you too, huh, Kath? I loathe Peter in Three Pines too. He's whiney and so unsupportive of Clara I could scream. I really was quite happy at the thought that he may have been a murderer in one of the earlier books.

Hello all and welcome !!

I keep wondering why she keeps him around.....He would be a great victim..especially if he is a victim of his own nastiness and stupidity.

Or, if he is terminated outside of Three Pines, like at Clara's show?

The only thing is that Clara really loves him, and I think she'd collapse if something happened to him.

"Starred"....as usual...

Not being a "Penny-ite"...i can't comment on the latest installment. A friemd has recommended a mystery series to me, however, by John Brady....set in Dublin....featuring Inspector Matt Minogue...i read Kaddish in Dublin years ago....this one set in the Jewish community...so far I found that one...Unholy Ground, A Stone of the Heart, and All Souls. I just remember that the mysteries/protagonist are complicated and quirky....just a suggestion

oh, and the eggs on my Tuna Pizza are beaten (like scrambled eggs) and poured over the cheese/onion/bacon/tuna already lying on the crust....then the whole thing is baked. It's like a big open-faced tuna sammie..I like it....and can hear Richard...gagging in the wings....I'm so, so, *snort* sorry

;-}

18alcottacre
Aug 30, 2010, 3:55 am

Geez jude, now I have to worry about you and your suggestions...
I have planted Brady on my list...

Stasia, nothing personal, mere self defense.

Suz.. occasional chatter makes threads and makes my day too.. lol

Bonnie..I loved that one. It was and remains my favorite.

Claudia, crab salad sounds yummy! So does your plan for today!

Hi Terri and Stephen... !

Hi Kath, gotcha starred again. It sounds like the Three Pines series is holding up well. That's good, cuz I have three books to go. I'm taking No. 4. with me for the airplane when we go to our Maryland wedding this week end. That way I won't care if there are delays!

27BookAngel_a

23- I agree with you...if everyone in Three Pines was perfectly nice all the time, it would not be as compelling. I think there needs to be less likable characters. It's more real this way.

89. The Mind Tree by Tito Mukhopadhyay

4 stars.

This is a book written by a young man with autism.
The writing is absolutely lyrical, philosophical and profound.
I have to say this book just makes me believe all the more
in reincarnation. No young man could speak in such a way.
He sees colors in things such as coughs, describes his mothers heart..
and has an astonishing depth of understanding.

Assuming that this book is what it purports to be, this young man is a miracle.

38Ape
Aug 30, 2010, 8:49 pm

I'm so glad you liked it, Kath.

Assuming that this book is what it purports to be

Yes, that was the one 'issue' I had. But I snooped around online and did fine some articles about the young man on some very well-known websites, so...*shrug*

Regardless, the fact that the boy could really write in such a way...it's fantastic.

Worked half a day..have some appts today

Yesterday the heat was pretty bad in the room. Had a hard time breathing by 4 pm. Came home with a headache that turned into a migraine. Went to bed feeling pretty ghastly. After an hour or so, got up and took Dramamine and more excedrine.. lots of water.

I felt a little better by morning. I am hoping the a.c is fixed by tomorrow.

When I think of Peter, I think of an old saying of my grandmother's, "If she can live with him, you can look at him." Which in this case, I guess, needs amended to read about him.

If Clara loves him, I'll try to believe there must be something lovable about him. At least until he gets whacked.

Hi Kath!

The title of "The Wave" grabbed me, but the description did seem to focus on surfing. I was hoping you would report otherwise. Oh well... at least that is one book I can let ride... out on a wave.
Our forecast:
90's tomorrow, 80's next day, 70's on Sat and 60's on Sun. There's hope. If I never see another day over 70, it will be too soon for me. They cancelled school up here today cuz the classrooms hit 80. Mainers can take snow, but not heat! Take care!

