THIS THREAD is for LibraryThing Members, and especially for “beginners,” to ask help and learn about combining and separating specific LibraryThing Works.
-- If a book is combined with other, very different books.
-- If a book won’t combine with others just like it.
-- If problems with any Work are overwhelming, or maybe you just don’t have time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHEN YOU POST:
-- Please give Titles, Authors, hyperlinks, and other information that will help.
-- If you post multiple requests at once, please number each group. Examples:
“Please combine:
#1: The Story of the Life of You
http://www.librarything.com/work/AAAAAAAA
http://www.librarything.com/work/BBBBBBBB
#2: The Story of the Life of Everyone Else
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ ”
-- Ask about sets of Works or Series pages, ask for opinions, or ask for help with specific languages, subjects, etc.; but please be brief.
-- Please do not give Search pages, Author pages, or groups of “possibles,” unless you have a specific question.
-- “Someone will be with you shortly.” Most requests are handled by our fellow LibraryThing Members, not by staff.
-- If you add to a post, please use “ETA:” or “EDIT:” to show what’s new.
-- Please note when a request is “DONE.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES:
-- If two works have more than 200 records each, LibraryThing staff may need to do the combining. Please post these requests to: http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602 .
-- For information and discussion, but not problems, please see the Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 .
-- For the related wiki page, please see: http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Book_combining .
-- Please note Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for Contacting Members about Book Records at http://www.librarything.com/topic/30795#469616 ; if you contact another Member, please use Private Comment.
-- When this thread reaches 200 posts, please do not post here but start a new Thread. Threads under 200 posts load faster and are easier to navigate. Please copy these notes as post #1 of the new thread. Thank you.

Help, I made a terrible mistake, I combined two different works into one
paulstalder combined Soul Flame Soul Flame by Barbara Wood, Soul Flame by Barbara Wood, Green City in the Sun by Barbara Wood (see work)
http://www.librarything.com/work/785428
is there an easy way to undo that? (to separate 'soul flame' and 'green city in the sun'?) or do I have to separate the 405 copies one by one? I am sorry for that, any hints?

You have to separate one edition at a time. Not quite one copy at a time, but still a big mess.

*sigh**sigh* okay, I started undoing it, but I better got to bed now (it's midnight here)

I don't know how to do this but at this link is a book by Elizabeth G. Gleason:
https://www.librarything.com/work/6514663
i think it indicates that the book there is her only book. But I read her book Gasparo Contarini Venice, Rome, and Reform and have it posted on my site. Shouldn't her page indicate that she is also the author of that book?

Links help a lot :)
http://www.librarything.com/work/2483578/book/12046249
It is a "z" vs "s" problem in the spelling of her first name - which caused the books to show up on different authors pages. I combined both versions so all should look fine now.

The book now shows as being by both Elizabeth and Elisabeth, I think because both forms of the name are confirmed in the Other Author section. I'm not going to touch it because one name is last-name-first and the other is last-name-last and I don't remember which way is correct in that field.
19Schmerguls
Thanks, sorry to cause so much trouble. My record shows her first name as Elisabeth. If I entered it wrong, I apologize.

What's the proper way to assure a work has its primary author listed first? The Christian classic, The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom comes up with John Sherrill as the author. (John and Elizabeth Sherrill are credited on the cover.) http://www.librarything.com/work/2247/book/117761619
23SaintSunniva

I would remove ten Boom from the other authors on my copy if I were you.
25jasbro
>24 MarthaJeanne: Why remove Corrie ten Boom? I understood she was a co-author on this one with John Sherrill and Elizabeth Sherrill (who are technically, identified as "Contributors").
26MarthaJeanne
Because she is the main author. She doesn't need to be entered twice.
27SaintSunniva
>24 MarthaJeanne: - Thanks for pointing that out. I took care of it.

