! What a little duct-tape and spit can accomplish! LOL. But I agree with your Mom, watch those eyes!

Joe- Thanks for letting me know about receiving the book! You don't waste anytime, do you? LOL. Hope you are enjoying it. I have never read Kafka or his stories. Bad Mark?

I am back home and I can say that Seattle was great! We even ate lunch (all six of us) at Salumi. The owner of the store, Gina Battali D'Amato, said that the businesses in Seattle are trying to figure out a way to get people to visit Seattle at other times of the year besides August. I had a great time in January and highly recommend it. You only have to have, what I call "light" winter clothing that is water proof and the winter isn't bad.

We had a great meetup on Sunday, January 27 with Karen and Ellen. They were kind enough to take me on a tour of the Capitol Hill area and return me to my hotel. Karen got books, and I got loads of books. I mailed back 6 boxes of books, so my total of titles in LT is going to grow this month. Karen was much more judicious in her choices of ARC's than I was. Poor Ellen choose a basketball game over the ARC's in the exhibit hall. Karen got to meet the LT Gods and talk to them. They were pleased that somebody took them up on the free pass to the exhibits. (I was wrong, the day pass for the exhibits is now $30.00, so it was a nice gift from LT.) We are definitely going to plan a meetup for Chicago this summer. I think that Ellen put up some pictures of the meetup on her thread and maybe Karen did as well.

I missed this last weeks DA episode because I was on a plane traveling back from Seattle and the only thing they offered on the TV on the plane was some stupid football game. I choose to sleep and read Life of Pi. It was midnight when I walked into my house and then I remembered that the Sybil episode of DA will be the only one I can watch from now on. I also will not be able to watch any of the Call the Midwife season because I won't have a TV. I also won't have a way to listen to my recorded books because I don't have a CD player in the house either. Darn, Dang, and Drat those nasty thieves. As, my sister said, I will just have to read a book. The only problem with that is that I can't read and knit at the same time. I can listen and knit at the same time, so once again, Darn, Dang, and Drat.

I was blown away by the Sybil episode of DA. I cried like a baby. That was good writing. Just when I start to get bored with this show it pulls out another stop. That is good writing.

I was also surprised by how life and my reading sometimes have some weird coincidences. Two weeks ago I finished reading The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory. This is a work of historical fiction about the War of the Roses. The book ends with the Battle of Bosworth Field in which Richard III was killed. I am currently reading When Christ and His Saints Slept in which the beginnings of the House of Plantagenet is the subject as is the Civil War between Stephen and Maud. When I woke up on Monday, it was to hear about the positive ID of Richard III's remains found in the city of Leicester. How's that for relevance?

I have Reliable Wife on my shelves. Mayhap I should move it up on the old reading list?

Linda- I liked Mary in this latest episode, but she has annoyed me a little bit this season. Nice to see them in the sack together, although they should look much more disheveled.
I did see that nightclub disaster book on the ER but I'm not sure I could handle another book about people burning. Yikes!
I liked that luncheon with Isobel too! And Robert couldn't ruin it at all.

Cindy- "If Carson would get laid. It would probably be all about him." You are probably right, but wouldn't that be a blast? And then he could start leering at the housemaids!

Claudia- During the blackout, we just drove home and watched the rest of the game, which was pretty exciting. I saved DA for Monday. Good episode. Sadly, only 2 left.

Hi Mark, I think they were trying to parallel Carson and Lord Grantham as two people who are soon to be things of the past. The world is changing and these two will be left in the wake. The scene at Mrs. Crawley's was just another sign of the changes to come. All in all it was an episode about the world changing.

I didn't particularly like the way the Dowager Countess wanted the doctor to lie but in the end it came out OK I guess.

Hi Mark! My boss was telling me that she saw an interview with the actor who plays Carson. He was telling a story about biking across Cambodia (at least I think it was Cambodia). Anyway, now whenever I see Carson, I can't help but picture him in cycling tights. It's rather disturbing, quite frankly.

