I got next to no reading done this past week, which has been one of the more awful in recent remembrance. Pretty much, if it was not a textbook, it did not get read. Actually, I just finished this book a few minutes ago so I would actually have something to report for the week!
#21: The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle - I enjoyed this fantasy novel quite a bit; it is the story of a unicorn who goes looking for others of her breed, fearing that she is the last of her kind; she stumbles across Schmendrick the magician (and not a very good one) along the way; I was enchanted with this book from the first word to the last - I thought it was magical; Highly recommended (4.25 stars) Library Book
My only acquisition this week was The Bolter.
Games played this week include Conquest of Planet Earth, Legends of Andor (my husband even joined in with this one, a surprise!), A Touch of Evil and Elder Sign, Beth's favorite.
Hopefully this coming week will be a little easier for me and I can actually make an appearance in the threads again!

What a darling pair your great-nieces are, Stas. And I do so like that big grey owl watching over them as they sleep.
Thanks for the recommendation of The Last Unicorn. I'd been meaning to get a hold of this copy but somehow forgot, so thanks for the reminder.

Hi Stasia, it seems things are going well for you, although busy. But that's school. I have not had much to say on your thread so far, but I've been visiting from time to time.
Cute kids your nieces.

Good Morning Stasia, Hope all is going well this weekend for you. Love the pic's :) they are adorable.

Hello Stasia, finally back on LT. I love the photos of the twins - adorable, beautiful just lovely :)
Your comments on your last thread in regards to The Black Company made me wonder if I should give them another go as well. I read the book a few years ago and couldn't quite get into it either. However, I have put the book back onto my TBR.
Wish you a lovely Sunday :)

#3: That owl is great, isn't it? I would love to have one of my own. I hope you enjoy The Last Unicorn when you get to it.
#4: Do check out The Last Unicorn, Lynda! It is worth the read, even for nonfantastical people ;)
#5: I am not sure when I am going to get to it either, Charlotte. Probably some time over the summer maybe?
#7: Thanks for stopping by, Manuel!
#8: I think the twins are adorable too, Monica - but I might be just a wee bit prejudiced.
#9: I would be interested in seeing what you think of The Black Company if you give it another shot. I think the first time I tried to read the book it was just not what I expected, so it was easier to read this time around since I knew a bit more about it.
#10: Thanks, Darryl - but frankly, I am glad they are not "mine." Honorary auntdom means I can give them back to their parents when they cry :)

Adorable babies, Stasia.
I read The Last Unicorn in the dim past, to make sure the kiddo could read it; odd--I rarely pre-checked her books and often left things lying around that were perhaps a tiny bit above her head.

All caught up, Stasia, and boy, was I behind! I love the picture up top and the one from your last thread of those adorable girls - so sweet. Thanks for sharing them with us! Hoping your Sunday has some form of relaxation in it for you, and that it is full of fabulous!

Love the picture of the twins. The Last Unicorn has been on my wishlist for sometime. When I am done this class, I have some serious catching up to do at the library!! Thank you for the reminder!

Beautiful photo of beautiful twins!
I have never read The last unicorn either, but have been aware of it for years... one more on the virtual TBR pile (as distinct from the ones I actually have piled up and waiting already).

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the twins. I will pass them along to Levi and Carissa.
Well, midterm grades are in. I am actually surprised at how well I did, especially on my Civil Law exam. I got a 94 on it and a 90 on my Law Office Management midterm. The first two parts of my LOM final project were due last week as well, and I received a 98 on that. Whew! I have to tell you though, I cannot wait until this session is over!

As a twin who gets to speak to my other half most days Stasia it is always a pleasure to see new additions to our fraternity and the two little beauts adorning the top of your thread are certainly fine additions.
Congratulations on your new thread. I am a bit worried about your book delivery as I noticed that I got your zip code mixed up. Hopefully it will found you ok.

Oh your nieces are so darling, Stasia!!It makes long for the days of yore, when my two sons were young -but not too much -as I well remember those overnight feedings and a lot crying.... But oh they are cute! Some days I think my dog is nearly as much work as a toddler! Honestly!

Well done on your fine grades, Stasia! And I totally agree with you about the joys of honorary aunthood and giving them back at the end of the day and going home!

#34: Yes, Kerri, I am really switching schools. I have decided to go for a 4-year degree instead and that is not an option in my current school.
#35/36: Thanks, calm and Bianca!
#37: Paul, I will be sure and let you know when I receive the book. Again, I much appreciate you sending it my way - whatever it is. Did I know you were a twin? I do not think so.

Congratulations on the grades, Stasia. Is transferring going to cost you credits? Bummer if you suffered through courses that won't carry over, especially if you have to suffer through more of them because of it! Those babies are so sweet...and don't they have the life, though? Hope you get to enjoy them lots, and that you find more voluntary reading time soon.

