After the sudden death of their parents, the three Baudelaire children must depend on each other and their wits when it turns out that the distant relative who is appointed their guardian is determined to use any means necessary to get their fortune. Curious why this was so popular back when these were being published, I checked one out from my library. I wasn't to inspired to read it when the first page warned me that if I am attached to happy endings I should move along, but I was curious how it could be popular if it was unhappy and hoped the author was fibbing. The children are sent to live with a distant relative, Count Olaf, a money-hungry theater performer who connives to get his hands on the fortune.