Sep 2, 2010, 6:43 am

Kath...
My partner raised his three children. His wife decided to book on out when the youngest was less than two. The others were five and seven. She wanted to be "free" to pursue her "options." Her options were a life of drugs and alcohol.

She would promise the kids she would come to see them and take them with her for a visit. Many times they sat on the porch swing, suitcases in hand, expectantly waiting...with hope. Alas, after the third time she promised and didn't show up, Will took her to court so he could obtain custody.

The laws in the 70's were not for the father's rights. Finally, he did find a lawyer who could help him.

Sadly, now that they are grown and educated thanks to him, mom is their hero!

I think there should be an island of misfit parents...let's simply ship them there away from the children they harm.

71-Cee-
Sep 2, 2010, 7:58 am

>70 Whisper1: Linda, how sad. Please make sure that island of misfit parents is not in Maine.
>69 mckait: Kath, Reminds me of the time I was walking to high school (early morning) and saw a neighbor's child wandering our street in PJs in the cold. He was about 2 yrs old. I took him back to his house (everyone was asleep).
Why don't we teach more basic safety parenting in jr high and high school? I don't mean carrying an egg around all day. Egss don't wander, etc. What ever else kids will grow up to be, most will be parents. Scary.
So glad a/c is fixed for you... I know what you mean about the "I'm cold" whiners. So put on a sweater! duh. I should have been an arctic explorer. Maybe in my next life. :)

A/c for one day. The main breaker is toast. No a/c anywhere in the building.
NOT a good day.
Dan leaving for fishing trip, so.. he was going to clean up the house ( he did not)
and I came home to a totally trashed house, dishes in the sink. and just a mess everywhere.. including on the front porch.

See he was off today, and i figured he would be all done with his stuff.. since I found most of it for him..

and be ready to go and get pizza. No lucnh.. the staff lunchroom was well over 80 degrees.. 93+ outside

hungry, hot and really unhappy.
He just now left to take his stuff.. somewhere.. to be packed away. a truck I guess. He waited til I got home. (why???) so no pizza.

So I have been scrubbing the floors and running the sweeper. Did I mentionthat I took money out of my own saving to give him so he would have enough because he refused to either plan or tell me ahead of time how much he needed.
???

I could cry.

sorry

rant over.

As for bad parents.. and bad parenting.. I am so tired of hearing and seeing it I could cry again. you are so right Claudia.. parenting should be taught. Didn't used to be that way.. but nowadays ........

oh and linda.. any one of my kids will tell you their dad taught them how to drive. He took each of them out.. maybe one time. Kids just believe whet they need to.

>69 mckait: - That story gave me chills - in the bad way. I give my 2.5-year-old a fair amount of independence - but that means letting him play on another floor of our townhouse when he wants to.

I can't even fathom how you can lose your toddler for a couple hours. She fell asleep? Fine. But why didn't she go looking for her daughter instead of turning on the tv?

72 - Kids just believe whet they need to.

Sometimes parents do, too. My own father spent next to no time with us until we were in middle and high school, and the time he spent with us after that was full of criticism and aggression. Still, to this day he insists he's always been loving and supportive, and that his kids always felt like he was a friend.

and asked him what to do.. since comcast was giving me no satisfaction..
his phone and internet were out too, and in fact he had put out a ticket for himself this morning.

LOL ... love that little purple schmooey gif. But I'm sorry to hear that you're having phone/internet issues. I used to go through intermittent phone/internet as well when i was with Comcast and they always denied that there was anything wrong on their end, and that the squirrels must have chewed on my cables (again?) or if it was raining/snowing, that it was weather related. I switched to Verizon FIOS in the Spring this year and we haven't had those problems (knock on wood).

Are you the only person on LT who has that book? Where do you find this stuff?

I understand how it feels to be cut off. Not too long ago a series of events caused everything to be out on our island. Wow! That was weird. No electricity, no phone, no computers, no cell phone, no emergency comm for the fire dept even- no nuthin' ! The only feeling of connection was the bridge... still up. Only lasted a day. Okay... happy story.

