For those of you who don't know me, I have been on LT and a 75er since December 2008. I have a great Hubby (who found LT for me) and 3 grown children (the oldest got married last year!). I like almost any book there is, but I tend more toward fiction. I currently work with my Hubby in our business which cleans industrial and storm water and brings it up to EPA standards. Particle removal, pH balancing, heavy metal decontamination, etc. He's a ChemE and I was a Neuroscience major, so I understand the science of our projects and can translate them into English for our customers (LOL); I also do the accounting and marketing -- you just don't want me to design the equipment! I have been a neuroscience lab researcher, an editor and writer, an advertising exec, and the Community Relations Mgr of the NBA MN Timberwolves as well as their 501C3 Director. Career path? NO! Eclectic and fun? YES! I am currently on two advisory councils for Literary Arts here in Portland, Oregon, and I also practice TKD (3rd degree BB).

Please join us if you are interested in Reusing and Recycling. People are sharing brand and book suggestions and also keeping track of their efforts. Check it out!

https://www.librarything.com/topic/339326

Below is my personal list of what I am doing and want to be doing. I plan to keep updating this as I make improvements in my lifestyle this year. Brands listed are my choices and more suggestions are listed in the above thread.

Things I was already doing
*Carry reusable shopping bags
*Reuse packaging and don't overwrap (I have a whole closet of boxes and packing material I recycle)
*Use recyclable paper and cardboard instead of styrofoam packing material
*Buy my veggies in cardboard crates instead of plastic containers whenever possible
*Use a home soda maker with reusable bottle
*Dishwasher detergent -- Planet
*Silicone and beeswax dish toppers/wraps
*Garbage Bags -- Seventh Generation
*Compost Collector under sink that goes into city Compost Bin
*Cloth Napkins
*Wider comfort range for heating and cooling house
*Motion detectors on lights to keep them off when not in use

Recently started
*Keeping a reusable water bottle and cup in the car
*And a reusable utensil kit in my glove compartment
*And a reusable metal straw
*Phone Case -- Switched to compostable case by Pela
*Toilet Paper -- Who Gives A Crap
*Laundry Detergent sheets -- TruEarth
*Cloth "Paper" Towels -- Marley's Monsters
*Recycled Paper Towels -- Who Gives A Crap
*Sponges compostable -- If You Care
*Scrub Cloths cotton and cellulose -- Down to Earth Basics

Next steps
*Transitioning from liquid soap, shower gels and shampoo to solid versions not packaged in plastic. This one may be a bit harder for me with my skin allergies, but I am going to try. I am using up what I have left and then I will try to make the switch.
*Toothpaste
*Composter -- outside
*Ridwell for recycling things

Re >9 Berly:, I just saw something on the news this evening that I thought was a great initiative. It's a toy exchange club for environmentally minded parents of young kids, based on age-appropriate toys (as per the Montessori school of thought). They aim to keep outgrown toys out of landfill and I believe they take only toys that are not plastic. I know you don't have little ones (but you could have grands one of these days!;-). Anyhow, so far, it's a local initiative but I think it's an idea whose time is now!

100. A Visit From the Goon Squad buy Jennifer Egan 3.0

Bennie Salazar, an aging former punk rocker and record executive, and Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs confront their pasts in this powerful story about how rebellion ages, influence corrupts, habits turn to addictions, lifelong friendships fluctuate and turn, and how art and music have the power to redeem.

I don't usually like books with many characters and this one had lots and the characters overlap throughout the stories and I found it hard to keep everyone straight. It also had multiple time frames, which I have less problems with. I enjoyed the book more when I started to read each chapter as a short story, but then I ran the risk of missing the theme of the book which is the goon squad or the passage of time and aging. Lots of references to the music world and I enjoyed the book more after discussing it with Ellen and Beth. But the most important things are I read it and it's a Pulitzer Prize Winner so I can cross it off my list!! And I made 100!!

41MickyFine
Edited: Jan 2, 2023, 11:35 am

>40 Berly: I read this one the year it won the Pulitzer and really enjoyed it. I still remember liking the PowerPoint chapter a lot, which is impressive because details from books can often fade very quickly after I read one.

Congrats on making it to a nice round 100!

42Berly
Edited: Dec 30, 2022, 9:32 pm

>41 MickyFine: I really like The Goon Squad's PowerPoint chapter, too. That's cool that you still remember it! I plan to read The Candy House in January -- some of the characters show up in that book as well.

