Hi, Kath -

Stopping by the newish thread to send you my love and tell you that you are someone I think about very often.

Still kind of bowled over by the drama that is part of my life right now. I didn't create it, thank goodness ... but I get to live it! Whoosh. Not too fun, just saying.

'Hope to add to my Wishlist some of the good books that you have recently posted here and on your previous thread, esp., Tana French's latest book.

13. CATHERINE Coulter rd.. as if I could bear to have the other (&*()&Y*'s books in my home.

Her books are nice mysteries.. she has surprised me a time or two..
I have only read these three books mentioned in my list. I didn't like The Cove. Double Take was pretty good as was Riptide. They have similar romantic twists in them, but it wasn't too romance-y.. just .. just boy meets girl and they fall for each other. Not all sorts of wanton sex or anything.

Entertaining. I am not trying to improve my mind.... just relax so
:-P ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ on you!

I have to say this. I am so sad that Teddy is gone. I used to work for his periodontist. I met him several times. He was kind, funny and genuine. His eyes twinkled when he smiled. He would stand there and talk to the staff while his assistant looked pained. His own staff called when he was there often, and they were nice too.

Stand Edward Kennedy next to any other politician today and they pale.
In fact, many family men pale in comparison. This man stepped up for his family, and for us. He has been in my thoughts for a long time. Gentle journey Teddy. We will miss you.

23richardderus
Aug 27, 2009, 1:58 pm

Me too, mckait. He was the last of a generation of good, decent people trying to do the right thing by those who had nothing, and lost it. His failings were those of any of us who inhabited that pressure cooker world of constant scrutiny and easy pleasure. But he grew out of it, and it will be his right-thinking championship of the least and the last that will survive.

I hope.

Just want to add my thoughts to some of those expressed here ... to me the late Senator "Ted" Kennedy truly grew up in the public eye. He paid his dues for his mistakes and was an elegant, dedicated man who represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the people who needed him most in our country, including his own family.

You will be missed. Here's to you, Dear Senator.

I agree with everyone's sentiments on the late Senator Kennedy. I fear that there will never be another like him, someone who dedicated his life to public service to the extent that he did. Yes, he had his flaws, but in comparison to many of the current politicians such as (substitute your favorite example here; mine is Governor Sanford of South Carolina), he stands head and shoulders above him. I haven't followed the news or read the NYT over the past two days; has there been speculation on who Gov. Patrick will select to replace him?

27mckait
Aug 28, 2009, 5:42 am

Those will be hard shoes to fill. I don't envy anyone who comes after.
So much tragedy in that family and he remained strong and optimistic and good.
I met him several times when he kept his appointments where I worked. We all loved him madly. I will never forget that voice and eyes.. and that ready smile.
Good man.

An ARC from vine arrived yesterday Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women by Harriet Reisen.. so that will be my read for today after work. At work I am reading a book called God by someone Turian. It is definitely not what I would normally read, but it was written by the sil if a social worker in the bldg...
and she said she thought of me immediately and would I read it. I will..
I will even review it on my blog. It is well written, and the story of a woman's experience in finding God. Clearly she needed something in her life. She was too hard on herself to find happiness without help.

and what's wrong with cheese crackers? they're staples in my diet. Those and potato chips - my perfect reading n 'puter companions. Although having spent the better part of last night in the company of some very tall and skinny models and feeling like their garden toad, I may have to seriously consider alternating crackers with carrot sticks!;-(

that should be flat patties from costco. They are precooked angus burgers and very flat.

As for cheese crackers? nothing wrong with the at all. I love them .But they are a snack not dinner. Or maybe they are lunch.. I often have them for lunch :) i keep thinking though, that I eat like a twelve year old boy or something..
not good.

don't eat carrots! you could turn orange. I have seen it happen. consider yourself warned. stick to chips and crackers.

38richardderus
Aug 28, 2009, 10:21 pm

Cheese crackers? You mean like those new Wheat Thins white cheddar things? What's wrong with those?

They sell precooked hamburgers at Costco? I thought it was a store, not a restaurant. Does it have takeout service?

