There seems some speculation as to the order in which it is best to read these "Revelation Space" books. Reynolds himsel says the Revelation Space - Redemtiopn Ark - Absolution Gap trilogy should be read first dhen Chasm City and The Prefect as asides. I think that Chasm City is a great prequel or introduction to the is Universe and does not harm the plot or future storylinesof the main Trilogy to be read first. In fact it is not until you read this that references to Calvin Sylveste, The Eighty and the Rust Belt/Glitter Bank/Melding Plague really make sense.
It is slower to get going then other Reynolds books (or perhaps I was more forgiving of the slower pace with the other novels, knowing there were part of a Trilogy)and can be difficult to follow initially with lots of flashback's and dream sequences. But the fabulous world building and typical high drama of a Reynolds novels are here in abundance with a well paced and executed finale.
Check it out before reading Revelation Space to see if you want to commit to a Trilogy of more of the same - but I strongly recommend that you do.

Another great read by Alastair Reynolds. Dreyfus and Jane Aumonier and Sparver - all great characters. But really Jane shined in this book and I just loved her tough, stoic grit. She had a much bigger role in this book than the first in the series which was great. I loved the mystery-vibe of the story set in space. Can't wait for the next book.

The first third or so of the novel felt like it was going nowhere. Boy was I wrong.
Great space opera, with all its feelings in the right place, an adult look at conflicts and a broad time-span. Worth trudging along the first few chapters.
It stayed with me in a weird way, I realise now that I am finally writing a review, after few months...

This is the recently released third novel in the Prefect Dreyfus Emergency trilogy, following The Prefect (re-released as Aurora Rising) and Elysium Fire. It has been over three years since I read Elysium Fire, and I fear it negatively impacted my enjoyment of this book.

I rated the first two installments of the trilogy quite highly; however, I had a hard time picking up where I left off three years ago. I think I would have enjoyed it more had I followed up Elysium Fire more quickly.

In any event, read the first two novels of the series. You cannot begin with this one and have any hope of enjoying it. If you’ve read the first two, you don’t need me to set the scene; the Glitter Band, Panoply, the Yellowstone System, Prefect Dreyfus and the AI protagonist Aurora.

I must say, I was not a fan of the conclusion. It seemed highly unlikely and unrealistic, but all in all, the trilogy is well worth the time.