I decided that since I needed to buy some kitty litter..
I would expand my shopping list to include limes, tonic and a bottle of gin.

{{{Side note:

A few years back I used to volunteer with an AIDs service group.. that sort of ell apart due to tax issues and 2 bad directors in a row. There were some nice people there.. a few in particular that I liked a whole lot, and think about often.
TWO David and Richard, a wonderful couple that I have missed.... I loved working with that group! We had monthly meetings upstiars of a small pub, and it seemed that it was always hot there! We drank gin and tonic all the time.. lots of ice! }}}

So.. having left the house with my reading glasses on instead of my "real" glasses.. my distance vision was a bit.. off...

I was walking up to the store and noticed two guys sitting at a table and they were both clearly staring at me. I promptly checked to make sure that I remembered to put on enough clothing to pass public muster.. and that I wasn't askew or inside out or anything ( its happened, sadly) .

I was dressed enough and not too askew.. and as I got closer, I realized that it was Richard doing the most staring and jumping up waving.. :D
This makes me so happy!!!!!!!!! I sort of feel like wanting to buy gin and tonic fixins helped to conjure them up.. lol

I was so happy to find them both well happy and together :)
yay!

Hopefully I will be able to join them in their new service venture.. and I could not be happier!!!!

In Philadelphia , on St Georges Road..off of McCallum St. you will find a marker.
The marker reads:

Artist famed for her murals in Pennsylvania's State Capitol, reflecting Penn's ideals of justice and peace. Also noted for her work in stained glass; book and magazine illustrations. One of three women artists who moved in 1906 to "Cogslea," she lived and worked here until 1961.

93. Mothers and Other Liars by Amy Bourret

Families are created in many ways... and some of them are unusual.
Even knowing this, Ruby has found a way to create her own that trumps most of them.

Nearly ten years after taking an abandoned baby into her care, pretending that
the child was her own, the media revisits what happened with that abandoned baby, now Ruby's daughter Lark.

An effort to do the right thing causes upheaval in many lives, proving once again that each person touches many others during their lifetime. Even if that life has been less than ten years so far.

Ruby's solution to the huge problems created when she attempted to right a wrong, rocked me to the core. I was flabbergasted and horrified by what she chose to do.

This is a story about friendship, true friendship, love, betrayal and loss.
Mostly it is a story about family and what it is that makes a family.

eta

I (surprisingly) gave this one 4 stars

Hi Kath!
Sounds like a good book...and you gave it a 4!
This is a problem. If there's about 10 LTers that read twice as fast as I do (20 books to my one), even if they only really like 1/2 the books they read, that's ten great recs for every one book I read. By the time I read one of those books, there's 10 more waiting. If I did the math right, this could lead on a straight path to the nut house! Maybe then, I can spend more time reading.
The agony...and the ecstasy...

So I took a reading break to find someting to eat.. and I also had a go at my keepr shelves.
I have a ( terribly small) set of bookshelves in my bedroom. They belonged to my aunt/ more like sister/ elaine. I miss her.

Anyway, they are purple. and funny shaped and they match nothing in my room and so of course I love them. I have a little goddess alter on top..
And the tiny weird shelves below hold my keeper books..
Which now include:

All of the Sara Waters books except The Little Stranger which I did not enjoy. ( also 2 videos )

ALL of the Three Pines books, hardback.. except for Still Life , which has not yet arrived.

Several of my favorite Charles de Lint books

The Hummingbird's Daughter ( with space saved for part II)

Several Armistead Maupin books ...

The Sparrow and Children of God

Dandelion Wine, We Have Always Lived in the Castle

And a few other special faves.
It makes me feel good to look at them.

WHY are there no touchstones for Charles deLint or Armistead Maupin?!?!?!?
WHY!!!!!?????????????????