The Candy House is also extraordinarily moving, a testament to the tenacity and transcendence of human longing for real connection, love, family, privacy and redemption. In the world of Egan's spectacular imagination, there are "counters" who track and exploit desires and there are "eluders," those who understand the price of taking a bite of the Candy House. Egan introduces these characters in an astonishing array of narrative styles-from omniscient to first person plural to a duet of voices, an epistolary chapter and a chapter of tweets. If Goon Squad was organized like a concept album, The Candy House incorporates Electronic Dance Music's more disjunctive approach. The parts are titled: Build, Break, Drop. With an emphasis on gaming, portals, and alternate worlds, its structure also suggests the experience of moving among dimensions in a role-playing game. The Candy House is a bold, brilliant imagining of a world that is moments away. Egan takes to stunning new heights her "deeply intuitive forays into the darker aspects of our technology-driven, image-saturated culture" (Vogue). The Candy House delivers an absolutely extraordinary combination of fierce, exhilarating intelligence and heart"--

Should be interesting!!

Hi Kimmers! I'm dropping off my star here. You know that I'll be visiting less often than I'd like, and I'll never keep up, but I do want to follow along with your reading.

Looking forward to our shared reads, too!

Happy New Year to you, Hubby, and the whole family. I hope 2023 is a healthier one for you and that you're able to really get back into TKD, endorphins and all.

Plus one for good luck. ; ) Happy New Year!

>56 BLBera: TwinB--Hubby and I were getting takeout for dinner and it wasn't going to be ready for an other 20 minutes so of course I had to spend my time wisely and walk down to Annie Bloom's bookstore and there Horse was, just neighing at me, so I had to get it. >63 figsfromthistle: It was frickin' awesome!! I love Pink Martini in the first place and then they brought in so many guest singers -- 4 of the Von Trapp grandkids (the originals famous from The Sound of Music), their lead singer China Forbes (who won the the Ella Fitzgerald Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival), a former Miss USA winner, some singer from the TV show The Voice or America's Got Talent (I recognized him but can't remember his name and there was no program...), and at least 4 more singers. I am horrible with names. Sorry. : ) Anyhow, tons of fun and everyone was in a good mood.

>64 EBT1002: Oh and another highlight of the New Year’s eve concert was a short animated film called ‘Destino,’ which was made by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney in the 1940s! This is only the second time it was performed live because it was suppressed by the Disney family (not on brand for them) and only found in family archives in the early 2000s. WAAAAAY different than the usual Disney thing.

The seven-minute short follows the story of Chronos and his ill-fated love for a mortal woman named Dahlia. The story continues as Dahlia dances through surreal scenery inspired by Dalí's paintings. There is no dialogue, but the soundtrack includes music by the Mexican composer Armando Dominguez and then Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini reconstructed the music and choir parts.

So, again, my oldest daughter's wedding was wonderful, but the rest of 2022 was pretty hard.
Let's talk about car troubles and how the year ended...

12/28 My middle daughter called because she noticed her friend was weaving as she was driving home from a night out, managed to call her and get her to pull over, and called us for backup. Good move! We drove out and got the friend and her car safely home.

12/29 The next night, same daughter was headed out to meet some friends and her car started to sound weird. Again she pulled over and called us. We heard it and definitely something was wrong. She called AAA to come tow her, but they had a three hour wait time. Luckily she was not far from the house. So again, we headed out and picked her up. Two and a half hours later we met the tow truck and followed him to the repair shop. Consolatory coffee was consumed and we got one for the tower, too. Turned out to be a clutch problem and it is already fixed.

My car was also in the shop, but just for for regular maintenance. It's fine.

12/30 The following night, same daughter was out on a date. His car battery died. Thankfully she called a friend , instead of us, and got a ride home. The date had a friend come jump his car and he got home safely. They are still talking.

Also, my oldest daughter was in San Diego celebrating her birthday with a group of friends and they hired a limo driver for their evening. He was an hour late to pick them up because the limo's battery died. Then he was so reckless as a driver that they let him go and had to Uber the rest of the night.

12/31 Fourth night now, back to my middle daughter. She was babysitting for a bunch of kids during a New Year's Eve wedding and when she got back to her car someone had busted in the back window. They only stole her emergency pack, but now we have to get the car fixed. Again.

