2025 Halloween Treasure Hunt

1AbigailAdams26
Oct 17, 2025, 4:15 pm

It's October, and the Halloween Hunt has returned!

The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

Go HERE for the hunt.

You have two weeksโ€”until Friday October 31st at 11.59 pm Eastern Timeโ€”to find all the jack-o-lanterns hidden around the site and gather them all together into one troupe.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

We will be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two jack-o-lanterns, and anyone who finds all 12 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing prize.

Helpful tips

Please, use the spoiler tag when posting hints or suggestions. Here's how:

To use the spoiler tag, type the following before whatever you'd like to hide:

<spoiler>

And this, at the end of what's hidden:

</spoiler>

I can't get Jack-o-Lantern five to register, I'm almost certain I have the right answer so I suspect there's an url variation issue, I've approached it from two different directions to try and trigger it, but they were both the same url.

I've got 9 out of 12 (because I'd rather scavenger hunt than work) and was thinking I'm sooooooo smart but #1, #3 and #7 have me stumped! I thought I had #1 but I'm not sure I'm entering it right....

I'm stuck on #1, #2, #7, and #8.

I thought #2 is The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories by H. P. Lovecraft, but couldn't get the pumpkin. Is it not registering or do I have the wrong book?

For #3, figure out the name you should use from the first line, then just search under that, Halloween, and the more common name of the creature from line 2. For #4, search under the older term for the genre and those three occupations. For #6, keywords such as "pig" and "spooky" are important.

Consolidated hints from this thread (up to this point) for clues 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are now in the LT Treasure Hunts group.

If you're new to the Treasure Hunts or just need a refresher - because it's not always (in fact, more often than not these days, it isn't) a book/ work - have a look at the 'General Strategies' thread in that group.

And, speaking of 'refresher', some answers - especially the one to clue 5 - seem to need you to refresh/ reload the page to get your pumpkin.

IIRC, if you google something like "book pig halloween costume" you'll probably find it eventually, but bloody Peppa Pig has swamped everything else so it will be a long way down. In google you used to be able to exclude particular words, but it doesn't seem to be possible in DDG.

What I've got so far is the first and fourth line are for determining the "name" we should use then add in the mix the common name of the monster from the second and somehow arrive at the destination. Also, does the third line add someting to the mix?

That brought me to a page of lists. In the left-hand column, I scrolled down and clicked on awards. That narrowed the lists to four for me. Only two in that list were the best fit for the clue. I clicked on one that fit the clue. Once that opened, I looked to the far right column and scrolled down to find the type of media organization.

I'll keep it simple :-)

Among the millions of web pages under the www.librarything.com umbrella LT staff has chosen 12.
Your goal is to find them. When you happen to find one, a little banner will emerge and tell you so.

The riddles to solve are given here:
https://www.librarything.com/hunt/39

You come to this group to get help and hints (and brag, when you have found them all).

The 12 pages can be anything. I.e. some character from Common Knowledge, LT's webshop, a tag page, a work page, an author, a Melville decimal number 514.3383883 et cetera. Because the idea of the hunt is to get you to search all corners of the site.

>232 athometarheel: :) Those two were kinda tricky, even though I had ideas what each one could refer to, unfortunately no luck with the banners...

Just found one of the two missing ones. If you have not figured it out yet, you might wanna check the LT Treasure Hunt page and look on each hint page closely...

Even though I did not get all the banners, 10 out of 12 jack oยด lanterns are not bad. I am curious for the answers and figuring out if I might have been on the right path or not. Anyways thank you for a marvellous time/another joyful treasure hunt. Happy Halloween!
...
Since I figured out I still have time to get jack oยดlanters (check the time zones more frequently lol) I am gonna try my luck.
Just found one of the two that I am missing. Thanks for helping out guys ;) . One left.
...
None left. Found the last one. Turns out I was on the right path. Got all 12 of those jack oยดlanterns. Yay! Pretty satisfied. Getting to know/figuring this site out one treasure hunt at a time. :)
If you excuse me I have to read a Halloween book.

I got every one of them except #2 with lots of help from all of you! This was a tough Treasure Hunt for me. I looked at consolidated hints but still cannot get #2. Thank you everyone! Especially conceptDawg for the vulture!

Please help with #3. None of hints have helped. I've looked at every cover. Thanks.

Update: Got all 12 pumpkins! Thanks!!

Wow. This is the third treasure hunt Iโ€™ve participated in, and I canโ€™t figure any of clues out! The other times I answered all twelve clues. Hmm. Oh well.

Now that the halloween treasure hunt is over I should have a badge because I solve all 12 hints but I don't. Message says you missed it.

>246 Ros902E: Hunt badges are awarded manually and is (understandably) not a top priority by the staff. It might take months before you see it.
