This classic should be in the African canon if it's not. It deals with almost all contemporary issues even though it was written in 1972 and set in the early 1900's. A prototypical 'Central African' novel with a broad story and less dialogue than one finds in the West. There are very clear moral messages and stunning drama and flourishes. It has a well documented notation section that unwinds the local bon mots and also the native words used. Fulfilling, taut, a real page turner at times, show more this is the life story of a purportedly factual person who lives out a sort of Machiavelli's The Prince in his quest and attainment of extreme wealth and rivalries with an assortment of African civil servants, spies, colonial administrators and others. The book elegantly includes the reality of animism, occult, and spiritual influences as well as the effect of white colonial rule with some harbingers of post-colonialism. show less
(sorry for the brevity and lack of deep insight here) "The Fortunes of Wangrin" purports to be a true story of a graft-greedy native interpreter in newly-colonized West Africa early in the 20th century. It's a highly readable account full of politics, culture-clash, greed, cynicism, intrigue, and native jostling for prestige.
