ARCs received in the mail, August 2008

We're getting so many ARCs in the mail that we needed a new, faster thread!

2lenoreva
Aug 7, 2008, 1:21 pm

Very true, so in the spirit of moving things forward, I will ask again here:

What were the titles of the seven middle grade books in the bundle? The curious among us thank you for this info...

3icedtea
Aug 7, 2008, 2:18 pm

bumping this thread up

aviannschild, in the Canadians thread we were speculating that Penguin USA does not send to Canada, although it didn't stop some of us from requesting and trying for that selection of 3 they had on offer.

4TooFondOfBooks
Aug 7, 2008, 2:19 pm

Middle Grade Reader pack rec'd from Little Brown:
Daniel X Alien Hunter by James Patterson
The Mousehunter by Alex Milway
Fortune's Magic Arm by Suzanne Selfors
Suddenly Supernatural by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel
If You're Reading This, It's Too Late by Pseudonymous Bosch
Phenomena: Secrets of the Senses by Donna M. Jackson
Ignatius MacFarland: Frequenaut by Paul Feig

my older two kids are ecstatic! LM10 has asked that I interview him for the reviews (he's a creative, not critical writer)

Anyone have any suggestions for leading questions to ask him (that will cobble together a review?)

Awesome. I hope I was one of the first 25, lol.

6lenoreva
Aug 7, 2008, 2:47 pm

4: When I had a child do a guest review for me, I asked her:

Can you tell me what the book what about in a few short sentences?
What did you like most about the book?
Was there anything you didn't like so much?
What did you think of the way the characters interacted? Would you want to be friends with them? Why or why not?
What kind of readers would you recommend this to?

7TooFondOfBooks
Aug 7, 2008, 3:03 pm

lenoreva - thanks for the tips! This is about what I ask the younger kids ... I love your "would you want to be friends with them ... why/why not?"; that should elicit a full answer -- great input, thank you.

>Devourer Just curious what is the Twilight Pack e-mail you were all referring to? Thanks:)

9DevourerOfBooks
Aug 7, 2008, 4:18 pm

>8 nktk:,

In the other thread quadmama said she was surprised to receive the Middle Grade Reader Pack from Little Brown because she got an out of office email saying that they were all gone.

Lovemybooks and I were saying that we remembered getting an out of office email from Little Brown when we requested the Middle Grade Reader Pack, but that the message stated that some Twilight Pack was all gone. I'm not sure what the Twilight Pack offer actually was, though, because, as far as I know, nobody hear was aware of it.

Today it was Schooled and The Necklace. Oh dear Lord, I used to only have a TBR pile of whatever book was waiting for me on the special order shelf at the library. Now this sucker is as tall as my desk and would probably squash the cat if it fell on him.... C'mon winter!!! And make it a rainy one! I need to spend some serious inside time!!

When We Were Romans found its way to Oregon today, via UPS. I feel bad for the author--I requested it on 7/9, which should have been plenty of time for the publisher to get them out before the release date of 7/22 but no dice. It's got zero reviews on Amazon right now.

I finally got So Long at the Fair today. It had been delivered to our old house (via UPS) and then went missing. A couple of days ago, my old landlord said that 3 packages were now back on the stoop (I guess UPS had picked them up and then redelivered them), so he pulled them inside this time. So Long at the Fair was one of them, and one was a second copy of The Time Paradox that I had replaced thinking I'd never see it again (I'm thinking it'll make a good blog giveaway). The last was actually a book I apparently won from Simon and Schuster's kids division called Time's Up which came with a cute little backpack that my 6 year old daughter flipped over. Not really an arc, but a free book nonetheless.

Oh, and I got the chapstick from Karen Dionne, too. Very nice.

I got When We Were Romans today. I didn't expect to get it - since I live in NJ, usually I'm one of the first to get books, so I give up on them after a few days of others reporting, and I'd given up on this, too. Makes me wonder if any of the others that I'm missing will turn up too.

Today it was the Little, Brown middle grade readers pack (most of these look very good, a few may have to go) and two copies of Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay just 'in case' I wanted to 'share with a friend' (my friend in the office already snatched it up).

