Andorra

Really good play about a small fictional country presumably on the german border where tensions are growing as they expect an invasion. Mostly about racism but its more than that, it has a very Greek-tragedy feel to it, a conspiracy of circumstance and human failings. At times it also reminded me of Shirley Jacksons 'The Lottery' or 'Lord of the Flies'.
Only a couple of problems with it, one is a side event which happens to one of the female characters, its horrific and is really not addressed in any meaningful way. Its just sort of brushed aside, i found that a bit weak.

The other problem is probably a translation issue but i felt like some of the speeches were... a bit confusing, a little too esoteric or something. However i was show more really close to giving it five stars. show less

I love Frisch when he is writing about human relationships.
I subscribe to his views about many things.
That does not contradict the fact that they are commonplace, at least for me, and at least here.
This "implementation" and this play may be quite sensible and qualitative, but for some reason they make me loathe theatre.

The Jewish boy Andri was rescued from the Nazis and raised in a neighboring country. His foster parents, the priest and other people are helpful, but are they hypocrites - doing it for their own good? The book forces you to think. It addresses prejudices towards other people. Andorra is a city like any other. Andri experiences different problems which are structured in such a way that you experience a steady escalation leading to the climax.

Ein Buch, das einen zum Nachdenken zwingt. Es thematisiert Vorurteile, die wir anderen Menschen gegenüber haben, am Beispiel des Modells "Andorra und der Judenverfolgung".
Andorra ist eine Stadt wie jede andere auch, mit Menschen die Vorurteile mitbringen, welche man überall wiederfinden kann, sei es in seiner eigenen Stadt oder bei sich z.B. auf der Arbeit. Andri spielt hierbei die Hauptperson, die von Bild zu Bild, insgesamt 12, verschiedene Probleme durchlebt, welche so aufgebaut sind, dass man eine stetige Steigerung erlebt die zum Ende führt.

Andri, de hoofdpersoon van Andorra, is de pleegzoon van de leraar Can, die hem ooit uit het land van de Zwarten de grens over naar het land van de Witten heeft gesmokkeld om hem te behoeden voor vervolging omdat hij Jood zou zijn. Uiteindelijk blijkt Andri helemaal geen Jood, maar het kind dat de leraar heeft verwekt bij een ‘señora’ uit het land van de Zwarten. De onthulling van de waarheid komt evenwel te laat. In Andorra - de ogenschijnlijk vredige maatschappij van de Witten - worden Andri allerlei negatieve stereotype Joodse eigenschappen toegedicht. Andri maakt zich de hem opgedrongen identiteit eigen en blijft er aan vasthouden, zelfs als zijn ouders hem de waarheid vertellen. Als dan uiteindelijk de Zwarten het show more ‘onschuldige’ Andorra binnenvallen, wordt Andri als Jood geïdentificeerd en vermoord. De Andorranen wassen hun handen in onschuld omdat zij naar eigen zeggen deze afloop niet hadden kunnen voorzien.

Het stuk werd voor het eerst in 1961 in het Zwitserse Zürich gespeeld, daarna ging het op de symbolische datum 20 januari 1962 in Duitsland in drie grote steden tegelijk in première, precies twintig jaar na de beruchte nazibijeenkomst aan de Wannsee, waar tot de Endlosung werd besloten.

Frisch heeft met Andorra een parabelachtig stuk willen schrijven, waarin hij vooral het universele karakter van discriminatie wilde benadrukken en de maatschappelijke schuldvraag wilde stellen. Andorra blijkt in retrospectief een scharnierpunt in het oeuvre van Frisch, die zich in en buiten zijn werk als kritische, geëngageerde intellectueel liet gelden.

Dat Andorra op veel Duitse scholen nog steeds verplichte leesstof is, bewijst dat het stuk met recht als een moderne klassieker geldt waarvan de thematiek nog altijd actueel is. show less
