Half of 2014 is gone and we still have ROOTs to go! We are only 33 books off of being on target so let use those lazy days of summer and read at beach or sitting in a hammock or lounging by the pool!
I have placed a ★ for anyone who reached ½ of their goal. If anyone is 7/12 of their goal they got ★★, and two months ahead got ★★★ . This just signifies that you are on target to reach your personal goal if you keep up the same pace. Those without a ★ need to pickup the pace if we want to reach their goals.
Let's see the new Tickers sparkle with enormous proportions so that we dig deep and weed out those UNREAD BOOKS!

These tickers show the progress toward the group goal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to ask for your assistance keeping the totals in 2014.
Anyone with the ° symbol next to their name still need to add their tickers to the thread or need to remember to put their total at the end of the month in the progress thread.
Please post your personal tickers in the ticker thread or post your monthly progress here at the end of the month so that I can gather the numbers in one thread as much as possible.
I try to keep up on the personal threads during the month, so having to revisit to gather numbers can be a bit time consuming if the system is slow. Any help is appreciated.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are the totals for June. If anybody's number needs adjustment, please let me know.
If your name is not on the list, I couldn't find your ticker or personal thread.
So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!
Our goal for July is 2,665.
Three members - Squeakychu, daughterofheaven, and jen.e.moore had already reached their goals and earned a star by their name! In June they were joined by:

Yay, Cheli! Beautiful thread as always, and I am always astounded by the amount of work the record keeping must be.
Yay, everyone! A whisker away from being at 50% shows a lot of dedication.
And Yay, Me. **Grin** I got my second star back this month. I didn't quite finish my last book and wasn't sure which way Cheli would round the fraction of a book I needed to have the second star.
I was pretty ambivalent about the stars at the beginning of the year, but the first thing I checked on this thread was to see if I got that second one. So, for me, it's working!

Hi, Cheli, my total for ROOTS as of June 30th is 16, not 13. I deleted my ticker (which stopped working) from my personal thread, but could you please delete it from the ticker thread if it is still there? Sorry for the hassle, thanks so much for your amazing work!
6avanders
Woo Hoo! Congrats everyone!!
And Thanks again Chèli!!
>3 lindapanzo: sometimes I find that it's just a matter of finding the right book to get you in gear again... for me, that's often a YA, something that's a really fast read.... then when I'm feeling motivated, I can take on the heavier tomes like the Brothers K... ;)

Hopefully, not so many chunkers this month to get me back on track.
10cyderry
My total was small because I had three chunksters - Canterbury Tales I finally finished with 912 pages, Shadow of Night was nearly 600, and a Katharine Hepburn bio was over 600 pages but I managed to keep my star!

Dear fellow booklovers,
Id like to introduce myself back to this group. I have been rather inactive on LT lately. I wasn't feeling too good the last two month and could not even think about reading. The reason is a definite happy one: In February next year my husband and I will have become a real little family with a little newborn. :) I had some difficulties with sickness the last weeks Hand was rather tired. But I hope to be back soon and finish some more ROOTs. I'm sorry I let you down on our joint quest.
Edit: Congratulations to all who reached their goals already! Hand go go go to all who're close to reaching! You can do it!

Just finished reading The Prisoner of Heaven. I have added it to my ticker and will post a review soon. I enjoyed the book as much as I enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game, but I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it right after The Angel's Game. I let it molder on the shelf for too long.

I know the problem. While my purchases are no where near Cranswickian levels, just last night I bought four books at the local Barnes & Noble and I have placed orders with Alibris for 4 more.

>60 fuzzi: >61 benitastrnad: Yes, the buying of books is an issue. The piles always seem to increase even when I give books away. I started keeping a ticker of the books that I buy to see how many more come in to the house than the ROOTs that are read. I am not sure what I will do at the end of the year - maybe scare myself into buying less books?

Glad to see the group has been moving ahead, while I have been away on vacation - and before that spending a lot less time reading and commenting than normal due to work.
Vacation was great and luckily I got a lot of reading done, too. I will be updating thread and tickers over the next couple of days. Hope I can help get us back on track!

I'm not ROOTing much this month. I finished the one I mentioned earlier, and have a couple of others I'm slowly working on, but most of what I've finished lately have been library reads or books too new to count.