I got a regular ARC of Schooled as well. I started it yesterday because it is pretty close to release and I'm behind on reviews, it's okay so far.

Today I got Descartes' Bones from the UPS man. I wavered on this one when requesting, but now that I've got it, it looks really interesting. Plus it has that freshly printed book smell ...

64thekoolaidmom
Aug 11, 2008, 6:28 pm

Nuts! I'm almost done with When We Were Romans and now you're telling me Big Brown's gonna give me another ARC?

I requested Descartes' Bones, too.

I've just started deleting the "New book" and Shelf Awareness emails. I can't look or I'll request! I have 24 on Mt. TBarc and two others in the kitchen Romans and Conquest of Gaul... which is really a Penguin book, but I owe a review of it still.

Hello everyone! This'll actually be my first post to this group. My mail people haven't come today, so I have nothing new to report there... but I do have a suggestion for keeping track of your ARCs.

I have a small notebook I keep on top of my TBR stacks... When I request a new ARC I write the name, the publisher, and the date I requested it. If I get a confirmation e-mail I'll put that date down as well... when I get the book I write that date down. So it looks like this:

'When We Were Romans' (Doubleday)
7/9 ---- 7/22

This way I can keep track of what I've requested, what I still haven't recieved... plus, I'm watching for a pattern to see if certain publishers are better about sending ARCs or fast shipping or whatnot.

Anyways- hope this idea helps some of you out. It doesn't take a lot of time and this way I'm not double requesting anything.

Cheers!
~*Coley*~

Aug 16, 2008, 12:06 pm

I started a list in which I track my requests, day requested, day received. It is interesting to see how the books come most in order but across the country. I am only missing a few that I requested, The Broadway Travels books, which I don't think anyone got, Watercooler Effect, Dachensword, City of Refuge, American Wife, Swimming with Strangers, and Guernica.

#156: That is a great idea. Sometimes, I receive a book, and have no idea why; worse, I have already read it. Anyway, I received The Given Day by Dennis Lehane, The Gate House by Nelson Demille (cold request), and The Night Villa by Carol Goodman (I reviewed her previous book for Bookreporter.com., and it came from them).

158emcnellis16

If you have a Mac, Bookpedia is the best $18 you can spend to track books, reviews, ARCs, lending, borrowing, etc.

And you can import your lists to LT. And you can try it for free. And I get $0 for plugging this software, I just find it indispensable.

160ThePam
Edited: Aug 16, 2008, 3:41 pm

I've started using Google docs to keep track. One of the options is a spreadsheet. Free for Macs or PC.

I can vouch for it being idiot-proof.

161JGoto
Aug 16, 2008, 4:36 pm

I use a plain old Excel table to keep track of what I request, if I get a response, dates, etc. It's easy and keeps me from double requesting.

162jlshall
Aug 16, 2008, 5:38 pm

I use the database feature that came with my Microsoft Works package. Similar to Excel I think, but it's really simple to use - which is good for me because I'm very technologically challenged. But my regular paper list was getting hard to keep up with.

163Alirambles
Aug 16, 2008, 6:17 pm

Welcome, PirateColey!

I use the Works spreadsheet. The other things I put on it that I don't think were mentioned are the date I'm notified (if any), release/due date, reading start- and end-dates, and the date I posted the review.

I also have a place on the left side to number the order I plan to read them--it helps me prioritize. If the publisher sent me a confirmation email, that book might get priority over a book that arrives sooner, unannounced, for example.

I'm sort of scared that if I do get a book from Read It Forward it will be something I don't want to read. I would feel horrible! Are these books coming with any letters of some kind. When sending out random books it seems like it's a shot in the dark that the person receiving it would actually want to read it and then review it. I guess that's just how it goes though?

185virginiahomeschooler
Aug 19, 2008, 8:45 pm

>184 mint910: mint,

The thing about the Read It Forward books is that there's no obligation to review them. So, if it's something you don't care for, you can simply give it away. They stated that if they run out of the book you requested, they may send an alternate. I don't think it's sneaky, really. I prefer that actually to them just not sending anything. It would be different if they were expecting written reviews, but all they say is that they hope we'll read and enjoy the book and tell our family and friends about it.

