OK, this isn't a great book sale alert, it's a great online theater alert. We saw this production of The Alchemist and are delighted that the Red Bull theater is offering it online for the first two weeks of February. Hilarious.

I guess y'all already know how you feel about Anne Tyler...I read A Spool of Blue Thread when it came out and, well...yeah. But as the years have galumphed along, I've remembered the Whitshank family with exasperated fondness, with occasional flashes of sympathy, and the odd moment of revelation.

I've rated books a lot more highly than this one that have had less impact on me than this one has, and continues to have. So go buy you one for your Kindle, since it's a lousy $1.99: https://smile.amazon.com/Spool-Blue-Thread-Novel-ebook/dp/B00MSS0WVY/

Would it be an acceptable mea culpa for me to offer up The Night Always Comes by Willy Vlautin? It's only $1.99 on Kindle (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08CRBYLP8) so is extry affordable, as well as readable and interesting and deeply affecting....
Barely thirty, Lynette is exhausted. Saddled with bad credit and juggling multiple jobs, some illegally, she’s been diligently working to buy the house she lives in with her mother and developmentally disabled brother Kenny. Portland’s housing prices have nearly quadrupled in fifteen years, and the owner is giving them a good deal. Lynette knows it’s their last best chance to own their own home—and obtain the security they’ve never had. While she has enough for the down payment, she needs her mother to cover the rest of the asking price. But a week before they’re set to sign the loan papers, her mother gets cold feet and reneges on her promise, pushing Lynette to her limits to find the money they need.

Set over two days and two nights, The Night Always Comes follows Lynette’s frantic search—an odyssey of hope and anguish that will bring her face to face with greedy rich men and ambitious hustlers, those benefiting and those left behind by a city in the throes of a transformative boom. As her desperation builds and her pleas for help go unanswered, Lynette makes a dangerous choice that sets her on a precarious, frenzied spiral. In trying to save her family’s future, she is plunged into the darkness of her past, and forced to confront the reality of her life.

A heart wrenching portrait of a woman hungry for security and a home in a rapidly changing city, The Night Always Comes raises the difficult questions we are often too afraid to ask ourselves: What is the price of gentrification, and how far are we really prepared to go to achieve the American Dream? Is the American dream even attainable for those living at the edges? Or for too many of us, is it only a hollow promise?

Huge value!

Yeah - which gets all the Kindle books with "freebie" in the title or series. A few of which are free, but... You can also go to the Kindle store, without searching, and go to a category (have to drill down until you get a list of books), and sort by price low to high; all the $0.00 ones come to the top. But that's not Amazon giving freebies, it's mostly the author and/or publisher.

A top-quality historical fiction read, The Firedrake, is $1.99 on Kindle today:
https://smile.amazon.com/Firedrake-Novel-Cecelia-Holland-ebook/dp/B00J84KX5G/
I read this in ~1970 and, for the first time ever, connected History with his story. The main character pisses over the side of the boat on the way from Normandy to England. "People...pissed...then...?"

A Before-and-After moment of great personal significance, and a formative read that held up to a 2001 re-read.

Not exactly a sale, but the latest Zombies Need Brains Kickstarter is on (despite the name, it's not horror). They do a Kickstarter every year for a set of anthologies - usually three, this time it's four anthologies, each with a distinct theme. They set the anchor authors ahead of time, but half of each book is filled from an open call for authors - F&SF on the appropriate theme (and it counts as a professional sale, for SFWA purposes). Really good stories, most of them!

And since you get four ebooks for $20, it is a sale too. But you won't get them until about this time next year. You can get paper books too, but they're pricier and require shipping, so I don't. You'll also get bonus (e)books, depending on when you back and where the Kickstarter has gotten to.

This is their 10th year of Kickstarting anthologies; I have all their previous ones, they have succeeded in both kickstarting and delivering the anthologies every time. They've also started an online magazine, and you can get the ebook of a year's worth of magazine stories along with this kickstarter (I pledged for that).

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/znb/new-zombies-need-brains-anthologies-for...

This year's themes are:
DRAGONESQUE (stories from the point of view of the dragon)
GAME ON! (games - not sports - with an F or SF twist)
SOLAR FLARE (Solarpunk - hopeful, cooperative SF)
ARTIFICE & CRAFT (Magical items)

UK Kindle offer, don't know how long for: Beautiful Country by Qian Julie Wang is 99p.

This is a memoir by a woman who moved to the US from China as a child with her parents, but they were living undocumented. I've wanted to read it since I heard an abridged version serialised on BBC Radio and had a library copy.

Hawthorn Academy by D.R. Perry

We all start as strangers. Why does that make me so nervous?

I can't imagine life without Mom, Dad, Bubbe or my friends in Salem. And that's what I'll be living at Hawthorn Academy, the campus between worlds. But Hawthorn Academy's the place to be if I want to join the family business as a veterinarian for magic critters.

It's magi only at my new school, so I'm going without my besties. The only person I'll know there is my snarky big brother. At least I've already bonded with a familiar. But my dragonet means I'm destined for above-average power levels.

The last thing I want to do is scare people off. You only get one chance at first impressions, after all.

But will I make friends or enemies?

Now for something silly: Dragon Soup by Patty Jansen

Magic is illegal in Tamba, and dragons are highly magical creatures.
So who, in their right mind, would ask for dragon soup made with dragons in a place where magic is prohibited?
What's the wizard's game?
Why does he give a serving girl two gold coins?
Why does she open her own inn a few days later?
Why is he hanging out with the town's leaders at the dressmaker's fair?

The only way to get the special illustrated edition in paperback or hardcover or ebook.
