AUGUST ROOT - Progress Thread

Summer storms - This month I have chosen to concentrate on Mother Nature's fury.





The sultry days of summer are here in the Northern Hemisphere and frequently late afternoon storms erupt with vicious winds, heavy rains, even hail!

Thunder claps and lightning strikes can be beautiful yet dangerous. Torrential rain can cause mudslides in mountainous areas and flooding. Funnel clouds are not like in the Wizard of Oz that whirl away, they are destructive and deadly.

Stay safe, my friends, in any storm. Mother Nature doesn't fool around!

Love summer storms when I am safe and no one is harmed.

Your thunderstorm heading for the month is right on target. I am on my way back from vacation and last night I drove through a summer thunderstorm.

A few weeks ago we had a very bad storm that tore a huge limb off a tree in our front yard that blocked our road for over a day.

That looks scary!

Added my first ROOT of August to my personal ticker: Five Children and It, by E. Nesbit.

I'm back from my holiday now, and have added 2 books (actually finished in July, but I'll count them for August as the July figures are already done) to my own ticker. That takes my total for the year to 44 ROOTs.

I've added another book to my own ticker, making it #3 for August and #45 for the year to date - so I'm now 3/4 of the way to my goal.

I was at 58 ROOTS at the end of July (not 28) and have read two so far in August, for a total of 60. Well on my way to my goal of 84 ROOTS this year.

I tagged my first ROOT of August. I listened to A Reaper At the Gates by Sabaa Tahir while driving back from my vacation. It was exciting and made the miles go by so fast.

I just finished ROOT #1 of August and ROOT #19 of the year! This was definitely one of my favorites so far: People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. I was fairly confused until I got to the 4th section and was glad I persevered!

I have completed my first two roots for August, Seven Types of Ambiguity by Elliot Perlman and The Attack by Yasmina Khadra. I again cannot update my ticker. It should read 32/48.

I am having a terrible month of reading. I am doing lots of reading but not getting anything completed. I hope that means that eventually I will finish 4 or 5 books all at once.

#20 for the year and #2 for August- Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I received this book for SantaThing 2021. I'd read it as a child so it was nice to revisit a book that I remember liking a lot. The characters were quirky and delightful, though the plot sometimes wandered in ways that didn't quite make sense to me.

For a change I read a book on the day it entered my collection, Poor People with Money : A Novel by Dominic Hoey. This book is so hot off the press I am unable yet to load it in this catalogue. That takes my tally to 33/48.

I've finished three books so far in August, but only two were ROOTs: Her Country (nonfiction Early Reviewers win) and The Barrakee Mystery set in the Australian bush in the early 20th century. Very different from each other, but both recommended.

I finished reading Clementine: The Life of Mrs. Winston Churchill by Sonia Purnell. This was a straightforward biography of the late Clementine Churchill and once I got started reading it - it was a good biography.

ROOT #21 is complete. It was The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. I had no idea what it was going to be about when I read it and it took awhile to get in to the author's style of storytelling. I liked the way she told the story, but the story itself didn't quite work for me.

Hello all! I'm finally rejoining the ROOTs challenge, having slowed down with reading this year and have only just set up my 2022 thread.

I'm finding Ticker Factory even more glitchy this year, both in Safari and in Firefox on my iMac. If I create a ticker, the first one is okay but if I try to create a new one, the page to select a ticker style just keeps flashing, even if I click on one to select it. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

Unfortunately that means I haven't been able to create a ticker for the total ROOTs I've read this year though I have posted to the ticker thread, just to mark my place. And it also means that I dare not update the main tickers.

That happens to me too sometimes.
It might help if you press F5 or refresh or go back . I've tried all those things and one if them always does the trick.

I switched on my computer (usually I just put it in 'sleep' mode - not eco friendly, I know) and tried setting up a new ticker, but the screen is still flashing. I'll give those methods a go, though, when I can face it again.

ETA: I've managed to create a ticker for my ROOTs. For some reason, it works more often if I go from the main ticker (at the top here). But, even still, not always.

I finished reading The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides and hope to finish Swans of Fifth Avenue by tomorrow. August has been a poor ROOT month so far, but maybe I can redeem it here at the finish line.

I am so far behind on my ROOTs. I have read 20 books this year, but only eight were off my shelves. I'm really stuck right now on The War that Ended Peace, which is a book from my goal to read all my WWI related books that I've been working on since 2020 (I have 14 and have read 5 so far).

Anyway, I finished my 8th ROOT on 27 August -- Foundation by Isaac Asimov. I've had my copy since the 90s.

I squeezed in ROOT #5 for August and #23 overall yesterday: Letters to the Lost by Bridgid Kemmerer. It came highly recommended and did not disappoint!

I didn't get many ROOT's read because I am working on reading the books for the Kansas Authors Club contest. I am one of the judges this year for the Science Fiction/Fantasy books, so they are all knew books and have not been on my shelves long enough to be ROOT's. I still have two more titles to read for this so reading them will affect my September reading as well.