228- Does Harper notice if you don't post your reviews by the given date. It seems in most cases it's almost impossible to do so. I haven't tried for any books through their program in like a year but was thinking of trying again. Just wondering how much they ask after reviews.

Today I found 4 books waiting for me:

Crossed Bones / Tenth Gift by Jane Johnson - Read It Forward Program
Whiskey Rebels by David Liss - LT Early Review Program
The Grift by Debra Ginsberg - SA newsletter
Passenger by Ronald Damien Malfi - direct request

235posthumose
Aug 22, 2008, 8:17 pm

A question please. Both Testimony and The Road Home are published by the same group. I don't see a lot of ARCs available that I really want but I want these two! If I send requests for each book (seperately), is there a change I could get both? There is a two month time period between their release dates. Is asking for two from the same publisher a no-no? Would I have a better chance if I waited until after I received the first one before asking for the second one?
Thank you all.

241mint910

This is what I'm referring to, they ask you to include info when making a request and this is one of the bullet points:

"specific information about your website, including short description of site and visitors plus traffic information"

You can see it on the right hand side of this page.
http://www.hachettebookgroupusa.com/trade_media_index.aspx

I just may need to write to them if they aren't so concerned with their list ;)

>229 mint910: I'm relatively new to this and these are my first books from HarperTeen (or Harper Collins), so I'm not sure how much they hold you to the review date. I figure, though, that if I can get them in on time I'm more likely to get more books? Not sure if it works that way.

>235 posthumose: I'd probably request both in the same email, if it were me. Just say you're interested in review copies of the following books, and so on.

>239 mint910: Never had anyone ask for stats or give any indication that they visited my blog, which is only a little over a month old. Out of 21 requests (apart from LT) I've received 8, plus "yes" emails to 2 additional ones--so, a 50% success rate.

243nktk
Edited: Aug 22, 2008, 11:52 pm

hmm. I have never included that info in my requests, so you could just tell them about your blog, include a link and your review requests and see what happens:) You could also get sitemeter which is free for your blog and then you will have some stats to offer if they ask, but I wouldn't worry about that, like I said above, I request from every publisher and haven't been asked yet.

244lovemybooks
Aug 22, 2008, 11:59 pm

I've been asked for traffic information before. I think it's the sign of a smart and savvy publicist! :)

I use both statcounter and google analytics. Where is your blog hosted? It's relatively easy to install. Plus, I think measuring your traffic is super fun and will also show you what posts are more popular etc. You can see where people are coming from what activities are causing people to visit etc. I recommend it.

When asked I usually say I have so many unique visitors a week and so many subscribers.

If you have sitemeter, anyone can access your stats - and then they don't have to ask.

247anysia
Edited: Aug 23, 2008, 3:09 am

It's true that you can allow anyone to access your stats with sitemeter, but you're not required to. You can make them private.

248mint910
Aug 23, 2008, 7:24 am

Thanks you guys! I actually added sitemeter a few weeks ago and have goggle analytics and some other tracking thing. I guess what I'm sure about is what information to give them. I think in one case I tried to count myself out of the stats but it somehow didn't work. So I'm not sure if my stats are accurate. Personally I don't care but they wouldn't be the best to provide to someone else.

I'll definitely keep Hachette in mind! I was looking around on their site yesterday, does anyone else find it sort of strange for navigation. I didn't feel like there was that much information there.

249lovemybooks
Aug 23, 2008, 12:55 pm

Anyone can access your stats with Statcounter as well....I just don't like to make mine public, since it shows quite a bit of information. I remember how shocked I felt (back when I was a newbie) when I followed someone's public stats and saw all my info there! I think it's a bit of courtesy to keep them private, IMHO

I got Guernica today, and my flap wasn't closed at all. The envelope was quite a bit larger than the book, and someone (presumably at the often complained about post office) had wrapped a rubber band around it, so my book was actually still inside, but if they hadn't done that, I'm certain I would've received an empty smushed up envelope. I'm thinking perhaps that whoever packaged these books for Bloomsbury failed to seal them properly (or at all, as in my case and possibly yours). As much as I do blame USPS for most things (like continuing to deliver my mail and packages to a vacant house 10 days after they were supposed to start forwarding them and folding books in half!! to make them fit in my itty bitty mailbox), I think they might not be at fault in this instance.

