I re-read this after going back and reading the earlier Sharon McCone novels and having that character background really made all the difference to me. I found this to be an excellent mystery novel on my second reading of it. The McCone character really starts to evolve in this one and become more fully rounded. The introduction of the Hy Rapinsky character put it over the top for me. Oh, yeah, and it was a good story to boot.
Helping Anne-Marie with some environmental issues in N Eastern CA, McCone meets Ripinsky. Well, more of a collision than a meeting. Her mother declares herself liberated and Rae moves up. Her life changes not withstanding, she unearths some unexpected culprits. Always a good entertaining read in an interesting CA locale with historic overtones.
A good mystery, very evocative of an unusual landscape and the story where Sharon McCone meets Hy Ripinsky.
