One of the smartest summaries of the time-period that can be found in the surplus of art history books out there.
For some reason, Yale University Press decided to publish Art, Design, and Architecture in Central Europe 1890-1920 by Elizabeth Clegg in 2006, which, like Art in France 1900-1940 by Christopher Green, largely overlaps with this book. One gets the idea that this book was considered not to be detailed enough, and so the above mentioned studies were published. This book was published for the first time in 1967, and, thanks to the five new editions which followed it, is still an up to date and show more well written overview of the probably most interesting period in European arthistory. show less
Written by the leading "scholars" and professional art historians, this work presents the state of knowledge in the major areas of the discipline of the history of art. "The work of the art historian thus becomes a synthesis illuminating every aspect of human experience." [Preface]
