A children's classic from France I'd never heard of, but it's a good one. Unlike some from that era (I'm looking at Barrie's Peter Pan) it has aged well; there's nothing objectionable here unless you avoid animal death. Remi is an orphan, raised by a good foster mother which adequately explains his good morals, unlike some orphan stories (I'm looking at Dickens' Oliver Twist). From there he begins a life on the road as part of an entertainment act. There's many highs and lows but it finds just the right balance, accurately conveying the hardships of life among the poor without making the story too stark. Coincidence becomes a little much for adult readers, but just shake your head and smile through it. Kids are still going to like this show more one, all these many years later. show less

Zou iemand dat kunnen show more bevestigen? show less
A book that made a huge impact on me. At firtst when it was read to me, later when I read it myself. Not once, not twice, but many times.
It made me ponder, how well off I was in this world, having two loving parents, a roof over my head and enough to eat every day. A good story to make one realize that it's not always like that.
perfect book to shift from fairy tales to more realistic stories for children xD. nice balance of actions and emotions, calmness and depth for a child. Every character, every animal, every scene is portrayed so beautifully that till now I can still recall them dearly and vividly. ahhh, can't recall how much tears I shed though =)
