I bought this book at the Brooklyn Museum in November, 2009. It was from the exhibition of the same name. A fantastic exhibition of documentary photography from the history of rock and roll. From David Lee Roth to Patti Smith to Joy Division, the exhibition covered a wide range of bands and music.
The book includes almost every photograph from the exhibition with the same commentary on the photographs. I find two faults with the book. The first is unavoidable. Some of the photographs do not show more translate well to book form, i.e. a photograph of the Ramones in concert is split down the middle by the spine of the book. Not a big deal, but the fan, who in my opinion makes the photograph so intense, is obscured by the crease.
The second fault I find is that the book is organized by photographer whereas the exhibition was organized by theme (i.e. something like, Before They Were Big, The Fans, After They Made It, etc.) This made for a nice experience at the exhibition. A fine book from a fantastic exhibition show less
