About Me

Hi, I'm Robin, and this is my 7th or 8th year with the 75'ers Group. I'm 55, and I've been married to Ed (55) for 27 years. We have two sons, Beckham (16) and Keegan (13), and four cats, Picasso (13) and the kittens, Mycroft, Bandit, and J'Zargo (1.) Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus (the capital of Ohio) has been our home for the past 20+ years. Our boys are involved in travel soccer and many school activities, and they keep us very busy driving them around. Beckham now has his driver’s license, so he can help with those duties now!

I just retired from a tax practice which I have run out of my house for the past ten years - prior to that, I was the Tax Director for one of the top 100 accounting firms in the US for five years, a shareholder in a small accounting firm for five years, and worked at Ernst & Young, an international accounting firm for 12 years where I headed the local tax compliance department. I have been slowing down my tax practice for the past few years to spend time with my boys before they go off to college. I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my days and I’m sort of at loose ends until I figure things out. I struggle with both depression and diabetes. Ed is in IT at Huntington Bank, a national bank headquartered in Columbus. Beckham is in 11th grade and is accelerated in math - he finished his high school math credits while he was still in middle school. He is currently taking Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses at one of our local high schools. Keegan is in 8th grade at a local middle school and is accelerated two years in math. He has been struggling with hearing issues since he was about four months old and has been wearing hearing aids in both ears since 2016. He has been diagnosed with dyslexia, but he also does very well in school.

I learned to read at a very young age and have rarely been without a book (or many) since then. My library on LT reflects those books that I have kept track of since I started as a member seven years ago. I am slowly trying to capture books I have read before that time, but I'm guessing that a lot of books that I have read will never be recorded as I have forgotten them. I am totally an addict, and the daily deals on Amazon for $1.99 will probably be my financial ruin. I just cannot help myself when it comes to a bargain of that sort!

I mainly read mysteries, science fiction, fantasy and children's/young adult books (along with my sons.) Specifically, most of the mysteries that I read are British mysteries in the style of the Golden Age of Detection, and I enjoy soft sci-fi, especially dystopian, a bit more than hard sci-fi. Until this past year, Beckham, Keegan and I read together every night, but it has been difficult with Beckham's course load to do this. I hope to start reading together again this year, but realistically it will be weekly, not nightly. In school, I never had to read many of the classics, so I am slowly going back to read some of those. I also try to read several best sellers each year. Additionally, I have been working my way through the Newbery, Hugo, and Nebula awards.

I proudly consider myself to be a geek (okay, maybe a nerd too). My favorite TV shows are Sherlock (BBC version) and Doctor Who (both classic and new series). We enjoy Marvel movies - The Avengers, Captain America, Doctor Strange, etc. - and also the Marvel TV series - Agents of Shield, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, etc. My other hobbies include making beaded jewelry and sometimes knitting. I love to travel, but since we have children who are quickly approaching college age, we don't do as much as we used to.

If we would win the lottery, the first thing I would do (aside from paying off the mortgage and setting aside the funds for college for my sons) is to go back to school myself! I love to learn and would probably take lots of psychology, philosophy and literature courses.

I'm so glad to be back with the 75'ers again this year and am going to attempt to visit more than I have in the past.

I plan only to loosely follow the challenges - if I read a book and it fits, I'll count it, but I am not going to plan my reading to complete a challenge. If I need a book to read, I'll consider something that fits the challenge.

A Book A Year

I loved this idea - so I am copying Paul, Roni, Karen and possibly others. These books may not necessarily be my favorite book published that year, but are books that I have rated highly, enjoyed, and likely reread, and have some meaning to me. Touchstones aren't working - but I'm off to the eye doctor soon, so I'll work on the touchstones and the rest of my updating when I return later today.

Happy New Thread, Robin!

Nice to see a Vorkosigan book among your favorites; I'm a big fan of those. Like you, I also loved Major Pettigrew's Last Stand.

Happy new thread, Robin, and I'm so glad to see you back!!

I did not realize that there was a Kareem Abdul Jabar/Anna Waterhouse series about Sherlock and Mycroft - they may need to go on my Christmas wish list.

>19 rretzler: I see a hole in Hugo your list for 1953. Here's my encouragement for you to pick up The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester. It takes place in a world where telepathy has become common and as result murder has essentially been wiped out. The novel centers on a man who successfully murders someone and the Psi-Cop assigned to the case. I found it an intense and compelling read.

The book also heavily influenced J. Michael Straczynski in his creation of the Psi Corps for Babylon 5.