>28 bluepiano: The Disambiguation Note on http://www.librarything.com/work/12415577 says, "This is a mixture of film adaptations and books; please do not combine with either. If you own a copy of this work, please consider specifying either the author (if it is a book) or the director (if it is a film)." I've separated out and recombined most of these records that evidently belonged elsewhere based on their titles alone, but the combined copies in the remaining record are indistinguishable and inseparable except on individual Members' records. I would not combine them further on LT. Thanks for asking!
31jasbro
>30 bluepiano: No, it's more that we know little or nothing about the individual copies that comprise this particular LT "Work."
I think the copies that are left here oughta be combined, either with Baum's original Oz, or with one or another of its adaptations. The problem is that, with nothing more than this bare minimum Title and Author (i.e., no "movie," "DVD," "VHS," "film," "View-Master," "adaptation," "abridged," ISBN, or other, similar detail), the LT Member who first separated/combined records from this page (and who added the Disambiguation Note) just couldn't tell what all's included. And I can't tell much, if anything more myself. As of my last check yesterday, the cover images were the only further information that I saw -- and they still suggested a wide mix of adaptions and formats.
FTR, a book, its translations, and audiobooks, are generally one & the same LT Work, format differences notwithstanding. Any adaption -- abridgement, retellng, drama, movie, even pop-up books -- are different LT Works, the product of somebody's further effort (apart from straight reading). As such, we want to catalog, or separate & recombine, to group like records for the same product as a single LT Work.
Please let us know of other questions. Thanks again!

I'm stumped. Completely. I thought I had an easy case that would be a piece of cake to do on my own. I separated a few stray editions of a Lester del Rey book, including (at least I thought) mine, which were associated with The Sky is Falling, and moved them to the correct Double edition (being content to let the earlier Galaxy Double coexist with the later Ace Double, since their content was identical). The double novel even has a nice disambiguation notice:
This 1973 Ace Double contains both The Sky Is Falling and Badge of Infamy by Lester Del Rey. It was previously (1963) published by Magabook / Galaxy Publishing Corp.
The Sky is Falling / Badge of Infamy is the work in question. My own even says it matches in the Work Details:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1763548/summary/117957059
If I look at del Rey's works, it doesn't show that I have the book. I've recalculated author, title, and everything else I can think of, and I even hoped that somehow it would heal itself overnight. Nope. I even changed the "Lester Del Rey" to "Lester del Rey" in the vague hope that it would help (yes, I understand I was truly grasping at straws). Nope.
I really dread adding the old SF, sometimes.
I'm hoping that someone more experienced than I will be able to fix it, and to tell me what I did wrong. Thanks in advance, very much.

It shows on the work page that you are one of the members who own the book. I can't tell about the author page, though, without being logged into your account. Just for the heck of it I recalculated editions, so if that isn't something you tried before you can look to see if it made any different.
34Lyndatrue
>33 PhaedraB: Yes, I can see that I'm the most recent person to have added the book. I've hit about every recalculate button I could find, no matter how unrelated. I can't see any stray copies. I even looked in the related titles, just out of curiosity.

>35 JerryMmm: It's in my ordinary collection (Your Library) which is where all but one of my books are (in addition, sometimes, of the other collections). There isn't the green checkmark that says I have it, and even though the work itself says I was last to add it:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1763548
I don't have the option for "Book Details" on that book, if I select it from del Rey's books, even with my name being there. The book in my library has that same book id.
http://www.librarything.com/work/1763548/book/117957059
Here's an odd little note. It says 50 members have it, but I believe that it's 42. Some of that could be because a person has more than one copy (if I found the Ace Double, I might buy it, and that would look like two copies to LT). That's a pretty sizable discrepancy though.
I thought strongly about just deleting it, when I started to get frustrated, but I'd rather know what happened, and how to fix it. Every time I think I know what's going on with combining, I surprise myself with something like this.
I appreciate the help from you both, very much.

