I can't remember first reading this book, but I DO remember that for years after parts of the plotline stayed in my head like a half-remembered dream (SPOILER: the daughter of a wealthy merchant who has lost his fortune is sent to live with her aunt, meets a boy, there is a memory of a wedding and a ring that hurt her hand...)

After many times of googling the key words I could remember out of the plot I finally discovered the identity of the book that had for so long haunted me. It remains to me a very interesting historical novel for children and teens. I gave it five stars because the story had enough power and interest to me (at the age I first read it) to stay with me even after I'd forgotten the book itself.