>29 jnwelch: Thanks, Joe. Love the Vorkosigan Saga. I just finished reading it this summer - I was dragging it out because I didn't want it to end. Bujold seems pretty sure that she's not going to write any more novels in the series, so I was glad to see that she might at least write a few more short stories/novellas about Miles and Co.

>30 harrygbutler: Hi, Harry and thanks.

>31 karenmarie: Thanks, Karen. The first book came out in 2015 and I gave it 3 stars (here is a link to my mini-review https://www.librarything.com/topic/196097#5303958). When I saw the next book come out, I decided that I was interested enough to buy the second book. I haven't read it yet, so we'll see.

>32 brodiew2: Good to know, Brodie, I hadn't realized that it influenced Babylon 5! I do own The Demolished Man, just haven't gotten around to reading it yet, so with your glowing review, I'll read it sooner rather than later.

>33 quondame: Thanks, Susan.

Hi Robin! Happy new thread. Nice to see you back!

You seem to have done lots of reading, in between making lists;-)

Happy new thread Robin! Good to see you back. I see your reading hasn't suffered - though I confess I skimmed through your lists.

>55 thornton37814: Hi, Lori - a bit of overkill, I know. I seem to have gone crazy on the reading challenges this year, especially since I'm not really following them - my reading just happens to coincide with the lists, so I figured might as well...it certainly keeps me busy tracking them.

>56 figsfromthistle: Hi, Anita and thanks. Welcome to the thread, nice to see you here.

>57 humouress: Hi, Nina, thanks! No problem - I think the lists are more for me anyway, I know its a lot to take in, especially the challenges this year. I think I'll definitely cut down next year - it was an experiment...

Robin, it's so good to have you back. Those lists are impressive. And I'm delighted to see that The Curse of Chalion is coming up in your reading--you will love it!

So you read Three Men in a Boat and I don't remember if you've read To Say Nothing of the Dog yet. If not, you have to!!

>59 ronincats: Thanks so much, Roni. I'm sure I will love The Curse of Chalion if it is even remotely as good as the Vorkosigan Saga. I finally finished it - I had been holding off because I didn't want it to end, I'm just sorry it took me so long to read it in the first place!

I have indeed read To Say Nothing of the Dog - what a wonderful book. It was actually what prompted me to read Three Men in a Boat which I found wonderful as well. I wish I hadn't let so much time go by between both books so that I could remember more exactly what happened when Ned & co. come upon J & co.

>58 rretzler: I realized I never made it to the comedic novel for British Author Challenge I'd intended to read this month, but I read one that somewhat qualifies. It may not qualify as strongly as the others, but it was funny in quite a few places, so I may end up using it.

Adding a belated happy new thread Robin and lovely to see you posting again!

>67 Carmenere: Thanks, Lynda. The beauty of 99% of the books I buy is that they are ebooks - so they're either on my Kindle or in the cloud! So theoretically there's no guilt because I don't have piles of books all over the place (and why I keep lists of what I've purchased!)

>68 vancouverdeb: Hi, Deb. Thanks!

>69 humouress: *waving back* Hi, Nina

>70 Berly: Hi, Kim. Yes, I think I've gone overboard this year!

>71 souloftherose: Thanks, Heather. I enjoyed The Curse of Chalion - perhaps not as much as the Vorkosigan Saga as it took me a bit to get into it, but once Caz used death magic and becaome host to Dondo and the Demon I was hooked!

>72 The_Hibernator: Thanks, Rachel.

>73 rretzler: Glad you enjoyed Curse of Chalion Robin. I don't think I could really say whether I like CoC or the Vorkosigan series better overall - too difficult to compare such a long series to one book but I love both and I'm very happy both exist. The other books in the World of the Five Gods series are also worth checking out. Paladin of Souls and The Hallowed Hunt are about different characters (PoS has Ista from CoC as the main character) and then you get onto the Penric novellas which Bujold is currently writing and publishing on a fairly adhoc basis. I think kindness seems to be a theme of this particular world Bujold has created and I find these books quite restorative at the moment.

78rretzler
Nov 11, 2018, 12:19 pm

>76 quondame: I've never read any Dorothy Dunnett so it sounds like I'll have to put the Niccolò series on my wishlist.

>77 souloftherose: I'm definitely going to read the World of the Five Gods series. Bujold is such a fantastic author - I feel so comfortable with her books.