1/1 No car drama yesterday. So off to a good start!

So, these are the two books I am reading right now that I never finished last year and I felt they should not go in the DNF pile. I was just not in the right place to do them justice. Very glad I opened them up again -- enjoying them soooo much more. State of Wonder Amazon jungle, a mysterious death, and researching a new drug and All the Light We Cannot See a blind child, a genius with radios, Nazi's, Paris and Germany, with beautiful poetic writing and interesting facts of history and nature.

And I already loved An Immense World, but it is on my Kindle and not getting the attention it deserves because, as I bragged about on my last thread, it is simply amazing. Animals, nature and how we "see" the world so very differently.

I am also reading/listening to Project Hail Mary and loving it! Ray Porter is such a great narrator and Andy Weir is just awesome. Weird, funny, space, science, save-the-world stuff.

Off to a great start with my books!

I loved Empire of Pain. It was one of my top 5 books (from a tragically low total of 23) last year. I hope you do too! I'd heard the hype and had a couple of friends tell me "you have to read it" which sometimes makes me NOT read it, then one brought her copy round and I felt obliged to start it - couldn't put it down till it was done.

Lot of love here for An Immense World. I had it on my Christmas WANT! List, but it wasn't a winner of the Books for Gramps Bonanza. Instead he got Demon Copperhead, a collection of Nikolai Gogol stories, and a recent translation of Turgenev's Fathers and Children.* But I gave the Yong book to DiL Tara, and she was reading in at my house on the 26th. GOAL!! I can borrow it from her at some point.

I put that asterisk after Fathers and Children so I could whine about my inability to get the correct Touchstone to present itself. The particular edition I was given does have a book page with the correct ISBN and pub date and cover image, and I followed the step-by-step to forcing the Touchstone using the number of that page. And it STILL pulls up Fathers and Sons.

So why IS that, Kim? Why don't you DO something about it? Hahahaha. Just an old man being railroaded into dementia. Pay me no mind.

Hi Kim

Here is my first thread.
https://www.librarything.com/topic/347332

I hope to be more active in visiting the threads this year. And, I hope my body will cooperate with this goal. December of 2022 was difficult and pain ridden. I know I handle this well, but there are some days I simply let God know that I've had enough of this! I shouldn't complain as most of February of 2022 was spent in the hospital with three surgeries regarding an infusion pump. And, I've managed to stay out of the hospital the remaining months of 2022.

I continue to work on the house and last week a new kitchen floor was installed. Today, the remaining box of flooring was installed in one of the downstairs bathrooms. Both projects turned out really well and the two younger men who worked on both the kitchen and bathroom, were personable and hard working. In addition to installing the floor materials, they also removed the wood work and placed brand new white lovely trim.

Yes, the threads are flying. And it is difficult to keep up. But, I set the goal of visiting threads more often, and I hop to stick to it.

I need three new bathroom cabinets/sinks, but that will need to work. A friend who is very creative recommended that I sand the cabinets, use primer before painting them, and then remove the doors and sew lovely curtains to be placed on a flexible curtain rod. I have the paint, the sand paper, the rods and some beautiful heavy material. Now, I need the motivation to finish what I started.

Reading was slow in December, and energy is low thus far this year. Tomorrow I will sit in my comfortable chair and read!

I am thinking of you and hope that you can be healthy in 2023. These health issues suck out all the energy for us. I continue to hope that we can have energy and time to read!

I send much love.

>138 weird_O: Okay. "Why don't you DO something about it? Hahahaha." I am going to give it a go. Ready? Father's and Children? By Turgenev? I had to scroll WAAAAAAAAY down to find it. Is this the touchstone you wanted? Do I get any points. If not at least I tried. : )

And I am glad you got Demon Copperhead I know Mark and Stasia are reading this in January and I am planning on reading it in March with Beth and Ellen. I am sure others are joining in as well. So join a group!

>139 Whisper1: Linda, found you!! Yes, 2022 was hard. You had three surgeries and I had one along with two bouts of Covid and some unknown bug that gave me a fever for a week. Ugh! I am still dealing with Long Covid and you still have pain, but I hope we both have a healthier year ahead of us.

And like you I really hope to be more present here. It is so good for my happiness. I have decided to try and do this while I "watch" the news with Hubby. I don't really like the news -- it's so depressing. But I can listen and do posts at the same time, so, we'll see how my plan goes.

