You may also wish to invest in a dictionary. I'd like to be Pokarekare Ana, all-round wily woman and one-time cowgirl. Yee ha!

Seriously (not to say the above aren't good advice), if you have written a book that is any good someone should be paying you for publication, not the other way round. If, on the other hand, you just want to see your name in print, why not publish the book yourself by way of a blog? It won't cost you anything and you'll feel 'published'. Any publishers who ask you to pay are in it to make money so they're not going to come cheap. And please don't just ignore the messages you have already had - if you want to be a carpenter, you're going to need a hammer; if you want to be a writer you have to learn grammar, spelling and punctuation. If you are serious about wanting to write, Stephen King's On Writing is a great place to start and a fun read at the same time.

Should? Yes, but not everything that is any good is also commercially viable. Self-publishing is not an absolute no-no.

Have a look at http://www.lulu.com/

Excellent point, my canine (or pinniped, or simian, or whatever else may emit a bark,) friend.

A Field Guide to Birds is an originally-rejected best-seller that immediately comes to mind.

I guess you could say the same for A Confederacy of Dunces. 'Not to go OT on this really important topic (self-publishing), but what are some others? Didn't even Harry Potter have a tough time originally getting published?

Aw, never mind, there are tons of examples available. Here are a few:

http://www.examiner.com/book-in-national/30-famous-authors-whose-works-were-reje...

Of course, there are many best-sellers that shouldn't have made it past ANY of the rejections. I'd elect Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Yes, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland started out as self-published as well.

Hmm: we've had a thread where we're asked to suggest titles, and now one where we should suggest publishers - are there other threads where you're asking people to write a chapter each or design the cover? :-)

If this is the same book, then it sounds as though it would be in the category of mainstream (or possibly young adult) romantic fiction - I suspect that's a field where you don't stand much chance of generating sales unless you have a big established publisher behind you. It's famously hard to get taken on by the people who publish romance - they know what sells and have very strict rules about structure, length, content, etc. If you submit something to them, make sure you've read all their submission guidelines.

Booksloth's suggestion of publishing your book free on the internet might work for you - if it's a success, you might get useful feedback from readers and build up a network of people who will be keen to read your next book.

You might want to try the Writer-Readers Group: http://www.librarything.com/groups/writerreaders
There are bound to be some folks there that have had experience with online and other non-traditional publishing methods.

Yes, then I could be Roger the Ship's Boy out of Swallows and Amazons! :-)

I was originally thinking of asking to be Thorold, Sheriff of Lincoln, but that would have meant Booksloth would have had to be my sister Godiva...

#16 Let's face it (and someone has to say this) you've obviously also never seen me naked on a horse.

#19 I really don't mind - go ahead and make up whatever you want.

21pokarekareana

BOADICEA! That's my suggestion re #19. Starts with a B and puts me in mind of feisty (and possibly naked) ladies, horses (and associated chariots), Stuff of Yore and, um, that blasted Queen song.

Don't stop me now... I'm having such a good time...

To get a book published cheap the best I have found is CreateSpace.com which is a subsidiary of Amazon.com

"Getting Back To The American Dream" was an idea for a book less than 2 months ago. Now, for less than $100 (and most of that was 2 express shipping charges) I just saw the book listed on Amazon for the first time about 2 minutes ago.

I got tired of waiting around for an editor or proofreader to become available. I read the book 4 times myself and changed about 15 minor mistakes on that 4th read. I "approved" the second Proof copy and two days later the book is available on Amazon. It was amazing! Feels good!

Good luck with the book, magnetsa! Do let us know how sales go - I'm sure it would be really interesting for all other aspiring authors.

ETA _ I just checked out your book on Amazon - looking good!
