We've got a new book-display page in the works that needs to know the size of images before it loads them—in order to get the spacing of the "shelf" right.

Unfortunately, LibraryThing hasn't previously collected Amazon-image sizes. We're doing it now, but we need help filling in past images. We can't request all 4-million-odd images ourselves—it would bog down the server, and send our traffic through the roof.

So, I made a page:
http://www.librarything.com/test_imageloading.php

The page loads images in your browser, sizes them and sends back the information to LibraryThing. Then it waits about 10 seconds and does it again.

That's a very manageable load for anyone not on dial-up—not much more data than browsing around the site normally. You'd do us a favor if you left the window open while for an hour, or all day. You'll help us build up the sizing information we need to make the site prettier. If 10, 100 or 1,000 users help us, we can do this in hours or days, not weeks.

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks. I added Amazon links to the images, so you can find out more about books, and to mollify Amazon with a few sales, if they don't like us collecting the data this way...

I'll probably cap members to X thousand images, so people don't feel obligated to do it forever.

Meanwhile, however, I'm taking a shower (yes, TMI).

I'm a big help. :)

On a serious note note since we're talking about the covers and their resizing, when you go into the Add Books tab and do a search, usually the cover thumbnails are the last to load and this usually jumps the page around a bit. I know I've hit the wrong title a few times due to this jumping. Since all the thumbnails in this case are of the same height, can some allowance be made via CSS to allocate this spacing when the output is formatted?

Does that make sense?

Watching the estimated completion time is mesmerizing, like when watching a download bar. Every page load, it gets earlier by a few minutes... when I started, it was at sometime Tuesday morning (about 10am GMT), and now it's 10pm Monday GMT.

I wish that clicking on a cover opened the amazon page in a new tab/window, but it's not a big deal. It's probably not even intended behavior to have us watching the page as a form of entertainment. :P

White covers with red trim? That's what I saw.

I noticed though that the timeout is now set to 5k milliseconds or 5 seconds instead of the announced 10 seconds. I peaked wondering if I could stick this up on one of my servers for the day.

22,23> My first thought was that it was to limit bandwidth hits from refreshing the page, but that doesn't make much sense, since the 3.9mil would have to be served up eventually anyway.

I'm wondering now if the 50k mightn't be to limit the number of hits on Amazon's servers from any particular IP (if that makes a difference). It could also be to give more folks a chance to "help".

(really kevmalone, under this heavy disguise)
We have a family Bookmooch (free) account so friends on LT can pre-mooch, and it keeps my personal account clean. It's somewhat moribund, however it allows me to continue with the download.
So the limit seems to be account, rather than ip dependent
I'll keep going, unless someone calls "foul" on this for abuse.

48timspalding
Aug 1, 2010, 3:04 pm

Okay, I've allowed you to go to 100,000. I'm a little worried that Amazon will get annoyed, although we actually fetch far more covers than this every day. (Every time you hit your catalog, and many other pages.) So, go buy something from Amazon.

Incidentally, I should be doing this by leveraging the catalog. I avoided it because the two JavaScript libraries in question conflict—or at least, I don't know how to get them to play nice. Also, I'm requesting a specific size. Although Amazon is rounding the size somewhere, if I request all the same size, at least they will be rounding in the same way, as it were.

53timspalding

It's kind of neat to see how publisher runs work.

At Houghton Mifflin we'd buy huge swaths of ISBNs and then give them internal meanings. So, in theory, if you knew the ISBN for the grade 5 Social Studies book, you could figure out the grade 6 Math book. In theory, except that things got screwed up from time-to-time, as you'd expect. Two books get the same ISBN. Two different ISBNs printed on outside and inside cover, etc. I imagine other publishers have other systems.

This knowledge is, however, all arcane. Nobody publishes or tracks it.

54SilentInAWay
Edited: Aug 1, 2010, 3:32 pm

It's interesting how the covers of books I own jump out of the crowd. It's like facial recognition -- I don't have to think or carefully scan the page or anything. Bang! -- there's a book I own.

Reaping the benefits of millenia of evolution, I suppose -- the same skill that helped our ancestors instantly recognize predators...

#58: Yes, great fun. I wonder how pictures/second is computed, It seems to change fairly slow, so I guess it is looking at the total number of pictures and the total number of seconds since this started. If so it is probably underestimating the current speed a bit. I think the speed is more like 100 covers a second than the 90 reported.
If so, we'll finish an hour earlier,

Of course we'll both max out long before that :-)

#79: It wouldn't surprise me if it's never been printed. The guy who does those has a script to rip Wikipedia and government sources and the like and dump it into a book, making adding a new book virtually free.

I'm running through a publisher that has apparently ripped off Google Books. I wouldn't mind the reuse of public domain material if they took the responsibility to at least check that all the pages scanned right. Instead they say "We believe this work is culturally important, and despite the imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print as part of our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works worldwide", like they're actually making it more accessible.

>What happens when amazon arbitrarily changes images for a given ISBN?

A good point. In general, I don't think the image's aspect ratio will change very often. ISBNs relate to the printed matter inside, not to the cover. So you can change covers on a book and keep the ISBN. But if you reprint it with different paper you should get a new ISBN.

Should...

#157 Pick a number between four million and eight million. Perform an operation on some bunch of data fifty at a time in multiplexes of somewhere between ten and ten thousand. Admit that some of those multiplexes are going to fail before fulfilling their fifty operations. Subtract all those operations from the number you first thought of. Repeat until you get to exactly zero.

I don't know!

159timspalding
Aug 3, 2010, 11:54 am

To make it fast, I had to randomize the picking such that, on average, 1/20 were done more than once. True randomization was too slow.

I'm calculating the "true" number now.

174theapparatus
Aug 3, 2010, 3:23 pm

Amazon comes from Amazon. User covers are those that have been uploaded by users. When you pull up a work and click on the Change Cover edit link along the left, you'll see the covers split into the 2 groups.

Perfect example would be the Harry Potter books:

#173 - The images for the Amazon covers are on the Amazon site, so they had to be retrieved to get the size. The user covers are on the LT site so the size is available.

Tim needs member help because 8 million amazon cover requests--all generated from LibraryThing computers--would not only burden the servers, but would also attract the attention of the evil empire (not that we're doing anything in violation of amazon's policies or anything--but it's best to let sleeping dogs lie, no?). That's also why there is a cap to the number of covers processed by each user.

The dimensions for member-uploaded covers are either already known or can at least be determined in-house without querying amazon.
