Are other fans of this film aware of the website: www.mohicanpress.com? The site was created by people who just couldn't get enough of the film, including myself. It has info about the filming location, a narrative of (part of) the filming, actors' interviews, and background about everything and everyone. I have spent hours and hours immersed in reading all the material here--there are even brief key audio clips.
If you tried to read James Fenimore Cooper, you didnt get the same hustle and bustle as this audacious Michael Mann film accompanied by a rousing soundtrack. Coopers descriptions are pictorial, painstaking, long-winded and tedious. Cooper was considered "adventuresome" in the early 1800s, but he just doesn't hold well today. Now to the best filmic version. The plot is silly at times, though it pretends to be serious, with all the captures, recaptures, back-stabbings and melodramatic death sequences that seem to happen at random, but it does satisfy in its film format, although exaggerated and knowingly cheesy.
