The mobile (iphone/android) app has the ability to scan a barcode, do a lookup on the LibraryThing database and add the book to your library.
I suggest the app should extended to operate in two modes
a: as currently. i.e. add books to your library
b: scanning the barcode and JUST opening the relevant entry in your library, preferably with adding/appending an optional tag (user defined on the app)
This would enable an inventory check to take place by “tagging” all the scanned books with say “scanmonday” on your iphone/android app. Then later on your Macbook or PC, select all books with the “scanmonday” tag and using power edit, update inventory status etc
Adding a tag is more useful than directly updating inventory status as it would give the user the ability to scan a pile of books that were say damaged (e.g. ABdamaged AB being users initials) or being relocated to another library e.g. “MOVEDtoXYZ”.

Thank you for starting your posts with RFC. I then know I can ignore them.

There's a similar long-standing RSI, I'll see if I can find it and bump it.

If I have read remarks from developers correctly, we should be seeing a pretty thorough rework of the app this year, and I expect it to add more flexibility and features than what this thread proposes.

OK, so if we wait for LT2.00, will it have the functionality to scan a book's barcode and add a user defined tag to that books entry?

Actually, it would be helpful to be able to either add a predefined tag
or add the book to a designated collection.
or add the book to a designated collection.

>8 JonathonL88: You can already add books to collections from the app.
-- From the app, it's only available from the barcode scan: just under the top bar, there's a white bar that lists collections currently selected plus a blue Edit link.
Your selections persist / become the defaullt for the next book you add using the app.

Sorry for confusion. I am aware of adding a new book via the scanner to a collection. The change I was requesting was in the context of an inventory check using a scanner where
a: it does not ADD that book as a duplicate entry in your library
b: it adds the book to
a specified collection (if not already present)
and/or
a specified tag (if not already present)