I have the uneasy feeling I'm not in the loop here....

And cameling dearest, you could only be a garden toad in the company of Olympian goddesses. Ordinary women look at you the way you look at those models...trim, lithe, lovely lassie that you are.

39mckait
Aug 29, 2009, 7:35 am

richard dear, I at least am talking about salty crackers with slices of cheese.
They are good. I also like the white cheddar things so much I refrain from buying them.

I find myself buying a lot of those just heat this up for a bit things lately. With Dan unwilling or refusing or whatever, to cook for himself.. and him on 2-10..
I turn to those things once or twice a week for him. The angus burgers are actually pretty good. I found these buns that are very flat wheat buns. they are no bigger than the typical bottom of a bun. I live them!!! Oh and Costco does have takeout service, no delivery. You can also eat there. Nothing fancy, but I get a coupon for pizza now and then, It is edible, not terrific.. The rotisserie chicken is fabulous and I buy one any time I go. The ribs are good too.

Frankly I love costco. I hate to shop so I buy certain things in bulk freeze them in smaller pkgs ( even shredded cheese) and I can stay away from the local store. And they sell books. They open way too late though.

I've heard it said that if you eat broccoli you turn green
If you eat zucchini you turn yellow
If you eat tomoatoes you turn read
and if you eat tofu you walk around looking like a colorless, soft blob.

I understand the being exhausted. I worked a twelve hour day yesterday. I'm getting way too old for this!

I hope you get some rest this weekend. I'm heading to the library to hide out.

Maybe I saw this is one of the many Roald Dahl books I read earlier this year. (I'm joking of course)

>#39 - Kath -

I, too, love the convenience of shopping at Costco.

I'll seek out and try the Angus Burger - Flat Patties and look for the flat buns. I've used the rotisserie chicken by skinning and de-boning it and using the meat to prepare white chili chicken with hominy (lye processed corn kernels, not likely done at home) instead of beans and it (Rotisserie chicken) makes it so much easier. Plenty good enough for special/informal parties and for family and good friends.

I will also try CATHERINE Coulter's Double Take in the near future, due to reading your thread and that you liked it.

Hope you get some good rest and have a great weekend.

Stopping in to say Hi. *Waves*

I too am very sad at Ted's passing.

I have not been on-line a lot last week. Too much work and real life. I have actually been falling asleep reading when I get home (after 10 pm) and have not had dinner about 3 times last week.

I too buy prepared stuff at BJs. Recently a box of Blueberry pancakes that I can take 3 and nuke with Bacon from a box and make a quick dinner that way. I also have used the Angus Cheeseburgers in a box for lunch. Had to add cheese, theirs is too skimpy. Also tried their Grilled Chicken Burgers, I still shudder to think of them. Couldn't eat more than a couple out of the box.

Many veggies are good, especially with gobs of butter on them. Have never changed color due to them.

Neither Coulter appeals to me, for different reasons though.

mckait : I like carrots but I doubt I could eat enough to turn me orange though ... they're a bit to hard

I love all sorts of cheese crackers. I found some different ones in a supermarket here that are really yummy, and bought 2 small boxes together with some nice cheese and pate for snacks while I work, read or watch tv in my hotel room.

thank you for the wonderful compliment, richard. alas, women in Hong Kong are all tiny, delicate creatures, and I feel like an Amazonian warrior next to them.... hence, I hang out more with my expat American, English, Indian and French friends who are at least more substantially fleshed out. :-)

Kath - Have you ever seen 'You've Got Mail'? The Fox Books superstore opens, Meg Ryan in her little quirky Shop Around the Corner is trying to lure in customers by "putting up more twinkle lights." George, one of her loyal employees, throws up his hands and admits defeat. "This place is a tomb!" he cries, picking up his coat, "I'm going to the nut shop where it's fun..."

That is the shop today. It's Bank Holiday weekend and my only company is a Kitkat and a fly stuck in the fluorescent tube over my head. I would like to go home to a book and a cup of tea but my mother is relentlessly optimistic that if we stay open we might just make it worth the electricity.

