Very true, so in the spirit of moving things forward, I will ask again here:
What were the titles of the seven middle grade books in the bundle? The curious among us thank you for this info...

bumping this thread up
aviannschild, in the Canadians thread we were speculating that Penguin USA does not send to Canada, although it didn't stop some of us from requesting and trying for that selection of 3 they had on offer.

Middle Grade Reader pack rec'd from Little Brown:
Daniel X Alien Hunter by James Patterson
The Mousehunter by Alex Milway
Fortune's Magic Arm by Suzanne Selfors
Suddenly Supernatural by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel
If You're Reading This, It's Too Late by Pseudonymous Bosch
Phenomena: Secrets of the Senses by Donna M. Jackson
Ignatius MacFarland: Frequenaut by Paul Feig
my older two kids are ecstatic! LM10 has asked that I interview him for the reviews (he's a creative, not critical writer)
Anyone have any suggestions for leading questions to ask him (that will cobble together a review?)

Awesome. I hope I was one of the first 25, lol.

4: When I had a child do a guest review for me, I asked her:
Can you tell me what the book what about in a few short sentences?
What did you like most about the book?
Was there anything you didn't like so much?
What did you think of the way the characters interacted? Would you want to be friends with them? Why or why not?
What kind of readers would you recommend this to?

lenoreva - thanks for the tips! This is about what I ask the younger kids ... I love your "would you want to be friends with them ... why/why not?"; that should elicit a full answer -- great input, thank you.

In the other thread quadmama said she was surprised to receive the Middle Grade Reader Pack from Little Brown because she got an out of office email saying that they were all gone.
Lovemybooks and I were saying that we remembered getting an out of office email from Little Brown when we requested the Middle Grade Reader Pack, but that the message stated that some Twilight Pack was all gone. I'm not sure what the Twilight Pack offer actually was, though, because, as far as I know, nobody hear was aware of it.

I'm part of the Kathleen McCleary book blog tour, I'm the Sept. 26th stop, and I got my House and Home book today. It's a very pretty book, and I'm looking forward to reading it. :-D

19- I loved Schooled! I did a cold request for it and got it a few weeks ago! I feel bad though because all the Early Reviewers there were supposed to get it haven't :(
29DevourerOfBooks
Here I've complained all week that I'm overwhelmed with the 13(?!?!?) ARCs I've received this week and now, when I finally have a day-long break from receiving any, I'm disappointed. I really, truly have a problem!

31mint910
29- My pile that started at like 4 books is about to topple over.... and if it did it would land on my poor little laptop. I gotta find a new place for the pile...
32Belladonna1975
I received When We Were Romans yesterday in OK. :)
33caitemaire
no book, but i did get one of those Freezing Point chap sticks with a nice handwritten note from Karen Dionne saying her publisher ran out of books but she want to send something for my trouble.
i would have preferred the book, but the thought is very nice.
i might have to actually buy the book...lol

Today it was Schooled and The Necklace. Oh dear Lord, I used to only have a TBR pile of whatever book was waiting for me on the special order shelf at the library. Now this sucker is as tall as my desk and would probably squash the cat if it fell on him.... C'mon winter!!! And make it a rainy one! I need to spend some serious inside time!!
36Lallybroch
I got The Shiniest Jewel yesterday and When we Were Romans and The Necklace today. I also got Hurry Down Sunshine from LT earlier this week.
37budrfly9
I got The Clinton Diaries in No. Cal today!!! The touchstones are weird for this one. It is an unbound galley. My first!
I got Confessions of a Contractor and City of Refuge earlier in the week.
Its been a fantastic ARC week!