Anyway, I hope you're doing well and your feet are staying dry at work. Lots of slush out there today.

"Benediction by Kent Haruf (Knopf). It has been 8 years since Colorado writer Kent Haruf published a novel, but we’re happy to hear that the author of Plainsong and Eventide will be back in 2013. Haruf is an expert at depicting small-town life, and this sounds like a powerful tale of faith and community. (March)"

Hooray! Yes, it's well known that I read A LOT of books. Plainsong still remains one of my "top reads" over the past 15 years. Let's hope this another GEM!

Benita- It's so good to see you! I've been wondering where you have been hiding. It's tough having a DA discussion without you. I really liked the way they handled the Sybil episode and now I hope they finish the season successfully.
I am so sorry about that break-in! Are you being reimbursed? SOON? What do you think of Life of Pi?

Linda- Those spoilers are destructive, aren't they? That's the problem with having them air in GB first. I believe Call the Midwife, season 2, begins Mar 31st. Plenty of time to catch up. Guaranteed you will love it!

Pat- Have you tried watching Call the Midwife online? It's also available on Netflix, but there was a LONG line for the 1st disc, which stinks. How about your library system? Try to find it, it is well-worth it.

RD- I heard that too! This show is running out of gas. How can you extend this to a 4th season?

Bonnie- Yes, you are right about the 2 dinosaurs. It's funny how even the Lady Dowager has kept up with the times.

Kerri- Funny, when I was looking for Carson images, I saw a couple with him on a racing bike. Now, I know. Go Carson! Yes, I am wearing my clumsy over-shoes, so my feet are staying dry. I'm off tomorrow, so I have a mid-week recovery day.

14) Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed 4.4 stars

“Run to the darkness, sweet pea.”

Dear Sugar: I do not read advice columns, online or in the newspaper. I never saw the appeal. I figured they were for the lonely and dispossessed, but when the writing is this damn good, I’m there all the way. Thank you- Eternally Grateful.
This book compiles a selection of Q & A’s from an anonymous (not anymore!) advice column featured on the rumpus.com. They feature the forlorn, the lost, the disenchanted, the disfigured, the abused and of course the heartbroken. Strayed answers with steely eloquence, like a tough, sassy, older sister, spreading advice, like a bouquet of roses and thorns. She pours herself and her own difficult history into each response, leaving the reader with a fat lump in the throat and eyes brimming with tears.
I think Strayed has quickly become one of the best new “voices” out there and I am looking forward to see where this amazing talent takes us next. Here is just a quick sampling of her replies:

“Don't surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn't true anymore.”

“Forgiveness doesn't sit there like a pretty boy in a bar. Forgiveness is the old fat guy you have to haul up a hill.”

“I can’t tell you what to do. No one can. But as the mother of two children, I can tell you what most moms will: that mothering is absurdly hard and profoundly sweet. Like the best thing you ever did. Like if you think you want to have a baby, you probably should.
I say this in spite of the fact that children are giant endless suck machines. They don’t give a whit if you need to sleep or eat or pee or get your work done or go out to a party naked and oiled up in a homemade Alice B. Toklas mask. They take everything. They will bring you the furthest edge of your personality and abso-fucking-lutely to your knees.”

**ETA- I did listen to this on audiobook and it was narrated beautifully by Cheryl Strayed herself.

Hi, Mark. I'm with you on Plainsong, and Eventide, too. Looking forward to his new one.

I read a whole lot of Zusak after loving The Book Thief, and thought I am the Messenger was his second best after TBT.

I'm sure wondering how they're going to handle the character of Death in the movie!

Tiny Beautiful Things is in my future. Thanks for being the advance scout. I love "“Don't surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn't true anymore.” And her comments about having kids are right on the money, aren't they? Including the profoundly sweet part.

Diana- Thanks! Love those days off, especially in the winter.

Mamie- So far I am enjoying A Reliable Wife. We'll see how I feel in the latter half. Wow, you have both Tigana & A clash of Kings lined up, huh? Both Big Boys! I would go with the latter, only because you could watch the 2nd season of GOT.