#51 re: the symbols in your post: Kath, I'm on a PC, and some of them are showing up as different symbols, but a lot of them are just squares to me:

#46 has 2 squares and a heart in the first row, and a square at the end of the last line.

#47 has a mix -- face, square, something (screen is too small to make out what) and 2 squares.
Then at the end of the next line (after "pleasure") a bunch of punctuation/symbols and 2 squares . . .
"oh heck" is bracketed by squares, then the number 6, 2 squares, and the number 3/4, , and the whole last line is squares.

Is that information helpful?

Sep 1, 2009, 11:42 am

Good morning Kath.
I am sorry about yesterday for all of you who had a "red Monday". Hopefully today will be better for you.
We are having a blue Tuesday at our house and I am hoping I can get over it before the hubby wakes up.
Out of our six cats, two consistently come in to be fed and hang out and out to potty and sleep in the house. They are "my cats". All of ours are either rescue or feral. The others have a kitty door in the pantry and stay in the yard or pantry hanging out and only come in occasionally. My husband is not a cat person and while I was gone for those two weeks, he stopped letting any of the cats in and fed them all in the pantry. So one of "my" cats (the siamese) began going to the place across the street to hang out and only came home in the A.M. and P.M. to eat. When I got home I was retraining him to stay home. Well, apparently last night he wanted out and hubby let him out. The grandsons found him dead lying right behind the front tire of my car this morning when they came before school. He didn't appear to have any injuries, but he was healthy and was eating and everything was normal with him last night when I went to bed. I think he got tapped by a car and had internal injuries most likely. So this morning my daughter, myself and both boys were crying our eyes out and after I got them off to
school, I went out in the rain and began digging his grave. When it started to pour down, I came in and will finish when it lets up.
And I know it really isn't Roger's fault, but I hope he sleeps all day. I really do not want to even see him or talk to him right now I am so upset.

Good morning Kath.
I am sorry about yesterday for all of you who had a "red Monday". Hopefully today will be better for you.
We are having a "blue Tuesday" at our house and I am hoping I can get over it before the hubby wakes up.
Thank you for letting me use your thread to vent. My therapist was busy:-(

Just had news that my great aunt passed away today.
She was 95. She was a spunky, fun strong generous woman.
It is hard to mourn her death too much, because she managed to
wring every bit of life out of the time she had. In recent years she was
unable to really be herself. I wish her a gentle journey, and a joyous reunion with
her sisters..

whew.

another long day. Went to B&N with my sister to pick up a book for her.. and ended up taking her to the ER. She is still there with her husband. 5.5 hrs and they still haven't done anything but bloodwork.

This is why people die on ER waiting room floors.

103curlysue
Sep 6, 2009, 8:46 pm

your right...immediate treatment is given if you come in by ambulance, but then again you still wait in the back for a doctor or nurse

in florida they will send you a gift card to a local deli for a sandwich of your choice if they think you have waited to long in the ER...wonder if they do that for the people or their families who don't come out of the ER???

what happened to your sis. hope everything is OK

No.. she was picking up a book she had ordered...
She was determined to get it.. I didn't realize how bad off she was because she was out waiting for me, stepped into the car.. and sat. She could barely walk. She insisted on going in for her book.. I dragged her out and..

Anyway.. my dx was pancratitis and bleeding ulcer.

After more than 8 hours of waiting and testing they said she had pancreatits and a probable bleeding ulcer. Why not just ask me, says I?

Anyway, they finally gave her a room. I will go up in a bit..

Thanks for the good wishes all. I am certain she will be okay.. I "feel" it.
She lost her job on saturday ( good thing I guess) so she is depressed about that as well. The people wanted someone full time and she couldn't do it. They told her while she was at the church festival. Nice, eh?
They knew for a week, but instead of letting her know at work or home...
good riddence!

eta to turn off bold that sowed up from nowhere :(

Besides the pancreatitis, they think she has gall stones.. test for that forthcoming, possible surgery.

That and the ulcer.. and she's diabetic.

