Description

When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

A hermit found in extreme pain in a backwoods cabin leads Gunther to the leftovers of Chicago 8, a skeleton with a prosthetic knee, and a whole lot of trouble. Scenes of Chicago are vibrant
Complicated murder mystery, but not one that requires a lot of thinking on the reader's part. Involves some social issues of homeless people, suicide, drug trafficking, and alcoholism, but just as a side topic and not problems not really addressed. Set in Brattleboro, VT, so people familiar with the area may enjoy reading about some local features.
Good book when I just wanted to fill some time.

First words
A human hand stuck out of the fresh dirt like a pale succulent plant, except this plant was wearing a silver ring, which twinkled fiercely in the burning sun.
Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)I felt a drop trickle down my cheek and fall away soundlessly, but whether sweat or a tear I didn't know.
