Anton Chekhov (1860–1904)
Author of Ivanov / The Seagull / Uncle Vanya / Three Sisters / The Cherry Orchard
About the Author
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the provincial town of Taganrog, Ukraine, in 1860. In the mid-1880s, Chekhov became a physician, and shortly thereafter he began to write short stories. Chekhov started writing plays a few years later, mainly short comic sketches he called vaudvilles. The first show more collection of his humorous writings, Motley Stories, appeared in 1886, and his first play, Ivanov, was produced in Moscow the next year. In 1896, the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg performed his first full- length drama, The Seagull. Some of Chekhov's most successful plays include The Cherry Orchard, Uncle Vanya, and Three Sisters. Chekhov brought believable but complex personalizations to his characters, while exploring the conflict between the landed gentry and the oppressed peasant classes. Chekhov voiced a need for serious, even revolutionary, action, and the social stresses he described prefigured the Communist Revolution in Russia by twenty years. He is considered one of Russia's greatest playwrights. Chekhov contracted tuberculosis in 1884, and was certain he would die an early death. In 1901, he married Olga Knipper, an actress who had played leading roles in several of his plays. Chekhov died in 1904, spending his final years in Yalta. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

3 things plague the protagonist of A Nervous Breakdown.
The first is thinking too much- unlike most who simply ‘accept’ things- this is the kind of man (much like those ‘Reasonable’ types like Plato and Aristotle) who asks ‘why’ at everything. He praises god because He created the world and the alternative is damnation. However his ‘reason’ is cannibalistic- cognitive dissonances (a thing arguably needed to survive and certainly to thrive) is something this man lacks, so when show more confronted with the fact that his ‘powerlessness’ and lack of character will result in damnation of oh so many- he breaks down.
Second, he feels too much. As said before, cognitive dissonance is something required to live- if one tries to have empathy for every fool, every dead dog- then he is unable to live. Atleast that’s the case for most people, some choose to break and reject the world rather than accept it (Jesus, Buddha, Jainism, etc).
Third- a martyr complex. That’s all it is however- a ‘complex’, not action. He feels too much, and does too little- for that you need to turn off your rational brain and enforce your Will, which this poor sap shall not do.
I hate it. Not Chekhov’s writing cause it’s poignant as always, not the story or setting but what it makes me face. My own weakness- I had a lot in common with Vasilyev and I hate it- his weakness, his desire for numbness, how much he thinks, what a burden consciousness is on him and how weak he is to breakdown rather than stand up and mold the world. His weakness, his flaws, his actions call out the things I keep repressed that it disgusts me. show less

My ears were ringing after finishing this play, because it felt like everyone was yelling all the time. Ivanov, the title character, is a disillusioned, burned-out 35-year-old who no longer loves his wife but can’t actually tell her himself because that would be too easy. He has an affair with a younger woman and everyone thinks he’s after her for the money, so there’s a lot of shouting about that. The estate he lives on isn’t making much money and his loans are being called in, so show more there’s a lot of angsting about that. I’m around Ivanov’s age and can definitely relate to feeling like a failure after acquiring a lot of responsibilities that you can’t keep up with, but I couldn’t condone his keeping his wife in the dark, nor the fact that he and others hid from her that she was dying of tuberculosis. show less
The best part of this perfect collection was the note on the back cover stating that Chekhov's personal favorite of his own short stories was "The Student," which happens to be my favorite as well. It's only four pages long, but it so brilliantly presents the philosophy that runs throughout Chekhov's work that it made me reevaluate my view of everything I'd read up to that point.
When reading these 30 short stories, it's easy to fall into a deep, dark depression if you're not paying show more attention. A lot of bad things happen in just about every story, but not in a contrived, contrarian way like in a George RR Martin book, because every character feels real, every mistake feels real, and every consequence feels terribly, inescapably real.
But that's also the place from which each story's redemption comes, in almost the same manner. Every character feels real, every struggle against the machinations working against humanity feels real, and every hope against all reason that the future might be better feels real because all those things are real. Chekhov knew it all and felt it all and could convey it all in one percent of the space it took for the greatest writers in history to do the same.
And the best part about what Chekhov did? Throughout all the pain and joy, successes and failures, and laughter and tears of all these stories, not once did he pass judgment on anyone. Not a single character. There was never the slightest hint of favoritism, sympathy, condemnation, or any moralization whatsoever. He took what he wrote and who he wrote about and said, "Here's how it is, and that's that. Figure it out on your own." It takes a great deal of self-restraint and humility for a brilliant man and author to refrain from intentionally sprinkling a few of his own thoughts into his work, and it takes even more skill to keep from doing it accidentally. Tolstoy couldn't do it. Dostoevsky couldn't do it. But Chekhov did it over and over again. Lucky us.
Though all 30 stories in the collection are very good, I picked out some favorites in no particular order:
"The Death of a Clerk" (which should have been called "The Sneeze," but whatever)
"Gusev"
"A Boring Story," the longest story in the book and much better than the title would have you believe
"Peasant Women"
"The Black Monk"
"The House with the Mezzanine"
"The Student," which is my favorite
"Ward No. 6," "A Medical Case," and "On Official Business" are all great pieces that benefit from Chekhov's other career as a doctor
"The Fiancee" show less

How easy it is, Doctor, to be a philosopher on paper and, how difficult in real life.
The Seagull was a delightful exploration of binary contrasts, a meditation rocking the countryside as a mélange of folk gather by the shore of a lake for some Slavic R&R: adultery and suicide. I am only kidding. Echoing Hemingway, one would imagine all of Mother Rus hanging themselves judging by the pages of its marvelous literature. The contrast between urban and rural is explored as is the space between show more art and labor. Regret happens to ruminate and the servants receive a whole ruble to divide amongst themselves. There's a play-within-the-play which somehow struck me as did Bergman's Through A Glass Darkly and everyone appears to be quoting Hamlet. Substitute a sea gull for an albatross and pen a portrait of the artist (or author) as lecher and Bob's your uncle (but not Vanya). show less