When We Were Romans found its way to Oregon today, via UPS. I feel bad for the author--I requested it on 7/9, which should have been plenty of time for the publisher to get them out before the release date of 7/22 but no dice. It's got zero reviews on Amazon right now.
39GeorgiaDawn
Today I received The Terminal Spy by Alan S. Cowell.
40silverheron
In Culver City, CA I got The Necklace today via UPS. I was starting to wonder about The Terminal Spy but I see it is working its way across the country now.
41BookishRuth
DoB: The same thing happened to me today. Nothing in the mail. Nothing! I have been spoiled with free books.
42virginiahomeschooler
I finally got So Long at the Fair today. It had been delivered to our old house (via UPS) and then went missing. A couple of days ago, my old landlord said that 3 packages were now back on the stoop (I guess UPS had picked them up and then redelivered them), so he pulled them inside this time. So Long at the Fair was one of them, and one was a second copy of The Time Paradox that I had replaced thinking I'd never see it again (I'm thinking it'll make a good blog giveaway). The last was actually a book I apparently won from Simon and Schuster's kids division called Time's Up which came with a cute little backpack that my 6 year old daughter flipped over. Not really an arc, but a free book nonetheless.
Oh, and I got the chapstick from Karen Dionne, too. Very nice.

I got When We Were Romans today. I didn't expect to get it - since I live in NJ, usually I'm one of the first to get books, so I give up on them after a few days of others reporting, and I'd given up on this, too. Makes me wonder if any of the others that I'm missing will turn up too.
44lovemybooks
I got the pack of seven middle grade books from Little Brown, The Necklace, Schooled, Christmas is Murder, A Passion Redeemed, a book for a giveaway, and one other for a blog tour..the post office just left the packages in a box on the porch..oops!
45thekoolaidmom

thekoolaidmom I'm also participating in the book tour for Kathleen McCleary's book House and Home...and it arrived today!
Also, I received Sweetsmoke this week and have been talking to Hyperion about a book give-away on my blog the week before its release date. Will keep you all posted on this on the blog giveaway thread once I know more.
And ...got Devil's Brood...wow, huge book. But having read her books in the past, I know how quickly they read. Can't wait to get to this one.

Found Schooled squished in my itty bitty mailbox today. I know it's OCD and all, but I really hate getting a new book and having the corners all smushed up and bent.
48sydamy
I had just received my FirstLook book, Dracula Dossier, and then the next day I got my minibookexpo book, Chasing Elvis and the day after that, my ER book, Dawning of the Day:A Jerusalem Tale. This has been the greatest week EVER! I don't even know where to start.

I got the Freezing Point chapstick the other day. Yesterday I received Chasing Elvis, which I requested through minibookexpo.
53DevourerOfBooks
Today it was the Little, Brown middle grade readers pack (most of these look very good, a few may have to go) and two copies of Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay just 'in case' I wanted to 'share with a friend' (my friend in the office already snatched it up).
54lovemybooks
#53...from where did you get Sarah's Key?
55DevourerOfBooks
>54 lovemybooks:, One of the publicists at St. Martin's found my blog and emailed me about it. I don't want to necessarily give her direct email, but this page has an address to send emails about review copy inquiries. The paperback is being released at the end of September, so they might be looking to give more out.
56lovemybooks
thanks, I was just curious if someone had finally received a response from the Reader's Group Gold...it appears not. :)
57jennsbookshelves
I received two copies of Schooled today.
58Kegsoccer
I also got Schooled today. And the book When a Man Loves a Woman which I requested from Bostick awhile ago. (not really an ARC)
59caitemaire

My Schooled is a paperback ARC - I guess they ran out and started sending out some hardcovers. Lucky you :)
63littlebookworm
I got a regular ARC of Schooled as well. I started it yesterday because it is pretty close to release and I'm behind on reviews, it's okay so far.
Today I got Descartes' Bones from the UPS man. I wavered on this one when requesting, but now that I've got it, it looks really interesting. Plus it has that freshly printed book smell ...

Nuts! I'm almost done with When We Were Romans and now you're telling me Big Brown's gonna give me another ARC?
I requested Descartes' Bones, too.
I've just started deleting the "New book" and Shelf Awareness emails. I can't look or I'll request! I have 24 on Mt. TBarc and two others in the kitchen Romans and Conquest of Gaul... which is really a Penguin book, but I owe a review of it still.
When will the madness end! :-D

62- Maybe they didn't have the ARC's yet because I got the hardcover maybe 3 weeks ago. But that wouldn't make sense that they would have the hardcovers before the ARC's. Who knows! I'll consider myself lucky!
6924girl
I also received The Terminal Spy today in Arlington, TX.
70virginiahomeschooler
I got Forsaken, which was my ER book for July. My husband keeps asking me when I'm going to be able to read all these books (and you should see the looks I get when I mention wanting to buy a new book or four). I think I'm going to have to start hiding them when they come in the mail.
71mint910
70- My mom told me she was going to burn them as they came in the mail! That was not even funny!!!
72lovemybooks
70 &71 omg, I feel your pain. Honestly, I just always try to get the mail so my roommates aren't shocked. I already have stacks and stacks of books. ;)