Okay, I'm not quite sure if you combine these two books, or what exactly one should do. These two books are the very same book, but the book was renamed a couple of years later. I know because I have read Patient Number 7 by Kurt Palka and looked the newly titled book, Clara , by Kurt Palka. Here is from amazon ca ( this a Canadian book ) . KURT PALKA was born and educated in Austria. He began his working life in Africa where he wrote for African Mirror and made wildlife films in Kenya and Tanzania. After moving to Canada he worked on international stories for CTV and GLOBAL TV, wrote for American and Canadian publications such as the Chronicle Herald and the Globe and Mail, and worked as a Senior Producer for the CBC. Clara (originally published in hardcover as Patient Number 7) is his fifth novel; it is a finalist for the Hammett Prize. Thanks for your help and here are the links to the identical books

Could you please help sorting out this author: there are some books under "Richard Weiner (unknown)" which need to be allocated to the other authors named Richard Weiner, but I don't see a way of doing it:
(1a) "The Game For Real" is by Richard Weiner (1) and should be combined with Hra dopravdy.
(1b) Assemblea generale is also by the Czech Richard Weiner, but this edition, judging by the cover, also contains a book by another Czech writer, Jakub Deml (check this out: http://www.poldilibri.it/pdf/Comunicato_stampa_Weiner-Deml.pdf)
(1c) Der leere Stuhl... is also by the Czech R.W.
(2) Mr. Nuts and Mr. Bolts is by another RW: the author should be separated out as Richard P. Weiner and is NOT the Czech Richard Weiner (1) nor Richard Weiner (3)
(4) Explorations in Subjectivity should be listed as EDITED by Richard Weiner and Raul A. Galoppe (as far as I can tell this is yet another Richard Weiner so should be separated out as another author until proven otherwise)
(5) Joe Montana's... is, as far as I can tell by yet another R.W., so a new author should be created here until proven otherwise
(6) News Bureaus might be by the same person as (5).
Thanks!

>61 kuuderes_shadow: Because each of us can only alter our own catalog records, I see no way to identify and separate this Member's DVD records from the corresponding books, then recombine the DVDs with other, similar movie records instead. If the Member were to change his or her cataloging (maybe to include "{DVD}" in applicable titles), we might have a basis to do something more. Otherwise, for the most part, their catalog entries for DVDs can only remain combined with the books as they currently are. I PM'd the Member to see if there's any interest, and whether I can help. Thank you.

I'm guessing this is a combining problem: I created a link in 15th post here--http://www.librarything.com/topic/190772--that for some reason goes to a Harry Potter book. If I click on the link to Mobile on Butor's author page I'm taken to the proper book. What's gone wrong? Cheers.

You didn't select the right touchstone target when the default one didn't turn out to be what you wanted, as sometime happens.
Some people probably had "mobile" somewhere in their titles or data for the HP book and its popularity probably led to it being offered first despite the apparent lack of a relationship.

Would somebody be able to separate out some books for me? I have tried but only managed to combine them all again:
The Yellow Wallpaper (Women Writers: Texts and Contexts) by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Thomas L. Erskine and Connie L. Richards, ISBN 0-8135-1994-2
This edition contains the short story along with 200+ pages of literary criticism, but has been lumped in with other editions.

Probably the best thing would be to separate anything without the full title.

Wouldn't the books with the same ISBN as mine be the same text? And if separated again, would someone re-combine them?

Help please.
Apologies for making what is probably a rookie mistake, but I've tried adding two short story collections, but they keep becoming merged together with other works of the same name. This happened during an import from Goodreads, so I went back in, removed all the erroneous fields and then started those two book from new as a manual adding of a book, but even though I put in its ISBN, LT is still merging them in with the similar named books.
https://www.librarything.com/work/1818/
Keeps merging in with the Anne Rockwell book, but the short story collection edited by David Vernon is a very different book.
Similarly, another one edited by David Vernon is getting lumped in with a non-fiction book about Cocktails:
https://www.librarything.com/work/6907863
Huge apologies for getting in a mess with this. I will go back and put everything right, but I need a pointer on how to ensure a new work is entered as a whole new indepdendent work and I don't know what I am doing wrong.
Huge thanks for any help,
Josh.

>150 shmjay: That is how it works. You can't combine anything with a sub-author.
What you want to do is go to the main disambiguation page, find the link on the left for improving the split then alias Jeffery Cohen 1 to the EJ Copperman page. Although, if Copperman is a nom de plume, it's a less than ideal solution.