That insurance bullcrap.. shouldn't a cat scan tell the tale?
The last time she was in the hospital she was there for 9 days..
they wouldn't allow her to eat in case she needed sergery. but for all the tests.. some done 2x.. they sent her home and said they had no idea..
no further comment..

anyway.. I will tell her that my friends from LT wish her well. Good energy is always welcome!

speedy recovery to your sis...

the lab situation is....i emailed her letting her know of your suggestions regarding contacting the vet, humane society, and i thought of pet stores like petco, petsmart

also found on line a site for florida dog adoptions, they have an area where people can post what kind of dog their looking for... i found 5 people in florida looking for labs, most want puppies but 1 wanted a 3-4 year old ( with persuasion and a little sweet talkin...maybe they'll take the 2)....can only hope

today i thought of something else... most reputable breeders will not only take back the dogs that they sold but some will take in their breed..to avoid them going to a shelter etc.

think i might email her again and see if she has tried that...i saw quite a few lab breeders in florida on the web *fingers and toes crossed *

i'll keep you up to date as i get info... :)

Hugs and kisses to your sister, Kath. I hope she feels better soon ... and wasn't that impressive foresight on her part to go get the book she wanted before going to the hospital .. at least she has something to read while she's in there. ;-)

I don't understand how ER can be called ER when they keep people waiting there for such a long time. I've been to ER twice in the last 3 years, once to visit someone who had a heart attack and once with my husband who thought he had a mild heart attack (but who, it turned out was having muscle spasms because he had tried out a new push up gadget the day before and apparently didn't read the instructions properly and so did it incorrectly) and each time, we were kept waiting for close on 6 hours. I would not be surprised if I heard that 60% of ER visitors died there while waiting to be seen by a doctor much less treated.

I'm glad your sister has been warded and I hope she responds quickly to the treatment and will be home soon.

Another victim of FarmTown! My auntie corrupted my sister very recently. Yesterday we were working together at the shop and she spent the whole morning 'watching her strawberries grow', and wouldn't let me have any lunch until she'd 'harvested' them and 'planted more'. It continues to amaze me that the very people who decided to become teachers, school administrators and care givers for young people with disabilities are unable (seemingly) to care for their valuable, indispensable employees who are "hands on" with the young ones. IT IS EXHAUSTING WORK!

Is there a good HR person or advocate for you and others working there at your school?

If not, just let me know and I will drive up with a BIG baseball bat and sit in your classroom ALL day and keep the people who cannot think about you away from you ... so that you are able to take care of yourself in addition to the children assigned to you.

I HATE it when people can't think about other people well. They are so very fortunate to have you working there, by golly. You are the best of the best.

You go play farmer or whatever it takes to give you the comfort and distraction you need and deserve. I only wish I was there to lead a picket line for workers rights in the situation(s) that you are finding yourself in these days.

O' course, you don't wanna get me REALLY mad now do you? (This addressed to the rule makers for the helpers who make such a huge difference for everyone)

I'm sorry, too. *Huffing audibly* *Arms crossed over chest*

Weekends do fly by, don't they? I have been writing a blog post ( poor neglected blog) in my head about lying. When did it become an accepted practice? It has gone on for so long, but the lies get bigger, they get worse, too. Worse because those telling them consider it to be okay. Bah.

further, why does it make me so crazy. If it is not me lying, why do I feel responsible for lies told around me . Am I too weary to fight it any more? Maybe so.

Hmmm. Someone's upset. A lie has reared up and bitten you, maybe?

Faith in human nature is hard to come by in this day and time. When did lying become acceptable? I think Watergate accelerated the existing trend to *looking* for lies, though I doubt me much that there are actually more of them. Humans lie. It's part of what we do. After all, what is fiction if not a set of organized lies that can illuminate greater truths?

222mckait
Sep 20, 2009, 7:51 am

I did that too Tad...
left it for ages. Then my son wanted me to see something he had put up there.. so back I went. FarmTown is a game. You earn coins and build a pretty farm. It really can suck you in.

you plow, plant and harvest. Then get coins, people send you gifts, you add neighbors ( if it isn't playing up and not allowing you, as mine is ) and
create a place you like.

There are animals, flowers , buildings that you can have....
there are other farm apps.. this is by far the best and the only game like this I have ever played. I have always stuck with word games and things like bejeweled if I felt like a game..