Well, other than the fact that I am now in another one of my 'I do not want to read anything at the moment' stages because of schoolwork, I had a good reading week.
#22: A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr - I recently acquired another of Carr's books and thought it high time to read the other one of his that I owned and I am glad that I finally (after 4 years of ownership!) picked this one up; the story begins as Tom Birkin, a survivor of the horror that was WWI, makes his way to the town of Oxgodby to work, in his job as an art restorer, on a painting that has been covered up by whitewash through the years; I have no idea if Carr meant it this way or not, but I the painting, to me, became a metaphor for the healing going on in Tom's life over the course of the summer as he works on it, peeling away the layers, fixing the damage and allowing the brightness of the color to shine through again; Highly Recommended (4.25 stars) Mine
#23: Wild by Cheryl Strayed - nonfiction; I was very glad my local library final got a copy of this book after all the wonderful reviews I have read here on LT - and for me, the book lived up to the hype; the story of Cheryl's freefall after the death of her mother, the dissolution of her marriage, the break up of her family all rang true - her idea to hike the Pacific Coast Trail as an antidote, as a journey of self-discovery, made sense despite her basic ignorance of what she was letting herself in for; Strayed does a great job of telling her story and telling it well; Highly Recommended (4.5 stars) Library Book
No new acquisitions this week.
My husband has joined in the game playing with Beth and I but, since he is tired when he gets off work, we only play for an hour or so of an evening, so there is a slow down in the number of games being played. We played both Legends of Andor and A Touch of Evil this past week.
I am starting week 6 of this session. I will be extremely glad when it is over. This has been the toughest session yet and my instructors have not made it any easier.

Happy Sunday Stasia. Although many people have raved about Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail I had not wishlisted it until now. It looks to be an interesting road trip sort of book which I so greatly enjoy.
Hope things improve as you approach the end of this session.

So glad you loved A Month in the Country; I thought it was a wonderful book but have yet to read anything else by Carr. Some years ago, in one of The Best Essays of . . . series, I read an amazing one by Cheryl Strayed that was about her reaction to her mother's death, with a very brief mention of how her hiking trip saved her. I will probably read her book someday, but the essay was so condensed and so piercing that I am almost aftraid to read a longer version.
Sorry that your instructors are making life hard for you, but I am sure you will do very well (as usual)!

I'm sure Carr did mean the restoration of the painting to be a kind of parable or metaphor for the healing that was going on for Tom. Lovely book! I must read it again one day...

Stopping by to say hi, Stasia! Ah, kids 18 months apart! My mom managed to have me and my sister 9 months apart in the same year -and she was still game for 3 more kids! I had a 3 year apart plan, but you know how it goes - turned into a 5 1/2 year gap for our two. Congrats on going further on in school!

Hi Stasia!
Congratulations on your mid-term grades - very impressive!
As a child I picked up The Last Unicorn - I confess I had a thing for unicorns at the time. My mother told me that the book wasn't what I thought it was - and since she rarely steered me away from any book I not only didn't read then, I've never picked it up as an adult! In fact, it's the only book I can remember her encouraging me not to read....
I have A Month in the Country sitting on the shelf - it's time I read it!
The Bolter sounds fascinating - I may have to give it a try. I very much like Love in a Cold Climate.

#86: I have not yet had a chance to read Love in a Cold Climate although I am itching to. My local library does not have it though.
I will not be on LT much for the next couple of weeks. My session is winding up - final projects and final exams are due next week, believe it or not - so my reading, which was slow any way, is now at a standstill.

Hi Stasia! Just popping in to say hi! I hope the end of the term went well (I'm sure it did.)!
113PaulCranswick
Stasia - hope to see you back, refreshed and buzzing soonest - sorely missed.
116alcottacre
I am still alive, but barely kicking - and doing no reading whatsoever outside of my course work. (Although I did sneak in the new J.D. Robb book on my one day off between classes.) I survived finals and that is the best that can be said about my last session. My current session has already started with a bang: 3 chapters to read, 2 quizzes to take, and 2 activities to do in the first 3 days of class. This week's work load does not look to be much better. Sorry, but it looks like I will not be around much for the next 7 1/2 weeks or so.
118rosalita
Hang in there, Stasia! You can do this! Just know that even if you are not visiting LT much, you have a big support group here cheering for you.

I seem to have misplaced your thread too, Stasia. So, happy belated birthday, hope it was wonderful, and Happy Easter! Now that I've found you again, I'll have to be sure to keep checking back often to see what you are up to, though I don't have time right now to read the entire thread. Got to start getting ready for Easter. No, I don't do Easter eggs anymore, but I promised to bring something to my friends' where I'm going for dinner tomorrow, and I have no idea yet what that will be.
166drachenbraut23
Hello Stasia, a very belated Happy Birthday.
I do hope that once your course work is finished that we are going to see more of you! However, I wish you a wonderful and Happy Easter Weekend!

HELLO, PEOPLE!!
Stasia, The Free, here! Thank you all so much for your encouragement, your stopping by my (neglected by me) thread! I am officially done with school for a while. Now comes the battle to get everything done to get transferred to any 4-year institution that will have me :)
In the meantime, I am busily transferring the contents of the BlackHole from Goodreads (recently purchased by Amazon, the bane of independent booksellers everywhere) to LibraryThing. I have a feeling very little reading will actually be going on, but I will be wallowing in virtual books anyway.
Hopefully I will get caught up on threads a bit, get caught up on books I have put aside, get caught up on games I have not tried yet, and just in general come up for air.