Reason: They all are different variants of Betaal Pacchisi, a set of tales from Indian mythology.
Thanks a lot!

>164 sandeepkm: Do we know that the same tales are included in all these editions, or might the selection of tales differ? Unless they're the same, I think LT's practice and preference is to distinguish between any editions having different content, instead making Work-to -Work connections as we can. Thank you!

>164 sandeepkm: I'd be cautious with those.
Some of them look like illustrated children's versions, where illustrations from different artists could be a dominant component enough to be considered as different works, and where the texts would likely be adapted enough for them be considered different from each other.
Even the Francis Burton seems quite freely adapted rather than a direct translation.

Yes. These editions are quite different... as you put it "freely adapted" as comics, English translation, abridged etc. There are sufficient question on the exact number and contents stories of original work... coming up with most authentic edition itself is probably a big enough research project :-)
Fine with me if it make more sense to keep them separate edition. I will check the edition combining guidelines later.

I took on Wind in the Willows as a project last year, and ordered all sorts of versions from my library consortium to be able to compare them in person. If you've got a deep library system, and lots of time, and the inclination....

If You don't mind I have one more (last) quesiotn. How to enter co-authors to make work visible on their page.
Example here https://pl.librarything.com/work/15951772/workdetails/117942525 I entered them all as authors, but when I click on one of them (example https://pl.librarything.com/author/henelukasz)this work is not visible on their pages.

It looks like you only entered them in your catalog. You still need to into the Other Authors section of the work page and confirm them there. I think you should make them Main Authors that apply to all editions.

Today I entered 4 separate issues of this magazine: Spector Cut + Paste. The plus sign showed up in none of the titles till I went back & edited. Now, I checked on the series listing here http://www.librarything.com/series/Spector+Cut+%252B+Paste to make sure it was in order. It isn't. I thought I'd separate the 2 editions listed & delete the inaccurate one but the 'separate book' page shows both editions without the plus sign. What's the best way to get the series page put to rights? Cheers.
(sorry--I see I can use touchstone only with inaccurate title: Spector Cut Paste issue 1. )

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but I bet the + character in the series name causes problems.
184bluepiano
Almost certainly, or rather the lack of it. I'm wondering whether what seems to be a blocking of its use in a book's title should be reported as a bug--? What I'm trying to do is to get a series page with the proper magazine title so that those four issues will be listed on it. (If the character had been accepted the first time I entered the title, there wouldn't have been this problem with the series being based upon a wrong title.)

>188 DuncanHill: Hoo-wee! That's one for the ages! Honestly, I get that they probably should be separated, but have no idea of the Work(s) involved or whether and how they should then be recombined or reorganized. Series? Contained in? With knowledgeable guidance of where we're headed with it, I'd gladly help. Otherwise, I'd best leave it to others who know better ...
192MarthaJeanne
They are all owned by the same member, who is still active. I'll ask about it.

Those entries referenced in >188 DuncanHill: are all separate editions of different areas (I'm sure that you all knew that, but I'm a master of stating the obvious). They won't have similar information in them, and even though they make look similar to the auto combine on LT, they are unique. It's like combining all the volumes of an encyclopedia into one volume, or (as a better example) the historical collection by Will Durant and Ariel Durant into one work.
It's possible that there are multiple copies of a particular work, but I would think that only someone with a background in genealogical research should undertake this (and NO, I'm not volunteering).
Personally, I'd quietly tiptoe away from it.

They belong to Cairns & District Family History Society (@cdfhs)
The message I left there is:
This work http://www.librarything.com/work/15802043/editions has come to the attention of the Combiners Group. All the various editions seem to belong to you. Should they all be separated out? Are you interested in creating one or more series to organize them? Or would you rather just leave this bundle alone?
Have you looked at your work multiples page? http://www.librarything.com/profile/cdfhs/memes/workdups some of these look right, but others probably also could use separating. I'm willing to do some of the work, but it would be a lot easier if someone who knows/can look at the books were involved.
So if I were to take it on, it would only be with the participation of the genealogy people who own them.