Morphy- So there's a Christmas Special too, for this season? I did not realize that.

Karen- I like the rotating day off. It's pretty easy to remember. Next week will be Thursday and then so on..I can see where it would be difficult to plan anything way in advance.
No, I did not receive the book and you did not have to do that, my generous friend.

Joe- I NEED to move up I am the Messenger. I've had it in the stacks for at least 2 years. Another Plainsong lover! Yah!
And yes, I can not praise Strayed enough. And she wrote this column for free!!

Looks like starting in August 2013 you are going to have all of your Saturday's off? I just heard Susanne Collins from Maine spouting off about it on NPR. She isn't happy about it, and neither am I. Of course, in Munden Kansas we haven't had Saturday deliveries for several years already.

We finally have sunshine down here. Last night was the most beautiful fog and this morning about 9:30 a.m. the sun came through the fog. Forecast is for rain tonight.

I am not going to replace the TV anytime soon. The thieves left my old TV (non-flat screen) and so I am going to set that one up. It works just fine but is only a small 15 inch screen. I won't be able to watch my favorite channel (PBS Create) but I will be able to see the regular PBS channel and everything up to the triple digit channels. That will give me enough to watch. I did not get a reimbursement and won't. I have insurance, but it is $500.00 deductible and the TV's and the cash stolen doesn't add up to $500.00. I will have to make due until I can pay for the TV. I am going to try to get my income taxes filed as soon as possible and use that to pay for the trip. That means that I might have money in May to buy a TV.

I told my sister that I was thinking of buying some kind of painting that would cost $1,000.00 to cover the TV. That way if somebody stole the TV they would have to tear up some high priced art to get to it. For sure that would be over my deductible. Is that a way of getting my insurance to work for me instead of against me?

Speaking of Cheryl Strayed, I finally got the DW to read Wild and she loved it. If you have not read this amazing memoir: Do so now! Thank you and come again.

Laura- So 3 1/2 hours of DA left, for those unfortunate enough not see the entire season yet?

Pat & Tina- Thanks! I hope I can snag a few readers. Like anything, this might not be for everyone, but if it's your cuppa, you will be thrilled.

I am at the 520 page mark in Tigana. About a 150 left.

Lovely review! Add my thumb, Mark! Having my two kids was the biggest accomplishment and sacrifice I've made in my life. Well, I suppose marrying my husband was pretty special too. I don't mean I really feel that I sacfriced anything in having my kids - I just mean that yes, you devote your life to them - for the rest of your life, as far as I can understand ( but it does get easier - sort of - as they are in their twenties).

As for DA - ha! I'm only 1 1/2 episodes into the 2 nd season! Lots more for me to go!

Wonderful review of Tiny Beautiful Things Mark. You are certainly a fan of Strayed's work which means I need to start reading her books. I haven't read any of them yet and she apparently cranks them out at the same rate as James Patterson LOL.

I'm with Joanne...we absolutely love Doc Martin and have watched all episodes three times (4 seasons have been recorded so far I think). And last week we caught an episode of Land Girls that we really liked. Great Britain in the WWII years and set on the farms that were prevalent at the time. (The Women's Land Army) It reminds me of The Lost Garden which I loved.

Chelle- Thanks! Strayed mentions her kids and motherhood many times in this book. It's always positive but in no way does she sugar-coat anything.

Bonnie- Try to find a copy of "Wild" and start there. If it's not your cuppa, then you'll know. I am not sure I have heard of Doc Martin. I'll keep an eye out. Nothing is better than that LT Radar!

Yes, Doc Martin is British. Martin Clunes plays a surgeon who suffers from a sudden aversion to blood and so he moves to the small Cornwall town of Portwenn (it's filmed in Port Isaac) to be their GP. It's very funny and sweet. And it's on Netflix instant. Like Bonnie, we can watch it over and over again.