Yay for new floors and trim! That's always so nice to have everything looking new and cool. Good luck on the bathroom cabinets. I bet they'll turn out great. When you find the time and motivation. ; )

Have an easy day and some fun reading. With love and hugs from me. : )

FWIW, here's the link to the specific book: https://www.librarything.com/work/3493/book/231645098
Though this translation was published just last year (i.e. 2022) it's owned by 8,108 LT members, 119 of whom have posted reviews. And so—Yes, I've already dragged this out beyond toleration—the book page is a mash-up of info about Turgenev's 1862 novel published under the title Fathers and Children but more commonly as Fathers and Sons. I just learned this, like, ten minutes ago. My bad.

It's the onset of dementia, I tell ya. As I said, Pay me no mind.

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett 4.0

There's a new fertility drug discovered in the Amazon, but one of the researchers has died and communication has stalled out on the drug's research progress. There are many questions. Marina is sent to the wilderness to find out exactly what is going on.

For me, the book is good but a little slow in the beginning. But the background is absolutely necessary to know who the characters are and what's at stake. Then once we enter the rivers and jungles of the Amazon things get a lot more exciting. This book explores love, science and ethics on so many levels. The characters are very distinct and her portrayal of the jungle is beautiful.

Hope you enjoyed the little snippets below! It's a great book -- you should read it!

Fun Facts About Ann Patchett and This Book
From an Interview with Portland Literary Arts

Ann actually went to the Amazon for ten days, but says that 36 hours would have been plenty. "There would be 8 or 10 people on the open boats. We would go out for hours and hours, down these tiny, twisting tributaries that fork right, fork left, fork left, fork right. We were all thinking, If the guide has a heart attack, we are screwed because we're never getting out of here. Hours and hours go by and you don't see anybody. It's very remote."

Ann couldn't decide at first whether the main characters, Marina and Dr. Swenson, should be women or men, but knew that they should be the same sex.

The highest bidders at a library foundation fundraiser (Ann is on the board) won the chance to have characters in Ann's book named after them! Jack and Barbara Bovendor.

And the scene with anaconda actually happened on her boat! They pulled into a lettuce pond and this guy asked to stop the boat and he reached in and pulled out an anaconda! He grabbed it too far from the head, (same as the character in the book) but rather than fight with it he threw it back in the water. When Ann was writing the book, she put that scene in there and added some embellishments and had someone try to kill the snake with a scalpel. In real life, Ann had become friends with the snake guy, who was a professional tour guide and naturalist and had actually already caught several anacondas (they can be 18 feet long), and he said a scalpel would be useless. But that every boat In the Amazon would have a machete, so Ann put that in her character's hands instead.

In many of her past books, Ann says that she likes to put her characters in an enclosed area and see what happens. "The canopy of tress {is} the roof. {In the Amazon} you have to be with the group all the time, because otherwise something is going to eat you. I've never felt so claustrophobic and hemmed in, as I did in the Amazon. So, it's the Patchett motif going strong."

Edited: Jan 8, 2023, 1:47 am

>171 figsfromthistle: I gave it a four star rating, so that's pretty darn good in my book. : )

The ending was pretty awesome and at the same time left me with so many questions. Does Marina go back to the pharmaceutical company? Is she done with her boss? Since she was eating the fertility bark, did she get pregnant on her one-night affair with her coworker Anders? Is she going to tell her boss about the malaria side effect or keep that hidden? And I want to know if Easter ever escapes and goes back to his adopted tribe.

These Precious Days is probably my favorite by Patchett, followed by this one and The Patron Saint of Liars.

Patchett was at Chautauqua a few years ago and we stopped at her bookstore on the way home. It was surprisingly small and had a book club meeting going on in a large circle right in the middle of it (it was so public I wouldn't dare to say a word if I were a member) but her dog, a young cinnamon cockapoo was in the workroom in the back -- I fell in love immediately and thought about trying to smuggle her through the store and out the door but decided it wouldn't work lol.

Team Leaders for Contract (Myself), Commercial, Accounts, Administration, QA/QC, Mechanical, Electrical, Safety and Design sit in a sort of open cubicle with his/her team (Design manager is female) arrayed before them. I have 14 staff working directly under me. Of the 320 staff approximately half of the staff 181 wear their masks in the office whilst 139 do not.

