THIS THREAD is for LibraryThing Members, and especially for “beginners,” to ask help and learn about combining and separating specific LibraryThing Works.
-- If a book is combined with other, very different books.
-- If a book won’t combine with others just like it.
-- If problems with any Work are overwhelming, or maybe you just don’t have time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHEN YOU POST:
-- Please give Titles, Authors, hyperlinks, and other information that will help.
-- If you post multiple requests at once, please number each group. Examples:
“Please combine:
#1: The Story of the Life of You
http://www.librarything.com/work/AAAAAAAA
http://www.librarything.com/work/BBBBBBBB
#2: The Story of the Life of Everyone Else
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ ”
-- Ask about sets of Works or Series pages, ask for opinions, or ask for help with specific languages, subjects, etc.; but please be brief.
-- Please do not give Search pages, Author pages, or groups of “possibles,” unless you have a specific question.
-- “Someone will be with you shortly.” Most requests are handled by our fellow LibraryThing Members, not by staff.
-- If you add to a post, please use “ETA:” or “EDIT:” to show what’s new.
-- Please note when a request is “DONE.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES:
-- If two works have more than 200 records each, LibraryThing staff may need to do the combining. Please post these requests to: http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602 .
-- For information and discussion, but not problems, please see the Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 .
-- For the related wiki page, please see: http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Book_combining .
-- Please note Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for Contacting Members about Book Records at http://www.librarything.com/topic/30795#469616 ; if you contact another Member, please use Private Comment.
-- When this thread reaches 200 posts, please do not post here but start a new Thread. Threads under 200 posts load faster and are easier to navigate. Please copy these notes as post #1 of the new thread. Thank you.

It's all great, except that it should have been request thread #68 (the last one was #67)

One quick question.
I did typo with a book title. Later noticed that there were many 0 copy edition created. I presume one for each typo save.
Is it expected that each save with a different typo creates new edition?
Is that possible to purge to 0 copy editions?
And, should I place request here?

Yes, it's expected. Tim considers it a "feature". No, it's not possible to purge them; Tim considers them a "feature". So there's no place to put a request, I'm afraid.

>2 Lyndatrue: You're right, and I realized it just as soon as it happened. (Mea culpa ... ) It's happened at least once before, but I don't recall when, who or how we corrected it the last time. I have a PM in to one of our illustrious admins (@lorannen) for guidance on the corrections. I'll also try to follow back to ID the older corrected thread, and see whether it sheds light. Until then, I suppose we have #67 followed by #67. :(

Black Spring by Henry Miller is apparently combined with a book with the same title by one Christina Henry. There are reviews of her book among reviews of his and the work, while composed predominantly of his editions, seems to be attributed to her?
There is series info involved and I don't know how to handle that, so if someone could please take a look and separate the two works:

I think I got them all. The Christina Henry books are now http://www.librarything.com/work/16158950

That's great! Thanks.

>7 LolaWalser: Looks like @2wonderY fixed this one -- thank you!
More to the point, however, it looks like WorldCat has them incorrectly combined as editions or formats of the same Work; see http://www.worldcat.org/title/black-spring/oclc/876001796/editions?referer=di&am... .
I recall that some of us have successfully requested changes or corrections from Amazon. Does anybody know how to go about doing so with WorldCat?

I think this should be combined:
http://www.librarything.com/work/1705962
http://www.librarything.com/work/16160787/book/119792561
The cover on the first url is exactly like the cover of the book which is is on the second. The second lists the map drawer but I think both should be combined.

LT seems to think these two books are the same (same title):
http://www.librarything.com/work/2580100/edit/78704858
http://www.librarything.com/work/2580100/book/119879594
They are not the same. The first is a brief introduction to the man and his work; the second is a bilingual catalogue from an exhibition in Japan, looking at his work from a Japanese perspective.
Could they please be somehow treated separately? Thanks.

Hi, quick question:
https://www.librarything.com/work/12258035/editions
https://www.librarything.com/work/12258014/editions
There's a disambiguation notice, but as far as I can tell, it's just about the illustrations; text is pretty much the same. At any rate, they're messed up (both show the Sendak cover in search results) and should be sorted out, but my inclination is to combine.
What do you think?

26leselotte
>25 Jarandel: That's the question, though.
There are many works on here which have the same text, but different illustrations, even extremely popular ones such as The Velveteen Rabbit or Beatrix Potter books, all combined into one entry.
There seems to be no consensus.
So if the text is the same - shouldn't they be combined?