The Grift made it to Chicago today, although it was released YESTERDAY. It is a lovely hardcover edition. One of the two books HarperCollins thinks I need to review, The Hunt for the Seventh came as well.
109k00kaburra
Descartes Bones arrived today, I can't wait to read that one. The Terminal Spy came recently as well, and I've started reading it, but it's really not my type of book. I'm not sure why I requested it; I should have known better.

Songbirdz, With When We Were Romans, longer is definately NOT better! It went on a little longer than it should have (in my opinion), but I did like the ending.

On the other hand, I loved When We Were Romans, so you might continue to wish it was longer instead!

"Gene" my UPS guy brought me The Grift today. I can't wait to get to it since I actually do psychic readings from time to time.
I am in Culver City, CA. It is so much fun to watch the books slowly get delivered one section of the US at a time.

UPS brought me The Grift today. I really don't remember requesting it, but that's probably a problem with my memory. The description sounds faintly familiar and it's definitely a book that would interest me.
Mine came without a letter or anything (not that I need one). I've had such a good week and this was a lovely capper. I'm very happy tonight!

Hello everyone! This'll actually be my first post to this group. My mail people haven't come today, so I have nothing new to report there... but I do have a suggestion for keeping track of your ARCs.
I have a small notebook I keep on top of my TBR stacks... When I request a new ARC I write the name, the publisher, and the date I requested it. If I get a confirmation e-mail I'll put that date down as well... when I get the book I write that date down. So it looks like this:
'When We Were Romans' (Doubleday)
7/9 ---- 7/22
This way I can keep track of what I've requested, what I still haven't recieved... plus, I'm watching for a pattern to see if certain publishers are better about sending ARCs or fast shipping or whatnot.
Anyways- hope this idea helps some of you out. It doesn't take a lot of time and this way I'm not double requesting anything.
Cheers!

I started a list in which I track my requests, day requested, day received. It is interesting to see how the books come most in order but across the country. I am only missing a few that I requested, The Broadway Travels books, which I don't think anyone got, Watercooler Effect, Dachensword, City of Refuge, American Wife, Swimming with Strangers, and Guernica.
157saratoga99
#156: That is a great idea. Sometimes, I receive a book, and have no idea why; worse, I have already read it. Anyway, I received The Given Day by Dennis Lehane, The Gate House by Nelson Demille (cold request), and The Night Villa by Carol Goodman (I reviewed her previous book for Bookreporter.com., and it came from them).
158emcnellis16
I received Descarte's Bones in Texas (UPS). I requested it August 1. I never received a confirmation email, so there may still be hope!

If you have a Mac, Bookpedia is the best $18 you can spend to track books, reviews, ARCs, lending, borrowing, etc.
And you can import your lists to LT. And you can try it for free. And I get $0 for plugging this software, I just find it indispensable.

I've started using Google docs to keep track. One of the options is a spreadsheet. Free for Macs or PC.
I can vouch for it being idiot-proof.

I use a plain old Excel table to keep track of what I request, if I get a response, dates, etc. It's easy and keeps me from double requesting.
162jlshall
I use the database feature that came with my Microsoft Works package. Similar to Excel I think, but it's really simple to use - which is good for me because I'm very technologically challenged. But my regular paper list was getting hard to keep up with.

Welcome, PirateColey!
I use the Works spreadsheet. The other things I put on it that I don't think were mentioned are the date I'm notified (if any), release/due date, reading start- and end-dates, and the date I posted the review.
I also have a place on the left side to number the order I plan to read them--it helps me prioritize. If the publisher sent me a confirmation email, that book might get priority over a book that arrives sooner, unannounced, for example.

Today I received Tethered by Amy MacKinnon from Random House. I have absolutely no idea how it came to me - I definitely didn't request it. I don't really mind, though, it looks interesting and it's short. All it came with is a photo of the final cover.
Anyone else get this one and/or have any idea where it came from? If not, I'll just be happy that they have my address in the database and send me random books!