It is interesting to note that amongst the 181 who wear their masks without fail - 103 had contracted COVID since the new flexible SOP was adopted whilst of the ones who don't wear their masks as often only 32 had contracted COVID. In our very unscientific observation 57% of those wearing masks caught COVID in our office whilst 23% of those who don't wear them caught it. No idea how to explain that.

In the office since the pandemic started only 17 of the 320 have never had COVID and we have had no COVID deaths. One staff has been separately diagnosed with COVID (tested positive on different occasions) and quarantined seven times!!! Quite a number have been infected twice but the majority, like me, have had it once.

We'll finish putting the puzzle together and see if we can figure it out before turning over the last flap. : )

Good thing you didn't try to sneak out the dog! LOL I'd have loved to eavesdrop on the bookclub....

>196 banjo123: >197 PaulCranswick: Rhonda and Paul--Well, that is certainly confusing. To wear a mask or not to wear a mask? That is the question! Seriously though, someone has had Covid 7 times in your office???? I had it twice last year and that was more than enough. And it is hard to isolate in big open offices like that.

Rhonda--There are several places that have really cool outdoor settings that could be kinda fun, too. Should I start a thread and see who's up for it?

>197 PaulCranswick: I know; it is astonishing or misdiagnosed - I am not sure which one, Kimmers.

Actually the data was established to show the necessity of wearing masks as often as possible in the working place - I will admit to being party to the fact that, as the data is not helpful to that message, we have not transmitted the information to the staff at large.

Initially it was part of our SOP to wear the mask at all times in the office but that is no longer the case and I do not wear mine at work any more.

When we go out to dinner the family divide is also quite noticeable. Erni and Belle (especially Erni) are very much pro mask wearing and keep on their masks until the food arrives - Yasmyne and myself do not any longer. "Proving" the opposite of my earlier post Erni and Belle have never contracted COVID whilst both Yasmyne and I have (and probably have some measure of 'natural" immunity now).

>200 PaulCranswick: >203 Caroline_McElwee: Paul--I understand why you didn't share your company stats--they certainly don't help the "wear your mask" message. And it is truly a mystery why certain people seem to get Covid, despite masking and vaccinating and others just don't. Also, there seems to be a new strain out that is even more contagious, XBB.1.5. It has gone from 1% of the variants in the US as of 12/1 to 27% as of 1/7. Ugh.

Caroline--I hope you continue to evade this virus. Jealous. ; )

Enjoying working on a puzzle; it's been a while. I liked the challenge of doing the puzzle with no picture, but that was when I had the easy pieces to work with. Now that it's the harder ones, I am very glad for the visual aid.

Happy Monday!

So, on the down side, literally, we live below the public sewer line and have to have our stuff pumped up the hill to join the line and our pump went out yesterday. The alarm went off, letting us know something wasn't right. It's not overflowing, yet, but we can't get anyone out to put in a new pump until Thursday. Switching to paper plates and cups and I may have to go shower at the gym or my daughter's house. Sigh.

>197 PaulCranswick: I have to wonder if some of the people who were not in the habit of wearing masks had built up immunity from previous encounters with the virus, while the ones who did wear masks had not had that chance. Not everyone who gets introduced to the bug gets obviously sick. On the other hand, it does sound like someone in the unmasked group contributed a particularly contagious dose to the community.

Without constant testing and double-blind experiments it's hard to know how much masks helped in the beginning, and how much they may be overzealous behavior now. Jim and I struggle with our decisions, but generally we use masks on the subway, where at least half the population does not use them, and in tight crowds like Christmas shopping, etc., and otherwise don't bother anymore.

Sending healing thoughts for the sewage and the long covid and the knee.

I added Louise Erdrich's bookstore to my bucket list of places to visit and think it could fit in with the Louise Penny tour for Three Pines in the eastern townships of Ontario that I also have planned.

Yikes on the sewage issue, and very cool about the puzzle. Morgan and I have worked puzzles together and discovered we have very different strategies and strengths. I often don't look at the picture.

>189 Berly: I also am putting a 1,000 piece puzzle together. Grand daughter is so very kind. She has a friend, Eliott, who has suffered through quite a bit in his young (17 years.) He knew I liked puzzles and gifted me with one that I really like. It is challenging, but not frustratingly so.
