Dog Food is proof-positive that a picture book doesn’t need to contain a story to be successful. Freymann and Elffers used fruits and vegetables to create brightly colored visual puns set against equally colorful backgrounds, and the result is completely charming. Examples include the “Doggy bag,” a red potato canine carrying a mushroom suitcase, and the elaborate scene titled “Working like a dog,” which features the eponymous animal seated at a mushroom computer desk, surrounded by tiny rhubarb books. Each pup’s face is unique and filled with character, thanks to the natural variations in the fruits and vegetables and the techniques of the artists. Children will delight not only in looking at the adorable images but also in show more figuring out the plays on words, making this an excellent book for reading together on a small scale. However, the details of the dogs might be lost if seen from a distance, so this might be one to pass on for large story hours. Recommended for ages 3+ show less
Dog food? Food dogs? Food for dogs -minus onions, grapes, and the like- shaped like dogs? What can you say about this book besides it's an inspiration to try making your own little fun edible dogs. My biggest complaint is no hot dog dogs or meat dogs. There was a lot of potential, perhaps sequels are needed.
This book is a surefire way to get your kids playing with their food without glaring at their plates.

While this book is sparse on text, it's illustrations are really interesting in a head-scratchingly odd sort of way. They were all constructed from food, and while that would seem like a novelty act, the expression that the illustrators generated is truly a sight to behold, if for no other reason than to understand how something so strange can turn out so well.
My little one cracks up at every page of this book. All the dogs are made of food...hard not to love the broccoli poodle!
Dogs made out of fruit and vegetables--what's not to love? Brings to mind my cabbage dog holiday ornament but not so kitchy:

It is, however full of silly puns. Delightful!