I've already preordered Benediction. :) I hope to catch Haruf on his book tour.

mdoris- Make sure you stop by and let me know what you think of "Wild". It's a perfect place to start with Strayed.

Joanne- I will watch for Doc Martin. I think I trust my LT pals over anyone else. No, I do not think the end of Saturday delivery will help anything. It will just make us weaker. It's a big mistake.

I have never heard of Land Girls or the Doc Martin show. But, was the Doc Martin show a book? Seems that I have heard this plot somewhere and for me books are most likely the place.

Just wanted to let you know that I entered my 2000th book in LT today. I got quite a haul in Seattle. Karen was much much more conservative than was I. I didn't help out the post office with all the books I collected. I mailed them back using Media Rate. Media Rate, for those who don't know, is wonderful. It is a cheap way to send books anywhere in the U. S. It is so cheap because it is mandated by law. That part of the post office law is one thing I like, but it costs the post office money. In this law the post office has to send media at a very cheap rate because back in the early 2000's they were going to base the rates on weight. Books weigh a ton, so libraries and schools protested loudly and Congress heard. They added the nice media rate into the post office law as a result. As the postal employees at the ALA conference told me, the post office was there as a public relations gig. Not as a money making gig.

Once ALA forced us to send stuff using Fed Ex. Librarians immediately told ALA that was a no-go. I shipped one box via Fed Ex and it cost $40.00. I sought out the nearest USPS office and mailed stuff from there. It didn't matter if I had to walk a few blocks. No Fed Ex or UPS for me when it comes to books. Or much of anything else, either. I still mail my bills using stamps.

Has anybody here read any of the Stuart MacBride books? The publisher is releasing all of them in the U. S. starting in March and they were really touting him as an up and coming mystery writer. Should I start reading his books now?

>242 lindapanzo:: Here in Pennsylvania, USA, we're hearing about an impending Snowpacalypse that's supposed to start some time tomorrow and bury us in up to 1.5 feet of snow. I'll believe it if I see it :)

BTW, it is not that I am so much more conservative (perish the thought) (I'm a left of liberal from the golden days of nonviolent protesting) person when it came to books from the ALA, its that I have only two arms, and nearly no strength. The ALA, the bad bad guys, prohibited wheeled carts the like of which we little ole ladies like.

In any case, I got plenty of new books and I'm still admiring them and looking for the best place to put them in my many book shelves. I think I'm going to sell some old cook books.

This is The Onion's take on the latest USPS announcement. Pretty freakin' funny (skip it if you are offended by strong language):
http://www.theonion.com/articles/postal-service-and-wait-until-you-cocksuckers-s...

Linda- You poor guys. We are only supposed to get an inch or 2, which of course is just fine with me.

Benita- I am going to look for those 2 British series too. I had never heard of either. I have not read MacBride but I have cold Granite in the audio stacks. I know Paul has read him.

Esquiress- OMG! No Snowpacalypse! Good luck! I hope it's not as bad as they are predicting.

Karen- Good luck with your book-organizing. I hope to attend the Chicago ALA. I'm sure I will be bringing home books too!

I saw this and thought of you - more likely you have ear buds in your ears and not a pony tail. :)

And I know it's not about the money. Especially with the pension funding, it's all about how best to disband your Union and privatize mail delivery by making the whole operation seem like a bad deal so some private interest can pick up the service for cheap and make out like bandits...

A friend of mine lent me a book called Unsaid, a few weeks ago. She loved it, but...Has anyone here read or heard of it. Cute cover:

Hey, I'll give it 50 pages...That sounds awful snobby!

Joanne- Good cartoon. Thanks! Yep, things are changing for the P.O. I am hoping for 5 more years, for myself. Fingers crossed.

Roberta- Yep, they don't call me a sharpshooter for nothing. My job is done. Have a great day.

Ha! My previous post man wore a fabulous straw hat during the summer! Since my mail goes to a community mailbox, I think I have a mail lady right now. I liked my straw hatted fellow -he was chatty and friendly! Said he loved the route.

