This is a very good critical analysis of T.S. Eliot and his poetry. Raine is a great defender of Eliot. Although it has been years since I read much of Eliot's poetry, I found that Raine easily brought me into what Eliot was trying to explore in his various major poems. There is an appendix on Eliot's supposed anti-Semitism, which Raine disposes of carefully, but not totally convincing.
A selection of literary essays written since 1972, this book addresses in detail the work of Dickens, Donne, T.S. Eliot, Coleridge, Dr. Johnson, Betjeman, Elizabeth Bishop, Saul Bellow, James Joyce and many others.
