We thought in another thread that it might be fun to play a Stephen King game and give clues to guess the character, story or book. First person to guess correctly gets to pick the next character and set the clues.

Since it was me who suggested it I've been given the job of starting things off and will start with an easy one.

Clue: I live with my mother in Derry and have a great sense of direction.

Would that be Duddits in Dreamcatcher? I'm reaching--I didn't keep that book and haven't read it since it first came out. :-|

3QueenOfDenmark

No, not Duddits and not Dreamcatcher. I'll give another clue.

Clue: I grew up to drive a limo.

Moving over from Name this S K? story...

Good luck. I tried to make it "win-able" but not too easy!

"Yes. Oh yes. And your soul as well. But you'll have your pride. That'll be left to you, at least. And isn't a woman entitled to her pride? When everything else is gone--heart, soul, even the man you love--you'll have that...won't you? You'll have that one coin without which your purse would be empty. Let it be your dark and bitter comfort for the rest of your life. Let it serve. It must serve, because if you keep on the way you're going, there surely won't be no other."

Sounds like it comes from a book with a strong female character. Is it Dolores Claiborne?

19CandiBelle

My first guess, and my gut guess is Insomnia.

If not I know this guess sounds weird but for some reason when I read the quote i thought of it being something Bobby's mom thought to herself in Hearts In Atlantis. Totally random.

20Madcow299
Jul 16, 2008, 6:40 am

Perhaps the creature in the painting in Rose Madder

21TheBentley
Jul 16, 2008, 8:05 am

No one has it yet.

A couple of hints. CandiBelle is thinking along the right lines in saying it's something going on in a character's mind. I didn't add the italics--they're original. She's also thinking along the right lines that it's not one of the "women's books," although I know it sounds a lot like one.

22jseger9000

Could it be Wendy from The Shining? During one of Jack's breakdowns?

23QueenOfDenmark
Jul 16, 2008, 10:40 am

I keep thinking of the name Susan while reading it but Im not sure if I am trying to make it fit Susannah in one of the Dark Tower books. So I am going to guess at Dark Tower 7 where Susannah is alone in New York.

42QueenOfDenmark
Jul 19, 2008, 10:52 am

Well, to give a clue, it isn't exactly a showdown because it isn't the main enemy (not quite the right word but I don't know what else to call it) and it doesn't happen at the end of the book.

85TheBentley
Jul 26, 2008, 10:36 am

The Stand?

I don't think it's necessarily a character who's come unhinged, exactly. I think it's referring to some kind of power--psychic power maybe--like the ability to call people to you? That's exactly the kind of metaphor King's characters use to talk about that stuff. I would almost think it's the Crimson King, but you said you hadn't read the Dark Tower books...

86CandiBelle
Jul 26, 2008, 12:13 pm

Sorry Madcow its not Roadwork, which I am still puzzled by. I just canyt wrap my head around it. The story is so random.

And TheBentley, its not The Stand. Thank you for recognizing that the Dark Tower books will be instantly omitted from this clue. I just cant put myself to read them until I have them all in my possession. Freakish mindset, maybe. But I just want them all right next to me. No room for excuses for not getting to the next book and forgetting what I read in the last ones simply because I don't have them at hand.

Very good. I didn't even think about that. This one is a good clue. It is nagging at me because I'm pretty sure, but not positive that I've read it.

It is a really good clue. It just sounds so familiar, but I can't put my finger on it. In fact, it sounds so familiar, I'm thinking it might be one of the new books that I've read recently--maybe Lisey's Story referring to Scott?

By the way, I'm surprised it wasn't Duddits. That sounds just like the dialog in that book...

#107 - Booksloth,

Hey, I doubt I'm right. I haven't been yet.

But anyway, the clue was: "Maybe he could only manage one lonely trombone then, but he's got the whole band playing now doesn't he?"

To me that implies something that starts out weak and is growing stonger.

In The Dark Half George Stark arrives (I'm trying to be vague on the off chance it may be a spoiler for someone) as a 'High Tone Son of a Bitch' right from the get-go. He doesn't really gain strength through the novel, does he? Maybe I'm not remembering right though...

Okay, most of the quotes on here offer an example of what a fine writer Stephen King is. This one doesn't really do that. Also, if it is too vague, lemmee know and I will provide clues. (One clue: This quote isn't as vague or random as it may appear.)

Here goes: "'Course you can't!" he snapped. "Can't see the hour hand move on your wristwatch, either, can you? Buggardly thing moves too slow to see... unless you watch it all the time..."

Yeah, beeg nailed it. I love that story too, though I knew my quote was either going to be too easy (if I gave a clue) or too vague (if I didn't). I knew when it was my turn I was going to use an old SK short story. I was looking for something from The Jaunt, but every other word in that story seemed to be 'jaunt'. Survivor Type was another one, but again, all the quotes seemed too obvious.

119Booksloth
Aug 2, 2008, 6:56 am

121Booksloth
Edited: Aug 2, 2008, 10:23 am

It's in Skeleton Crew (I'm 99% sure - my son seems to have pinched my copy at the moment) and I guess you have to have a very dark sense of humour to find it funny, though I do like to think King was crouched over his word-processor going 'Heh-Heh-Heh!' in manic fashion while he was writing it. Actually, I often feel that way about King. People rarely seem to mention him in connection with humour - or am I the only person who's that weird?

122TheBentley
Aug 2, 2008, 11:19 am

I always feel that way about Needful Things. When you read it, you can tell he had so much fun killing off Castle Rock...

123jseger9000
Aug 2, 2008, 11:35 am

Madcow,

Yeah, you do need to read more of King's short stories. I'd suggest starting with Skeleton Crew. That's where all the stories we've been talking about (Uncle Otto's Truck, The Jaunt, Survivor Type) come from. Plus you get The Mist. What's not to love?

124Madcow299
Aug 2, 2008, 12:02 pm

I have the mist as a seperate novella. I have read Everything's Eventual, and Four Past midnight, but those were both year's ago. I have been reading a more varied authorship and have stuck to his novels and of course the DT series.

166CandiBelle
Aug 8, 2008, 2:45 pm

So far no one has guessed correctly and i think its the first person narrative giving it a bad name.

"But he was lying about something. It was in his eyes...oh shit, it was all over his face, almost as if he wanted me to see the lie...see it and put a stop to it...because part of him was scared...so scared."

168TheBentley
Aug 9, 2008, 10:08 am

Here's what I'm thinking: The book isn't actually in first person, is it? You didn't add the italics. They were in the original text? And those thoughts as complete sentences aren't common in King. In fact, off the top of my head, I can only think of one book where the characters "think" in complete sentences like that, but I'm sure there are others. Is it The Dark Half? Maybe Alan Pangborn or maybe Liz talking about Thad...

169Booksloth
Aug 9, 2008, 10:42 am

Is it a Dark Tower book?

170CandiBelle
Aug 9, 2008, 12:34 pm

I did add the italics. The quote is straight from the text as you see it.

It is not from The Dark Half or the Dark Tower books. It would be easier to guess if you look at the content as a whole instead of picking it apart.

Its claws raked slowly down the side of its head, goring through its insect flesh and revealing the shining bone beneath.