As for DA - oh yes, I am very drawn into it. I'm part way through the second season. Not too far -but err - no spoilers but Matthew is not all in one piece , as it stands. We had temps in the 40 F today and it was sunny! Great weather today and tomorrow - or so they tell us.

I got a copy of Cold Granite at the conference so when you listen to it, let us know how it went. said with a wink. (like you don't ever post your reviews. Duh!) I will be turning the pages of other novels until then.

Hi, Mark. Hope it isn't too icy out your way. It was like walking on a long skating rink in our part of town. Happy Friday! The Miniature Wife and Other Stories felt like magazine article length after working my way through A Memory of Light. Now I've started the RD-recommended Volt collection of short stories. Not sure how this happened; I don't read short stories all that often, but you both are persuasive.

Joe, I think you got more freezing rain than we did. Up north, this was our heaviest snow since the Groundhog Day storm two years ago.

On the other hand, I got to work (same county) and there's virtually no snow here. Maybe 2-3 inches. It's pretty amazing.

258maggie1944

Our weather expert on public radio said, sadly, the northeast might be due not only for this big storm, but another one could easily develop in about a week or two. Horrid weather!

Made me wonder if all those people who ask "how can you live where there are earthquakes?" are also asking, "how can you live with such horrible winter weather?" I guess we all have our weather burdens,

I think they're backing off to only a couple of inches now. But if I could curl up with Graceling and not have to go anywhere this weekend, I'd be ok with that, despite missing two D&D groups if that happens. The game can go on next week :)

>257 lindapanzo: It is amazing, Linda. I was just talking to a co-worker who lives downtown, and he didn't have freezing rain or snow. We've had this happen before - Chicago covers so much area, we get different weather in different parts of it.

I'm in a kind of summertime mood. Enough with the cold, snow & ice. Books & beehives! What a heart-warming combo! And what a cute dress!

I finished A Reliable Wife. I did not care for the 2nd half. Relentlessly bleak. I didn't enjoy plowing through the snow, gnashing my teeth. I like "dark" but come on!
I did start Oryx and Crake. What an amazing writer she is. I love this woman! But please don't tell Cheryl Strayed. Let's not have any cat-fights.
And 30 pages left on Tigana, which has been terrific.

Hi Mark! Did you survive today? I think I got around 5 inches of heavy, wet stuff here, but was all done long before my very nice mail lady, Pam, came through to deliver bills. Ugh. I'm ticked about no Saturday delivery (when does that go into effect, BTW?), but you could see it coming from a ways away. Bummer. I love my PO, and all of my carriers. Not a crabby or mean person in the bunch!

Did you ever watch Lark Rise to Candleford? It might be a bit too feel-goody for you, but it was another excellent BBC series I enjoyed, and I can't remember if we've talked about it before or not. Doc Martin is great, as is Land Girls, Black Books, The Book Group, Love Soup, The Vicar of Dibley, and MI-5/Spooks is great too. And of course, there's Midsomer Murders, Poirot, Miss Marple, Inspector Lynley, Pie in the Sky, Jonathan Creek, ...... Geez, I hardly watch any British TV at all! ;)

Hope you've got some good food, great beer, and excellent books to keep you (and Sue) company tonight!

Deb- "I liked my straw hatted fellow -he was chatty and friendly!" Sounds like a good guy. I do not have a straw hat but one of those plastic-webbed sun helmets, which I have started wearing. I no longer care what I look like. Super dork or not. It's about comfort and safety.

Linda- Wow! I think we received an inch at most, but it did make everything icy, crunchy and slippery. A little tricky walking. I hope you guys dug out and can now enjoy your weekend.

Donna- "Sounds smart to me, Mark." Thanks for the condolences. LOL. My friend and I, have swapped books for many years. She has good taste, so I do trust her on this one. We will see. She did love the shack though. OMG!

RD- I like the dog image too, reminds me of my Bailey girl, but let's hope what's in between those covers, is worthy too!

Benita- I'll try to bump Cold Granite up. Maybe I can get to it next month. Can you hold out?