I must admit, the biggest disadvantage to having a book addiction is moving. I'm coming up on my third move in as many years and I am not looking forward to the number of boxes I'm going to need.

ROOT 25: Mason and Dixon. At times totally baffling, but I just trained myself to either reread until I got it or to close one eye and move on. Despite the difficulty, I really loved this one.

I just completed my 2nd ROOT for July & my 45th for the year. Five to go & I will meet goal. Yea!~! But I do not intend to stop there so I am hoping for 75 to 80 by year's end. That should help us with our numbers as I am not planning to change my goal but just to over it.
(I just realized that I missed one in June so will add it to my July totals which will then = 46. :-)

Well, I see that I am not alone in the activity of book buying.
However, I keep track of what I buy (or try to) because I have another personal challenge I call Bookshelf Booty.
In my version of Bookshelf Booty, I'm trying to remind myself that when books come into to my house they need to be read soon. My goal is that 75% of new books in are read in the current year. (This should help reduce the ROOT books for next year.) Hopefully, that will include the books that I actually purchased as well as downloaded to my Nook so that those books that show in my acquisition ticker will be read in timely manner.
This reminds me that I need to update my ROOT Thread.

I've been somewhat under the weather myself - it's been so hot and humid lately, that I'm actually feeling a bit nauseous. I've been keeping up with my reading though! ;) Anyway, I finished my 36th book on June 27th - Mind Games (Cassie Scot) by Christine Amsden.
My first book that I read in July was If That Looking Glass Gets Broken by Karl Drinkwater. This was actually a very, very short story (5 pages)! ;) Up next was The Donor (Part One) by Nikki Rae - part one of a three-part novella. My third book that I read in July was The Dancing Boy by Michael Matson. My fourth book that I read in July - 40th for the year so far - was a book that I finished late last night - The Last Ancient by Eliot Baker! :)

>79 cyderry: -- ooh I really like that name - Bookshelf Booty! 75% of new books read is amazing and inspiring. I would be blown away if I could reach that level of self-control!
I'm keeping a list of what I acquire, separate from just adding them to my LT catalog. The list somehow keeps it more in my face so I'm more aware of it and how many I've acquired and how many I have read.
I've kept the list for several years. I think it's a bit like starting a financial budget. First you keep track of everything without making changes, and then you decide if changes can (or need) to be made. I believe I'm definitely acquiring fewer books this year, although it's a bit hard to tell since I've acquired quite a few from my parents' library as we close their house.
I'm at the point where something has to give, so I'm culling and reading and trying to buy less. The problem is that I get a lot of pleasure from buying books my friends here on LT recommend and I feel my unread books are a treasure-trove. If only it weren't so much fun to go treasure hunting!

I'm at the point where something has to give, so I'm culling and reading and trying to buy less. The problem is that I get a lot of pleasure from buying books my friends here on LT recommend and I feel my unread books are a treasure-trove. If only it weren't so much fun to go treasure hunting!

My 2nd ROOT for July (13th for the year) is now read - Stephen Clarke's "1000 Years of Annoying the French". 3.5/5. I'll update my ticker but leave the group one alone.

>74 jen.e.moore: I know, that's rough! That's why I ended up getting rid of SO MANY BOOKS over several years.. finally had it pared down to (way too small!!) a "normal" sized library (for book owners anyway ;)) in 2011... We've only moved once since then (to a house we finally *bought* - so hopefully here for a while!), so hopefully that will help w/ the problem of moving ;)

We still have a week left to go and we are about 175 books from the monthly goal. There are a little 100 of us actively working on ROOTs and if we all finished the ROOT we're reading (I assume you are reading a ROOT) and then read 1 more, we could be back on target to reaching the group goal!
So sit back on the beach or your recliner or even in bed, and READ THOSE ROOTS!

Yes! I can do it! I actually have a slow down at work and some time off next week, so I will plow through as many as I can.

I've finally finished my second Root for this month Dying Light by Stuart MacBride.

How did you like that book. I have several of his titles and haven't gotten around to reading them yet.

@84 Yes, ma'am. I'm planning to finish my current ROOT by the weekend so I can get another one in before the end of the month.
I am wondering if my target for this year was over-ambitious. I'm starting to resent longer books, thinking "This isn't keeping my ROOTs on target".