Thanks for the welcome back, Roni! I have a feeling that with all the projects I want to get to, I will not have any free time, lol.
183alcottacre
Thanks, Katie! You and I still need to get together in real life one of these centuries :)
184avatiakh
Hi Stasia - I'm also looking at relocating my Mt tbr from goodreads, I will miss some of my RL friends from over there, though I don't really need to keep up with what they read. Anyway enjoy your free time while it lasts.
185susanj67
Stasia, congratulations on finishing with school for the time being! I hope all your transfers go smoothly.
186PaulCranswick
Lovely to see you back and buzzin Stasia for however long we have the pleasure!
187alcottacre
#184: I think it is going to take a while to get the BlackHole transferred, but I figure I only have to do it once! (Thank goodness!)
#185: Thanks, Susan. I have to wait until I have my final grades before I can start the transfer process, but I am hoping it does not take too long.

Good to see you again, and congrats on finishing this portion of your schooling! Can you use the bulk import tool for the BlackHole?
189souloftherose
Lovely to 'see' you again Stasia :-) I've also been considering deleting my GR account since their acquisition - I haven't used it for a couple of weeks to test it out and so far I really haven't missed it much.
190richardderus
To move the TBRs from Goodreads, create a csv file from your profile and then come here to import it. Ratings and data will come with it. I'm just so pleased you're done with school for a spell that all else pales in comparison.
192MonicaLynn
YAY Stasia, I have faith you will not have difficulties in finding a school that "will have you". They would be incredibly inept if they did not take you on as a student. Best of luck anyway and big hugs coming from me. I am proud of you!! Yay for a break too. It will be nice to see you on here more.
193msf59
Stasia is back! Stasia is back! It's so good to see you again. Hopefully, this means you can get back to the "fun" books for awhile.

I'm glad to see you here, Stasia! It has been strange without you. Good luck with the grades (Oh, that's silly -- you don't need luck there) and with the transfer.

199lindapanzo
Hi Stasia, glad to see you back here!!
200alcottacre
I have never tried to use the bulk import thing and have no idea how it works. Anyone want to enlighten me? It sure would be a lot easier than trying to put all 13,000+ books from Goodreads over here manually!
Thank you all for the welcomes back: foggi, Heather, Richard, Byrony (returning the hug!), Monica, Mark, calm, Nora, Linda, Kath, Rebecca, and Linda P. (I hope I did not miss anyone in there!) I have missed you all greatly!
I am not going to get a ton of reading done, at least not this week, as I try to catch up on some stuff in real life, but hopefully starting next week I can begin to get in the swing of reading something other than textbooks again!

Hi Stasia, I didn't read the whole thing, but here is Welcome Goodreads Members page that might explain the bulk import.
202lindapanzo
Stasia, I'm not sure how to do it either but there have been a lot of tips/discussions in the Welcome to LT discussion group for those new folks from GR.

That whole bulk imports thing has been a real let down for the people coming over from Goodreads I guess so I'm glad you figured it out Stasia. Congratulations on your success at school and good luck for the next step.
217DeltaQueen50
Great to see you here, Stasia. And congratulations on such an excellent mark, with the marks you have been producing, I don't think you will any trouble finding a school to take you.

Congratulations on finishing school Stasia! I wish you well on finding a four-year college that fits your needs.
And good luck with the good reads transfer. I know it's a headache.
Hope you have some time to play and breathe after the intensity of school.

#219, 220, 222: Thanks, Rebecca, Ardene and Heather!
#221: The only reason I spent any time on GR at all is because that is where I kept the BlackHole. At the time I started that list, LT did not have an option for categories. Then when LT did start with categories, I had thousands of books listed on GR. The whole transferring thing is just a pain in the patootie though!

Just catching up...
Hooray for finishing school with style! Good luck with applying to the new school.
I am never transferring my black hole from Goodreads (I suppose one should never say never). I just can't imagine it. I keep LT for the completed stuff. I also belong to several book groups on GR, so I'm there enough...

Thank you all for the support! You cannot know what it means to me!
I wish I could report that I am getting tons of reading done these days, but my 'reading brain' seems to be broken at the moment. I cannot read more than 30 minutes or so at a time and am failing abysmally at reading more than one book at a time. *sigh*

That's okay, Stasia. Your brain needs to recuperate from all the reading you did for your classes. It will take it a while to reprogram reading as entertainment!
239alcottacre
I certainly hope that is the case, Roni!
240cammykitty
Roni is right. I remember my brain being broken after finals week all the time.

Hi Stasia, here are some more belated congratulations for your fantastic (but not unexpected) good grades - you should have educational establishments falling over themselves to enrol you with results like that!
I'm sure the book-reading habit will come back, you just probably need to give the brain some down-time for a bit...

I feel your pain in transferring your blackhole from GoodReads to LT. I didn't have to do it since I found LT first, but I've had similar issues in other places. Its a suckish problem for sure.