The Facebook world's gone mad! My auntie corrupted my sister, who then wouldn't let me have lunch in the shop the other day 'until she'd harvested her strawberries'. She in turn corrupted Mum, who was very excited when Hannah emailed her from Uni Fresher's Week to tell her that there was a 'special deal' on 'a hot air balloon with a sheep stuck in the basket'. Saskatoonis/FarmTown/cyber-Valium - I'm beginning to think that you are definitely onto a way to de-stress and get some good space in your cranium. That is so good.

I've seen WAY too much lying in my day, too. (I am older than dirt). I like it that you are writing your thoughts about this wide-spread practice. I think that as for myself, my lying, ... it started with fear of not being okay without the content I lied about or with fear of being punished if I told the truth.

Don't know, Kath. Your post has given me a push to think about my own truths and the lies that I tell myself or tell others. Glad you mentioned the written word, also. Hmmmmmmmmn.

I agree with you about lying. Sometimes I think it bothers me so much because I believe what I'm told, and it is infuriating to me to find out that I was played for a fool. I often trace the decline of my marriage to the one lie he ever admitted telling me. A very small insignificant one, but I couldn't get over the fact that he would lie to me. About anything.

One of my favorite scenes in the late, lamented "Firefly" series was when the crew of Serenity went into a brothel, and the young, naive-seeming girl who keeps everything on the ship running chirps, "Oh look! They got boy-whores!" while her crewmates all squirm and blush.

It's a crime that series was canceled. The only positive note was that they canceled it early enough that Whedon still had budget left for Serenity. It's probably my favorite movie in the Western-Masquerading-As-SciFi genre. :-)

I love the DVD's of the TV show and the movie, Serenity, also.

Nerd-city here on LT.

ROTF/LMAO - I'm placing my super-duper ear plugs in right now against your sweet siren's call from the back forty acres. You vixen. Sweet & sly!!!

I guess it would really have to be some kind of filter on my Internet service provider to prevent Farmtown from being seen on my 'pooter screen. Hmmm? Is it contagious, like a virus? No? Just addictive and soothing like other drugs?

Is having lots of fun a drug? No, no, a thousand times NO!!! Enjoy dear Kath. I'm afraid to go to my Facebook page for fear of the magnetic pull of THE FARM people. It is getting close to All Hallow's Eve ya know. Children of the Corn an' all that kinda stuff. You know Mel Gibson, "Signs," the movie. All that stuff. Just saying.

You are the bestest woman.

With love,

Ruthie

PS - Don't give up on me getting on board with the hayride eventually.

I am the daughter of a Tennessee Hillbilly and a beautiful Georgia Peach. Both had farming as a backdrop along with the chores and animals in their "growing-up-days". Sometimes it is how they got by (had enough to eat) during the depression. You've heard the stories I'm sure.

Don't put any more of those animal pictures on your thread. They are too cutesy for me and their big old eyes are looking at me now ... gotta run ... fast ...

#269 I'm also the grandaughter of farmers, at least on my Dad's side. (Mom's side was railroad folks.) But during the Great Depression, Grandpop lost the family farm . . . apparently there was quite a scene when the bank agents and sheriff's men came to evict them . . . :(

No wonder I turned out so combative!

Do the pigs actually look like that or is it just the logo that makes them look so scary?! Hate to say it (hope Mum doesn't see this)... but the pigs on FarmVille are cuter! *dives for cover*

*smiling* You, my dear are shameless and relentless in your love of Farmtown, and your desire to have your buddies here at LT succumb to its charms.

Have a good Saturday, Kath.

My DH and I are going to Native Nurseries here in Tallahassee this morning for their annual Organic Day. Local farms, dairies, herb growers, etc. will be there and the food is terrific to sample. I think you would enjoy it, too. Wish you were visiting.

Then ... on to other errands, including picking up Dog on It: A Chet and Bernie Mystery at the Main Library from the reserve desk. Yeah, "he" sucked me in, although I must at least admit it was already on my TBR cyber stack.

With love,

Ruthie