27PhaedraB
>26 leselotte: An ongoing discussion. Those who collect for the illustrations want them separated, on the principle that especially with a short text, it's the illustrations that are what's important. Sometimes it is simply because of the illustrations that it was published.
A good example is The Night Before Christmas, which has often been published to showcase an illustrator. Many of those have been separated on the basis of the importance of the illustrations.
In short, the core best practice is to combine, but there are case-by-case exceptions.

Hello, would someone please combine
http://www.librarything.com/work/525798/editions/120002232
and
http://www.librarything.com/work/2075516
Thanks in advance.
By the way--not sure this is not a problem on my end--there's a cover for the work in the first link belonging to some children's picture book (which also comes up in suggested combinations) but I was unable to flag it as not appropriate because I couldn't scroll down far enough. Don't know what that's about, but perhaps someone else could flag that cover.

>28 LolaWalser: It's one of the Amazon covers. Two copies have ISBN 0525472479 that to Amazon is known as that children's book. No one seems to have selected it as their actual cover on LT.
The error is probably that of those 2 LT user and possibly whatever source they used, not Amazon's so I don't think there's much to do about it, unless you want to get nosy enough to separate the copies to see who the holders are and message them, and maybe see the data source.

Please fix this if possible...I discovered when I added this book today, that there are 10 LTers who have it with the wrong author, due to similarities between the true author's name (Bro. Francis Mary Kalvelage, FI http://www.librarything.com/author/kalvelagefrancismary) and another author (Mother Mary Francis http://www.librarything.com/author/francismothermary)

41bernsad
>40 Schmerguls: You're right, it has no purpose but there is no need to combine it since most people will never stumble on it with no works attached to the ugly, double author name. There are hundreds if not thousands of similar multi-author names in the system with no works that are uncombined.
42jasbro
>40 Schmerguls:, >41 bernsad: Ideally, all these "ugly, double author names" will eventually be zero-copy records, since they don't reflect any one Author, and we continue to properly credit individual Authors and other contributors in their own rights. In the case of And Their Children After Them, Dale Maharidge and Michael Williamson each should be acknowledged as the Author or Photographer, respectively (which currently appears to be the case). Thank you.
43r.orrison
Another way to put it is that "Dale Maharidge and Michael Williamson" is not the same person as Dale Maharidge, so the two pages shouldn't be combined.

ETA: OK, that's what I can do for now. Individual Books 1, 2, 3 and 4 are each together, with coordinated Canoncial Titles. I also found two "Companion" volumes, which may be the same or different. Still to do: Authors, and compare the original and Revised Editions. (It appears Book 4 only appears in the Revised Edition, which makes me wonder how Books 1, 2 and 3 compare across editions. Still to do: Authors, and compare the original and Revised Editions. (It appears Book 4 only appears in the Revised Edition, which makes me wonder how Books 1, 2 and 3 compare across editions. Further separations, recombining and expanding on the Series may be warranted on that basis.) Please lemme know what you think, and thanks!

a lot of works with the wrong author. I changed the author and combined some of them with the right work (more or less 50), but there's still a lot to do.
Works with only 1 copy and a long title are the first candidates to combine as more general titles (i.e. Awakening) could include works from different authors

I have been working a bit on the Kindle one too. So far, I have tackled (most of) the titles with brackets in them. The majority of these could be combined with their appropriate works. I was planning to work on the ones with a hyphen next.

We do seem to have reduced it by several hundred, but with over 11,000 to go it will take a while. I have found other combining to do along the way as well.

Done. J Barth should not have been combined into the John Barth page so I separated it. Then the already split J Barth had the two authors there already separate so a simple aliasing of the one that had the Courtier volumes into John Barth was all remaining to be done.

You cannot combine in that case - you need to alias instead :) So when you tried, you combined the WHOLE author J Barth into John Barth.

Ludwig Bechstein is the author, Axel Scheffler the illustrator, and Julia Donaldson the translator. The primary author (Bechstein, surely) is listed in various members' books as any one of the three. I know changing the primary author on a work is considered a fairly big deal, but can this be sorted? Cheers.

You are working on Giles apparently today. I got a few more straightened out around the ones before but had not done my usual full blown search to match all possible :)

Someone got the Pandas before me but the Kangaroos in >207 MarthaJeanne: are now reunited.

211MarthaJeanne
It started out with various things combined (that should not have been), and a lot of others uncombined (that were scattered all through the author's page), so it feels like an accomplishment to end up with an orderly series. Many thanks to those who helped.
