The stories included in this collection represent Charles Dickens’ contributions to the Christmas issues of the magazines “Household Words” and “All the Year Round.” Stories for Christmas was originally published in 1871, the year after Dickens’ death. This handsome 2003 reprint includes five additional stories that appeared in Dickens’ Reprinted Pieces, first issued in 1866. The volume leads off with his most well known and beloved Christmas stories: A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, and The Cricket On The Hearth. The rest of the collection features lesser known tales, and some are not Christmas themed.
While not everything in this collection shows Dickens at his best, it does exhibit his skill in crafting interesting stories show more in different genres. These shorter works are proof of his prolificacy since most were crafted at the same time that he was working on his novels. For those put off by Dickens’ longer works, these shorter stories will provide a good introduction. The 2003 hardcover edition is cloth-bound and a beautiful addition to anyone’s bookcase. show less

Some of the stories in the book, though different in names and places, all carry the same plot. A spoiled Christmas is saved by the hero in a magnificent turn about. If you have read his "Christmas Carol," the rest will not be interesting. The book is worth having just for the lead story.
Great old classic stories that I like to re-read once a year.

Charles Dickens, perhaps the best British novelist of the Victorian era, was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England on February 7, 1812. His happy early childhood was interrupted when his father was sent to debtors' prison, and young Dickens had to go to work in a factory at age twelve. Later, he took jobs as an office boy and journalist before show more publishing essays and stories in the 1830s. His first novel, The Pickwick Papers, made him a famous and popular author at the age of twenty-five. Subsequent works were published serially in periodicals and cemented his reputation as a master of colorful characterization, and as a harsh critic of social evils and corrupt institutions. His many books include Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Great Expectations, Little Dorrit, A Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens married Catherine Hogarth in 1836, and the couple had nine children before separating in 1858 when he began a long affair with Ellen Ternan, a young actress. Despite the scandal, Dickens remained a public figure, appearing often to read his fiction. He died in 1870, leaving his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished.