Today the FedEx guy and the UPS guy practically walked in the door together to bring me The Green Beauty Guide by Julie Gabriel (wrapped so it was just about bomb proof) and Last Night I Dreamed of Peace which is evidently the only book Random House is sending out for the Read it Forward program, although it sounds good and is a gorgeous hardback ARC.

I received Descartes Bones last Friday. Yesterday Fed Ex delivered Gone Away World. Today, I received
The American Boys Handy Book by US mail and it was packaged nicely in a box with a letter and catalog from Tuttle Publishing. It was a final copy Hardback and my son is looking forward to reading it. We will most likely read it together and write a review together on my blog.
I also emailed Kim at HCI books about The Green Beauty Guide
and mentioned that I am a book reviewer here and have a blog.
I forgot to post the link to my blog and she emailed back saying she would send the book and wanted the link to my blog. Publicists must realize that we are spreading the work about new books through our book blogging.

I'm sort of scared that if I do get a book from Read It Forward it will be something I don't want to read. I would feel horrible! Are these books coming with any letters of some kind. When sending out random books it seems like it's a shot in the dark that the person receiving it would actually want to read it and then review it. I guess that's just how it goes though?
185virginiahomeschooler
>184 mint910: mint,
The thing about the Read It Forward books is that there's no obligation to review them. So, if it's something you don't care for, you can simply give it away. They stated that if they run out of the book you requested, they may send an alternate. I don't think it's sneaky, really. I prefer that actually to them just not sending anything. It would be different if they were expecting written reviews, but all they say is that they hope we'll read and enjoy the book and tell our family and friends about it.

A question please. Both Testimony and The Road Home are published by the same group. I don't see a lot of ARCs available that I really want but I want these two! If I send requests for each book (seperately), is there a change I could get both? There is a two month time period between their release dates. Is asking for two from the same publisher a no-no? Would I have a better chance if I waited until after I received the first one before asking for the second one?
Thank you all.

Don't they want like visitor stats for your blog when you request an ARC? I wouldn't know what to give them.
241mint910
This is what I'm referring to, they ask you to include info when making a request and this is one of the bullet points:
"specific information about your website, including short description of site and visitors plus traffic information"
You can see it on the right hand side of this page.
http://www.hachettebookgroupusa.com/trade_media_index.aspx
I just may need to write to them if they aren't so concerned with their list ;)

>229 mint910: I'm relatively new to this and these are my first books from HarperTeen (or Harper Collins), so I'm not sure how much they hold you to the review date. I figure, though, that if I can get them in on time I'm more likely to get more books? Not sure if it works that way.

hmm. I have never included that info in my requests, so you could just tell them about your blog, include a link and your review requests and see what happens:) You could also get sitemeter which is free for your blog and then you will have some stats to offer if they ask, but I wouldn't worry about that, like I said above, I request from every publisher and haven't been asked yet.
244lovemybooks
I've been asked for traffic information before. I think it's the sign of a smart and savvy publicist! :)
I use both statcounter and google analytics. Where is your blog hosted? It's relatively easy to install. Plus, I think measuring your traffic is super fun and will also show you what posts are more popular etc. You can see where people are coming from what activities are causing people to visit etc. I recommend it.
When asked I usually say I have so many unique visitors a week and so many subscribers.

It's true that you can allow anyone to access your stats with sitemeter, but you're not required to. You can make them private.
248mint910
Thanks you guys! I actually added sitemeter a few weeks ago and have goggle analytics and some other tracking thing. I guess what I'm sure about is what information to give them. I think in one case I tried to count myself out of the stats but it somehow didn't work. So I'm not sure if my stats are accurate. Personally I don't care but they wouldn't be the best to provide to someone else.
I'll definitely keep Hachette in mind! I was looking around on their site yesterday, does anyone else find it sort of strange for navigation. I didn't feel like there was that much information there.

I've slowed down my ARC requests since I got a bit overwhelmed and I'd like to read a few more books for me. It's a little sad not to get free books all the time, but it makes me feel less guilty about picking up The Last Enchantment while I wait for those books I really want to turn up.

