This one is set on a cruise on a river Nile. Quite an appealing one, because of the vivid characters and the dramatic love triangle at the center of the story. Almost everyone has something to hide, and the final solution caught me by surprise. As always, excellent plotting and misdirection by Dame Agatha. The only flaw for me is the unrealistic confession by the murderer once Poirot announces his solution, even though there was no definite proof and a stubborn denial would have been the best course of action for the murderer. ( ) A classic Christie, a newly married heiress is murdered on her honeymoon aboard the Nile steamer Karnak. Hercule Poirot is "en vacance" and well suited to investigate. Red herrings a plenty, more death and of course love before Poirot, assisted by Colonel Race, solves the puzzle. The use of a love triangle is a frequent motif for Christie and she reworks elements of this plot in a later book "Endless night" although the working of the story is very different. I followed up by watching the 1978 Ustinov adaptation (with it's all-star cast, slimmed down character list and increase in motives! A fun read. "If any misfortunes happen to my friends I drop them at once! It may seem heartless but it saves such trouble later!" And as "The Girl Who Has Everything ", "Beautiful Linnet, Tall golden Linnet has made a lot of enemies!!! This gem has stood the test of time. As long as you can accept that wherever M. Poirot goes, a murder will occur, you will enjoy the novel. My #1 suspect was actually the murderer. I just couldn't figure out how it was pulled off. There are a few unexpected plot twists, and a really surprising ending! No wonder that Christie remains the top selling novelist of all time. This was my fourth, and favorite so far, Agatha Christie novel since I decided to challenge myself to read all of her novels over the next few years. It was the third in the Hercule Poirot series. A page turner from the beginning, this whodunnit was full of surprising twists and turns right up until the end.
Beloved detective Hercule Poirot embarks on a journey to Egypt in one of Agatha Christie's most famous mysteries. The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: "I'd like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger." Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems. A sweeping mystery of love, jealousy, and betrayal, Death on the Nile is one of Christie's most legendary and timeless works. "Death on the Nile is perfect." ??The Guardian "One of her best. . . .