Your small set of bookshelves sure manage to hold a decent number of books, Kath. ;-) I've been contemplating putting some bookshelves up on the wall in our bedroom above the bed, but Edd says all we need is a minor vibration or even a stiff win when the windows are wide open for the books to fall on our heads and kill us. So they remain piled up higgledy-piggledy on the nightstand

Winning the lottery means: A Big Big House. With several unused rooms that will, obviously, become liberries. Then, when the book census tops 5,000, it means a smaller house that will be dedicated to books, and which will be joined by other houses so dedicated as and when they are necessary.

My local bookery will have instructions, whenever a taveling book man comes by, to say "send us one each" for me. Someone will be by to fetch them before too long, and here's the book-buying credit card number.

Isn't fantasy lovely?

I just took my first trip to IKEA yesterday (called it a 'trip' because it's over an hour away, and it felt like a tourist attraction).
I came away with a lot of bookshelf fantasies...fortunately some of the bookshelves are affordable so I will one day have more shelves - I know it!

156cameling
Sep 7, 2010, 4:19 pm

The only thing I don't like about IKEA furniture is that they're not very durable in my experience. All the bookshelves I've bought from them ended up sagging like a swayback pony after some time. Of course my then boyfriend made the not-too-welcome observation that if I didn't put so many books on the shelves, they wouldn't sag .... needless to say the boyfriend went the way of the bookshelves ... out of my life and I bought more sturdy (but sadly more expensive) bookshelves that bore the weight of my books very nicely.... until I moved away and left them to my uncle and cousin.

I could not agree with you more, Kath. I bought two bookshelves from a national discound chain store and within a couple of weeks the shelves sagged and the sides started to collapse. Now they lean against each other and a wall to prevent a catastrophic episode from occuring.

I would like solid wood bookcases sometime in the future.

There is a simple but profound Lakota prayer: Mitakuye Oyasin.

Hey Kath! Love that prayer. I think I was an Indian in a past life. My mother told me (when she could still remember things) that I do have some Indian blood in me. Several generations back. But this is only oral tradition, no records that I have ever found.

Went out on a date night! We had pizza for the first time in months. MMMM. The rest of the date was grocery shopping - but, ya gotta start somewhere. :P
Cost way more than a movie! Never was a cheap date. lol

Your Lakota prayer reminded me of the little quasi-prayer we say at the end of a yoga session:

May all beings be free from suffering and the causes of suffering

May all beings never be parted from freedom's true joy

May all beings dwell in equanimity, free from attachment and aversion

May all beings have happiness and the causes of happiness

155/6 - We've had 20-feet of Billy bookcases for five years, and they're stuffed to capacity and holding up well (and they've even been moved 4 times or so). We also have an Expedit in our bedroom, and are likewise happy with it.

I love cheap Ikea bookcases.

185BookAngel_a
Sep 9, 2010, 3:25 pm

I'm thinking of getting an Ikea TV stand/entertainment center, and then putting two matching Billy bookcases on each side of it. (That will make it look like a big entertainment wall.) The TV stand is a bit better quality than the book cases, and the book cases will likely be filled with DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes, which don't weigh as much as books. I like that Ikea gives you the option of building your shelves all the way to the ceiling for maximum capacity.

I'm hoping they hold up. It's all the budget can afford right now, and even this is on hold until hubby finds a full time job.

Plus, finding a good spot for all my husband's DVDs might leave me more room for books in other areas (big grin).

Good morning, Kath! Just trying to catch up . . .

I liked the article about the church in Memphis putting up the welcome sign. I wish there was more of that sort of thing going around . . .

(shudders at thought of that stupid pastor in Florida)

If, in the long backlash of 9/11, the US abandons basic values like freedom of religion (and sometimes it looks like we're headed that way) we are sunk. The terrorists will have won a major victory in destroying what's special about America -- courtesy of a bunch of self-proclaimed American "patriots" who run roughshod over our own Bill of Rights.
