Questo libro è piuttosto strano per come mischia argomenti di solito ben separati. Io l'ho preso per la parte di teoria dell'informazione (vista in parte con un approccio bayesiano), ma si trovano temi come l'inferenza bayesiana per l'appunto, temi fisici come il modello di Ising, reti neurali... il tutto con una visione per l'appunto direi quasi olistica, il che permette di capire meglio come funzionano le cose (oltre che capire perché il mantra show more "bisogna che le parole in codice siano tutte massimamente separate tra loro" non è necessariamente la scelta migliore da fare: tanto i teoremi di Shannon su un canale rumoroso non possono per ipotesi assicurare il 100% di corretta decodifica, e allora tanto vale lasciare qualche possibile errore, se si può correggere meglio il resto.)

I learned a lot reading this book, but I didn't really enjoy it because I am NOT a science major. I did enjoy that the book is completely free, though. Overall, this is informative but I feel like there may be some heavy biases and inconsistencies coming from the British author. He goes on and on about how doing little things won't make a difference and then talks about unplugging "vampires" that suck energy while they are off (saving a few dollars a year). Really? Anyway, a decent read.

The author was a computer scientist who died in 2016 at a quite young age of stomach cancer. He seems to have been a typical example of the English left, insufferable and prone to be abusive in a more or less automatic way. The first chapter and many of the captions are needlessly irritating. I tried reading the first chapter via the endnotes only, but even those were bad. If you just dive in at the second chapter, you might find the book easier going.

This is the definitive book on what a sustainable energy framework would look like. The book is detailed, quantitative, clear, and self-contained.

His motivation is clearly to explain, not to exhort. He doesn't try to make it sound easier than it is, and he's clear about the advantages and disadvantages of each technology.

If you want to be able to think in an informed way about a sustainable energy system, you have to have this book