Real life is interfering with my reading at the moment, I'm not sure if I can contribute significantly this month. I am trying, though, to finish my current ROOT. 150 pages of small print left...
91Henrik_Madsen
I'm still adding books read on vacation and plan on reading one or two more this month. Hopefully we will get back on track soon!

ROOT 26: The Good Soldier. Worthwhile just to try to figure out how Ford manages to establish a character's qualities only to sweep them away deftly in the next sentence.
I loved it, even if it made for painful reading.
ETA: I've updated all my reading on the group tickers as well as my personal tickers.

Hello there, everyone :) I haven't read too many ROOTs in July - only two so far. However, by the end of June I had read 64 ROOTs. I'm currently nearing the end of my third ROOT for July, My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira - which is such a sad book, but so good! :)

I finished one more ROOT (Vintage Murder) and may squeeze in another before the end of the month. Updated my ticker but not the group ones...

I think that when I reach my ROOT goal (just 5 more books!) I will take on a new challenge: reading the oldest ROOTS on my shelves. There are some that I've been staring at for about 37 years. Those that I read will be added to the Group results, and I will feel some relief.
I've recently reread part of Susan Hill's Howard's End is on the Landing, and I long to be able to KNOW these books in the way that she writes of, not just know their covers.

Everything I read on vacation were ROOTs so July is turning out pretty good for me. I hope to add a couple more before the end of the month.

Finished what will probably be my last Root for this month - The Darling Dahlias and the Naked Ladies by Susan Wittig Albert.

Read a ROOT yesterday! In avoidance of an ARC I'm reading (and not enjoying), I picked up a ROOT, so now I'm at 22/24! (personal tickers updated/left group tickers alone)

Just added another ROOT: Eugen Ruge: In Zeiten des abnehmenden Lichts which is a pretty outstanding novel on the history of a family in GDR.

Hi all. Apologies for absence. I have finally updated my thread and the group total. I have struggled to find time to get to the computer with one daughter and 2 year old grandson living with us. Reading pace has slowed but I have managed to keep this thread on target.

Finished Dave Barry's Greatest Hits last night. A little dated, but still funny.

I just finished my 29/30 for ROOT, and I'm hoping to get one more in today. I've chosen a book of short stories, and have not much else planned, so I think I will make it.

Something weird is going on with tickers--or is it just me? When I look at the group ticker of percentages in the July thread, I see my OWN ticker for another challenge. Does anyone else see this? I know that I have struggled with my tickers 'migrating' from my ROOTs challenge to my 1001 Books challenge.

So I'm at 22/24 now!
Personal tickers are updated; I never touch the group tickers.
I'm reading a ROOT, but I won't finish tonight, so those are my final July numbers.

>134 ipsoivan: No, it's not just you.
Do you go through all the stages and copy the html-code, when you update your ticker? That might explain why your 1001-ticker has accidentially showed up here. (If you had worked on your own ticker and didn't get the ROOT-ticker copied before pasting it here.)
If you update like that, it is more work than necessary. You can just click the ticker, login, update the numbers and press 'next' - then the update is completed and you can go back, refresh and check the number.

I recently wondered why it was fewer steps to update totals on the group tickers, then noticed that Cheli had set them up using a savings ticker rather than a counting ticker. I went into my own
ROOT thread and changed my tickers to be savings tickers as well, and suddenly they starting migrating to other groups I am in where I had set up tickers. Then this morning, I saw my 1001 Books ticker in the July ROOT group thread! The horror!
Sorry to the whole group--and especially to Cheli, as I fear that you will need to redo it. Perhaps I should delete my own tickers?

And thanks for the congratulations. It does fill good to be done, although I have a long way to go on my TBR challenge, which is why I tried to finish this early. For the TBR, I pledged to read a long work each month this year, and it's been a struggle. They are all quite dense. Next up, The Magic Mountain, I believe. I may be a while!

Yes, I came home on Friday to the news that there was no internet or TV. The guy from the phone company was here to fix it today but no luck. They are going to have to send the ground crew out. That means a whole long weekend unplugged. I am not sure why this always happens to the internet and TV. If it had been the phone I don't think my son or I would have even noticed.