Joe- It was icy today. Maybe not a lot of added snow but what came down froze solid. I'm so glad you enjoyed the Miniature Wife. Is Volt from the library? I had that one on my WL too, thanks to RD.

Karen- It does not sound good for the North East. That really stinks for them!

Esquiress- A few inches sounds much better. I hope that's all it is. I also hope you have a great weekend and get plenty of reading in. Graceling is a lot fun.

Morphy- You don't care for chocolate labs staring at you?

Pat- I sent that Onion article to a bunch of people at work. Big laughs. Although there was an article on the editorial page of the Chicago Tribune praising the P.O. for making that move. Not so funny.

Laura- I appreciate all the Postal love! I try to be a good carrier and have a nice relationship with my customers. I get to joke around with many of my business customers, who I see regularly.
Thanks for all the TV show recs. I will start looking for them. Enjoy your weekend.

Mamie- I really wanted to like a Reliable Wife. I think it began very well but all those characters wallowing in misery became just to much. I have heard very good things about his latest, so I might still give that one a try, just not right away. LOL.

Love that beehive, but I'm still looking for the dress and... nope, can't find it anywhere. Are you sure she's wearing one? ;-)

Followed your suggestion and tried to see whether they had Mr. Penumbra on audio at the library here, but no. Oh well. Not like there's a lack of books for me to listen to.

As a matter of fact, I did get Tigana and will get to it at some point this month. But for now, I finally got started on Anna Karenina and will alternate between the book and the audio version I have so it doesn't take me the rest of the year to get through. At least, that's the plan.

I'm off to start reading A Monster Calls now.

Happy Saturday, kids! A typical cold day but at least it will be dry. I only have a few pages left in Tigana and then onto the untested, Unsaid, those dark unknown waters, without the trusty LT Safety Net. Wish me luck. Looking forward to Sunday!

Claudia- You got so excited you double-posted! Bless you. No lamp yet. Probably early next week. Is Tigana bogging down for you? Sorry to hear that but I encourage you to hang in there. I thought it remained pretty consistent. It's a big epic fantasy book that takes it's time.

Ilana- If you look very closely, you can see the dress she's wearing. Remember, it's very warm out and she's trying to be comfortable. Poor thing.
Maybe Mr. Penumbra will become available on audio, at some point. Fingers crossed. I think alternating between the print and audio on A.K. is a very smart idea. I'll be watching for your thoughts on A Monster Calls.

I'm done! I'm home! It was mostly sunny today, which was nice but still very icy in spots. I had to deliver mail properly and stay riveted to the wonderful Oryx and Crake, while negotiating treacherous stairs and sidewalks. Who said, I can't do 2 things at once?
Hey, no complaints from me. The people in the Northeast have it a thousand times worse. My thoughts and prayers are with them. Yikes! At least they have the weekend to dig out!
I also finished Tigana, which I really enjoyed and found another fantasy author to follow around.

Deb- You are very cruel, Tonto! I thought you were my kind & faithful sidekick? It is supposed to be in the mid-40s tomorrow but rain is moving back in.

Kath- How bad did you guys get hit? Hopefully, it wasn't terrible. I don't use the ice-cleats. Some of my cohorts swear by them but I haven't tried them yet.
Yep, something ended up really bugging me about a Reliable Wife, especially in the latter half. I know you really liked it. I would still like to try his latest book.

Morphy- Boobs? There were boobs up there? Oh, those...sorry I saw the beehive and the book.

Chelle- Snow free this weekend. Just seasonably cold. Warmer tomorrow and rain moving in. Hope your weekend is going well too!

Paul- I knew you would appreciate "our bouffanted gem". It must be nice to be able to turn pages hands-free. Nice bookmarks too!

Lynda- "we know you intentionally overlooked the fact that the duo is actually a trio." Nope, sure didn't! No contest with the Grammys or DA. I don't like the Grammys. I love music but those awards have nothing to do with what I like. I just hope I can stay awake for a 2 hr DA!