#334, I actually think it's pretty cool and spent a few minutes moving it back and forth (I'm easily amused), but I imagine it's going to be way distracting when I'm reading, especially because it's extra thick. It's a hologram, for those who didn't request this one.

I received Eva Etzioni-Halevy's The Triumph of Deborah today, sent to me by the author by way of Amazon. Gosh the script is small. I hope it's not a problem while I read.

Today is a good day. I got Nation by Terry Pratchett. The thing is, I'm pretty sure I got an email saying that I wasn't getting it. This is definitely the arc I've wanted more than any other, so I am psyched. All those poor arcs sitting on my shelf may have to hold off a little longer. Not sure I can wait to read this one.

I received The Late Bloomer's Revolution, which I got directly from the author. Have already dipped into it and it sounds like it's going to be great fun!

I got the key instead of Something Wickedly Weird too. Kind of a bummer since I wanted to read the book, but a nice thought (and a nifty key). Yesterday I got a notice from the post office that I had a parcel waiting for me so I dropped by today only to find The American Boy's Handy Book waiting! And it's a nice hardback publication copy, packaged in a box along with an ordering catalog. Thanks, Tuttle Publishing! Looks fun.

Regular post-officer delivered 'Guernica' in Michigan today. Finished hardback copy... which is funny, because I ARCed this book months ago. But it's still nice. And it may make a nice birthday gift for a bookie friend of mine. =)

ps: LOVED this book!!

Ditto Nation! I've been lurking here since y'all started the group, but I don't see much I want to request, because I'm really only interested in reviewing YA (and some MG and some Teen).
Nation was the only thing I've requested and I was so happy to get it!
(loving Terry Pratchett - in a book-loving platonic kinda way!) Yay Shelf Awareness!

#356, Did you sign up for Harperteen first look (if you're in the US)? Their site is down right now, but when they're back up, you can sign up to request YA books. I got 2 good ones from them.

Blue Genes found its way to Oregon via UPS Ground today.

Aug 29, 2008, 8:01 pm

Oh, yeah, I've done Harper Teen First Look since January - I've gotten 3 or 4 books. But their website's been going downhill for the last couple of months. (can't log in to give them a review, can't get it to take requests for books, now it's been down for at least 2 weeks)

I honestly hated the last book I got from them and tried to constructively and nicely say so. I don't know if that has anything to do with the fact that I was turned down for Nation, but I'm really happy to have gotten it anyway! :)

#360, Somewhere I read they're planning on relaunching their website "in the fall," whatever that means. Soon, I hope. What book did you hate? Just curious.

Aug 29, 2008, 9:19 pm

#361 Hmmm, interesting - I kinda thought they might have decided to do Facebook/Myspace instead. We'll see, I guess.
I hated Blonde of the Joke. The little review I did here is NOT the review I sent them. I've heard that the book has been delayed until next year, so maybe my dislike wasn't a big surprise to them. It's too bad, I loved the author's earlier books.

klmnca, I loved Confessions of a Contractor! you can read my review here and a bit about the book signing I went to with the author here. He's really terrific - very charming and obviously excited.

I've gotten swamped with books in the last few days. Shadow of Colossus, The Last Days of Krypton, The Longest Trip Home (which I don't remember requesting but probably did), Nation and The Dharma King. That's it! No more books for me!

I'm actually thinking of asking a friend who loves the whole Superman myth to do a guest review of Krypton. Take one book off the pile and probably put it in the hands of someone who's more familiar with the story.

Right, the regular US Harper Collins site is fine. It's the Canadian site and Harperteen.com, the site of the Harper Collins Teen First Look program we were talking about in posts 361 and 362, which are down.

The Longest Trip Home by John Grogan... showed up in my mailbox either Friday or Saturday while I was away. I'm SO excited, because I really wanted to read this one. It came with a note saying if I had my review in by Aug 30 that I'd get a finished copy of the book... Umm... the book didn't show up untill the Aug 29 or 30.

Side note: Mexican Bowl Fishing was mediocre and Blue Genes was WONDERFUL! Was a good reading weekend.