Has anyone received Stalin's Children? I got an email confirmation that I would be receiving it "in the next couple of weeks" on July 21.
265thekoolaidmom
I don't remember if I requested Stalin's Children or not, I haven't received it in either case.
I did receive Something Wickedly Weird: the icy hand in the mail tolday. It looks like a lot of fun, and my review may include one from Mag's as well, as it's geared for ages 9-12. The cover is reminiscent of Lemony Snicket's.

I got the email confirmation for Stalin's Children July 21st as well and have not received it. However, I got my email confirmation for Resistance the same day, and that didn't come until August 4th, so maybe Stalin's Children is still coming.

I need to stop checking this thread. Am envious that you receive mail on Saturdays in the US - the only time I got Saturday mail delivery was for the Harry Potter books, which was on their release dates.

Guernica finally arrived in Oregon today, as did The Icy Hand (Something Something Wickedly Weird). Never seen this on an ARC before: "This uncorrected galley hasn't been proofed or Americanized." I love that. I'll have to be sure to read with a British accent (planning to read it aloud with my boys).

Received Blue Genes today, and yes, I did request it.
Inside is a card requesting feedback to Adrienne Sparks at DoubleDay. The note also says that they will send a copy to a friend or colleague, if I wish, and 'credit' me. So, if anyone is interested in the book, it would seem copies are still easily available.

I recieved an envelope today from Bloomsbury - which was empty! The seal was torn and haphazardly reclosed. I suspect it contained Guernica since people have been receiving it, and I did get a confirmation email about it. I'm disappointed since I really wanted to read this one. I feel like complaining to the post office even though I know I still won't be getting the book.

I think that by October (at the latest) we're going to need to go to two monthly "ARCs Received in the Mail" threads, like "What books came into your home". I can't believe we have 300 posts and the month isn't quite over yet!

In Culver City I received yesterday The Truth and Awakening the Genie Within a Journey of Discovery by Bettye Johnson both from the bostick emails. Today I got the Antique key instead of the Something Wickedly Weird series. I loved the key so much I went ahead and pre-ordered the books. I also received today Shadow of Colossus I remember asking for it at one time but I don't remember when. I think it was quite some time ago.

I got Confessions of a Contractor today. My husband and I were general contractors for years, and with everyone talking about it so much, I just had to write to the author and ask if there were still any copies floating around. (We were on vacation when everybody else requested it, so I missed out that time around.) I can't wait to get into it, we'd had some mighty strange clients over the years ourselves!

I got Guernica today, and my flap wasn't closed at all. The envelope was quite a bit larger than the book, and someone (presumably at the often complained about post office) had wrapped a rubber band around it, so my book was actually still inside, but if they hadn't done that, I'm certain I would've received an empty smushed up envelope. I'm thinking perhaps that whoever packaged these books for Bloomsbury failed to seal them properly (or at all, as in my case and possibly yours). As much as I do blame USPS for most things (like continuing to deliver my mail and packages to a vacant house 10 days after they were supposed to start forwarding them and folding books in half!! to make them fit in my itty bitty mailbox), I think they might not be at fault in this instance.

It was one of my newbie goofs. There was no ad or offer. I sent a request to the person who'd reviewed it, thinking she was the right person as it gave her name and address at the bottom of the page as the "contact regarding reviews". Duh.
She wrote back saying she was just a reviewer but gave me an email address to send a request to. I did and here it is! My biggest problem is figuring out where to find ARCs that are available and who to ask (besides Bostick and Shelf Awareness I mean). I hope the publicists aren't reading these threads.

#334, I actually think it's pretty cool and spent a few minutes moving it back and forth (I'm easily amused), but I imagine it's going to be way distracting when I'm reading, especially because it's extra thick. It's a hologram, for those who didn't request this one.

Oh, yeah, I've done Harper Teen First Look since January - I've gotten 3 or 4 books. But their website's been going downhill for the last couple of months. (can't log in to give them a review, can't get it to take requests for books, now it's been down for at least 2 weeks)
I honestly hated the last book I got from them and tried to constructively and nicely say so. I don't know if that has anything to do with the fact that I was turned down for Nation, but I'm really happy to have gotten it anyway! :)