79quondame
Nov 11, 2018, 4:12 pm

>78 rretzler: It seems the majority of Dorothy Dunnett fans prefer the Lymond Chronicles, though the first book of that series is so dense with references to period literature it has deterred significant numbers, and truly having the guide to decipher it does help. What I can't forgive my reading friends for is not telling me how screamingly funny some of the scenes are - however horrendous the meat grinder the characters are put through the grace notes of humor are what remain with me. I started the Niccolò series with the guide beside me only to find it really unnecessary - the 15th century was somewhat known to me from my medieval enthusiasms, and the dialog unencoded in the contemporary literature.

85quondame
Nov 18, 2018, 4:32 pm

>84 thornton37814: Dorothy Dunnett's books are not fantasy. They are historical fiction and very much better researched than 90+% of anything written between 1960-2000 - when they were written and most now days. There are a few mystical elements, but they are fit within the historical structure of the day.

Hi Robin!

I've penciled a note into my 2019 desk calendar about the Lymond Chronicles with you and Susan underneath - we'll see if it makes sense early in the year or perhaps a bit later to at least talk about having a group read.

Susan - your profile says you live in LA. I was born and raised there - Inglewood, Hawthorne, Diamond Bar, Los Angeles, Redondo Beach, Glendale, Sunland and Tujunga, then finally the big move across the country to NC.

91quondame
Nov 29, 2018, 6:59 pm

>90 karenmarie: I've been in LA since the 70's always in the basin from Hollywood to Santa Monica and now am very near the 405 - 10 interchange, in a wee pocket of pseudo-suburb. Once or twice my job or my husband's job has moved to the south, but we let them go, I'm where I want to be. I grew up and went to college in California and So. Calif. culture just felt right to me.

Hi, Roni. Hope all is well with you.

Getting ready for the holidays is keeping me really busy, as I'm sure it is for everyone else. I'm getting a lot of audiobook listening done as I prepare!

I realized that I completely blew past my 8th Thingaversary. I've been buying a lot of books, so I guess I'll count the books I bought on the 7th - 11th of December as my Thingaversary haul.

  1. A Lot Like Christmas by Connie Willis - audiobook version
  2. Out of the Shadows by Tim Lebbon
  3. The Fall of Gondolin by JRR Tolkien
  4. Tales from the Perilous Realm by JRR Tolkien
  5. The Arsenal Stadium Mystery by Leonard Gribble
  6. The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
  7. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley - audiobook version
  8. Children of the Fleet by Orson Scott Card - audiobook version
  9. Provenance by Ann Leckie - audiobook version

Happy Belated Thingaversary, Robin! Looks like you have the book reward thing well in hand.

>103 thornton37814: Nice Thingaversary haul, even if they weren't deliberately purchased for the Thingaversary.

That’s a pretty nice list of books!

Happy Thingaversary!

If you didn't get those specifically for your Thingaversary, maybe it was a good thing you didn't remember (said as a person rapidly running out of shelf space).

>102 ronincats: Thanks, Roni. Yep, I've gone overboard on the book purchasing this year.

>103 thornton37814: Thanks, Lori. I've been listening to a lot of audiobooks lately as I'm knitting some Christmas presents and it beats watching TV

>104 drneutron: Thanks, Jim. Certainly heavy on the SFF this go-round!

>105 humouress: Thanks, Nina. The beauty of my book collection is that I won't run out of space (although I may on my Kindle) since the majority of my purchases the last 8 years are stored somewhere on a cyber-shelf! So as long as there is electricity and an internet connection, I'm good to go!

>107 humouress: I call it the out-of-sight, no-guilt method of book ownership! No need to worry about shelf-space and no need to cull books to make room for more. Of course, as a person who is very visual-spatial, that means that I sometimes forget about all the books I have! If I could actually see them, I might actually stop buying them, but for now, they affect nothing more than my wallet!! Now if the end of the world happens and I survive, I'm basically out of reading material! LOL!

Robin, help! the stars have all gone missing from my mini reviews!

(anglebracket open)img src="http://static.librarything.com/pics/s5.gif"(anglebracket close) etc aren't showing any more!

If I had the gifs I could upload them, now that I think of it.

>117 quondame: I suspect the issue with your stars is connected with the other disappearing images and assorted problems mentioned in this thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/301071

Some people have been able to fix some images by changing "http" to "https" in the link URLs, but it doesn't seem to have worked for everyone.

>118 harrygbutler: Thanks. going to https does work for me, though the thought of changing 300+ entries isn't thrilling!
